Why Did The Chinese Build A Road Through A Cloud For 4 Billion Dollars

Chinese has surprised everyone with its huge construction projects for a long time. This time, we will tell you about a new highway that is a real "super structure". The Chinese built a superhighway that's 240 km (149 miles) long called Yasi. The road snakes between tall mountains and sharp cliffs. On average, for every 1 km, it rises by 7.5 meters above sea level. So, this road is also called "a high-speed stairway to Heaven" and "the Skyroad".

Nonetheless, China is doing magnificently well by providing some breathtaking modern infrastructure in record time.

Nearby countries like Thailand could learn a lot from the Chinese. Instead of building tunnels, Thai civil engineers blow up hills and create a major environmental impact. Animals are then unable to cross from one side of the road to the other and unsightly concrete retaining walls are built in place to prevent rock falls / mudslides. The problem is Thais are very insular and are unwilling to learn from foreigners (or unwilling to pay high consulting fees) preferring to do things the way they know how, so they don't need to call in foreigners for help. Although much of the country is relatively flat, there are several regions, which are quite hilly or mountainous (such as the north and parts of the south as well as the western border region with Myanmar). Yet in the entire country there is just ONE yes ONE true road tunnel, down in a town called Betong, which is only about 100m long and more of a tourist attraction than serving an important function. All other "tunnels" in the country are underpasses built as alternatives to overpasses at intersections. Most roads in the north are steep and winding. Accidents are common. Several proposed highway projects include tunnels, but none have been built so far and some have been scrapped. It remains to be seen whether the country will ever build another road tunnel through a hill or a mountain. On route 304 in Prachinburi (a highway originally built by US army engineers in the 60s and 70s when American troops were stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War), there are two twin tunnels built functioning as a wildlife passage, but these are basically concrete tubes built over the road with excavated soil placed back over. Originally, there were no hills there as the terrain at that point is flat. Ironically, the road then starts climbing steeply into the hills from there, instead of a tunnel being carved through the mountains. Even when we're not talking about tunnels (which Thailand could use more of), the country is doing very poorly when it comes to expressway construction. For a country barely the size of one Chinese province and with a geography that unlike China's is rather easy to construct infrastructure over and a standard of living broadly similar to China, it is puzzling why the country still has only just over 500km of high-speed control access highway (expressway), all of which is either in greater Bangkok (the capital) or the nearby eastern seaboard. 3 intercity expressways are under construction starting from the outskirts of Bangkok to nearby provinces, but all of them are way behind schedule and over budget and even once complete, the total length of expressway will remain under 1000km, which is less than that of nearby Vietnam, a country that is significantly poorer, but whose economic growth is much higher. Additionally, Vietnam has gone from no expressway to having over 1000km worth in less than 15 years, while Thailand built it's first expressway 41 years ago and has managed only a little over 500km in this time. It may take 100 years before expressways cover the entire country of Thailand. By contrast, China builds 3 times MORE expressway in an entire year than Thailand's expressway master plan to be realized over 20 years (but will probably take 30-40). I'll be an old man before there is an expressway from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or down to the Malaysian border. What Thailand is good at is widening existing highways, many of which have been widened from 2 to 4 lanes, or 4 to 6 in recent years. So much so that lonely highways leading to remote border crossings that no one crosses have been widened to 4 lanes while ignoring the construction of much more important expressways in high-traffic areas and even bridges over canals in Bangkok.

Poor planning and corruption , would be the main factors , unless the King , has the final say on wether the construction takes place . Better to put in tunnels where practical . New Zealand , is also like this , widening existing roads , or building new ones , and failing to do geotechnical reports , which in places has led to delays and cost over runs . One road being built , is thru a native bat roosting area - solution , move the bats , rather than work around them . There's also very few road tunnels outside of the two main cities . While some intercity routes , remain unsealed , gravel roads , barely wide enough for two large vehicles to pass , with one cross country road , being even narrower , so if you , in your car , meet a truck , your car , will have to be reversed up to 5 miles , to allow the truck to pass - oh , it also loses its insurance - the car , not the truck . Similarly , with one beach which is used by tourist busses and locals , also cancels your insurance .

@@davidarundel6187 Thanks for your comprehensive reply. Very interesting. I have been to New Zealand several times, though only the north island so far. In the case of Thailand, it's simply the government department of highways in charge. They don't have the expertise to build tunnels (though several are being planned, but the question is what techniques will be used to build them as the only tunnels currently being built in Thailand are railway tunnels. The only other types are underpasses in the cities). Interesting times ahead for sure. I can't see the highway department building any road tunnels by themselves without foreign technical assistance, probably from Japan or China.

You are a Tai Ethnicity person right? Your origins lies in China. Your roots are Chinese. I cannot come to believe that Thai People cannot contruct better infrastructure for its people when you and your Han Brothers share the same genetic material thousands of years ago. China road building capabilities went as far back to the Ancient Silk Road where they opened the routes of Globalization for three continents: Asia, Europea and Africa. Each of these Silk Routes were cut through mountainous regions and The Chinese with their dedication and Persevarance overcame all difficulties to build these roads for Globalized Trade in the Ancient World. Even Now , with their BRI, they are busy connecting with the entire world through land, air and sea based connectivity infrastructure. It is only about time that China develops the entire continent of Africa and bring their integration to the World Economy.

The Chinese are amazing!! This is what a purposeful, corrupt-free leadership can achieve for its people!! Development at all levels, regardless of its ideology!! Kudos to XI JIN PING and the Peoples Army!!

It's a shame that China is ruled by such an evil dictator. The Chinese people are geniuses at building just about everything. Imagine if they were able to live their lives without fear of going to prison or simply dissappearing.

2 million-odd people of ethnic origin now face relocation and re-education. This is indeed a magnificent project that assists the centralization of Chinese governmental power. And what a great view of places that have remained unapproachable for centuries. Bring a camera; you won't get a chance like this again.

Hi, I just want to remind the content creator that the map used in 1:44 is totally outdated; it was the map before 1921, when Mongolia was still part of China.
@internationaldaily9820

Thanks Eric for pointing this out. The map is probably from Taiwan province which calls itself the Republic of China and its map includes the whole of Mongolia, large swathes of Russia, etc.

It didn't cost $4B USD. It cost $2B USD. There's a documentary about it. China's infrastructure is absolutely amazing. They can do work during the weekend, about 55-hrs that would take 2-months here in the US. And I watched a documentary about the "plank road"....good God, those men are either crazy/brave/desperate or all three!!

5:03 Your map screenshot goes from Chengdu to some place in western Shandong that is presumably also named Liangshan. The superhighway is entirely in Sichuan (as you narrated at 1:42 with a map that includes Chongqing which was split off from Sichuan in 1997). Do try to be more rigorous!
