The MAIN reason for the existence of half tracks (according to pre war German reports) was MONEY. They were much cheaper than fully tracked vehicles, basically any truck can be transformed into a halftrack, which was actually done during WW2 by Germany (Maultier etc). The reason for the disappearance was the vast increase in technology AND available funding after the war. Very expensive fully tracked or wheeled vehicles with complicated mechanical drive trains had better offroad capabilities. So again MONEY was the decisive part, the military budgets have increased substantially.
They are the mullet of military vehicles. They were supposed to keep up with trucks on road and with tanks off road. They didn’t. I own one. They do one thing great, haul heavy loads on soft ground.
You didn't really answer the question. Fact is. Better Motors. More Horse power. APC's could be fully tracked now. The wheels were a problem. Often the wheels were turned but the tracks just pushed forward. It's control was limited. It's a fine idea on flat surfaces. And Tracks moved better off road. Wheels are used but only because of speed. Tracks are slower. Now you can have both.
...dual-tracks with pneumatic road wheels between extending a few inches, so that on pavement it could run on the rubber yet have the tracks for when it crosses anywhere that's soft? ....
