I wonder: is it immersion that was the biggest benefit, or was it novelty? Our brains LOVE novelty and will focus intensely on it, and VR is still a novelty for most of us.

If it's something that moves your focus from the procedure to something else, it works. I used to hate going to the dentist, and I ended up with a cavity when I was around 7 years old. They decided to fix it, and I was scared out of my mind. However, mother had thought to bring a tiny portable radio with earphones, so I blasted classical music while the dentist dug around and fixed my mouth, and it worked.

Right, but if it's novelty, rather than immersion, it will only work a couple times until the novelty wears off. I wasn't meaning at all that it was a bad thing, just that the conclusion seems a little contrived with such a small study. Honestly, it wouldn't help me either way. For me the pain comes from the ultrasonic vibrations more than anything else, drives straight through my bones (OMFG I want to cry when they that thing touches my teeth!). The scraping and drilling and everything else doesn't bother me at all, it's weird as heck.

***** Oh yeah, I definitely remember those. Albeit I don't recall them being painful as much as they were chilling. They felt cold, and that coldness propagated throughout my skull as if it was riding on the vibrations. Very odd sensation. I still don't think that it has so much to do with novelty or even VR as it has to do with moving your focus from one thing to another, at the very least when it has to do with stress. If you were to present the patient with a simple task which they have to accomplish while the procedure is taking place, I'm sure that a lot of stress would just vanish. As for pain, I'm not too convinced.

That's basically what they're saying is that the VR moves their attention away from the task. But they're saying it's more effective than TV because of immersion, and they didn't compare it to other attention drawing tasks. It may well be the immersion, but this study seems like it was too small and didn't look enough in depth for them to be stating that so pointedly, especially when we have other recent studies showing just how much our brains love to be distracted by new experiences.

***** I don't think it is the immersion. The player controls the character's movements, so their focus is shifted towards moving the character rather than freaking out about being at the dentists office. But yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you.

Am I weird in that what calms me the most is watching or concentrating on the event... Tattoos, drawing blood, IV, body piercing, birth. The one thing that bothered me the most about the dentist is that I couldn't see or feel what was going on. I think this would freak me out even more.

I don't think that's weird. Though getting blood drawn hurts a bit more than I remember. I can't imaging getting struck in the head again or impaled in my right knee or left knee again. That would hurt a lot worse though seeing it lets your mind understand the severity of the injury or whatever... Seeing it helps. I often think I would commit suicide if I permanently lost vision in even one eye! Mainly because I rely on it so much.

Same here. If I'm able to see when it happens, lets say a flu shot, there's no surprise and I can stop myself from reacting to it. Tensing can cause a lot of extra pain when needles are involved.

You can't *feel* the dentists working on your teeth? o.O The number one reason why I despise the dentist is because of the vibrating feeling you get in your entire skull. They use some pretty brutal tools if you ask me.

When I was a kid, my dentist had a television specially mounted on the ceiling. I watched The Magic School Bus a lot ahah, I actually didn't mind that dentist that much as a child because of that dentist.

As a child, I had my face stitched together when i lost my eye. For some reason, I was given nothing for the pain. Instead, the doctors put a piece of paper over my other eye, so I couldnt see the instruments as they operated. Each incision and needle came surprise and pain.. How would a virtual reality beach take away that kind of pain?

A nurse that was administering my clexane (subcultaneous jab, stings like hell) had me look left/right over and over and over again and would jab me during that - the sensory input distracts you and you feel nothing - seems like this tech would do a similar thing.

I have been to the dentist so much as a kid, that it no longer bothers me... though I am also fully resistant to the external numbing they use, so they have to give me multiple shots in my mouth, even then I sometimes fall asleep at the dentist.

I would suggest it works because I have gone an entire day playing video games and didn't not feel any need for food, water or bathroom as well as ignored the odd position I was laying in as my head was tilted to the shoulder.

You kidding me? I love the dentist! My doctor and his staff are very good people who know what they're doing. It's like going to a day spa for my teeth, they massage my teeth oh-so-nicely and they look GORGEOUS. And they only use local anesthesia like novacaine, even for wisdom teeth surgery or a root canal. The only thing scary about the dentist IS THE BILL ($1500 for two mandatory lower veneers is the most frightening number I've seen; they were mandatory because one of them was chipped and severely crowded from the wisdom teeth).

I could have told you that. Whenever I get cavity filled I always imagine I'm in an old 1940s airplane (since that's what it sounds like) and it significantly reduces the pain. It's easy to see how if a person completely tuned it out they wouldn't feel pain

Using the VR is like going into a meditative state, your calm, breathing slowly with your eyes close, your mind is at peace and you are in a beautiful place. But for people who are doing it for the first time are going to not find it easy to keep your mind calm, clear and peaceful but besides that the point is I think this it a dumb idea for dentist to use this on patients I mean this will probably hurt your eyesite more then sitting in front of the tv. Plus I want to know and see what the dentist is doing with my teeth.

I actually like going to the dentist, even for fillings. The chairs are always so comfy. I guess I just haven't had a dentist slip a drill or puncture my tongue, aka any reason to hate the dentist yet.

Pain at dentist is complicated. If you brush and floss regularly then no pain. There is a sliding scale for which the less you brush and floss the more pain you get. Smokers and coffee drinkers hurt more. Crowns, bridges, and extractions is where high level of pain comes from. I once had a dentist that was too gentle on me. Barely touched anything. I chose a different dentist because I knew he didn't do anything to clean my teeth or gums. Waste my time. Another time getting a crown the pain meds injection hurt so much I didn't take the pain med shot during the 2nd part of the crown install. It was still painful but the numbing of my mouth was worst. Dr said I have high pain tolerance because she rarely has anyone willing to try without the numbing med.

My girlfriend is a periodontist surgeon, and I myself have been to the dentist plenty of times, as a matter of fact today I had a filling done. So let me make this perfectly clear: There is no substitute in modern science that works as a real pain killer. Modern pain killers are way more advanced (and I still can't fathom people in the US/Canada still use the laughing gas) than 10-20 years ago, and the needles are smaller etc. so they work better/faster/longer. So anything besides a simple tartar cleaning or similar is not going to work with VR or any other crap you try to push onto people because 'it's cool' :P
