What panic? The panic was gone a few hours after trying github copilot for the first time. I never fell for overhyping after that.

People aren't worried that Devin AI will replace all jobs, but this hypothetical 2x increase in productivity from empowering existing employees is not likely to be matched with a sudden 2x increase in workload. Hypothetically, each team could then very easily get away with hiring one less junior engineer. There are greater risks and costs associated with hiring a new employee than with trying out Devin AI, and engineers would always be reviewing the code to make sure it's up to par either way. But I think a good takeaway is that technological advancements/automation has always existed and there is no other approach except adapting to the changes regardless. Also check out Internet of Bugs video on it and you'll feel much better.

The big thing is that these AI systems can't think like a human can, which means your complex system needs to be built by people to make it effective. However, if an engineer can deliver 10x the work with the tool, then you need 9 fewer engineers to do the work, so it will start eating into the field.

Yes. But... How many Jobs had to be created to create tractors? How many specjalists have to be to mantain this in fabrics. Is like when machines replaced humans in factors but Are we jobless now because of this? No. We have plenty of Jobs to manage this. We are humans and we want to be better and better

I uderstand your view but If it is just one side. Ai angineers, resarchers, Mlops, Aiops, Cloud Ai architects. 20 ago years It was insane. Now it is future. Think about it. After Saying to your aunt that you are an architect she propably would say "So you are desinging houses?" "No aunt Im cloud ai infrastructure architect". My english is not so good but I Hope that you uderstand what I mean

I knida agree with you, AI still can't implement approx 500 lines of code and generates a lot of errors and bugs, One thing useful that it broke the barrier of the headache googling about the syntax, classes and functions on github and stackoverflow refactoring the code on the project, that's it.

I agree with this take. One thing no one has said, that these LLM is also opening up more opportunities to solve problems with software. Software is inherently different than farming because we only have so much land on earth (we'd have more farmers if we were multiplanetary). Solving problems with software is limitless. However, solving problems with software so that people pay you for it is a different issue.

the whole point of view of clement is very insightful, however one thing i would like to say is that, comparing AI to any other machine is totally pointless, like the analogy of farmers being replaced by tractors, or computers replacing office workers. AI is something fundamentally different.

I understand the business context you mentioned in this video. But, what happens when a company implements a 'high auto-test coverage rate' + 'AI agent' + 'human test manager' to maintain system consistency? I guess most of SWEs cannot compete with that strategy. At the end of the day, I think the real dilemma is whether a company can afford an AI-based development team, especially considering the competition for computing resources in the future. Let's pray that the computing resources won't be cheap enough to extinguish SWEs.
