Going through the ins-and-outs of why I bought this Truck Camper. The Palomino SS1240Truck Camper has been one of the best campers I have ever owned and I have owned a few campers in my lifetime.

Agree 100%. I sold my heavy hard-sided camper and bought a pop-up a few months ago. Great MPG, handling, acceleration and breaking. I can go anywhere. No more white knuckle driving for me.

Thanks for the comment. I understand all that. My 5th wheel is worthless when it comes to remote camping, and I go places where any trailer besides a teardrop would not fit. Even though this pop-up may take a little longer to set up and take down, it is well worth it. Thanks again JF

18:00 This guy gets it. I've lived on small sailboats for the last 15 years. inside showers are a marketing gimmick. Totally useless. Baby wipes deodorant, and shower ashore a couple of times a week, and you're good to go. Composting toilets work great too BTW. Much less odor and maintenance.

Thanks for the comment. We use a composting toilet when we dry camp for sure, and we have a solar shower as well when we are out for more than a couple of days or so. But just for two nights, those wipes are the best. Thanks again.

I have two Soft side pop ups. I love the aerodynamics! Great set up. Thank you for the review and the insight. Absolutely it is a refuge and you can go anywhere you want with a pop of a roof! Not sure if you have but look up stealth module for the diesel. It is a game changer. It is plug and play upgrade and wakes up your truck. Got one on my Cummins.

Thanks for the comment. I just hope mine winters good. With a lot of bad comments and reviews on the roof lifts on these things, I am crossing my fingers. About the Dodge......After making a few trips back and forth to Texas, the cost of fuel and the rough ride did me in. I ended up trading her off for more comfort and better fuel milage. It was a hard decision, but my back and pocket book won that fight. If we would have kept it then yes, I was looking at chips for better fuel and power. Thanks again for the comment. JF

Also remember that the heater in the camper circulates the air through the water tank and lines that keeps them thawed out if you use a separate heater it won't do that and they will freeze if you're in very cold weather

We bought a Palamino 1240 last year. Agree completely with the shower/toilet situation with the 1251 and that also cuts down on the room for the dinette. Toilet is all you really need anyway. We have a pop up privacy shelter that I store between the cab and the camper in the void between the bumpers. We use that and run the shower head in to be able to shower outside. We have been all over the country from glacier national, Yellowstone, the tetons and the badlands with it and its performed flawlessly. Like you said, we have owned motorhomes, travel trailers, toy haulers and this by far is our favorite of everything we have owned. Also, we carry a cheap harbor freight hitch rack with waterproof boxes and use that as well for extra storage. The smaller size mounts up and doesn't affect or make contact with the scissor steps. Thanks for the comment. Sounds like you have a great system! The plan was to have the same shower set up as yours. We have the pop up and everything, but they did not put the external shower on my camper like I ordered. It was almost a deal breaker for sure, but being it took 6 months to build and we drove all that way and sat there all day for the fitting we decided we could live without it as long as they adjusted the price. Like I said in the video, we just use those body wipes or the camp showers when we stay somewhere with one. I have one of those hitch racks and when we are out for more than a couple of days I have an external black tank that sits on it as well as extra gas cans for the generator. Seems to work out great. We love our 1240 and hope it gives us a few more years. Good luck and safe travels. JF

When packing up, close everything up and turn on the fan to blow outward so the suction will pull all your sides Inwards, when the roof is coming down. That way you don't have to go around and push the sides in. Hope this helps and saves you time .

All good. Yup, understand. We tried it, but we usually have too much stuff packed and can't get the fan over the bed. We also tried to drop it and then load, but I kept hitting my head. I have a better plan this summer.

I have the SS 1251 Badland Edition I've been living in 9 months now I'm out in Colorado around Grand Junction right now staying in the high desert area for the winter but I go through a bottle of propane every 3 days I like staying warm it's getting down into the single digits this week

Thanks for the comment. That's our long-term plan, but we would try to rely on electricity for heat. That amount of propane is a huge monthly expense. Good luck out there, and if you find yourself 4 hours East, let us know. Thanks again, JF

great video. I have to agree with the idea that if you're bringing something as big as a small house, then why are you doing what you're doing anyway (I realize people can enjoy this, but sounds like a lot a headaches). And then you need the diesel dually more than likely. I really like the truck camper, and the pop-up in particular for the reasons mentioned . I recently bought a 2023 F350 with a gas engine so has great payload and one of thesej would work well.

Thanks for the comment. I just traded my dually in for a Nissan Titan XD. Now, to get the brackets for the camper put on is challenging because they don't make them. This little pop up camper does not weigh that much and the 1 ton was an overkill, plus the comfort and affordability driving to Texas and back 3 to 4 times a year is a lot better now. Thanks for the review, we now have an identical model !! I was wondering about how your steps were mounted. I’ve ordered a set of the TorkLift steps and noticed there’s little room below the door. Did you or the dealer use lag bolts screwed directly through the black weather stripping into the poly plastic sub flooring ???

Thanks for the comment. The steps are pinned to a bracket bolted on right right below the door. Great video! Bought a 1251 about a year ago. Works great for me and my wife. We wanted something that we could pull bass boat or trailer with Polaris and be able to explore outdoors. Of course we are a lot like you in that we spend most of our time enjoying the outdoors instead of sitting around indoors. Question, I’ve always removed the tailgate but I guess it’s not necessary? I have a 2020 Ford super duty with a 6’10 bed

Thanks for the comment. They told me to remove the tailgate when I got fitted, but noticed the camper does not hang down and it had braces near the back that were not sitting on anything. Also it seemed a little bouncy. After putting the tailgate back on, it gave a place where the last brace can sit and made it more stable on the truck, so now I leave it on. I think the 6'4" bed, like I have, is too short and needs the tailgate on. Glad yours is working out. Come to Colorado this summer and will never have to run the AC. Good luck, JF

Same thing. My RAM 2500, the tailgate is a PITA to remove/put on so I just leave it on. People say that it will get rock chips and such but so far its been perfect. @@meandherafterkids

This truck camper is on my sights, but my current truck can’t handle the load it’s a 21 PowerWagon, I would like to opt for a Megacab like yours brother & your palomino, I’m from South Texas I might would like to go to Princess Craft there @ Round Rock, see what I can use to buy one these bad boys… PS Colorado is amazing!!!

Thanks for the comment. That's where we got ours from last year. Drove from North of Dallas. They have different models and if I'm not mistaken, I think this Palomino will fit on a 1/2 ton. It doesn't weigh much at all. If not then I know for sure they have some that will. TBH, my truck is a little big for it and it would fit better on a 3/4 single Axle. They had to modify it to fit the dulley. Good luck and send pics when you pull the trigger. Thanks again.

Read the comments in the problems you all are having with your Palomino truck campers I haven't had any problems yet but it's a 2022 I bought it in 2023 and I've had it for 9 months and so far I haven't had a problem one everything is just working great fantastic

I loved my 1251 for the 1st yr. Then it started going downhill. My roof has failed. Already needs to be reskinned. It's a covid build 2020.5 build and SO many issues have popped up. The plywood roof has pulled from the glue that holds it to the hard foam underlayment. Dealer wouldn't cover it. The electric actuators failed. Literally after 2 trips. NO rain... Then when I got home I washed it at the drive thru self service car wash. That alone caused water intrusion and they rusted and failed. You'll get new actuators in no time TRUST ME. If you don't join the palomino FB forum. literally everyone has to change them out either during warrenty or during and after warranty. ... I've been quoted 6k for labor to redo the roof thats had 7 one day trips and is stored under shade. The roof's rubber skin is garbage. Be warned.

Thanks for the heads up. I have read the horror stories and they all seem to say the same thing. We have had ours for a year now and used it 20 times or so. All I can do now is try my best to prevent some of those issues. It is tarped at the moment, and we will see how she wintered this April. "Fingers crossed" Thanks for the comment.

The actuator issue is a very common one. In 2023 the actuators went back to Reico Titans and apparently isn't an issue. A $35 worm gear can be replaced instead of the complete actuator assembly if they ever do fail. Pre 2023 actuators are often replaced with the progressive brand actuators that solved the issue and the complete set was around $500 shipped to your door.

I went with the progressive upgrade.. One thing I've learned also, ALWAYS park your camper level before raising the roof. The roof will tilt while going up and will test those actuators. ...@@c0ck_l2oach75

Okay you're talking about letting the roof down and tucking it in if you turn your fans on high and close the door it will suck the sides in and you can let the roof down

I have seen this, and I know it works. We just have so much stuff to load that we can not get to the fan over the bed when the roof is down. And we have tried loading after it's down, but being 6'3", it's too much of a pain to do without hitting my head.

Mine has been a piece of crap but I paid for it. I’m gonna fix it up. Also got to make it sleep for me and my wife and two kids teenage kids some work we gotta do this winter but I’m a lot like you we spend all our time outside the camper is just a place to sleep.

I leave my little Pantry hanging when I move I just take everything out of it and just let it collapse down cuz they're not easy to hook up and unhook

Thanks for the comment. I have done this before and it works when the camper is empty. Our issue is, we pack the camper first because of the space and head room so when we close it up there is no way to get back to the fan with the bicycles, generator steps and all that in the way. The little fan at the door is not strong enough to suck it in so you have to use the one over the bed.

Thanks for the comment. For used, I would really go over the canvas and zippers really good to make sure it has never been tore or ripped. Also, the electric Jack's for the pop-up. If they go out, you are screwed. I am thinking of buying an extra one for that "just in case" moment. Good luck, you will love it.

Have you had problems with the roof lift actuators? Apparently there has been an issue since they moved them outside. I have heard some scary stories on tops not being able to be brought down.

Thanks for the comment. I read the same horror stories after I bought the camper and now I am worried this will happen. I don't know how to prevent it to be honest. From what others are saying, it is due to water getting in. So I guess if it is stored under cover then this will never be an issue. I personally have not had any issues "yet" (knock on wood) and I just tarped and winterized the camper last weekend. I am hopping that will keep the moisture out. Thanks again.

I owned the 1200 which had the shower never regretted having it for tons of storage and most of all im a fall winter camper in northern Arizona so having a hot shower at least once or twice a week was great in winter i used a Mr Buddy propane heater connected to a 20pnd tank kept me super toasty. I kick my butt for trading the palomino in for a aliner trailer i could just cry lose my mind for making such a stupid mistake it was paid off it was a 2021 but gas mpg were 9 miles per gallon and with this asshole in office everything continues to rise cost wise. Anyway enjoy your palomino greatly.

Thanks for the comment. We absolutely love our purchase and use the crap out of it. I ordered it with the water heater and outdoor shower, waited the 6 months for it to be built and when we picked it up, they left this off. It was almost a deal breaker and they would have made it right, but I did not want to drive the 8 hours and sit all day again to get it put on. Either way, we are happy. We plan to use this little camper up. It would be nice to have some trade in value, but......I would rather use it till it falls apart. Hope you find another one and thanks again.

@@meandherafterkids hi i bought it brand new $17,000 cash that was in the days b4 the rv explosion now dealers really over charge for rv's oh well at least i own the aliner out right i plan on heading up to Happy Jack Northern Arizona next week ,, wish you the very best with your palomino !

Have you run into issues with the actuators that lift the roof? I've been hearing about water getting in and rusting them out causing people a lot of problems.

Thanks for the question. "Knock on wood" no problems yet. I have read and heard the same thing over and over. I think if you have the capability to store the camper under an awning, garage or tarp this would not be much of an issue. I also think if it sits, without be used, for a extended time might also contribute to this issue. Like mine now sits under a tarp and has been since last October. I am crossing my fingers that everything is good in two weeks when we bring it out of hibernation. Thanks again, JF

I guess you could if you wanted. I feel that would hurt the resell value when it's time to upgrade. Even though they are small and hardly used, they still serve a purpose when you are stuck inside due to the weather.

Does the soft side make noise blowing in the wind like a tent, been looking at this model due to it being light weight but scared I won’t be able to sleep with the fabric moving with the wind a lot?

Thanks for the comment. Even though the material is way thicker than a tent, when it's blowing really had outside it dose pop some. What I do is lay something along the side like a backpack or extra blanket and it stops all that. Good luck and I hope this helps.

@@meandherafterkids thank you for the tip, I had a Travel Trailer and like the idea of worrying less. Had a roof top tent that thing blew in the wind like a sail boat same thing tent camping. Makes sense to reduce the fabric ability to be free to make noise.

@@Trufit99 As much as we have camped in this little popup ruck camper, maybe once it was really bad and that's when I found out putting something against the side helped. Also, I didn't mention if you have everything zipped up and turn on the exhaust fan, it sucks the canvas in and it does not move much at all in the wind. Little things like this I learned from just doing it. I personally would not have anything else at this time in out travels. Plus seeing some of these smaller campgrounds and disperse camping areas here in Colorado, there is no way I would pull a camper to some of these. Please keep me updated on what yall decided on.

@@meandherafterkids thank you for the pro tips. Definitely agree as the market increases on rv buyers unfortunately campgrounds are increasing spaces not but increasing acreage. Some campgrounds feel like parking lots with hookups :(

it seems the shower area and sink/stove area are a waste of space and cash, why pay for what you don't use.

That is why I didn't get the shower and just got the toilet. The shower would have eliminated a lot of space and storage. The sink and stove area is only used when we need it. If it is really cold, windy or raining we use these. They are just a little small. Plus, they are standard when you order it. Just like the AC unit. When ordering in Texas it is an automatic and the only choice you have is to upgrade to a bigger unit if you want.
