00:00 Colorful Gloves Introduction
While gloves worn for warmth remain a common feature in menswear, especially in cold climates. You’ve probably noticed that most of those gloves are pretty utilitarian with bulky, thick bodies in bland colors like black or dark gray. These gloves are a far cry from the colorful, fine gloves that were once common in menswear.
These colorful gloves were often called day gloves. Because they were worn during the day as part of regular attire and were distinct from formal evening gloves.

10:39 The Decline in Overall Glove-Wearing
We’ll briefly conclude by noting that the decline in the use of day gloves parallels a decline in other forms of non-utilitarian men's gloves. We’ll briefly conclude by noting that the decline in the use of day gloves parallels a decline in other forms of non-utilitarian men's gloves.
11:10 Conclusion
We have no intention of leaving you on a sad note as we conclude our examination of why men stopped wearing colorful day gloves. So to brighten the mood and add some color, we’ll say that just because colorful gloves have fallen out of favor doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear them!
Not only can modern-day gloves keep your hands warm, but they also remain the perfect accessory for adding unexpected visual interest or a dash of color to any outfit. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much a pair of colorful day gloves can change the overall look of your wardrobe.

I bought your orange bronze rust suede gloves years ago and look forward to wearing them every fall/winter. They fit like new after this long and the cashmere lining keeps my hands the perfect amount of warm. The gloves don’t reduce finger mobility which is good when driving or digging into pockets. The button fits snug which is certainly a positive feature however can be cumbersome when wearing a thicker watch. The upscale look and wear of this glove helped me focus on an elevated wardrobe leading to benefits in everything I wear. Plus, they are unique! All in all these are my favorite glove and I encourage even casual glove wears to consider them.

About 2 months ago I bought 2 pairs of fort Belvedere lamb nappa gloves, in racing green and touchscreen burgundy, they are fantastic gloves and worth every penny in my view, however getting them over to the UK was a nightmare and still costs a fortune, if there were a way to order them via a market in Europe or something like that, shipping costs would be substantially lower, still love the gloves and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants quality dress gloves 👍👍👍

Hi Daniel - I bought my first pair from Fort Belvedere in January 2017, and they're still going strong! Since 2020, I've had the pleasure of working with the GG, and have an even deeper understanding for exactly what goes into the gloves. They're simply incredible, and I've since picked up the exact same green pair that you have. I'll admit that getting them to the UK from Fort Belvedere in the US might not be the easiest thing right now, but the fact I'm in my fifth year of wear for my first pair has provided me with a very impressive cost per wear (and I wear gloves pretty frequently!). You've chosen some beautiful gloves - I sincerely hope you enjoy them! 🙌

*GENUINE QUESTION* for my sartorial friends - I wear 1920's clothing every day - recently made some bow ties and started wearing them - lots of people talk to me in the street now... Seriously - people just stop me and talk sh!t. Can anyone think why people would be MORE inclined to talk to you in a bow tie? Id have thought it LESS approachable.

I would love to wear gloves especially colorful ones more often but: 1) can't find a proper size as I am between M and L 2) you need to take them off to do things, eg smoke or eat a snack outdoors, most gloves are too bulky for even adding sugar to your coffee in a winter outdoor cafe and 3) people don't spend that much time outdoors as they used to. If you're exercising outdoors you dont need gloves as you're warm and sweaty. A good glove should have a good fit, be flexible and be able to work with your smartphone. I've only found woolen gloves to be comfortable but they get wet very easily.
@gentlemansgazette
@gentlemansgazette Год назад
It sounds like you'll benefit from a properly sized glove according to your actual measurements, not just a standardized "M" or "L". To combat the bulkiness, you could also take a look at unlined versions. We'll be able to help you out with something that checks all the boxes for you! shop.gentlemansgazette.com/accessories/gloves?

People also wore gloves for "hygiene" to avoid dirt, bacteria and viruses when greeting people. I heard somewhere that an American politician wore out four pairs of gloves during a reception because of all the handshakes, his wife wore out three pairs, she had to retire before him, bc her hand hurt to much. Another reason people do not wear full gloves or mittens are electronic devices, smartphones. Halfmitts and cutoff gloves oth ... all kinds of handwarmers for cold weather that used to be feminine or oldladyish are now worn by young men.

Personal transportation and people started spending more time indoors with temperature control. It made a lot of stuff impractical...like hats. Because at their very core, gloves are a high wear disposable commodity. So spending a lot of money for a dainty disposable item is inherently strange. My take: The trend of men wearing colorful leather gloves was most popular in the early 20th century. At the time, gloves were considered an essential accessory for men and women alike, and they were often worn in a wide range of colors and materials to match various outfits. As fashion evolved, gloves became less practical for everyday wear and were reserved for more formal or special occasions. Additionally, with the rise of mass-produced clothing and accessories, the availability of gloves in a wide range of colors and styles became more limited, and men's fashion began to prioritize practicality and simplicity over bold colors and flamboyant designs. Today, gloves are still worn by some men for practical reasons, such as for warmth in cold weather or for protection while doing manual labor. However, colorful leather gloves have become less common in men's fashion and are now primarily worn as a statement piece for special occasions or as part of a costume. Overall, the shift away from colorful leather gloves in men's fashion can be attributed to changes in societal norms and values, as well as changes in the availability and practicality of such accessories.
