What do geologists do? Why study geology? What do you learn with a geology degree? This video will answer all of these questions for you!
Have you met a geologist and wondered how they got into that career path, or what their degree program was like in college? In this video I talk about my experience going to college for geology and the main reasons why I'm super happy I made that choice. Some topics I cover in this video are geology field work, how to become a geologist, some examples of careers in geology, and why I think getting a geology degree is worth it 1000000000%!
Thanks for watching and if you liked it, feel free to like, comment and subscribe to see my future videos! :)

Becky, I have news for you, if you are a curious person, you never lose it. I am 74 and have always been curious. I may not have been the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I out curioused most of my peers. I wanted to know everything about everything. I wanted to know exactly what you are talking about. Why is this rock like this, and another one is like that? How old are these mountains, and when were their rocks formed? Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.! You are special too. I can see it. I was a college professor for 7 years and a HS teacher for 25. When I was young, even answering the phone scared the crap out of me. I never liked talking in class. I sat in the back. Well, through personal will, I made myself get over it. A big part of it was when I became involved in photography. I knew that I knew more than anyone I would talk to. That gave me confidence. A lot of confidence. You have nothing to be selfconscious about. You know your stuff and can present it so people like me understand it. Set your goals high and go for them. I think you have a lot to contribute and the sky is the limit! PS. A lot of being a great teacher is sharing your love, which will be infectious, and being excited when your students discover things and achieve things. Give em love. Most people do not get nearly enough and do not get recognition. A little goes a long way. One award in HS can start someone on a lifelong career.

I've been pleased with geology as a career path. BS, PD, and PhD, all in Geological Engineering, PG(NY). Started as an O&G geologist, now working as a hydrogeologist specializing in groundwater modeling. When I was in school taking deff-e-q, I thought it was B.S. that it was required. "Geologist don't need this!!" Of course now, groundwater modeling is ALL differential equations.

Couple of books I can recommend for all you geology nerds out there - "In Suspect Terrain" (1983) and "Basin and Range" (1981), both by John McPhee. I have read these numerous times - still fascinating, and gives a great overview of US geology from the perspective of a non-geologist. And yes, I consider myself a proud member of the Geologist Nerd Club.

Beautiful, honest, earnest. With degrees in very different fields I study geology because when NASA knocked an asteroid off course some time ago it blew my mind. The space program was much maligned when JFK started it. “The money should feed the starving,” people wailed. We’ve learned we could do both. We now know, absolutely know another dinosaur killing asteroid or comet could/will take a run at us again. So “space” is now our own, immediate planetary space with explicit Planetary Defense at NASA and internationally. What we know from the Space Program will save earth one day. Similarly, listening to geologists, I understand they currently cringe at the suggestion they could predict earthquakes and eruptions. Okay. For now. But I remember when knocking an asteroid off its track was science fiction. Superman could do it but not us. In the same way geologists today may insist all they want “We do not predict!” but all they are learning now will coalesce one day to prediction or something like prediction. The last big earthquake in southwestern Turkey where three continental plates meet took 55,000 lives. I refuse to believe that humanity is forever doomed to stand by and do nothing while Gaia hiccups. Geologists will get us there, even if they now think it impossible. Then they’ll see: they are like Wonder Women and Supermen for humanity. That’s why I love geology.

since I was young, I really wanted to be a civil engineer. but as I grow older, I started to find math very hard. But right now, it seems that the only math I have difficulties with is in chemistry and I don't really find physics or calculus that hard as long as I understand the formula. I really loved science since then and would mostly ace it back then. I am stuck between choosing radiology and geology but it is almost time to finally say goodbye to high school life and welcome myself to college. The reason I was stuck between these two because both have the same reason why I want to pursue them which is to satisfy my curiosity. But I've been thinking about lately that I find looking for rocks especially those very interesting looking ones is much more fun than going through textbooks about medical shiz. My father asked me why I wanted to pursue it and then asked me if I can get a lot of money. I didn't signed up for this just for the money, I chose this to satisfy my curiosities. I know he's being practical because of what he gone through. But that's not the reason I chose this field. As I found more interest in Geology, I started to go with my parents to beaches, and places I've never been through just so I can find interesting rocks. I thank my teacher in earth science last year, and is now our teacher in chemistry and biology, for giving us that performance task that asks you to find 1 igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. It really piqued my interest. The school might be 3 cities away, and I hope my parents would let me go there. The same school also has a branch in the city where I live in but it doesn't have Geology and their main school is far but is the only one near us that offers BS Geology. I also hope that they would appreciate why I chose this. They had expectations but I also don't want them to control what I will get in college because of practicality.

The reasons you said are the same that made me think of studying geology but I love phylosophy too and I don't know if humanistic subjects would passionate me more, or I don't know if studying geology my phylosophycal/psychological interests will be too much oppressed.
@Geobeck

Don't feel too much pressure right now to know which choice is the 'right' choice. Everyone is different! I would suggest taking a couple intro classes in each subject and see which one you gravitate more towards. It's also entirely possible you'll discover something completely different that you'll end up liking more once you get to university. Obviously I am biased when I say I think everyone should study geology, but for everyone what they love and are interested in varies so much. Especially with geology which is such an overarching topic that can branch out into many industries! Have you thought about looking into anthropology or archaeology? Those have more of a human behavior/culture/history element while also incorporating things like soil science, geophysics, geography, etc.

@Geobeck
@Geobeck 3 года назад
Hi Claire! Congrats on being a college freshman! I know things are very strange right now, and I give a lot of credit to all the people starting their first year in college during a pandemic - I'm sure that doesn't come without unique challenges to face. First, I just want to say don't feel too pressured right now to make a decision. Being a freshman, especially in a crazy time like this, you shouldn't feel like you have it all together and know exactly what you want. I didn't know I wanted to study geology until my sophomore year and I still got to do everything I needed/wanted to do at school! It's extremely common to be torn between a couple different things that interest you, so don't put too much pressure on yourself. I think you should take a few classes in each topic and just see which ones excite you and interested you the most! Environmental science and geology programs are similar in many ways, and I don't know too too much about the environmental science major, but I think both are great options depending on your interests! Sorry for such a vague answer, I just think the best way is to keep doing research - watching videos like this one from people who study/studied environmental science is also a great idea. Also, look for some videos from people who currently have careers in environmental science and also in geology and see which ones stand out to you the most/feel like something you could see yourself doing. Good luck to you and thank you for watching my video!

Mineralogy and Geomorphology are required core courses for other geology courses.
@Geobeck
@Geobeck 3 года назад
so sorry, just seeing this comment! I'm assuming you've already made your decision, but i'll do my best to give you my thoughts! I don't know which school you're at or other aspects of your situation - so i'm not sure if you're doing any of these classes/labs in person given the current situation. But I would recommend maybe holding off on geophysics right now if you can't do it in person. For me, when I took geophysics it was a lot of field work and that really helped us understand the instruments and how to use them. So if you're able to take 12 credits right now instead of 15, i'd say go for it. Especially because if you have a lot of online classes right now, it may be more difficult to get all the work done for each class since the professors and students are all trying to figure out how to do online classes recently and it could be more challenging! It's all about what feels right to you, so either way I hope it works out for you and you still get the most out of your university/geology degree experience!

Hello Ms Geo Beck, I'd add an eleventh point, if you have room... 11) Why should you study geology? The rocks tell stories, if you know how to read them. From an SEM image of weirdly textured PGM metals, to a thin section of some heavily altered igneous rock, to a nice stack of fossiliferous Paleozoic sediments, to slickensides and gouge along a fault zone, to a mountainside exposure showing extreme folding - there is a story that needs only a set of eyeballs and an informed mind to read and understand. This to me is the real beauty of this science. "Geology is a capital science to begin, as it requires nothing but a little reading, thinking & hammering." (Darwin, 1835). As my beloved Professor Woody screamed at one of us back in the late 1970s - "Look at the rocks, godammit!!!". And, I'm still looking... You will do well in your career, Ms Geo Beck.

I'm studying geology at university but I'm thinking of dropping out. I feel like I'm not smart enough. I've really been struggling with Math lately. Additionally, all my classes are online because all schools are closed here (Czechia) and have been for the past year and I'm studying rocks without being able to physically study them, all we have is pictures and no outdoor trips are happening either, everything is forbidden. Even if I overcome my struggles with difficult classes and somehow manage to get a degree in geology, as a geologist I'll be worthless. What do you think? Should I continue or find a different path for myself? Everything you mentioned that you love about studying geology is what I'm missing. I'm not going on outdoor trips, I'm don't even know my fellow geology nerds, I'm not learning new skills etc. I feel like I'm missing out on everything that makes geology awesome

@Geobeck 3 года назад
Hi Luna!! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. First, I just want to say I'm sorry that you've been struggling lately :( college is no easy thing and as interesting and cool geology is, it's also just a pretty tough thing to study - and I got my degree while NOT in a pandemic, so good for you for sticking it out so far this year through everything that's been happening. I can't imagine how tough it must be to try to learn geology without all the field experience that I was so lucky to have when getting my degree. That is a huge part of learning geology and unfortunately it just hasn't been realistic for most students/schools this past year :/ That being said, I have also (and still do) struggled with self doubt and not feeling like I was smart enough, worked hard enough, etc. etc. etc. - imposter syndrome is a very real thing, I've found especially for women in STEM. It's rough - but I don't think you should let that determine if you continue this degree or not. I don't think you are doing yourself any favors by assuming you will be 'worthless' as a geologist either. If you just don't feel passionate about geology enough to continue or to pursue a career in it, that's a different story - but don't stop studying it because you don't think you are good enough. I have continuously proven my self wrong over and over and over again when it comes to doing things - and doing them better - that I never pictured myself 'good enough' to do, especially with my math requirements for my degree. I talked about this a bit in the video but math was a big struggle for me too. I took it one step at a time and kept reminding myself to ask for help from the professor/TAs/tutoring if I needed it. I also made friends with people in my math classes and we studied together and co-miserated when we felt frustrated and clueless lol. When I took Calc II I did ok the whole semester, but completely failed the final exam. I was lucky enough to pass the class but it was really tough for me, and a lot of my friends struggled in their math classes too, so that's definitely a common thing in STEM/earth sciences. I think there was another comment on this video about someone struggling with math as well so I suggest taking a look at my response to them as well! :) What I do think you should focus on is whether its effecting your mental health enough to the point where you cannot focus on yourself/your wellbeing. I of course love geology and loved getting my degree but by no means do I think anything is worth sacrificing your mental health, and just because I loved it doesn't mean everyone else can love it too. You can always explore options like taking a break and continuing when you feel like you're in a better place, or continue when things get better with the pandemic and you are able to have more of an immersive experience with your degree. And also, sometimes we start doing something and find out later on that we just don't like it. That's completely normal! Don't feel like you need to have allll the answers, I sure don't and I don't think anyone else on the planet does either (even if they tell you they do lol). I also cannot tell you what you should or shouldn't do, as only you truly know what's best for you, and no matter how well someone else might know you personally, or has a similar experience, they ultimately cannot possibly know what *you* should do. Something that may help you is to connect with other people that are in the same or similar situation as you. I've seen many other people online sharing their lives in STEM as students/researchers/professionals and I think it can really help to become part of a community where you can learn from others. :) I hoped this helped a little bit and good luck in whatever you decide to do. ❤

I suggest not dropping. Keep going and finish. I hate online classes, especially this kind of classes.

@@Geobeck hello, I'm sorry, I didn't know how to answer back then, I was filled with doubt and depression took over me and I nearly quit. Somehow I managed to hold on with some professional help from my uni, and I'm still in school. My major is actually a mix of geology and geography and I like the geography part way better so I decided to just suck it up, get my degree, and then pursue one of the sciences I enjoy in my later studies. But pandemic really ruined geology for me and it made it even harder to find friends, so I ended up being alone. And I don't really want to share my STEM experience online, because it's embarrassing and only discouraging, so I doubt that would make me feel better. But thank you for your words, your advice did help me

What if someone isn’t good at math? Because I’ve seen a lot of physics and calculus requirements 😭
@Geobeck

personally, I thought I was terrible at math until I took classes in college! In high school I really hated it, and when I had to register for the calc 1 class I was so nervous so I did precalc before it - some people start out freshman or sophomore year with something before precalc as well! And most universities have pretty good tutoring programs as well as office hours run by the professors or the TA's. I also was lucky and got some pretty great professors for my college math classes. And as far as physics - it's different for everyone and each college, but I took the basic college level physics classes (PHY 1 and 2) that were required for my school's geology requirements and they were pretty much the equivalent (or a little easier in my opinion) than the one physics class I took in HS! I'd say I wouldn't let those requirements scare you into not at least trying. And don't be afraid of failing a class or two in college. It's not ideal, but it's a lot more common than you'd think to need more than one try to pass a class, especially ones as advanced as Calculus. If you are interested in geology don't let that stop you! The physics and Calc in the geology classes themselves are not as advanced as taking a full-on calc or physics class, in my opinion. I think the calc and physics classes on their own really helped me in my geology core classes with the math and physics aspects BECAUSE the individual calc/physics classes were more detailed/in depth. I think that's why you are required to take those classes. I would also say it depends on what type of geology you're into - if you want to go further and get a masters or phd in something like structural geology, hydrogeology, or geophysics - then yes, physics and math classes are very important to master. I think if you're interested in learning something, a little hard work and persistence can be worth it to get through the tough parts! Good luck in whatever you decide :)

some colleges offer a BA (bachelor in arts) in geology that doesnt require as much math as getting a regular BS (bachelor in science) in geology...
