Why Dallas Green didn't think anyone would like

Dallas Green from ‪@cityandcolour‬ didn't think anyone would like his 6 and a half minute slow and sad acoustic songs... but boy was he wrong!! He's now spent 20+ years using his "slow and sad songs" to help him process his head and heart while also making art that connects with fans all over the world.

Dallas also made a comment years ago before his solo stuff took off that he hated his voice when he would hear it played back, and figured if he hated his voice, why would other people like it? This comment inspired me as a singer because I too hate my voice, but I've always enjoyed singing. It's one of those things that if you enjoy doing it and other people like it, who cares what you think? You'll always be your own worst critic. Sully Erna from Godsmack made a different comment years ago, "As long as you can hit the notes and sing in tune or key, then you can sing. It doesn't matter what your voice sounds like, how low or high, etc, so long as you can remain in key, you're a singer." Between both of those comments from incredible musicians has helped motivate me and many others to continue doing what we love.

I came back from my first tour in Iraq, and it was a grueling, cruel, beautiful tour with the US Army Infantry, early war (2004), and found City and Colour as a fan of Alexisonfire. Over the years, Dallas has spoken to me through songs like "Sorrowing Man" and "Grand Optimist" that play on repeat almost daily. I've been out of the Army 11 years, my daughters are in high school now, and my wife and I have been married 20 years. We struggle. My mind and heart and soul fuckin' struggle. The City and Colour project has been there with me. Dare I say Dallas has helped me heal? Dare I say he has helped me become better? I have no problem with these claims. So, man am I glad he took this chance. IHS.

He used to play at my high school. I used to hate his music, but after you experience tragedy in your life music speaks to you. When I heard Meant to Be that was it for me. I was angry that he was bringing those emotions out of me, but I am glad he decided to do what he does.

It is the very reason he thought would not work, is why I fell in love with the music. It felt like an open book and we were reading every page. I am by no means a “from the beginning” fan, but I feel just as connected. If I Should Go Before You came out on the day I felt at my lowest and it happened to be on my discover weekly on Spotify. The way it moved me was inexplainable and I cherish that record til this day.

I can’t imagine the pressure he must feel from how deeply he connects to his audience. My grandmother and I used to bond over his music before she died, and I showed it to her and she would listen to it to help deal with her son’s suicide. I have needed his music in every step of my healing journey, he draws the words out of my heart that I’m not brave enough to speak. I am really thankful for this man and his decision to follow his passion. Saw him live twice and I just belted the words and cried the entire time.
