Thank you Zach! We love our horses and our mules! The mules indeed act like puppy dogs, wanting their brushing and scratching every time we are near.

I really like the way you talk about your mules, your love and respect for them is apparent. I am also amazed how much your mules can pull, after all they are not that heavy. I am used to having horses that weigh more than 2000 pounds. With the ever increasing average summer temperatures ( right now we are 8 degrees above normal here in NW Missouri) I fully understand why you prefer mules, and your feeding points are convincing.

Thank you sir for all the kind words. I truly appreciate it. Mules are all too often misunderstood. So, I wanted to take time and just do a little explaining on them. Looks like you got some fine help there. My dad always said you could feed a mule on what a horse wasted on the ground. He said, mules are smarter tan horses, that if a mule got caught in barbed wire it would stand there and wait until you found it and a horse would fight it until the tore the legs all to pieces. I don't know I reckon I just always liked them old long eared devils for some reason.

Also, horses are lofty in spirit, and donkeys are sweethearts -- generally speaking. I have no experience with mules other than some parade mules, so I can't speak on them. But, watching your videos, it seems that your mules are sweethearts too.

I had a bad mule when I was a kid. The bars of his mouth were nothing but scar tissue where he'd had a bicycle chain bit in his mouth, and I don't know if the bit had made him bad, or if he'd had the bit because he was already bad. You couldn't turn him or stop him. He had thrush really bad, and trying to get that cleared up was an exercise in good reflexes. He wanted to kick every time I picked up his foot. I never did get to work him. I rode him a few times, and that was an adventure. I ended up trading him off, and I believe he went to South America to be a pack mule on a coffee plantation. There was a buyer in the area when I traded him, and I was told that was where he went. I never wanted another one. He ruined me. Your mules are giving me a different opinion of them. Yours work really nicely. Now I have broken a team of miniature donkeys, and they were very precise and gentle. They did hate dogs, however, and I had a runaway with one of them when she saw a dog and took out after it, cart and all. Small as they were, I did work them some. I built a little sledge for them, and we used them to haul manure and haul firewood.

I am not sure what is going on with my comment… I tried to respond earlier and somehow it is showing it did not go through. Anyway, I will try again… I am sorry to hear about your John Mule too many times rank mules have spoiled people, you can get good ones and bad ones and either male or female. But John mules generally require a stiff hand to get them broke. I am glad to hear about your donkeys though! I love donkeys so much. Thank you for always taking time to watch and also comment. It means a lot to me. I really appreciate it! Take care of my friend, and do come again please.

Great informative video Zach. Honestly, I know very little about pulling logs with animals, I have always used machinery, my grandfathers did however use animals and here in Australia they preferred to use Bullock teams, the reason for this was a lot of the reasons you have outlined and why you prefer your mules over draft horses. The biggest reason they often told me was that the bullock teams were better in a low speed heavy pull, as they seem to find a lower gear in other words then the draft horses ever could, but if they were pulling wagons at high speed they preferred the draft horses for this application. I also think that the bullocks were cheaper to buy and they were easier to feed and maintain. Anyway keep up the good work.
@zachodom7486
@zachodom7486 Месяц назад
Yessir you bet! I’ve talked to several oxen drivers here in the U.S. and they share those same sentiments as well. Low geared and low end torque. Only thing with regular oxen is, they get hot! And down south where I am, oxen weren’t near as popular as mules were I think mainly because of that. But anyway, that’s a cool topic you brought up and thank you. I’m always glad to hear about how other people in other places do things. Thx for sharing! And thx for taking time to watch and comment. I truly appreciate it!! My dad told me that when he was growing up in the depression that his family cut timber. They had mules and horse teams. He said that the mules were easier to work with. They showed the mules their route 1 time maybe 2 and they would snake the logs out themselves. Just had to have 1 person to hook up and 1 at the landing. Now with the horse teams someone would have to travel with them.
@zachodom7486
@zachodom7486 Месяц назад
I have had both horses and mules alike that would both go to and from on their own. But I will say mules catch on a little quicker to it. After having had both… I just generally prefer mules! I like the way they bond with a person, and also they’re easier keepers. Thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment! Take care and do come again, please

The first time I smacked a fly on her I was shocked that I didn’t consider what she may think of that but she just knew and did not resent my efforts. When I say that, that means for them to “stand up” in the harness. Tighten up a little. Not walk off forward. But just stand up where they are. Don’t come back anymore at all. I also say “straighten up.” That means just what it says. If one is flaring out a little or something such as when hooking or turning…I’ll tell em to straighten up. Or stand up. Sometimes I’ll call one mule particularly and give them an independent command such as these if one is a little out of kilter. Hope this answers your question and thank you!
