We’d watch Stand And Deliver for math class, end of the year was Freedom Writers, and for some reason in Spanish class we watched this movie called Voces Inocentes and it’s depressing asf
I really wish the footage of him on "American Bandstand" hadn't been destroyed. Unfortunately the networks back then didn't see the value in saving old footage for posterity.
@@robertluengas513 There's so much that was lost. There is a clip of Richie singing a mimed performance of "Ooh My Head" in a Chuck Berry movie though. It's the only performance footage of him that still exists.
It's ironic because Bob is introduced as and plays the hero for the first part of La Bamba. Bob uses his less than legal means to provide a home in the US for the family, which in turn gives Richie the opportunity to make it big with his music. I don't know much about the real Ritchie Valens, but the sibling rivalry angle made for a good movie. A whisky glass and a woman's ass, will make a fool out of any man.
The movie isnt 100% accurate but it does touch base on most things. I'm pretty sure the drama was there between the siblings rivalry few things to note on Ritchie is he never really always went everywhere with his guitar that was Hollywood. The scene where they meet the snake man and he gives the necklace to Ritchie almost like it was a curse when it broke and he died also Hollywood. The airport where the plane takes off wasn't in the state they took off but in Burbank airport in California which honestly isn't a big deal but it was for the family they literally decided to go even tho they were advised not to because it's the scene where Ritchie takes off keep in mind that during during the casting of La Bamba lots of people including fans of Ritchie Valens would say getting Lou Diamond Phillips wasn't the right choice but it was for the family. When he came in his presence and aura was a resemblance of their Ritchie for the family he was back in their lives and that's what mattered to them most so when he was doing the coin toss his real life sister grabbed him and was crying uncontrollably saying why did you have to go to Lou Diamond that must have been tough. Another thing I read is that when he did pass away Bob his producer helped out his family with the burial he used his own money basically the money he made off Ritchie to fly out his body back to the valley and buried at San Fernando mission. I also read somewhere that Led Zeppelin left a credit to Mrs Valens Ritchie's mom on Boogie with Stu because she got screwed out of royalties from the label so they wanted to help her as a thank you. unfortunately she ended up filing a lawsuit against Zeppelin for more money cus the song was practically a rip off of Ooh my Head but even then that song was also ripped off from a song by Little Richard anyways one of Ritchie's idols. Bob was really accurate and honestly in the Hispanic community we all have that one uncle who were drunks like that lol when Ritchie was on TV on American Bandstand he didn't play Donna he played c'mon let's go. I believe it's on RU-vid. When he died in the plane crash he wasn't sick either and the coin toss was against Tommy Ulsup not the other member of Buddy Holly's band. When Bob found artwork it wasn't Woody woodpecker but it was actually Disney characters at Walt Disney studios probably changed this due to copyright and legal stuff. His relationship with Donna while the movie made it seem so romantic and like it was meant to always be it was never really like that it was more realistic lol by the time he died they were practically officially broken up they weren't even talking like a couple anymore. Also something about Mexico him going to Tijuana I don't think it ever happened I can't say for sure I do think he did take him somewhere but it wasn't exactly how it was depicted in the film. Regardless the family loved the movie for the time they were shooting the movie they had their family back they had Ritchie back and for once Bob was the main character and had the spotlight in a unforgettable story of a chicano rock n roll pioneer I firmly believe he would have done some amazing collabs and songs had he lived much longer. His family is great really nice people I met Bobs biological son he came off strong at first but something about him just felt familiar and I guess maybe that's what it was cus he was his son and he wasn't the one to tell me it was his wife he doesn't like to tell people who he's related to cus then people start asking questions and I didn't wanna bombard him with questions I'm not that kind of starstruck guy. Cool guy I got along with him and his family really well. La Bamba brought us a great movie that introduced me to my musical idol probably in my top 5 and gave closure to his family that was still struggling with his death.
“La Bamba” outshines “Selena” simply based on who directed it: Luis Valdez. The man who is the godfather of Chicano Theater definitely put his stamp on this movie as well as others like “Zoot Suit.” The man is a titan of the Chicano Movement, whose storytelling and theatrical genius were central to the UFW struggle for justice, whereas Selena was rushed to production a mere two years after her passing.
I will never not tear up at Richies moms reaction or Bob's scream. As a side note to advert my tears from falling, during the 'home movie' scene where someone is walking around filming at the house, the old blonde woman thats sitting on the couch was actually the real life mom of Richie Valenzuela. RIP to Richie, Bob, Concha, and all the other legends on that plane.
@@ShaunKang69personally, I've never seen a black chick with a Mexican guy in real life, just those RU-vid channels, but I think it'd be interesting to see a movie or show with a couple like that 🤷
I grew up in Ritchies hometown, so it was almost a requirement to see this movie growing up. This is probably the movie I've seen the most, Blood In Blood Out would be a close second.
Ha, I grew up in pacoima in the 80s and when this film came out everyone went to go see it. We blasted the soundtrack from boombox and we went to the restaurant that the mom use to work at (it was still around). I even combed my hair like Ritchie for a while (I was in 4-5 grade). Pacas was great
In his review of La Bamba, Roger Ebert said La Bamba could not compare to the Buddy Holly Story because Holly was more famous, a better rock star, had better songs, and thus, a better movie. Man oh man was he wrong. The Buddy Holly Story was about Buddy Holly. But La Bamba is about so much more.
Yeah, I like Buddy Holly and he was a trailblazer but the movie wasn’t that great. I can watch La Bamba any time (just saw it last weekend) and the acting is good and it has some great dialogue. Great movie all around and it’s based on my hometown
Like most details in biopics, this story is completely false and didn't happen--but would be quite fascinating if it did! If a Roger Ebert biopic ever gets made, they should definitely add your anecdote of the time the usually illustrious film reviewer said something utterly preposterous about film.
@@maximusprime3459 yeah me too i always thought she was a cutie even in that movie she was banging her half brother but they was high school sweethearts and didn t know they was brother and sister lone star i think the name of it was
Strangely, she was not given a memory of.. thanks credit for Incredibles 2. She voiced Mirage in the first movie, who was Syndrome's seductive right-hand woman.
Because buddy holly, Richie and the big bopper died in a plane crash and gave Waylon Jennings survivors guilt cause he gave his seat on the plane to the big bopper and he and buddy joked i hope your bus breaks down Waylon said I hope your plane crashes just joking then tragedy
At first I was shocked at no Creeper, and even thought there was a spot for him around the “smells like fish, taste like chicken” part. Now that I think about it, it doesn’t really fit. Props for not abusing Creeper. Another great review 🫡
I’m from Santa Paula, California, Ventura county. The neighboring small town 15 minutes away is called Fillmore and that’s where the scenes of the house they live in was filmed. The house is still there in Fillmore too and I believe it may be remodeled at this point
Shout out to all the Bobs in this world on a sick one. Certified Barrio Classic for real. Thank you for giving this the Old Barrio attention it deserved.
This movie made me feel a sense of pride. My family has a lot of musicians. Mariatchis, salsa, rock and my generation, thrash metal. Yes I'm a Mexican thrash metal guitarist. Started in the 80s and now I'm in my 50s and still playing. I grew up in San Diego in a close Mexican family, (yes were all legal. I was born Jeremy and so was my dad). Lmao
Just turned 38 and beloved stepdad was Latino (born and raised in San Antonio Texas) so I grew up with sooo many Chicano movies this one being a huge one! Just found your channel. Subscribed!
Selena's dad was one of the executive producers for the film and he had heavy say on how she was portrayed. And the Netflix series is even worse!! Selena was portrayed as too goody goody and the perfect daughter, the perfect family, and all the bullshit. Close to the brady bunch if you ask me.
This used to be played everyday on HBO in the early 1990's. Still to this day, my brother calls Bugs Bunny, 'Buzz Buzzard every time he sees a cartoon with the rabbit or he hears the name, its fxcking annoying.
When ritchie said, "Heres a bit of a rattlesnake" and kicked into la bamba my jaw dropped. My 6 year old brain thought that was the coolest thing ever, and from then i wanted to learn guitar😂 which i did end up doing 🤘👽🤘
My mom always hated me watching this movie as a kid because Bob was so problematic. But I loved it and loved that Esai Morales played Bob so unsympathetically. He steals the movie from Lou Diamond Phillips and quite honestly Ritchie Valens.
It was La Bamba, Selena, or Stand and Deliver when I was in school. One time it was The Lion King (El Rey Leon) when we had a sub, but only because that sub brought it with her.
Yeah watching it a few months back it was a lot more abusive than I thought. Surprised how many older movies got away with something like this while stuff now a days mean words get R rating
Great video. I randomly found it and just decided to watch. Now I'm glad I did. I'm Nigerian and have very little knowledge of Hispanic-American movies or culture, and even less about the tragic plane crash but i do know that song "La Bamba" and "The day the music died" and had no idea the story behind it. Thanks for this experience.
As a child of cps and foster care, I came from multiple homes with domestic abuse, some people just don't realize its part of the human condition. It will never go away, its places you will never know, and its a part of life. Like it or not, its been here since humans were humans, and will be here till they are not anymore. You don't like it, don't do it, but people you know will engage in in abuse, and enabling of abuse.
I watched this for the first time when I was a kid. All the assault was tramatizing. But later in life, I was able to focus on the crazy destiny Ritchie was fearful of, that he couldn't escape. It's a great story. Plus, I always yell "Ritchie" at the end of Sleep walk, lol.
ngl, you so should've included the "Yo no speako Español" scene. It's pretty funny and I bet it would've made for GREAT gags such as "come on, foo" and "gimme some chon chon".
When I first watched this movie as a kid, I couldn't understand how Richie didn't know Spanish, sure maybe his mom didn't teach him, but wouldn't he have learned from working and hanging out with all the "paisas" on the farm. One thing I think everyone can agree on, is that the actors and actresses in this movie all did an outstanding job.
Oh yeah. I remember seeing it the first time in high school when I was a junior and it really moved me. I remember growing up in the San Fernando Valley where he grew up and almost everyone I knew, knew about him. Ritchie Valens will never be forgotten.
I was wrong, she died from alcoholism. I had her confused with one of actresses from stand and deliver who died from suicide by cop. @@theoldbarrio9589
I don’t think it’s abuse but more about Latino culture. Cause we all have that brother that is a drunk and resource to anger easily but knows that when shit hits the fan, he got your back. And my drunk aggressive brother had already save my ass twice already. And I know I’ll have his back.
Thanks for the video! You are a candle in the darkness. I was about 10 years old when this movie came out. I saw it in the theater with my parents and siblings. It hit us hard. It’s still one of my favorite movies. The quotes have never stopped coming from it. With high school buddies, family, whoever. 10/10 Orales!!
I can relate to the domestic violence, I grew up in a poor Latino family in a low income neighborhood. A lot stressful shit goes down unfortunately. I learned from it and made a vow not to repeat that kind of lifestyle as an adult.
Dude! I can not even count the times I have viewed this film, and EVERY SINGLE TIME......I cry like Niagara Falls. Watvhed the dvd with Los Lobos doing the commentary, that made it even more real.
Bruh! This ending got me yet AGAIN!!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 DAMN YOU!!! I too have seen it countless times and it's still sad 😢 he should have taken that damn bus. 😔
