What happened to the Dutch Empire? Why did it Collapse and what caused it to fall apart?
The Netherlands built an impressive empire, including South Africa, Indonesia and Suriname to name a few colonies. But why did it collapse? What caused the Dutch to lose so many colonies so quickly and what were the effects of this? Find out in this video, the latest in my very short animated historical documentaries (about history).

@@shonenjumpmagneto Mainland netherlands (The Dutch Republic) was occupied by France with the help of rebels, and went through several stages; 'The Batavian Republic' (Rebel led satelite state), 'Kingdom of the Netherlands' (Kingdom allied to France, Napoleon's brother was crowned king) and lastly it was annexed into the French Empire. Overseas territories were captured by Brittain in order to 'protect' them from Napoleon/Rebels. Brittain attempted to take over Dejima as well, but were seen off. @@marcoh703 I guess propaganda education works both ways then. For the colonizer and the colonized Here in Indonesia, history taught the students how brutal and repressive the Dutch were when holding an iron grip on Dutch East Indies. We are taught how the Dutch are using deceiving tactics to divide and conquer Indonesia for their personal gain and explain how corrupted the Dutch were when managing our archipelago. The government's education system explains all those terrible atrocities to us only to do all those terrible practices today (corruption, land exploitation, etc.) the same way our colonizer did. While in the Netherlands, it seems that students were taught that they were once the ruler of the Nusantara Archipelago that they nurtured and took good care of, which at some point, is true! The Dutch made amazing reforms for our nation's bureaucracy and agricultural development, constructed vital infrastructures, educated its people even though it's only for the clergy and nobility class within Indonesia, and indirectly connected all of us into one united domain. This is why looking at both ends of the story is important. But today, instead of posing facts from multiple perspectives, history only explain facts from a narrow perspective of the ones who hold power

@GamersOnVideos that might be a joke referencing WW2, when the Germans attempted to quickly annex all of the Netherlands but were stopped in their tracks at fortifications on the eastern end of the Afsluitdijk. The Germans were unable to advance any furter and nicknamed the Afsluitdijk "Der Totendam" (Dam of Death) due to the heavy losses they suffered in their attempts to break through the defenses. This eventually forced the Germans to thoroughly bomb Rotterdam, after which the Netherlands surrendered. But no German military personnel ever managed to cross the Afsluitdijk prior to the Dutch capitulation. This delay in the German advance is also what allowed the Dutch royal family to escape to the UK.

Some additional information. The incorporation of the Caribbean colonies into the kingdom of The Netherlands was not for selfish Dutch reasons. When the Dutch granted independence to Suriname in 1975, the Dutch government eagerly got rid of Suriname because it had stopped being profitable. Many Surinamers saw the writing on the wall and migrated to The Netherlands shortly before independence. The Dutch colonies in the Caribbean were even less economically viable ever since sugar had stopped being profitable. But its population wanted to avoid independence so they opted to become part of The Netherlands because so their children would be able to get higher education in The Netherlands and the mother country would still have to invest in proper health care and other services.

Can confirm. My uncle was in the KNIL and he said 'we were doing to those poor Indo's what the SS did to us. So we usually just kicked some doors down for show and went back to base. The people were scared of us and we were so incredibly embaressed.' He told me a story of kicking down a door and seeing an old man scared and shriveled in the corner, and he said 'wees niet bang, vadertje. Ik doe je niks.' (don't be scared, old man. I'm not gonna hurt you.) He said it's a crime to make old people scared like that. They should be enjoying their last years in peace. He never forgot that moment. Most of those boys really DID NOT want to be there. But there were a lot of psychopaths aswel, and it's good the warcrimes that went on are documented and studied. Then again: seems the Europeans are the only ones apologising all the time, as if the Indo's themselves don't have dark pages of their own.

This reinforces the idea that world war two was not just about defeating the nazi who were trying to create their own empire, but the changing attitude of western powers that is, "empires was nessesary for nation building", empires caused alot of stress to nations, conflict and war seems inevitable as nations fight for territory, After WW2 the idea of a community of nations, The United Nations was conceived and were countries and people determine their own fate and work together for the betterment of each other was intended. Thus, many countries gained their independence in the 20th century.

Yeah he have some rebellion spirit to make his home free from the invader. But he's Conservative. He do what his master commands to him. It's in fact GENERAL SOEDIRMAN that must have the credit of liberating Indonesia. Back then, even tho Soekarno command Soedirman to follow the Japanese and the Dutch in Dutch aggression, Soedirman disobey that command and keep fighting in guerilla warfare. Soedirman is the real hero of the Indonesia's independence. Soekarno is the hero of unifying the people of Dutch East Indies under one banner, Indonesia banner.

So they prefer to gave them independance Meanwhile usa made hawai a state. While it was colonized just 5 years earlier then philipines (1893) before 1893 hawai was an independant country Cuba was their colony too. Thats why they got so mad at fidel castro for liberating it in 1956. And even needed ussr protection to guarantee its independance and freedom Puerto rico is still a colony. It was part of spain on 1898 Not to mention the native amerika people who got exterminated in the 1700s 1800s early 1900s. So they cant claim independance like some african asian countries could 😆

@@adivtayudhatama3926 Americans supported Sukarno by pressuring the Dutch, but in the end only years later, the Americans supported the military coup in Indonesia against him, after sukarno leaned too much towards communism, leading to the total mess that Indonesia is today as a result of that military dictatorship. You're saying the Americans supported Indonesian independence because they were anti communist, but this isn't true. The mass killings of communists didn't take place until 1965-66 and was supported by the CIA against Sukarno. Inependance for indonesia had nothing to do with communism since the cold war hadn't really gotten underway in 1945-49. It was the US who made the Netherlands leave the war (which they weren't even losing), and it was the US who gave the go ahead for the military coup and dictatorship that followed in 1965

"The Dutch Empire" are some words you don't see very much. I don't think the Dutch ever saw themselves as an Empire, maybe some dreamt of it, between 1815-1830. I think "Colonial Power" is a term that the Dutch would use. The Dutch have always been aware of how fragile their existence is. Empires don't worry about their bigger neighbours and if they still exist next week.

If an empire fell in the 20th century, the answer is pretty much "Everything changed when the Axis nations attacked".

The Dutch Empire felt apart because it was never able to compete with the other large world powers. We were able to set an empire up in the first place (1602-1648) because in those times all other countries were dealing with civil wars and the 30-year war. The world was basically free real estate for us. So we were acting like a huge empire, but we were very limited in our actual size (e.g. a population of only 2 million people). After 1702, other powers like France and England were on full force in setting up an empire on their own, which we simply couldn't compete with. When England decided to destroy our VOC (1780's), we were doomed. When the French conquered us in 1796, we were already in crumbles. This time, we were free real estate to them.

Not really, Dutch Empire were still managed to gain strong foothold on Dutch East Indies before finally Japan came up and abolish the colony. Infact, outside Britain, Dutch Empire was the only other kingdom that were proudly and dearly tried to cling on their 'Jewel Colonies' a.k.a Dutch East Indies much same like Britain tried to cling on their 'Jewel Colonies' which today called as India + Pakistan + Bangladesh + Sri Lanka.

When you are so op that even France and Britain, the staunchest enemies at this point, team up to bring your empire down
