In this video we'll attempt to repair my Canon Vixia HF M500 Camcorder broke, and see if we can fix it. Display panel dinge broke, the screen flops around freely and SD card reader is broken. Let's do a teardown and find out why it needs repair.

Some sleuths in the comments have figured out the component at 36:11 is an Alps Alpine micro-switch! Here's the mouser link: www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Alps-Alpine/SPVS310100?qs=YMSFtX0bdJAQP%252BPm9ouG8g%3D%3D So it appears the switch arm is either stuck (glued stuck like the other switches, would make sense), or it's broken off. You can see it poking out the side of the unit. Looks like I'll be doing a follow up video.

Don't know how old this video is, but at 31:02 the item in question on the SD reader board is a switch, you can just see the leading edge sticking out. You could just tape it in the pushed position to bypass it. But before doing that, check to see if it's stuck.

That component on the SD card board is a microswitch that looks to be stuck closed. I had that on a Canon T3i that I repaired recently. Identical part.

@@Fixologist1 Okay, so I dug into my spare parts tote and found the old board. The microswitch has a part number of 20120B and it's got a leg that sticks out and is pushed in by your door, I think. Your board had the same switch except no leg. It's possible the leg broke off? If you Google, "Canon T3I SD card board", the board that comes up will have that little rectangular metal piece and then there's the switch that sticks out at a 45 degree angle from that. Based on your video, it appears that this switch might be broken off.

@@Fixologist1 Here's the kicker for you. It is stuck 'out' right now because the tab is broken. That means the circuit is connected. If you remove this surface-mount microswitch, it'll break the circuit and your camcorder will always think the door is closed! I was thinking about shipping you my card so you could swap the components, but 10 seconds with a soldering iron or heat gun and you should be set! Of course, your microswitch might be a different model now that I look at it at 36:12 . If it works the same way, you're set, otherwise you might need to put a wire to bridge the two sides.

I know the video has just started for me and you've made this whole video already, but my first thought was once you started noticing that it seemed glued, is to soak that whole panel in 99% IPA. Might have helped open things up.

It looks like it was exposed to fumes from paint thinner or nail polish remover. Acetone melts plastic together like that.

that does look like a micro switch around 36 minutes, It could possibly be the problem. Ive seen micro switchs go bad on textile machines I used to work on, although they were bigger swihches. It may be something totally different too. Anyway you gave it a good try, And I learned a little also. Thanks

If there's a voltage difference across that little component; re the mem-card closure, just short it out with a bit of wire, i reckon that'll satisfy the requirement. and i agree that stuff these days is meant to break ($$$).

So the reason for the microswitch(which looks messed up) is to cut voltage to the sd card when the door is open. This allows you to remove the sd card without causing any issues. Otherwise you would have to turn the camcorder off each time you swapped the sd card. I think one of the plastic nubs that moved up and down with the door is used to activate the microswitch. I don't have any experience with Canon cameras but they use a similar design in some of their copiers.

Yes, I believe you are correct. This is the only camera I have with that feature. The other ones expect you to know not to pull the SD card while being acessed.

It's the CHEM TRAILS, man! Stay safe. I don't waste my time on anything using surface mount parts. I only do thru-hole or point to point technology. Everything else goes on the curb for "Mr. Haney" to deal with. I neither the budget nor the patience to master the new tools and techniques.

Hi Brad , maybe the screws need to be in to ground to the chassis? and i think the staining is maybe oils or residue seeping from the plastic....Cheers mate

Looks like salt from the air. Do you live near the sea I wonder? Canon have done this battery door trick on their DSLRs as well. My 7D turns off if I open it. Also I would try re-seating all the multi-flat connectors. That worked for my Panasonic after it had been dropped. I whole heartedly agree on the your 'save from e-waste' opinion. Taken so many camcorders apart that went faulty, never managed to fix 1, even when i had 2 identical camcorders with different faults! I am the same. i bring back stuff to the gaff to fix all the time, a 4 terrabyte hard disk out of a skip is my best pick lately! My best mate was going to throw his faulty tumble dryer away, after checking most things inside the machine, turns out there was a short circuit in the moulded plug! Very rare indeed! And just took apart both mine and my fiance's usb banks as they got drenched!, ten minutes with a high pressure air hose, perfect!

The part u are showing is a micro switch at the end of the switch is a tab sticking out should push in to complete the circuit when the door is shut push the switch with a screw driver I’m certain that’s a micro switch

A couple of minutes in and it looks like someone spilled something on it. Could it be a bad optical sensor for the door? Grab a dead camera off of eBay and try changing the board for the card reader. As for long vids with few edits go, I just speed up the video. I watch 'em all, long or short.

I would be checking the ribbon cables and the connectors on that board . Clean the end of the the cable with I.P.A. It kind of looks like the big one might open to seat the cable more complete. love the vids later

Hey there man that little part you thought was a contact I think your correct but also incorrect look at that tiny fucker again I think its a micro switch with a little nub on it that that spring on the door activates. Could not tell for sure from the video but I pretty sure i saw a nub or little black actuator thingy yes that is the technical term ha ha good luck just wanna do what i can to make sure you continue being you dude. I sure could use another shitpost sometime soon. some are saying you can short it and fool it always being closed but to remove battery before installing removing SD card.. another said try pushing on it with a probe or toothpick see if it works that way? can you leave that panel off but connected where you can get to that button with a toothpick, then hit it or push on it while powering up? see if the switch is kaput or if its just not being activated by lever contraption? $79 same model working on the bay , LCD just doesn't close all the way, barter with this guy, $40 shipped whatever ..

I'm starting to wonder whether this camera was a display unit. Using glue to fix it in place as a camera that had been written off is the only way that the 'glue' could make any sense to me. Having said that, I used to work in a shop that sold video cameras and we secured them through cables that attached between the cameras and the tables rather than any dodgy gluing job.

I bought a Sony camera that dies video also in 2015 but haven't used it in 5 years,now the battery won't take a charge and Sony wants $125 for a new battery and has to be sent to them.$125 WAS WHAT I PAID FOR CAMERA !!!@@
