The laser cannons in ride being off also makes the scene especially weird, because the ride vehicles still stop and double back to avoid being run over by the cannons, except that’s not an issue. So if you’ve never been on the ride where the cannons work, it just feels like the droid driving is going a little crazy or taking a moment for a really tense dance break.

That's because the die hard Disney fans refuse to admit this and even go online bashing Universal. WTF does Universal have to do with this?? They always say crap like "Universal's rides are always broken. Disney takes care of their rides." UH UH. I went to Universal in 2020 and it was in better shape than Disney World. True, one or two attractions needed an overhaul but it was nowhere as bad as some of the Disney videos I've been watching for over a YEAR....

"Soarin Over the World" at least makes thematic sense at Epcot, having it replace "Soarin Over California" at California Adventure was such a boneheaded move they keep bringing back the original for limited engagements.

One of my favorite Disney attractions ever was Alien Encounter. It gave a palpable sense of dread beginning with Tim Curry’s voice for the robot SIR in the pre-show. They had Kathy Najimy for comic relief. The downgrade to Stitch’s Great Escape was a heartbreaking loss. Now that is gone too.

I remember experiencing Alien Encounter as a teenager. After doing it for the first time, I immediately did it again just to see if it would still be scary since I know what was going to happen ahead of time. It was still scary because of the dark and jump scares, that I would equate to someone making you flinch, it was unavoidable. You were going to try and squirm out of your seat every time when the monster is breathing in your face with those projected 3D sounds on top of the hot breath. Pretty amazing. The funniest thing, there were older men talking about how they weren't scared outside the attraction on my 2nd go, I sat right next to them, they were screaming like little girls inside, LOL.

I’m surprised Test Track didn’t make this list! The current version of the ride is little more than wood cutouts with reflective tape.
@Guide2WDW
@Guide2WDW Месяц назад
Very good suggestion! Test Track 2.0 was more of a side-grade for me. The Tron-esque visuals are cool, and I find the car designer game fun. But they made the story of the ride really muddled, the whole “see your design on the ride” thing is super buggy, and the scenes are less memorable than 1.0. I could definitely see the argument that it’s a downgrade though. Really hoping that the upcoming reimagining of the ride will be an upgrade.

I have an idea of how imagineers could in theory fix the cannons in Rise at Galaxy's Edge. Redesign them so they don't move in front of the vehicles. But they move above them with a recoil like effect and maybe even shoot out smoke like they are overheating, That could be the reason that the R5s are scared to move past them. Just an idea.

I totally agree about the Imagination Pavilion tragedy! They ruined it!😢 that opening scene with Dreamfinder, the Dreamcatcher and Figment was magical! That was truly top level imagineering we will likely never see again. 😢 The fact that RotR has also lost its best effects is heartbreaking as well.
@Guide2WDW
@Guide2WDW Месяц назад
I still have very vivid memories of how incredible the Dreamcatcher was - it's a shame it wasn't preserved and updated in some way. That's one of the best things about Disney Parks. People have been going on Haunted Mansion and Pirates for generations - and they've been updated in ways that really preserve the experience. My big wish for D23 is a new overhaul of Figment that brings back Dreamfinder.
@user-ue1pf9wn3m
@user-ue1pf9wn3m Месяц назад
The Seas with Nemo and Friends- It's hard to compare the original with this relaunch, but the relaunch looks like 5 different group projects meshed together with effects that don't work well or at all. The jellyfish scene was done by a kinder garden class the night before the assignment was due. It's crazy how they could have added a really cool scene here (like from Na'vi River Journey) to immerse you into the ocean. The Anglerfish animatronic is rarely working. The animated tunnel should have shields around the projectors on the floor so (1) you can't see them and (2) it doesn't blind you and spoil the effect. This is something that is prevalent throughout the ride- they didn't take the time to conceal most of the projectors/lighting effects. Overall, very sloppy and not up to Disney standards. This could be so much better with just a few upgrades and maintenance.

For the record, Kodak didn't think digital cameras would work because at the time, the storage media could only hold 2 or 3 low quality images at a time and since the internet was rare, you couldn't just upload them to have them printed. It was just one of those cases where they came out with a game changing device way before the rest of technology needed to make it work could catch up.
@Guide2WDW
@Guide2WDW Месяц назад
That's a great point. Also, the first digital camera they developed was *so* far away from being anywhere close to a consumer device - but a huge tech innovation. So, did I give them an unfairly harsh time about that in this script? Yes. But did they also ruin one of the best rides of all time? Also yes.
@zombiesmith5735
@zombiesmith5735 21 день назад
The main problem with the Yeti in Expedition Everest is that they would have to, essentially, cut a big hole in the side of the mountain in order to properly fix the animatronic. It’s a big design flaw that Disney should have been well aware of when the built the attraction.

Am I nuts? In my first time on Rise of the Resistance (Disneyland), an Imperial officer boarded our tractor-beamed shuttle and scared the pants off of us. It set up such an atmosphere of dread that “the ride” just disappeared, and escape was everything. Now, nobody I know even remembers that aspect of the ride. That female cast member had exactly the right amount of creepy authoritarian disdain that I would have confessed to anything.

Communicore used to have an education center for teachers and school groups. They also could answer anything about the parks. I once stopped and asked about the ferry boats that go from TTS to MK and who built them. I also had quesstions about the central computer center and the design. I agree with these critiques of Disney World attractions, but I would reserve the worst Minus of all time for Disneyland's People Mover. It was "upgraded" to the Rocket Rods using the Test Track ride system in an effort to give TomorrowLand another E-Ticket class ride at a fraction of the budget. Unfortunately, it used the original People Mover track supports, which weren't up to the task of withstanding the ride's forces. Even the effort to slow down the ride vehicles around the turns (which created a herky-jerky lame ride experience) didn't prevent the supports from experiencing structural fatigue approaching catastrophic failure. On top of that, a low guest-per-hour capacity and unreliability shut the Rocket Rods down, and the remaining infrastructure was too damaged to revert back to the People Mover. A case of an attraction that was literally upgraded out of existence. The same thing nearly happened to Disneyland's Space Mountain, but that's another story...
@Guide2WDW

Both the People Mover and Rocket Rods were before my time visiting Disneyland, but I find that whole ordeal fascinating! It's such a shame because having that track empty is such a detraction in the land. "Literally upgraded out of existence" - Love that phrase.

Rocket Rods or Eisner's folly a classic case of if it's not broken don't fix it. The Disneyland people mover was beloved nobody wanted it to be a E ticket attraction. I was a teen in the late 80s early 90s my friends and I loved the people mover sure it wasn't thrilling but it had this cool 60s swinging soundtrack and you could just chill for 10 minutes. I look at Tomorrowland today and I want to cry because now it's a eyesore a compilation of half measures and compromise and it's lost all it's identity. I would love to see Disney take the wrecking ball to Tomorrowland and completely rebuild bringing it back to it's previous glory. However I don't have any confidence in Disney's current management.

Two things about Imagination. I went on Journey into Imagination for the last time in 97. Wow, it was in such a sad state at that point. The ride felt like it was struggling to move and half the animatronics weren't moving. I guess they new its days were number and were not really keeping it up. Journey into Your Imagination was better when it opened (I mean other than not having Figment of course). So many of the effects worked so much better then. The sound effect room used to be so much better. I am sure they turned it down because it scared kids but they should have changed it to something that wasn't scary but still showed off the impressive sound it is capable of.

I went to Animal Kingdom during it's opening year. I still prefer the original Kilimanjaro Safari (poachers) way more than the "zoo tour" we have now. I rode RotR for the first time last December 2023. I was so blown away that I didn't notice the lack of the cannons. It was only when I got home & watched a full ride thru video that I noticed the effect was gone. I wish it was there, but if that's what it takes to keep the ride working I can live with it. (Both Kylo effects were fully operational! Yea!!)

I'm a huge Stitch fan but even I thought that "chili dog burping Stitch" was in poor taste and not at all in line with his character of being an alien that didn't receive all of his genetic programming in creation. After all Stitch's entire movie Lilo & Stitch is based on Autism and development disabilities. Reducing stitch to regurgitating something based on fart jokes was by far the worst decision Disney Executives had made with refurbishing Alien Encounter. There were so many better ways to include Stitch in that attraction without resorting to Farting Sounds/Noises. Also toilet papering the Castle was in my opinion a cheaply thrown together" how do we dress up the castle again" to mark Stitch's arrival to the Park. Stitch may be mischievous but whoever's idea it was to toilet paper the Castle and make farting noises a part of the refurb of Alien Encounter, I sincerely hope that person was fired.

Totally agree that Stitch was a downgrade of Alien Encounter. I would have featured that attraction, but it's been closed for a few years now and I was only covering rides that are still active. But everything you say is right on the point. They haven't done Stitch justice at WDW. Stitch is in the Tiki Room at Tokyo Disneyland, and I've heard that it's actually very charming and fun. Here's a video of it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TIxe_85hNSg.html

The Haunted Mansion has seen better days. I have compiled a very long list of effects that no longer work quite right, light levels that aren’t right, sound levels that aren’t right, etc. During my most recent visit in March, the Ghost Host narration in my doom buggy was silent until the ballroom scene. It’s aggravating.

The time to fix the yeti is coming up quickly though. Once all the new stuff coming to DAK opens up in 3-5 years, which will also be just after the 20 year mark for everest, it will be about time to retrack the ride. With all that new capacity it will be a good time to close it without having too much impact on ops. And if they have to get into the building to do that, it makes perfect sense to seize that opportunity to fix mr yeti as well. If they dont do it then, then I doubt it will ever happen.

Controversial opinion: I like soarin over the world MUCH more. I appreciate the craftsmanship in SOC, but with that film I always get sick because of the shaky camera and sometimes blurryness. The scents are very beautiful and the pictures itself are very pretty and impressive. But I like the transitions in over the world so much more too. And I don’t get sick 😂

I didn't care for SOC either. I'm used to over the world. When they brought SOC back for those few months earlier this year I couldn't wait for it to be over with, and honestly IDK if it was just me but I thought all of the scents for each scene smelled the same, and I didn't smell the orange scent everyone raved about

I like it better because it is better resolution and transitions. Though I've heard the original resolution of California is better than the one they've been running and for some reason they don't fix it. Hopefully they will add something when they have to redo the ending scene. I mean, they have to redo the ending scene, right? Right, Bobby? You know you have to pay for that now that you smashed up the middle of the park?

On Soaring, since the attraction has multiple theaters, can they do both films, as The Great Movie Ride used to do? A single queue which splits into two near the end, one side going left the other going right, the cast member sorting guests randomly although they may request a side.

Gotta add that the Kodak decision to downsize the ride was also because the original opening to the right where you fly with Dreamfinder was, just like the Yeti, super ambitious and constantly broke. Kodak was outright refusing to fix the hook that synced the ride to Dreamfinder's machine, so they were forced to downgrade.

Being super pedantic, your statement at 8:45 is technically incorrect. The full name of the ride is Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. The ride takes place on a fictional mountain called the “Forbidden Mountain” that has a train that traverses said mountain and would take you to the base camp of Mt. Everest if not for the broken track. The mountain facade of the ride is portraying the forbidden mountain. So it is not ‘based on a real mountain’ unless you count the name only.
@Guide2WDW
@Guide2WDW Месяц назад
That’s definitely a good distinction, and I’m kicking myself that I forgot that detail. I’d still argue that the spirit of my statement is correct: Imagineering drew inspiration from a real world location to create the ride, just like with Matterhorn. Probably “they’re the only two Disney rides named after real mountains” would be more accurate.

Test Track has had a couple of changes over the years and another one coming I think. But back in 1997 WDW was giving previews of what was going to be a NASCAR racing experience. But when Disney didn't build it to NASCARs specs, they backed out and did not give Disney the approval. So now we have Test Track.

Disneyland was always my park, and I was excited to share that experience with my wife after not going for nearly 20 years. I talked up Indiana Jones extensively as it was my favorite ride. To my huge disappointment in late 2022, major portions of Indy were not functioning, such as the iconic boulder chase. Additionally, many of the fire effects seemed diminished or non-existent. Overall a huge let down! In general, Indy just seemed tired and broken (kinda like the movie franchise). Anyway, I hope it has seen some love in the last 1.5 years.

Enchanted Tiki Room WDW version after they ditched "Under New Management" was top on my list of downgrades (at least DL one is intact). It's a shell of the original. Also, I was told by a cast member that the reason they changed Rise of the resistance was because they had to cut out a certain number of seconds due to a California law during the pandemic that limited the amount of time that people could be in an enclosed ride vehicle. So they had to shave off a certain number of minutes. Probably doesn't apply to the gun room scene though since the vehicles go through the same dance, just without the guns moving.

I need to make a few corrections regarding Expedition Everest and Matterhorn: 1. Matterhorn didn't debut its yeti animatronics. Those were added after Expedition Everest opened in order to sort of tie the two rides together. 2. Expedition Everest, despite the title, actually isn't based on Mt. Everest itself, but rather a fictional "Forbidden Mountain" in between the ride station and Mt. Everest base camp. The closest real-world mountain to the Forbidden Mountain, based on its placement and shape, is Pomouri Peak. 3. Disney actually did put a lot of effort into fixing the Yeti. They reinforced the Yeti's foundation and mountings, adjusted and tweaked the force on the pneumatic cylinders, and have even replaced individual parts of the animatronic. The problem is that every time they manage to fix it, something else breaks during testing.
@Guide2WDW
@Guide2WDW Месяц назад
Thank you for writing in and sharing your insights. My understanding is that the Harold the Yeti figures were added to Matterhorn in 1978, which were updated in 2015 for the 60th Anniversary. I definitely dropped the ball on the Forbidden Mountain location, and saying "only two rides with real mountains in their names" would have been more accurate. And I didn't know about those specifics about Disney's attempts to fix the Yeti! Very fascinating.

I honestly find Soarin over the world much better than over California, even with the bending Eiffel Tower. In September I rode the California version in Epcot, the film was rough, the transitions are abrupt and the quality of the image was not great. But that’s just my opinion. For Epcot, the over the world makes a lot more sense. I’d love to see a new version with the countries from world showcase. Edit: in both versions, the soundtrack is among the greatest of all of Disney rides (but again, just my 2 cents)
