Frank Grillo (Purge, The Grey) joins us this week to share how behind the tattoos, muscles, and grit he has transformed his life to be in service to those who are at their lowest point. Frank shares how his bond for Liam Neeson came full circle after working with him in The Grey, and also how working with Nick Nolte in Warrior changed his career. We also talk about his background as a fighter, his switch to DC from Marvel, and his experience working with friends of the show Scott Caan and JK Simmons on One Day As a Lion.

Warrior was absolutely magnificent. Truly emotional. I'm assuming Dana hates the movie cause it shows a lot of the trauma and pain that a lot of these guys have in their background. That's not something you want front and center if it's your business to market. It's not really a movie that sells MMA. It's about the relationships and pain and forgiveness around it.

Ofc Dana doesn't like it cause he can't continue to exploit them the way he does and people would be behind fighter pay and health more 😂😂

Warrior is a awesome movie, Dana white hates it because the fighters actually got paid and it showed the backstory, the pain, the trauma, and the sacrifices fighters often make, not exactly good when you want to draw in a audience that wants only a show and knockout

also, he hates anything that diminishes his UFC product. Pride FC put on grand prix style tournaments to determine best in the weight class. people love and miss that tourny style, which goes against everything Dana and UFC currently represent. big prize fights without paying anyone but the top guys. it also showed the trauma and addiction many of these fighters lived and he wants it to be seen as a clean cut Olympic type sport instead of what actually happens

Went to see this with my mum as she is a big Tom Hardy fan, cinema packed with fight fans and macho dudes. During the last fight i scanned around the room and I've never seen so many guys fighting back the tears, it was so emotional, when the film ended the place cleared out like there was a fire, hoodies on faces hidden. I don't think even half the audience was prepared for just how drawn into the characters lives the film would take them. Warrior is an amazing movie.

This comments section is so wholesome. I was an amateur MMA fighter when this came out, and I had a buddy of mine who served in the Marine Corps call me up and say, "Bro, you have GOT to see this movie. I will go back to the theaters and watch it with you, TODAY." I was so blindsided by how it impacted me on an emotional level. I said the same thing to my oldest brother(who was living on the other side of the country), that we HAD to watch this with one another. In that last scene, our faces, as two fully grown martial artists, were a mask of tears. After the screen was dark, we literally got up, hugged, and just held each other bawling. My brother and I have been best friends for over a decade at this point, and this is still one of my fondest memories of the two of us. Two grown, strong men, brothers, in full masculine vulnerability. I love you, Lucas.

I agree. Franks career reminds me of COLLIN FARRELL's career start. Farrell would take all these roles and lead roles anywhere for 10k just to get his name out there which had the industry at the time talking about his crazy acceptance in lead roles for pay. I think Collin finally got his pay break after starring with Tom Cruise in Minority Report where he finally earned 6 figures. Grillo was just making a few small roles at the time of warriors but now you see him in everything and anything, mostly in leads of b-budget and foreign films. But now he's getting more attention in supporting roles in Hollywood's big-budget films. He is underrated, but also typed cast like most action stars.

Warrior was mis-marketed as an MMA / fight film. It's fantastic, nowhere near enough people saw it on a big screen at release but it was a film about living with trauma and how that translated for those characters onto a an octagon canvas, it wasn't a fight film or a glorifying the sport - there was no effort to highlight sportsmanship or pre-fight stuff.

The acting was fine, but the writing was a complete mess that rips off far too many elements from other fight films like "Rocky" and "Bloodsport" while also creating some rather confusing characters that the writers can't seem to decide what to say about. I'd rank it as a mid-tier fight film-- above garbage like "Mortal Kombat" and the "Street Fighter" live-action movie, but below actual classics in the genre like "Rocky", "The Karate Kid", and even lesser-known films like "Vision Quest" and "Best of the Best".

As someone who trains MMA I see where Dana is coming from. An MMA gym is NOTHING like what they show in the movies. The personalities are NOTHING like they show in the movies. In order to get to a high level of MMA you need to train consistently since you were a child or teenager. There are levels to this. This guy doesn't train and in a few weeks he's at the top. They portray it as more barbaric instead of a respected sport. It will definitely deter people from joining the sport because they see it as a run down, less professional, douchery thing to do. However, I liked it. I watched it a few times. Very good movie. If the movie portrayed mma accurately it wouldn't be entertaining. If the fight scenes were accurate, they would be boring. People want to see batman style of fighting. Not actual fighters circling around all fight and guard passing. Those are a small percentage of people they're trying to appeal to a larger demographic. I watched it when it first came to DVD in 2012 and a few times in between including a few months back. The last time I watched it i watched it with people. It's just a movie but i did feel the need to disclose that's nothing like the mma community. That's nothing like an mma gym.

And what would be a good representation of the ufc? people train hard for many years and fight in unknown contests for small pay with a massive risk of injury that can have you out of work for most of the year with no pay and the same applies to the ufc but with a 50k win purse vs a 10k loss purse if your on the main card but again, if you get injured, you dont get paid?? Then you have to pay your fight camp out of your own purse, so the trainer and support staff, corner men, sparring partners etc. fu*k that, sling coke on the corner and start rapping, it probably pays the bills with less risk.

Warrior is an amazing movie. But to people in the fight business it's cringy. It's like boxers watching Rocky or lawyers watching Law and order.

I was lucky enough to catch a test screening of it in Vegas with a bunch of local MMA fighters that the PR/marketing team invited. Awesome reaction to it overall, especially for the early beatdown in the gym.

I can understand why Dana doesn't like Warrior and loves Kingdom. Warrior was "movie mma," and compared to Kingdom, Warrior doesn't realistically portray mma fighters and their lifestyles and how things work in the mma business. I enjoy Warrior very much for the story and acting, but after being friends with some mma fighters for years now and seeing that world in real life, I've never seen an mma movie or show that comes close to an honest depiction of mma besides Kingdom. It's a fantastic show with incredible performances, writing, and fighting choreography. It is the closest thing to a true to life mma world. Watch it if you've never seen it!

can't believe so much crap in so little time coming out of Frank's mouth. neither Joel nor Tom were "unknown", yeah they were about to get more popular but both had already been featured in prominent movies, and MMA _was_ already mainstream. it's like he's forgetting this movie came out 2011 instead of 2001.

The main criticism is that it's not realistic to fight 3-4 times against top level contenders in the span of a week. For example, Bellator holds Grandprix style tournaments, with eight fighters, and it takes the better part of a year until the last fight happens, because pro fighters average three fights per year, 4-5 if they're really busy. There are logistical considerations like fight camps and downtime to heal from injuries. Obviously, you can't squeeze all that into a two hour movie without turning the entire thing into an epic montage from beginning to end, so they left it out. I like it regardless.

I heard people shitting on this movie and went back and rewatched it to see if maybe I just had one slipped past me. Nope. Warriors of fucking good movie. I think Tom Hardy's the most underrated actor in Hollywood too. Better than Leo in the revenant. Unrecognizable and unbelievable. He should have gotten that Oscar

I think the main complaint would be that the way the tournament is structured is completely unfair…. Fighting multiple fights back to back. And over the course of a weekend is crazy. It completely avoids how many fighters would be too injured to fight so soon after just 1 fight!!! And they’re all the same weight class??? No large scale MMA tournament would be like that in real life. For good reason.

Dana has a point. Most pro fighters I’ve met aren’t at all like they are in Warrior. But then again it’s a movie. Depicting the fighters as non dramatic regular pro athletes would make a pretty boring movie.

"Warrior" is trash, and MMA was popular in 2011. That movie looked like something made by someone who saw one UFC event and didn't know how to write an interesting story. The fight scene in "They Live" was better.
