Why did the 1944 Ardennes offensive fail? What did the main generals involved think? Were there better alternatives? What were the main mistakes that the Germans made? When did both Model, Manteuffel and Rundstedt consider the offensive a failure? How did the German leader react when he was told that the offensive had failed?
Next, in this program, we are going to analyze all of these questions.

There was no chance that this offensive could have succeeded. It depended on things completely out of the Germans' control to succeed: mainly the weather remaining bad. Once the weather cleared up, even if it was after the Germans took some objectives, the Typhoons and Thunderbolts would rocket and strafe and bomb everything and the Germans didn't have enough air power of their own to stop them. The Germans should have probably tried to negotiate an end to the war after Notmandy got solidified. There was a lot of tough talk about unconditional surrender but the Allies would have listened if Germany got rid of Hitler. That wasnt going to happen, so the war took its historical course.

The 1st & 19th armies launched Operation Nordwind; the attempted recapture of Alsace Lorraine on 12-31-44 or 01-01-45. Also, the Luftwaffe launched Operation Bodenplatte on 01-01-45; the attacks on Allied airfields in Belgium, Netherlands, & France. Both the Germans & Allies lost hundreds of planes. But the Luftwaffe lost many remaining irreplaceable pilots such as group, wing, & squadron commanders (maybe some remaining aces as well).

Simply because they didn’t have enough fuel to make it to Antwerp and were dependent on capturing fuel storages of the Allies on their way forward. Quantity succeeded over quality, the theme of the whole war in a nutshell.

Perhaps it might be better to look at the difference in how the Americans fought in the Battle of the Bulge versus how the British and French fought (or didn't fight ) in the Battle of France. The Americans dug in and fought which enabled them to stop the 6th SS Panzer Army cold and disrupt the advance of the 5th Panzer Army. Also, the US 3rd Army was able to launch a major counter attack from the the south. The British and French, which suffered rather light casualties in the Battle of France, specially in comparison to the Americans in the Battle of the Bulge, kept retreating and trying to find a cohesive front until the British got trapped at Dunkirk and the French army collapsed. Large forces to the south never saw action.
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony-
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- Месяц назад
@phillipnagle9651 Didn't fight? The British literally pushed the German advance back some 8 miles at the Battle of Arras, Rommel had to halt his advance of the Panzers due to heavy resistance from the BEF. The French also fought hard against the Germans at the Battle of Hannut, at Hannut the French knocked out about 160 German tanks for a loss of 105 machines as well at the Battle of Montcornet, they attacked the German held village with another 200 tanks. The French drove off the Germans but later had to retreat due to lack of support and the intervention of the Luftwaffe. The Village of Stonne also changed hands 17 times. French casualties were 90,000 killed and 200,000 wounded. The only reason that the Americans were able to disrupt the advance of the 6th and 5th Panzer army in the Ardennes is because the Germans had no fuel and supplies and they had zero air superiority unlike in 1940 ( *The Germans had at least 5,600 air craft to face the Brits and French 2,900 air craft* )
@phillipnagle9651

@@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- It's what I've come to expect from the British as they repeat their mythology. The Battle of Arras was a minor counter attack that failed with the British quickly withdrawing to their original position. Most of the BEF did not even get involved in any major fighting. As for the absolute lie that the only reason the 6th Panzer Army was stopped was because they ran out of fuel is proved to be a lie because the bulk of that army was redeployed to south to face Patton. (I am always amazed at the lack of ability of the British to read battle maps.)

@@phillipnagle9651 I see you've fallen for the usual Hollywood propaganda then. @@phillipnagle9651 A minor counter attack that failed? Quote At around 4:00 p.m. (German time) II Battalion, Schützen-Regiment 7 was attacked by about 40 British tanks, which were engaged by artillery on Hill 111, roughly 0.62 mi (1 km) north-west of Wailly. German 88 mm FlaK guns knocked out several Matilda I tanks. Some larger Matilda II tanks among the Matilda Is advanced through the artillery and anti-tank fire unscathed, German shells bouncing off their armour. The tanks destroyed the German anti-tank guns with return fire and rolled over them, killing the crews. The British tanks were eventually stopped short of Hill 111 by fire from another artillery battery but other tanks bypassed the area on both sides. *On the southern flank of the 7th Panzer Division, the Totenkopf Division was attacked and some SS troops fled in panic*

They went against the Americans because that part of the front was scarcely defended, so they had the biggest chance of a breaktrhough. Also that part of the front was held by newcomers. The Americans called that aprt of the front "The Ghost Front". It wpuld have been much tougher to break through Montgomery's lines.
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony-
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- Месяц назад
You're mad if you think going against the British sector would be easy, remember that the British had A LOT of 17 pounder and 25 pounder artillery and anti tank guns in their army which were more than capable of knocking out some of the heaviest German tanks of the war. The Germans were not comfortable when facing the wrath of the 25 pounder which was just as effective as the Flak gun. The troops of the 21st Army Group were also very battle hardened and were not likely to break in the face of the Germans.
