Sales guy at the RV dealer said should place a generator 25 feet away from an RV due to the danger of exhaust getting in the RV. It seems like he is overly concerned about it seen many travel trailers setup that way. Could always put a CO alarm inside they don't cost all that much.

Well you are far the most accurate - every video I’ve seen fail to mention that yes the AC will turn on but when the compressor turns on even this generator will fail and go into overload - a lot of false information given to consumer - I bought one and it does not run my Dometic 15000 BTU Brisk 2. Champion fails to mention this - the 30 amp plug fails at 29.4 amps - the ac must want more when compressor kicks in.

aron sal absolutely. And I'm assuming that it probably be worse if you are at a higher altitude as the engine is operating at less efficiency. Also running on propane the thing only puts out 3060 Watts. If I had to do it over again instead of putting a hard start capacitor on I would go with the micro Air Soft start. The generator will easily start and run the air conditioner at that point with very minimal kick on draw

Awesome video! You got me thinking about those times you will need to boondock. FYI. Champion is coming out with new 2000W generators. One is gas only and the other is dual fuel with a new digital LED Display. They are stackable and parallel capable.

I am curious how this will work out. I am curious about noise inside and maybe vibrations when the generator is running. We have been looking for a generator for our trailer too.
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 6 лет назад
Arbitrary Exploration the very first day that I mounted the generator on the travel trailer I shot a little bit of video inside with the generator running. It was definitely quieter than when I had it mounted on the back. Once I have everything positioned the way I want I will do a sound comparison and maybe I can do some sort of liquid in a glass to show you vibration possibly. That'll be on down the road so keep an eye out.
@ArbitraryExploration
@ArbitraryExploration 6 лет назад
That is really cool! The vibrations are only if they are noticeable enough to be a problem. I am pretty tolerant of vibrations just. Thank you for putting this together. We have been looking at the champions that you can parallel.

I’m still looking for the best way to tote the generator with the 5th wheel. I like your current setup with the exhaust extension running out of the bed for overnight stays. Our camper didn’t come with a hitch receiver on back so adding an exhaust extension would be a lot less work than adding a hitch receiver. Lol.

I have had a champion mounted at the tailgate of the pickup for years now.. no issues.. but I don't have carpet lined in my bed.. the vibration and noise of the generator just didn't make sense in mounting "on" the trailer.. we all make choices.. safe travels.

I've read 3% reduction in power output per 1000 feet elevation? Probably heard that on the Wagner's video. I've got my Easy Start being delivered TODAY. Picking up my RPod TOMORROW. My 2200W Westinghouse generator should be fine... most of the places I'll be won't be too high elevation.

I understand why you mounted it on the tongue, but I think still you are going to get sonic vibration not so much dynamic vibrations which will drone you to death.. but you said it doesn't bother you so all is good. Too bad you couldn't leave the tailgate open and run the generator.. Will get cooling air and be a bit quieter.You can create a fence and lock your goods and generator inside and run with the tailgate open. Less hassle in the long run I would think..

The Honda eu3000i Handi weighs 75 pounds and is 2/3 the size of the eu3000is. Slightly less power and $300 more, but well worth it on the weight savings. The Honda eu2000i is 13.3 amps.

Is it safe to have your generator so close to your propane tanks? I would be concerned about heat from the generator. If the generator has a internal component failure, can the propane tanks be punctured? It may be remote but it is still a considered. Love the setup you have with the generator and hope it works well for you.
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 6 лет назад
John Simone all the heat that the generator creates exits out of the exhaust pipe and that engine vent on one side of the generator. The control panel doesn't even come close to getting hot. And the other side is the air intake side. I have never as a small engine mechanic had an engine fail and throw parts. Even when engines have seized and blown up, which we've done on purpose before, there may be some small aluminum pieces that will fall off the block but no explosions of any kind, and definitely nothing with enough strength to puncture a propane tank.

A lot of good info here. You are doing things for your trailer set up that I have started to do on mine. I believe in learning from others experiences when I can. I don't want to do things twice or make the trailer handle unsafely. Thanks for sharing. I subbed also.

Been debating on making some videos on Rv living. I just removed the generator and propane out of my itasca. The one we removed was a kohler 3500 that was 50 years old and replaced it with a raven 5500. The only reason I put something so big in is because the raven generator I got was new and I got it for free.

Great video. Great thoughts. Love the easy start. Some may not uncounted these issues as higher elevation usually includes lower temps, so not too concerned with overload . Still though, great points. Will keep these in mind as I continue to progress toward full time RVing.

My friend I like your videos ,I have a question my RV is a 50 amps I buy the champion generator 76533 this one only have connection for 30 amps cable, how can I fix this situation and running the 50 amps I need when going to boondocking. Thanks and be safe always
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 6 лет назад
carjack69 you have to get a 50amp female to 30amp male adapter/dogbone.... HOWEVER, you will be limited on how much you can run inside your RV. If you have dual air conditioners you will not be able to run both of them. If they are 15000 BTU air conditioners you should be able to run one of them without issue. If you have a 13500 BTU air conditioner you will be able to run that and maybe your refrigerator on electric too. You will not be able to run your air conditioning and microwave at the same time or your air conditioning and electric hot water tank at the same time or your microwave or electric hot water tank at the same time. Basically, you have three major appliances on your RV that draw a lot of amperage. One is the the air conditioning unit the second is the microwave and the third is your electric hot water tank. You can only run one of those at a time while connected to the generator. You will not be able to run your air conditioner with any other heavy draw Appliance such as a hair dryer, a toaster or toaster oven, or one of those little electric space heaters. All those things draw too much amperage when trying to run two of them together at the same time. That's what everybody else does with 50 amp RVs too. You just can run minimal appliances at the same time as the air conditioning unit. Or like I mentioned the other two big draw items. It's not a big deal unless you have to run your air conditioning constantly to stay cool, even then you can turn it off for a short bit and run the microwave or whatever else you may need and then afterwards you can fire back up the air-conditioning. It's definitely a learning curve but overall it's the easiest way to handle it. Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for watching

Have to comment , at 600 feet above sea level- I have a Firman dual fuel 3200 from Costco - I installed two micro air switches in each of my 15000 roof units, the gen runs both plus the 50” LED TV and stereo with sound bar and 8 speakers no problem using propane that rates the gen at 2600 watts - no problems here ;)

RVdaydream I appreciate the response. Just came across your channel last night and subscribed. Check us out. Not as informational as your channel though. How where you able to purchase such a big expensive truck and keep it debt free. I like many keep a very low debt ceiling. We’ve paid so much off but I’m pull 10,000 lbs dry on a 3.92 axle ratio 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L SLT that we were blessed to pay cash for. But now when I think about upgrading to something that will allow me to travel in the road pull such amount of weight without my back axle dipping inward or being able to travel no more than 70 mph, trucks are just out of control expensive. What’s your advice? In your mind what is worth it a dodge or ford?
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 4 года назад
I'm a Ford guy. Doesn't mean there's not a lot of dodges out there that do just fine. If you're going to stick with a gas engine you're going to need a older Dodge with a V10 in it. They can be found relatively cheap. But if you're going to stick with Dodge most people go diesel because of those Cummins engines. I'm not a big fan of diesel but at 10,000 pounds I would be thinking about it. If you want to run a Ford gas engine you need to find either a V10 or a good old 460. Again at 10,000 pounds if you're buying used you might want to be into a 7.3 powerstroke diesel. We've been able to stay debt-free because of Investments that we made years ago.

Certainly is a lot of food for thought. I think my plan is going to be partitioning my truck bed according to the sections in my tenau cover. It's a semi rigid trifold affaire that I can lock down. If I stop overnight some place just pop the first section open and hook up the power. I can make a solid partition to secure the rest of the gear (lawn furniture, extra...well everything) I like your idea of having a dedicated power cord hard wired but obviously that wouldn't work well if the generator is bolted down to the bed. I gave a bedrug also so I guess that'll have to go. It came with the truck and honestly, it's more work just trying to keep it from getting nasty than it would be to just have a good heavy duty bed liner. I've seen generator racks that mount over the batteries and propane bottles, I just gave a problem with something that generates that much isolated heat over the batteries and propane tanks and just inches from my head sleeping. As always, well done.
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 6 лет назад
Neil Cotter I agree. If I didn't have a cap I would definitely do something in the bed of the truck. I am going to do a video in the future though covering the actual temperatures that the generator produces and how it affects the items that are around it. You might be surprised about how cool the temperatures actually are. I know I was.

You mentioned that you plan on moving the batteries inside your trailer. That will be fine if you use Lithium Ion or AGM batteries but regular lead-acid batteries need to be vented to the outside because they release toxic hydrochloric acid fumes. I use AGMs for this reason. Besides not releasing toxic gases AGM batteries don't require any maintenance.
@jessebalk
@jessebalk 6 лет назад
Ooops. New guy here. I just heard in your May 30th. post that you are indeed using AGM batteries.
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 6 лет назад
jessebalk yeah there's a few videos back that I mention that I think. However, you will be surprised to here that AGM batteries are too supposed to vented. In the case of a slight overcharge situation, which is highly unlikely, there is a 2 to 4 PSI valve that will release if that situation occurs. But, I'm not going to. I'll discuss this in a future video. Thanks for the comment!

Not Hydrochloric acid, they use sulphuric acid. Definately right about the fumes and they also produce hydrogen gas which of course is explosive

RVdaydream - i had watched the video of the Sherline scale before, but this time paid very close attention. At around 20 or 21 minutes, it became very obvious the concern about having too much weight behind the trailer axle(s). I will probably get the same scale from your amazon link and do basically the same testing you did. Our trailer is 18.5 ft long from tongue to rear bumper. 2/3 of the trailer is infront of the axle and 1/3 behind. My original plan was put the 60 lb cargo tray on the back with the same champion gen set alobg with one 20 lb LP bottle. Total weight ~ 200 lbs. I. In the front of our trailer was going to add two group 31 batterries weighing together 150 lbs. Based on the 2/3 to 1/3 ratio, i thought that would equalize the load front and back. I guess i will see if that is the case or not after using the scale methods you showed. Thanks again for all the insight. We have only had our small travel trailer 1 years so still newbies :)

Look up stromberg generator mount
@Rvdaydream
@Rvdaydream 6 лет назад
Jerel Rogers Stromberg trailer tray is entirely too tall. Everyone knows, that when you are Towing the lower the center of gravity that better. I do not want to add a hundred and ten pound generator above my propane tanks. Also who's is going to be lifting it up there? It might be okay for those little Honda generators but this is heavier for sure. I've seen the stromberg-carlson trailer tray up close and personal at a campground last year. And although it is built very well and seems very sturdy it will not work for my application. As I mentioned in the past videos, I have a road cover that is over top of my front window that would not be able to open with the generator mounted.
@jerelrogers5739
@jerelrogers5739 6 лет назад
RVdaydream I use the Stromberg and it is fantastic. I have secured it well and with my Champion remote start it runs right where it sets. The oil change can be conducted right there. The biggest drawback is fueling but I normally fill it at the station and have a small stepladder to fuel it as well as other maintenance.
