Popping paper at 7 yards in a bunker just doesn't get much training done (unfortunately that's all that's available to way too many of us). How does that prepare anyone for all the unique and wild and unpredictable stuff people would face in real defensive situation? You have to go to more specialized training that puts on pressure, rises adrenaline, produces moving targets, makes the user mobile, increases perception, and puts the user in any number of less optimal postures for addressing threats. It's like people who lay on a concrete bench to sight in their hunting rifle, and then the actual hunt has them hundreds of miles away from anything like a bench to shoot from.

.A lot of females in the military had the same issue. This and for males of slight stature the Army and Navy kept .38 revolvers in inventory well into the 80's. Having been a LE Firearms Instructor for over 40 years (State / Federal) I can attest to the FACT that the reason LE agencies have switched back to the 9mm is because the Female and smaller Male recruits have a harder time adjusting to the "snappy" recoil of the.40. There is NO debate that the .40 is more powerful than the 9mm even in the best 9mm round design (124 grain Speer Gold Dot JHP) but that power comes with a price, RECOIL! The 9mm is very effective in the right load, but do not fool yourself into thinking or believing that it is as powerful as the .40. FACTS show it is not.

The problem with the Miami shootout wasnt that the 9mm was underpowered. its that the majority of the shots they actually landed on the perps werent deadly shots. swap out their loads to .40 and youre still dealing with a guy getting shot mostly in the arms and legs, capable of returning fire. The ONLY shot worth anything that fight was the one that lunged the guy and even THAT had to penetrate and arm before getting through the body the long way. the 40 would have done the same but not any faster.

My preferred carry was a 1911, .45 acp from 1968 -1998. When I left the military, and then, law enforcement, it became impractical for me to continue to lug around a 1911. I needed something lighter, more concealable, but never cared to trust my life to a smaller caliber until ballistics improved. With the right ammo, and a lot of practice; certain poly, sub-compact 9 mm handguns became my acceptable replacements. Good video.

Actually the FBI had their full power 10mm ammo loaded down to lower velocity when it became apparent female agents were struggling with the recoil. Then someone decided that this power level could be achieved in a shorter case than the 10mm. Smith & Wesson teamed with an ammo company to develop a smaller 10mm casing. So 40S&W was born.

@@AleisterCrowly2 For the same reason the general issue ammo/pistol combination in the military is the same across the board (save for certain Special Forces applications) for male and female service members. Commonality. It is far easier for ANY supply system to provide ammo and weapons to soldiers (or Law Enforcement personnel) if EVERYBODY is carrying the same weapon chambered for the same caliber. Michael Schaffer hit on a solid piece of firearms history above. What few people know, or if they do know tend to gloss over it, is that fewer and fewer men entering into law enforcement have any real experience with firearms of any kind unless they served in the military and even then, most Service Members, like most LEOs, only fire their issued weapons when required to for qualification on a range. The 9mm needs all the help it can get from hot loads and "magic bullets" to get off its knees as a defensive round. By the way I do, on occasion, pick up a box of the plastic tip stuff for my pistols but I don't trust them to expand and utilize them as range ammo and reload the brass afterwards. And don't get me started on how little faith I have in the plastic tipped rifle (hunting) ammo.

My PD dumped the 40 S&W and went back to the 9MM around 2014 on the pretext (aka Sales Pitch) that technology of 9MM ammo had improved greatly and therefore it is comparable or superior to the 40 S&W. The actual translation was 9MM ammo is significantly cheaper than 40 S&W ammo is. “The Brass” are always looking to reduce departmental costs and we know they don’t work the Street, their chances of finding themselves in a gun fight are slim. Now that I’m retired, I carry a Glock G29 (10MM) concealed.

There's no question that all other things being equal, .40 S&W still delivers more energy than 9mm. The recoil is snappier and it's harder on pistol internals, plus you get slightly less capacity. 9mm is very effective with modern loads and projectiles, and it's cheaper to shoot. In the right gun and in the right hands, a hot .40 is definitely more effective. There's some Speer Lawman 165 grain pushing 485 lb/ft of energy, and that's not even +P. All cartridges and loadings have their pros and cons. Your guest is incorrect in saying the 9mm outperformed the .40 and .45 in the ballistics tests. 9mm was chosen because it now offers "good enough" terminal performance, is easier for more people to shoot, plus offers a capacity advantage.

Word on the street is that the 1986 iteration of the 9mm 115gr Winchester Silvertip JHP was used in the MIami Dade FBI shootout. FMJ would not have stopped short. Oh, and the Hornady polymer tip addresses the issue of clogging, which frequently resulted in impaired expansion and overpenetration in older JHP designs. The polymer tip allows for more consistent expansion and penetration. The Hornady Critical Duty is able to achieve higher performance through barriers due to the polymer tip, a less malleable lead core formulation, and a bullet that doesn’t readily shed its jacket. For the average person the Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST are worth a hard look especially when you can find them in 50ct LE packaging.

If you shoot enough and you can handle a .40 SW, it's got sufficient design and sufficient real world velocity (1000+ fps) then so be it. My first pistol I bought for myself was a G23 gen 4, .40. It was when LE was using .40. I have no problem shooting it. The other factor was availability of 9 conversion barrels. I also have a .357sig barrel now. Three calibers, one gun. Can’t do that with a G19. With ammo shortages, I can rotate to whatever is available. Another factor has been firearm cost. Most of what I buy is used. Went into a store looking for a smaller gun, pre 365, post .40. They had a subcompact 9 and a subcompact .40. Liked it, but the 9 was nearly twice the cost of the .40. .40 wasn’t selling with the constant buzz about 9. Same brand, similar age. A brand I have experience with and like. Scooped up the .40 and have not been sorry. Though smaller, actually shoots better than the G23. I keep looking at the Sig 365, but can’t justify the expense right now.

It takes more training for new officers/agents to use higher recoil guns such as 40 S&W, 10mm or 45 ACP. Some of the recoil shy and smaller officers just can't become proficient with the larger calibers. A HUGE amount of research went into creating a 9mm load that would provide good stopping power and be manageable for the more recoil shy agents/officers. There are now several 9mm loads with good track records on the street. However, the 40 S&W,10mm and 45 ACP are still excellent choices when used with appropriate loads for the situation.

This all depends on what your target is. I use a 40 S&W for self defense against black bear. When dealing with a bear the caliber needs to start with a 4. The 9mm against bear works if you are lucky. In a conflict, you usually get 3 shots before conditions change. I like the 40 S&W for accuracy at 100 yards against critters like coyote, deer, and squirrels. The difference in calibers differs only by needs and opinion. The best way to develop a good opinion is to use the different calibers against a living critter. The 40 S&W creates a 1" exit wound in deer.

First. The 9mm has made major improvements over the years. However it still doesnt top the .40. Keep in mind when the .40 was being adapted many shooters were coming from .357 magnums so they were used to the recoil. Now there are "standards of who can be in law enforcement and few have actually shot the .357, so the recoil of the .40 was too much for them. Back comes the new and improved 9mm. The 3 main calibers .45, 40 , and the 9mm can do an effective job so now it is up to the shooter to do his job. Just pick one and dont look back. Yes it's a little heavier but we are talking ounces here and base mags for a Glock 20 are 15 rounds. So let's try to keep the comparisons a little more close to reality.
