Many fail to realize that it's loaded with historical significance and carries a great deal of struggle in the story of its creation. Today we'll delve into the history of the St. Louis Gateway Arch.

@ShadowsEdge785 2 года назад
Having been a Tour Guide at the Arch, I can attest to that. However, the sway is totally normal. it is MADE to sway up to 18 inches (9 in each direction), however if sway is over 1.5 inches in either direction the top is closed, but that is up to the discretion of the National Park Service Ranger on duty at the top. However, it can withstand the windspeeds of a tornado, as it takes a HEAVY gale (I don't remember the exact windspeed) to cause any sway at all.

I’m a St.Lousian, and while I’m glad topics like this are covered over our city, their are many that are kept secrets and repressed that I wish would get covered. Like the gas chemicals that were sprayed throughout north stl. during America’s war with the Russians. Our own government sprayed chemicals as a “test” in poverty stricken and predominantly black streets, to see how they would react to the chemicals. My mother today runs a home health care and takes care of many elderly patients who say they remember running behind those trucks. Their parents, who were mainly alive during those times passed from different cancers.

As a toddler, I saw the unfinished arch. Forty-ish years later, I was driving cross-country, and, on the other side of the Mississippi, noticed that the arch, when reflected, made a lovely oval. Then, I took an off ramp and nearly ran off the road as the arch and it’s reflection became a Möbius strip. From the little bit I know, Saarinen was likely to have anticipated and/or planned for the effect.

I know this is nit picking but the only reason they got the Olympics is because they through a fit that the games were going to Chicago and said that if the Olympic committee didn't strip Chicago of the games St. Louis would have their own. The Olympic committee caved because the event was still new and they didn't want to take any chances.

The Arch was first proposed to Pittsburgh, PA. They wanted to mount it over the Ohio River at the Point. After all, Pittsburgh is the original "Gateway to the West". Louis & Clark started there! A boat builder up the Mon river in Braddock, PA. built their boat. But Pittsburgh turned down the Arch. That's when they aproached Stl Louis.

It did not line up at the top during construction, that's why tensioners we're installed along the back in order to pull the Arch apart in order to squeeze the last piece in, according to a documentary I watched a few days ago. Great video I had never thought of someone jumping off.

Amazing video, thought there is a correction that needs to be noted. At 9:11 the name stated for the affair is Jefferson. The actual name was the “camp Jackson affair” or “camp Jackson massacre”. It was called that because the Missouri state guard camp (southern leaning) where many of the victims had come from before being arrested by union forces. The camp itself was named in honor of the governor of missouri ( southern leaning)

You know Budweiser "The King of beers" And Kshe 95 one of the nations longest running rock radio stations. St. Louis is the best city for free attractions. The Science Center, city museum, art museum and the Zoo all have free admission.👍

There was another stunt too. Mid 1990's if I remember correctly, a "spiderman" scaled the Arch. He was decked out with specialized climbing gear, equipped with suction cups and wearing rubber coated fabrics. He actually reached the top, where a police escort was waiting inside the hatch to take him into custody.

Thank you for a well done historical video. The arch is really beautiful and one wonders whether it would be built again in this time. One day we will get around to polishing and cleaning the stainless structure and it will be even more reflective of the sunsets and city lights. There is a lot of history and great architecture in St. Louis. We have some problems but they can be overcome with will and love for each other.

I was an illinoisan for 50 years (now Long Islander). HUGE Cardinal fan still and been to the arch many times. If you have claustrophobia the ride to the top is not for you. Climbing into that little "egg" with several other people is very tight. Then you feel like you're going to go upside-down before it straightens out. And yes it does move while you're up there. Quite an experience.
