Well said. I dont know if I personally would say books are "better" than movies... but more like different. But yeah, if you want to think things through the movies certainly aren't great for that! Are there things you think were specifically better in the books than the movies? Or maybe the other way around?

@@thegreyhavens167 vorites are Gandalf, Sam, Aragorn, etc. Just to make a few. However, I don’t believe they are the masterpieces everyone says they add (though I will agree they are spectacular). Some characters have been changed for the worse in my opinion. Gimli was sorta reduced to comic relief. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s annoying. Faramir’s character was completely changed, screwing it up. I’m referring to the scene where in the book he lets Frodo and Sam go at Ithilien, but in the movie takes them back to Osgiliath. This goes against his character in the book. Also, Denethor was kinda portrayed as beyond stupid, when there were more factors in the book that led to his madness. Yes, Boromir’s death was explained in the movie, but the hidden palantir is not shown, which would’ve been a cool twist before his death. And that’s the thing. Peter Jackson left soooo much stuff out. I’ll pick on Fellowship, here. Because this is where I think it is most evident. Most of the first half of the book is either missing or changed. The time it takes for Gandalf and Frodo to talk about the ring, Farmer Maggot, Crickhollow, The Black Forest and the Old Willow, Tom Bombadil, the Barrow Downs, and Glorfindel, just to name a few. I understand not having every single detail on the screen, which is ok, but these are entire chapters! I 100% understand why Jackson left this stiff out, though. In order to keep the flow of the movie, stuff had to be cut. Whatever. Here’s my question. Shelob’s fight scene was moved to ROTK, because Frodo and Sam needed more to do in that movie. Doing that took out a portion of TTT that was pretty cool! So Jackson made stuff up to compensate. The Warg fight and Fararmir’s choices come to mind. Here’s the thing: if they were willing to move the end of TTT, maybe they could’ve moved the ending of TFOTR to TTT. Doing this would make two things possible. One, it would eliminate the pointless action scenes that had no point to exist. Two, it might allow for some of the cut scenes in FOTR to see the light of day. The only issue I see is this messing with the flow of the movie, But I think Jackson could’ve made it work. It would’ve been so cool to see some of the mentioned cut scenes in the movie. (Even if it was just extended, I still would’ve liked it!) Again, no hate towards Jackson here. He did a phenomenal job with what he was given, which was a pretty big task. Just some things annoy me. Like for example (last ruing I think 😆), Arwen having a bigger role in the movie when she was only mentioned in the book? Like I get they couldn’t have Glorfindel save Frodo just to throw him away, but Arwen? This is where I think the old LOTR did good. They had Legolas save Frodo, which made a degree of sense. Having Arwen’s fate tied to the ring also makes no sense and I won’t even try to explain why. Arwen did not need to be on every single poster, when she had little to do, even with her buff in the movies. The only reason she is on the posters is because they needed a female on there. It’s very Anjou ikr to see a minor character on otherwise epic posters. So that’s my mini-rant. 😆 Sorry you have to read so much, but this is what I think of the movies vs. books. The books will always come first to me, because I love all the detail, but there’s a lot the movies get right, and are still fantastic to come back to. 😁

What I said was that I loved the action scenes in lotr, the books could simply not compare to the epicness and emotion of the movies. Helms deep, Pelenor fields, and the Blake Gate battles come to mind. Also the acting was great. Some of my favorites were… (This is where the top and long comment starts!) ⬆️

They do answer the questions and where TF is Tom Bombadil in the films? I know he's OP and whimsical but considering how musical the shitty hobbit films are he could have been included. I would love to have seen the scene where Tom puts on the ring and doesn't disappear, he treats it like a fun trinket.

That was my assumption, the ring was still 'attached' to Smeagol through Gollum but Bilbo though still haunted by being a Ringbearer was free of the Ring because he willingly gave it up.

Yep, this is the case. The ring still had grip over Gollum whereas, while still tempting to Bilbo, he gave it up. That kind of act heals a marred soul which is what the ring does to people. Never fully healed Bilbo, but it removed the majority of the ring's stain.

@@AppHangout I don’t know if it’s ever been elaborated before, but it feels like the ring is a (I forgot what the word is) but it represents drugs. If you give it up willingly, it still is tempting for you but you can be better. If it’s taken and you still crave it, it always has it’s control on you

Makes kinda more sense to me, with seeing how Orcs are described in the books. And also, Gandalf couldnt read an entire archive worth of documents in just mere days :D

@@kumaferumin makes perfect sense, because watching the movie when Gandalf goes to the archives in Gondor, I knew that a decent amount of time had to have passed for that journey back and forth. But they make it seem like it was only a day or two after Bilbos party that he returns to tell Frodo to leave the Shire.

I think Gollum stated that with Ring's destruction he would instantly crumble into dust. He stayed around way past his natural expiration date, while Bilbo also started to quickly catch up to his natural age after Ring was gone.

That's a good point actually. Thanks! I always viewed the Stopping Time power of the rings in Rivendell and Lorien just making humans feel sleepy / ethereal / confused on time / etc. But it could be age? That's a good thought! Also, BB is a pretty saucy dude by this time, so I also feel it might be his way of just letting everyone know what he thinks about all the blathering dialog! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bilbo also has an easier break from the ring, (relatively) as he gave it up instead of having it taken from him.

@@poohbear4821 and after he lost the ring he had already basically maxxed out his aging. That is my point. Bilbo had the ring for 50 years and “hadn’t aged a day” until he gave it up. Gollum had possession of it for much longer and he obviously DID age. Gollum’s heart, however, was never as pure as Bilbo’s. Perhaps Gollum mutated moreso due to his own depravity. Spitballing here. The two got different results from their possession of the ring BUT their cases are barely even comparable so their results varied.

...at a huge cost ... Bilbo lived for effectively only 70 years, young for a Hobbit, Frodo effectively 36, Smeagol lived a miserable extended life, with 33 years before and 78 after, 111 is OK for a Hobbit

Frodo, I actually don't know how old he was by the time he left for the West. Gollum lived for over 500. Nobody lived to just 111.

The disappearing of the Dwemer, the Dragon Break, achieving Chim, the Dreamer, the Thalmor's plan to make Men non-existent.... it just goes on and on. Agreed 100%. I see him as not aging, just adapting to a pretty crazy lifestyle. I mean he lived in a slimy pool of water with no sun for 500 years! If I'm in the water for only like 500 seconds I get all wrinkly. Honestly, he looks pretty good considering! 🤔😅

Gollum is the definition of peak performance. Bro is over a century but even without that life changing Ring juice he never ages. Why? Bro stays healthy. Our man Smeagol works out. He takes long walks, swims and climbs everyday, he can spend years on the move with only minor breaks. There's no terrain or weather this beast of a man can't handle, he strides proudly through any climate. His gorilla style walk also means that his arms get to work as well during these exercises. What's more he ears all natural. Homie makes sure that no artifical chemicals are ever added to his food. This culinary man can even taste when the food isn't natural and spits it out right away. He has a healthy diate of Fish, meats and insects, all which he hunts himself. You'd think greens would be neccissary to stay in good health but our man Smeagol proves that just like an all green diate an all meat diate has its benefits. The only artifical element in this mans diate is his Ring juice but as he has proven he does not need it to stay healthy anymore. Gollum is the peak of health, a true inspiration for any man and you be that the doctors hate him because he proves that with nothing but an all natural diate, active life style and a few years on ring juice, you can become a strong long lived, practically immortal, man.

After 500 years look so good you will not... I would suggest that Smeagol's failing appearance has less to do with "aging" and more to do with his lifestyle choices. He lives in total darkness, which made him pale and his eye grew large. He lives in a wet slimy environment and spends way too much time swimming. And he is nutritionally starved from only eating fish (and occasional Goblin). (also, been FOREVER since I thought of the Crypt Keeper. Been laughing on and off for 10 minutes just thinking about him!) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Smeagol had it way longer than Isilduir, Bilbo, or Frodo, sure.... but not Sauron. Sauron had it for like over 1800 years before he was defeated the first time.

True - physically he was the same, but mentally he was more sleepy and a bit of a grumpy boomer. Gandalf suggests it's because in Elrond's house he is being healed a bit from the Ring infection (Elrond was the greatest healer in the world at the time). What do you think? How do you read it?

Great comment. I mean explosive chain reactions sound pretty cool. Dare I search online for person falling into lava 🤔?? I do remember in an interview Jackson said they had a lot of discussions about the lava. Does Gollum sink or float? Does the ring really float? In the end I think he said they decided to do whatever they thought people would accept the best, as opposed to what was real.

Wooky, I could def see how you would read it that way. Though I suspect it's really the movies that are bleeding into your read. Being one that read the books many times before the films came out, I feel pretty confident saying that no one pictured Bilbo as old in Rivendell. It was kinda one of the shocking moments in the film that people talked about online just after (but it totally worked great! It might be better, honestly!). But let me politely give you a couple things to think about: - Smeagol was without the ring for an entire life time (~70 years). He was just a physical and energetic and strong as ever. He was def not aging normally at all. It's proof that one can still get extra life even after the ring has moved on. - No one in the book ever says Bilbo looks older. After the ring is destroyed, they immediately describe him as old, but not in Rivendell. I would think the author or characters would say it. Not saying it infers he looks the same as before. - All mortals that go to Rivendell or Lothlorien get sleepy/enchanted/etc due to the power of the 3 rings. They kinda stop time in those places. Remember how it's hard for all the hobbits to remember how long they were there, was it 30 days or 30 minutes or 30 years? I think this is the source of the sleepiness. - Lastly, I know a lot of people (me included : ) that get sleepy and nap a lot - and I def don't think I'm an old man 😅 There you go! Or at least that's my personal read of it. What do you think?

For Smeagols part I consider him like a drug addict that's been on that precious so long his physical makeup is altered to a point where his life is almost tied to the ring. Like a living wraith almost. And you're probably right about my perception of Bilbo being affected by the movie first. Seems like I remember that he was being cared for in Rivendale, like there was a nursing type figure helping him around. And doesn't he allude to some comments like, "2 more years and I'll match that old Hobbit that was 133 years old, I bet I can beat him." Comments like that seem to play more into mentioning his growing frailty even if there isn't a direct commenting on his appearance of aging. And I thought the unsurety of time was more of a Lothlorien effect than a Rivendale one?

Agreed in the movies maybe.. But even in the movies hard to say. If his people are like hobbits they should live to like 90 (similar to us today) and he was without the ring for 77 YEARS - so if he was aging normally after 77 years he would have totally grown old and died long ago. Even at 1/2 aging speed he would have totally grown old and died. So if he is getting older, it's super slow to me. In the books, he actually gets Stronger and more Vibrant when he loses the ring and looks healthier and more spry/strong. But that's due to him leaving the cave and getting more exercise and better food and better lifestyle I think - or at least that's how I read it. What do you think?

@@thegreyhavens167I think that due to the fact that Gollum was openly exposed to the ring for so long, he morphed into a different creature altogether. A creature to which different rules in terms of aging apply. He became nothing but a ghoulish creature, living through his urge for the ring, his life being bound to the ring‘s life. At least in the 1980 Return of the King movie, Gollum says to Sam that if the ring is destroyed, he will turn to dust. He was either being overly dramatic or he told the truth (I don’t know if Gollum said this in the book as well). Either way, it‘s the sickness of the ring that most likely keeps him alive.

True. Being an Engineer myself I agree. Honestly lava is NEVER as cool as it should be. All those Sat morning cartoons made is seem sooo much more awesome. 😑 That being said, if he floated on the lava in the movie no one would have believe it, right? 🤣🤣🤣

Maybe the ring made Gollum extremely dense or the fires of Mount Doom are a less dense material. Maybe it is the ring that submerges him.

Lava is also colder than a metalworker's forge, probably to cool to actually destroy the ring. However, forging things in lava is a common fantasy trope. So I'm willingly suspending my disbelief for this one.
