Why Deku FAILS as a Protagonist (and Gohan Is Underrated)

Deku kinda sucks. For me he fails as a protagonist. Fundamentally, he brings down the potential of My Hero Academia. His flawed characterization paints him not as a sympathetic hero, but as an annoying gary stu. On the other side of the coin, Gohan from Dragon Ball Z, specifically Teen Gohan, is unbelievably slept on. Teen Gohan perfected the "Nice Guy" protagonist trope, before it was even really a thing.
Hope u guys enjoy!

SOKKA, not Deku, is how you write the one character without superpowers. Sokka isn't a bender. But damn, the guy is a boss. He's self-confident, develops to become a great leader, can actually fight using various weapons e.g. his trusty boomerang, learns the art of the sword, and dated the fucking moon! Mostly, Sokka has a far better "boy-to-man" arc than Deku.

I kind of see your point, but a lot of the things you said seemed to have come the first 2 or 3 seasons of the shows rather than further down the line when he develops past that. Your main argument seems to be that deku is reckless(since you say reckless like 50 times) and does not have consquesences for his actions. The reckless thing makes zero sense to me, for your first example you mention how he was being reckless saving Bakugo from the sludge villain but in the show you see how the heroes were not trying to do anything to save bakugo and were just standing there, also if he didn't do anything all might would have never seen him and come help him and bakugo. i do agree that him being an underdog makes no sense since he was given the strongest power, but the reason he is praised is not for his power, it is for his heart and strategy. him being quirkless is also very important down the line in the plot of my hero. My hero said multiple times that being reckless and charging head first into danger is the key to being a hero. i can understand you wanted to make a gohan video and wanted something to compare it too but it wasn't it chief

Mofo be defending the most badly written character of the decade dawg. Think about all the things you could've done instead of writing this longass paragraph. And also why did the show make it seem that the pro heroes weren't doing anything? The show did that just to set up deku as the reckless altruistic messiah hero, that's just bad writing bruv. They could've showed deku being heroic in other ways but they had to just pull the good ol "the pros don't do anything" cliche. Also literally everyone in the show has a heart bruh so why isn't everyone liked and idolized and loved like deku is? And no, him being quirkless was not important at all in fact now he has way too many quirks and is now the OP chosen on protagonist. And even if MHA said that being reckless and charging ahead is the key to being a hero doesn't mean MHA is right you goofy NPC. That's just the writer trying to gaslight you into thinking the character is so good and altruistic whereas he is actually just a useless dumbass. This video was too right, y'all 9 year old mofos just don't want to admit it.

My problem with Deku is that he doesn’t seem to realize how fucked the world he lives in is. I mean, it’s a world where corporations have capitalized and branded heroism. Where the only reason why a hero does good is for a paycheck. It’s a world with an official and national ranking system for superheroes, which has been shown to cause problems. It never occurs to him that he attends a school where he attends classes on making a superhero costume and name for your brand. Maybe he should be learning about what causes crime and how to prevent it? Unlike characters such as Edward Elric, he’s never forced to compromise or reconsider a belief he holds about the world around him. Whenever he is challenged by a character like Stain, he stays with the institution that Stain revealed as flawed and corrupt and more or less holds the same belief that “what I’m apart of is good.”

@nicholasleclerc1583
@nicholasleclerc1583 2 года назад
Dude, he literally equals him in all things (themes, meaning AND presentation) with his fight against Muscular alone; the only difference is that you couldn't insult him with your pity because he didn't pathetically lose and ridicule himself and his unsupported Martyr Complex ideology against Big Sea King; he is JUST as determined to save EVERYONE and even has the EXACT SAME impulse to charge in and fight the villain; yet he wins more often and is smarter and more efficient and has done more rational and logical things so it's an instant disadvantage; also, being given some real power in order to be a hero anything else but name, in order to actually save abuse victims from violent psychopaths instead of just encouraging her from afar with a stupid bike helmet on; pff, okay, dude And then, he saved YET ANOTHER abuse victim (Shouto) : the point of that fight was that, with what was needed to change him, Deku was the only one to get him to change; which was pretty cool And with what he's caused to Bakugou passively and accidentally is pretty impressive and speaks volumes of the impact of his REAL, ACTUAL power & growth that Rider never has; nobody really remembers the latter, neither in the story nor in the fanbase; Deku, on the other hand, in the context of Bakugo
@firstlegend5105
@firstlegend5105 2 года назад
@@nicholasleclerc1583 Nope, Mumen Rider and Deku are completely different in terms of meaning, in terms of their perspective of what it means to be a hero and their judgements. Mumen rider is simply and embodiment of what it means to be a hero, he is the symbol of JUSTICE, extremely brave, loyal and honorable hero who refuses to overlook any crime, no matter how minor or insignificant it may be, or back down from any fight, no matter the opponent. He is incredibly determined and never backs down, even at the cost of his own life. He is perfectly willing to give his own life if it means protecting innocent people from evil, even when it is clear he has absolutely no chance of success. He seems aware that he is weak compared to other heroes, and doesn't feel that he is worthy to move up in class because of it, but he is still more than willing to take on opponents that the Hero Association sends out for A-Class heroes or above, if only to buy the stronger heroes time to arrive. This shows his selfless concept of self-sacrifice, and how he is willing to go the extra mile, as seen when other C-Class heroes were seen running away from the Deep Sea King. He is very passionate about justice. He is shown to greatly respect people who save him, as seen when he mails Saitama a letter that he initially tries to compose, but quickly crosses out and finishes with a quick "Thank you!!", afterwards asking the owner at the oden bar he was eating at to give Saitama his best serving. Similarly to Saitama, Mumen's heroic deeds are very pure, especially having some sympathy towards villains who seem to have a human heart left in them and appear to be misguided towards a wrong path, such as Bang's former disciple, Garou. Even though he has been insulted by the Tank Topper Army and several other higher ranking heroes, Mumen doesn't mind. He is also perceptive enough to see what Saitama's true abilities actually are during their first encounter. He has high expectations of heroes and does not believe they should commit dishonorable deeds. An example of this belief is when he's talking to Charanko in the hospital; when telling Charanko about Saitama and learning of Saitama going to the Super Fight Tournament, he assures Charanko that Saitama would never break the rules to enter in Charanko's place since he is a hero. This could be interpreted as naivety for believing that no heroes can commit selfish deeds. In many ways, Mumen Rider is a foil to Saitama, Mumen Rider has none of the perceived strength required to be a superhero, and yet he has the immense drive and willpower to be one, while Saitama has all the strength he could need to be a hero, but none of the enthusiasm that the Mumen Rider has. Remember Deku is GROWN to be the next All-Might. *Deku is the next symbol of PEACE.* Izuku is a very timid, reserved, and polite boy, frequently overreacting to abnormal situations with exaggerated expressions. Due to yeаrs of being looked down on by Katsuki for lacking a Quirk, he is initially portrayed as insecure, tearful, vulnerable, and non-expressive. These traits are especially present around Katsuki, who also constantly harangued him for his aspirations to become a hero. However, after being accepted into U.A., making new friends, and facing Katsuki during the Battle Trial Arc, Izuku gradually matures into a more confident and brave person who's always eager to prove his worth as a hero, eventually developing strong leadership skills, which combined with his passion and strategic abilities, have turned him into a central figure within Class 1-A alongside Katsuki. Deku is Izuku appears to have a more brash and abrasive side to him, which typically shows up when he finds himself in combat. This side of him makes him act more like Katsuki, being rather loud and unwavering, and also with a strong drive towards victory. He claims that this is because he sees Katsuki as the embodiment of what someone who strives for victory should be. He has also admitted that he doesn't like this side of him very much and tends to keep it in check. He does, however, find himself giving in to this almost feral rage when in dire situations and faced against opponents who had brutally hurt people he cares for, like in his battles against Overhaul and Tomura. Yes, there are some similarities between their sense of justice, their Persona, their actions, their behavior but they are not the same. They fight and protect for the world that lies ahead for them in the future

@@proffjosue1970 Lesson 1) Nothing is ever black and white. There will always be a mix of intentions in every decision someone makes. I won't deny there is definitely that part of Deku that wants the power and the game as a hero. But reducing it to only that is incorrect Deku shows time and time again a willingness to out his life at the line for someone else. It has been stated in the show that he shows way more heart for preserving life than (as opposed to Bakugo) making sure he is able to come out on top. So already your argument against him has holes. Let's go to before he received the powers as well. He was working to gain entry to the best hero school WITHOUT a quirk. His thought process in this was never (until All Might came along) that he would gain a quirk or be given something so he would become superpowers like everyone else. He wanted to be trained to help protect people in the best school and to make due with what he had. You and so many others disregard all of this in order to appeal to a claim that Deku only cares about the game and power. But there is definitely much more to it than that

@@jadorianpaul120 like they don't train people in the police academy. Applying to UA was delusional. And in his first meeting with All Might, All Might ecohed my sentiment. Deku was being delusional. He refuses to accept the truth. He can't be a professional hero and he is in denial of that fact. If his desire really was to help people, if the root of his desire was really to help people he would have looked for other ways to be a hero. Compare this to something like sports you might want to be a professional athlete but if you don't have the talent you will never make it to the top of the game Look the failure of his mother and of society is making children feel like being a hero is the only thing that is worth doing in life. That if you are not a hero you are nobody. That if you don't have a quirk you are nobody

@@proffjosue1970 Ok I kind of see what you are saying and it is a fair point. However I am still a bit stuck on the idea that in order to truly want to help people, he has to have it in his head to follow any path, such as being an officer. To try to use an analogy like you have, I feel like that would be like saying someone who wants to fight to provide food to all of those starving in Africa should instead be willing to become a doctor and treat their illnesses or something, because that might be more realistic (maybe bad example but the meaning should be clear). Being an officer and being a hero...they help in different ways. And just because there is an alternative way to help someone doesn't mean that person can't still want to help those people in a specific way. That is the problem I see. I don't think it makes sense saying he doesn't care about helping people just because he doesn't want to do it in the way you said. It disregards every action we have seen from him and belittles the exact impact on lives he hopes to have.

And the villain says if they take the time to get those reinforcements, bakugo would die. What deku did was essentially the same as that other bike riding character. No one else was capable of fighting, and deku (unknowingly) bought enough time for all might as well as inspiring him. Skimmed thru the video past the 7 min mark, but the only point against deku I completely agree with is the fact that he's never punished for the reckless shit he does. Even that though I can't completely agree with because deku literally evolves from it (air force and his kick thing) and while it doesn't make him *stronger*, he learns and improves at fighting.

bakugo had an objectively ideal life and he kept shoving that down dekus throat every single time he bullied him im starting to think you just dont watch the show at all and ur just a clip watcher his motives to save people all came from being viewed as worthless he thinks as long as he can save someone then he wont be the useless worthless deku he was suppose to be its why he says instead of being the worthless deku bakugo called him deku was going to be the name of a hero someone who can save others you're comparing 14% out of 300 million people to 20% out of the entire fuckin world do you realize how stupid that is and even then black people to this day face oppression and have to spread awareness and are looked down upon for something they cannot control now imagine that but hundreds of times worse and even then nobody is outed as a racist or is cancelled because they make fun of quirkless people this mf deku is getting harassed everyday for being quirkless and not a single person does anything about it that was honestly just a stupid argument deku thought mirio would be a better user than him was literally due to his bullying and harassment as a child he still finds himself as worthless or below mirio and feels that if mirio had his power he would be 100 times better at saving people than he would when mirio becomes quirkless deku literally offers mirio the quirk and mirio says he doesnt want it the whole point of the series is that quirkless people cannot become hero's so a quirkless side character ruins the entire narrative of the show im fully convinced u made this video just to cope with the fact u keep seeing people bring up dekus character im so glad the fans dont write my hero because clearly you dont know what you're talking about at all deku and gohan are 2 different characters also saying gohans insecurities come out in battle but not dekus is actually hilarious when dekus entire troup of hurting himself and being reckless is literally due to his past and insecurities u brought up gohan getting hurt deku literally breaks his bones in every fight tf deku vs muscular we see deku at the very beginning of the fight had gotten his arm broken so he had to fight the entire time with a broken arm and then he even almost died and accepted death because he thought he held off muscular long enough to save kota Gohans power has been a huge burden to him just like deku because now they both feel the responsibility of living up to their idols gohan has the pressure of saving the entire world from cell while deku has the pressure of saving the entire world from all for one because he knows for a fact hes the only one that can its why we get the vigilante arc because everyone around deku keeps getting hurt the result of all of the things hes been burdened with come out in the form of dekus vigilante arc im not saying gohans worse or better than deku im saying you're cockriding the shit out of gohan like straight up meat riding the shit out of him please actually read my hero and stop making this rant about how gohan is "better" than deku also wtf was the entire point of the video if u were just gonna shit on deku in the anime then bring up how much better he is in the manga when the manga is literally just showcasing the out come of what horikoshi has been building up dekus character to for so long

I honesty hate Deku. The way he goted his quark is so stupid that 1 simple thing could change everything. And not to mention he got THE STRONGEST QUARK in the world AND IS STILL GWTTING MORE QUARKS. I honesty dislike that scenario where the main oc is litteraly stronger then God in his universe. And his crying GODDAMNIT COULD THEY MAKE HIM MORE SOFT. AND HOW IS HE STILL GOOD WITH BACKUGO. Like, Deku should have been the villan all along, him being the hero makes no sense
@darkwinter2009
@darkwinter2009 Год назад
Deku isn't necessarily a bad protagonist but at the same time, he isn't good either. Before anyone sends me an angry message, just to let you know, I love Deku & MHA. One of my main problems with Deku is that Deku didn't even bother to train himself before he met All Might. And I ain't talking about the 10 months that he trained, I am talking about before. He had everything that he could've used to start training early on, such as going to the gym and working out. He could've done that but he instead spent all of his life idolizing heroes instead of trying to actually become one. If Deku wants to be a hero, then why not train hard before meeting All Might? And that's all I have to say. I do have more problems but I will be sure to update this comment if I have to.
@MaksFaks-kl1zj
@MaksFaks-kl1zj 7 месяцев назад
The more glaring issue here would be that the whole 10 months training was done in 1 episode. There practically never was the time to show the struggle and pain he went through in proper way, in order to cement the fact that he did have the willpower to become a hero, even if he did not train prior, coming off as "undeserved" in the process when in reality, what Deku objectively did cannot be compared to vast majority of the population at hand. So the issue here is how it is portrayed, and it generally falls in the line of grander issues surrounding the pacing of the entire show.

Tf? Deku has never been reckless, he's been self sacrificial, and that has been brought up multiple times throughout the show. That scene where the doctor told him to tone down his power usage, as he might end up with permanent arm damage isn't the show commenting on his "reckless" behavior, it's commenting on his self sacrificial behavior that he has shown throughout the show, and how eventually the consequences of not thinking about himself will soon catch up to him. And the analyzation of Deku's "spider bite" is so fuccing poor. The hero's do NOT have the situation under control, they are sitting there on the sidelines not fighting because they don't truly care about saving Bakugou. They instead believe that, just because their quirks aren't the right match up. they can't do anything. And the show is telling us how wrong this is, because if this child, Deku, with no prior training before hand can give Bakugou more time in his life, whereas the hero's couldn't, they were in the wrong. Another poor analysis of yours was of the students actions during the all for one fight. In that fight, lida tries to stop Deku from attacking the villains because of what the police told them when they fought stain. They can't fight villains without a pro hero license. So, they don't. Deku instead finds a way to get Bakugou out of the villains grasps without fighting, thereby not breaking the law. It was smart, thought out, and NOT reckless. And you make so many more terrible points as to why Deku is a bad protag. but I'm not gonna go over them as it would make this already big block of text even bigger. But that doesn't mean Deku is a god like protag. In fact, you actually made some valid points with the toxic weakness and the stories refusal to bring up the quirkless narrative again. It's just that most of your points aren't real narrative problems. Please realize this.

Deku is an underdog. Yes he got the best power in the series from all might, but he had to earn that power. He earned it by trying to save Bakugo. (No the heroes didn't have everything under control they literally said they had their hands tied go rewatch the episode) He earned it by doing a workout scheme for a whole year that pushed him to his limit. (In fact he did one harder than the one All Might recommended.) He earned his trip to UA by saving Uraraka. He earned his mastery of one for all by thinking of strategies (Full cowling, air force). He had to struggle to get his power under control, a power that literally blows up his arms and legs. Everyone else was born with their quirk but he got it like the year he entered UA. What I don't like about Deku is that he's altruistic but not in a particularly interesting or authentic way. He'll let himself get bullied, or get severely damaged in a fight, but he always has the means to turn things around, he just needs his Shonen angry moment to convince him there's no other way. Additionally he's never significantly punished for his altruism like let's say Vash the Stampede who ends up punished for enacting kindness and just outright believing in kindness. Compare it to Kenzo Tenma from Monster, he potentially throws his entire life away to make up for one mistake and is constantly reminded his altruistic goal will lead to him losing his way and life. Deku is endlessly rewarded for his altruism, even given a legal pass in one or two occasions. Even during his edgy arc, he was just convinced by his friends he was thinking wrong rather than seeing the consequences of abandoning everyone to protect them. What makes altruistic characters interesting is then holding onto their beliefs despite the world telling them not to do so.

He needed rest,he needed to calm down, and they needed to fight together,so that they can help him to get back up so that he can carry on his goals. And yeah,afo and shigaraki could have actually attacked UA The ideology of altruism is great,but also too much is wrong and what you are talking about is self destruction No one was actually against his idea if fighting shigaraki and afo, infact willingly agreed he is the only one who should defeat him But the thing is they are willing to help him when he is injured. @@user-ey8mj4tv2p You address my interpretation of the manga rather than actually addressing the point at hand, and leaving a corny message alongside. Characters based on ideals are compelling when they set aside their well being for their ideals, and with that, there should equally be consequences. Giving Deku a few scars and occasionally saying he will suffer permanent damage with continued usage that has yet to ever be brought up again is not a consequence for holding significant stored power in his hands. Guts is a better example where he suffers a loss of senses from his use of the berserk armor and is likely to become an entity rather than a human if he continues fighting, yet he continues. It's not even self destruction, it's the willingness to persevere against any obstacle that stands in the way including their own limitations. That's what Deku lacks, he has no real limitations.

What if Instead of making characters with the idea of being "Relatable" and "Nice for the audience" We make characters that don't just have 4 states of emotions And like They act like Humans beings? Pretty wild idea, I know right? Imagine a character that can have more dept than just the emotional state that they are in the moment And even more Imagine then having a personality of their own? They could even I don't know Go against the views of the own viewers Do something that is bad in the eyes of the viewer but something logical in the context of the story To challange a new perspective But maybe that's going too far

Why didn'r deku tried to train his body when he learned that he was quirckless he was four years old sure but if he still wanted to be a hero, after a month or two he should've gone to a gym or a place that teaches martial arts because even the police get some form of training. So learning some martial arts could be really beneficial to him on his journey. Sure you could say that CQC won't be that efective against strong quirk users, and i somewhat agree to that but not all villains are overhaul, shigaraki, afo most vilains in japan aren't that strong if you watched s2 when stain met with shigaraki he beat his and kurogiri mostlly with his CQC, so he can beat s1, s2 and s3 shigaraki. Deku could team up whit someone really powerful and we know that deku is smart so he could think of some stradegies for them we saw aizawa body like 30-50 people in sesone 1 with CQC and those bandages, sure he used his quirk to erase others's quirks but some have Heteromorphic quirks but he still beat thier asses so he has no real reason to stay sad all the time.

I overall agree with the video. Midoriya is kind of a generic character that is supposed to resonate with normal kids. He couldn't have any real character development. It makes him boring. He's more like a video game avatar than a character. Even after the recent changes in the manga, it's more like his quirk got character development. He's just along for the ride. And they just dropped a very important plot thread like it never happened. I think it's because they changed the ending of the series after one of the movies had a similar ending. I would, however, like to point out that the heroes did NOT have things under control when Bakugo was being attacked by the sludge monster. They were all just standing around.

We need fanfics depicting how flawed Deku actually is and give him some consequences for his stupid actions. We need scenarios like him trying to save someone, but because of that they end up dead? Where Deku pisses me off most is that he literally gives no shit to the fact that Bakugo bullies him ALL THE TIME. Like, he's such a nice guy that unless you're a pro hero or a villain, to him, your immoral actions towards him are null and void. Bakugo tells him to jump off the roof, but instead of a bad situation, the scene is treated like comedy. Bruh, bullying=comedy? I've seen some high school anime, and bullying is never played for laughs. The scene should be serious since its an establishing character moment, but Deku IS JUST SOOOOO MORALLY ABOVE EVERYONE ELSE that his own bully's shittiness has no effect on him. Oh, it gets worse. Flashback to their childhood, Deku follows Bakugo around like a fanboy even when the other kid is straight up mean to him. Hell, he even gave Deku a demeaning nickname and he still doesn't give a shit.

I find it funny how Deku kind of stands out from the whole MHA world. Let me explain: No matter how you look at it, MHA world is pretty much realistic from the side of society and policy. This is what I actually like about it. Characters like Aizawa, Tsukauchi, All For One, Overhaul and many others feel like they actually understand this world. And here comes Deku, the good boy, saving everything and everyone. People say that "he has so much character development". But this development is useless. As the time passes, he changes? No, his hero syndrome only gets worse. When Nagant tells him that he is too blind to understand, he gets genuinely offended and says "If you've seen the darkest parts of this system, you sure should know what's good". And you know what? It "saves" Nagant. MHA world does not kick this boy into dirt to show him reality. It only proves his point. Honestly, I can hardly see Deku as an actual person. He is more like a messiah of heroes, too unrealistic and annoying in the roots.

I wish Deku didn't get the ultimate power and instead became a genius tactician and high ranking official to lead the other heros. Even without power, Deku still would've had to earn respect, trust, friends, and overcome the struggle of not being able to help his hero friends directly in battle. Also, if anything, Gohan is overrated. TotallyNotMark and Plague of Gripes made some pretty interesting notes on how Gohan was simply a mold for the main demographic of DBZ at the time and had very little character development other than "Chichi wants him to be successful and Goku wants him to be a fighter". The nice guy trope was just another angle to fit the demographic and sell the character, not fully intended to be his personality.

I understand the criticism but some of it is dekus characterization. Mha is all about what it means to be a hero. Deku is constantly putting himself in danger and is physically shown through his injuries. His character directly falls into the self sacrifice trope. His nice guy trope is also thrown into question. Deku is suppose to be the perfect idea of a hero but as the story builds it’s trown into question. The man had to start using his legs because of his self sacrificing characterization. He feels as the hero he has to shoulder everything himself and sacrifice himself for everyone and as the story comes to a head (Spoilers) He literally has to fight the people he wants to save at ua to give in and stop trying to shoulder all the weight himself. Also Deku most definitely cares about society the %20 of quirkless people just isn’t a drive of the main story and with his back story it’s mostly opinionated on how people feel about it. Of course it might not be as sad as Naruto’s considering they are completely different worlds and Naruto lives in a land full of wars and danger while mha is based on the hope of hero’s 💀 Also Deku being given his power is comparable to naruto being given his power so saying he’s not a underdog because the power he’s been give is kinda contradictory. Especially since Naruto was the son of a hokage in a strong clan with a lot of chakra and the reincarnation of someone who is literally built to make friends to add on to the fact that he also has a op power 💀 mans was always set up for success when u think of it.
