I don't think he was because Maul himself admits at one point Sidious never taught him the deeper intricacies of being a Sith and worried what would happen to the Sith if Sidious died before teaching him, I think he was meant to be a weapon and that is it.

While I have no doubt that Sidious would kill Maul instantly if it was necessary and not think twice about it. Every now and then, he'll say something that makes me think he was really proud of Maul. Since he was responsible for his upbringing and training. They might have slipped a little too close into that surrogate, father and son relationship.

All in all, Sidious was a very bad teacher and master. He was an excellent manipulator and he was able to mold Force users for a specific purpose - Maul as a brutal assassin, Dooku as a politician, Vader as a right-hand man - but he was never able to train a successor.

Maul is a legit Sith imo, not only did he take down one of the wisest Jedi (Qui Gon), but he also managed to create a massive crime syndicate. It would've been so amazing to see George's sequels with Maul as it would've had a beautiful movie poster, the same as TPM.

Legends EU had Maul not lost he would be in the position of Asajj Ventress And General Grievous with Dooku being second in command to Sidious Maul had a potential in the force for a top tier weapon even superior to Ventress but Dooku had one high enough to be a true accomplice but either way Anakin would still probably replace Dookus second in command commission at some point if not Anakin then Galen Merek would of yeah.

I feel like sidious's big mistake was getting rid of plaguis before it was truly time. I get Sith want to do their own thing, but having plaguis, Sidious, Maul, and Tyrannus would've been a dream team of: Wisdom/knowledge, shiftiness and deceit, combat as an extreme, and tyrannus's lightsaber/general skills and knowledge of the jedi he grew up with. If he waited a couple years down then the jedi could've taken Maul and Plaguis, then tyrannus could've been turned on and Sidious wouldn't have had to play games the entire war or worry about Maul interfering, or tyrannus getting older and weaker. Could just convince Anakin of the jedi's bullshit, and work him over through Padme and He wouldn't necessarily have been burned

From my point of view, Maul definitely started improving his Dun Möch skills after the Night Sisters healed him. The man was getting into everyone's heads.

If I’m not mistaken i think there was a point where Maul said he knew Sidious didn’t teach him further into the force. So i think he knew he had a limited role/shelf life. But to the common person he could say he was Sith Lord and they would be none the wiser. So i guess Plagueis was right ultimately

Maul was nothing more than muscle for Sidious. He lacked the ability to plan decades in advance and take into account all the variables that could arise. He was stuck only being smart enough to understand Sidious’ plans right before they came to fruition and see the greatness of them. I love Maul as a character but he was always just a sith assassin.

The question at the end poses an interesting debate; Combat-wise, Maul was a true Banite Sith, as he would completely and utterly mog 99% of the Brotherhood of Darkness and even stand among or even above the average Sith of ancient history. However, the Rule of Two Sith demanded much more than combat prowess, and Maul was barely, if at all, trained on the art of leadership, manipulation, finances, etc. Yet, in spite of that, he did manage to build a considerable pocket empire with Crimson Dawn and its predecessor.; not much for most of the Sith throught history, but surprisingly enough to someone on his conditions. I do belive, thus, that Maul could be considered a Banite Sith: I do belive fully that if the whole Naboo crisis had gone differently, and Maul had the chance to be Sidious' true apprentice, he would've certainly be able to challenge Palpatine in a way Tyranus and Vader never had the courage to do. If this "Full pontential Maul", one that was properly trained and not cut in half, would've in fact won against The Emperor is a different discussion, tho.

It’s difficult to just “become” a sith when the sith were a species, a race. Adopting their teachings is one thing but just assuming a darkside wielder is a sith is a mistake, hence why “the sith have been extinct for a millennia” is such a profound statement made by the council in the phantom menace.

I agree Maul wasn't true Sith. When you look Palpatine didn't train or taught Maul deeper myseries of the Force. It's great how Palpatine manipulated Plagueis and everything while preparing to take his place. May the Force be with you too😊

In answer to your question about Maul’s legitimacy, I have a couple data points to add, but it is still not enough to draw a conclusion. 1) In the Clone Wars episode where Siddious goes to Mandalorian, kill’s Maul’s brother, and humble’s Maul… he starts by saying to Maul, “You have become a rival.” Obviously, Maul is not powerful enough to seriously be a threat. But he was at least powerful enough that comparing the two was relevant. Anakin vs. Obi-Wan => close enough to matter. Anakin vs. random force sensitive younglings => so unbalanced it’s not even good comedy. Maul was powerful enough to need humbling, but not powerful enough to need killing. 2) I believe (but might need fact checking) that Dooku was already in Siddious’ orbit, and already taking steps to start building the clone army when he heard about Qui-Gon’s death. And when Siddious dueled Yoda, he taunted Yoda that Vader would be stronger than either of them. I infer that until then, he still intended to train up a fully human Vader, and eventually die at Vader’s hand. Thus continuing the Rule of Two. Not only were Maul and Dooku disposable, the plan required their disposal. Plagueous came up with the idea of the Clone Wars. He paid for the clones AND the droids. He knew that Dooku was being used for some of that. But I think only young boy Anakin was actually expected to last long enough to kill him. Anybody else (like the inquisitors) was never an apprentice, regardless of what he taught them.

Since maul was first mentioned to Plagueis by Sidious, they agreed maul would be trained strictly as an assassin and not a true sith lord. As far as Plagueis was concerned, maul was always intended to be JUST AN ASSASSIN. THATS WHY Plagueis didn't consider maul a true sith. Why does this guy make things up ? Why does someone like star wars theory even talk to this guy ?

I would argue that Maul was apart of the rule of 2 because he got the title “Darth”. If he was just made out to be an assassin he would not have gotten that title plus there would be many other lightsaber users who would have gotten the “Darth” title like Ventress for being an assassin

Maul was never a Sith Lord. An Acolyte and Assassin? Yes. But never a Sith Lord. He came close in Mandalore. But that’s the closest he ever got.

I don't have the knowledge to name mauls specific role but I would say he would be considered a dark jedi if he been a jedi. Very powerful in the force and combat abilities but incomplete in his training. He would forge his own path unknowingly and always deviate from ever really becoming a sith.

Legends Maul is nothing but an attack dog of the Sidious and Plagueis by contrast in Cannon Maul was made out to be a proper Sith Lord. in the 2015 Darth Vader comic, Sidious would remark to Vader that losing Maul was a major setback.
