All throughout Star Wars (the Phantom Menace to Revenge of the Sith and into Return of the Jedi) we have seen only one Sith Master and one Sith Apprentice. Thousands of years ago, the rule of two was created. In this video we will go in depth as to WHY the rule existed and why Sith continued to obey and respect it.
Thanks for watching! :)

Hey my friends! What did you think about the Rule of 2? Would it have been better if the Sith just grew and grew into a big clan?
@Noah123204
@Noah123204 7 лет назад
I think that the if the Sith grew into a giant clan, it would have expanded on the iconic "Star Wars" title, making a better and larger theme of good vs evil. More battles would most likely occur and possibly a bigger war than the Clone Wars/any major scale battles Pre - Star Wars Episode 1 would've happened.

As to the rule of two it was a pragmatic decision based on the needs for some stability in a world of perpetual assassination and lack of trust. By acknowledging the problem and codifying the system then some stability for the strong years of the present over lord and the provision to ensure a strong competent replacement trained in more than just fighting skills but leadership- Think of the Turkish Emirs who had their brothers strangled to ensure no civil war and social continuation and growth among'st a brutal people who could easily fall into anarchy and fail. I think the world the Prequels and the KOTOR and KOTOR II show is amazing and visionary. It is Star Wars at it's most evolved and deep, It is what most of the discussions are about precisely because there is so much to talk about rather than the original trilogy. I think even the acting is REALLY good (Palpatine!) and that the portrayal of Anakin was perfect for his insecure late teenager personality. He PLAYED HIS ROLE, perfectly. He is not Luke and this is part of why HE becomes Darth Vader not Luke The whole point about Anakin is he is really gifted but a tragic personality, not strong enough for his talents. He has a much much worse past than Luke and on top of that the wrong personality to deal with these tragedy's. He is much more arrogant AND insecure than mellow Luke and is also wrongly treated by the Jedi council with only Qui Gong being wise as too what was needed (lots of love, support AND critique) because unlike the blind suspicious Jedi Council he was open minded and in touch with what was actually going on. Yoda is not wise at this point (and later admits this) and quite blind as are the other Jedi or else they are suspicious (negative). Qui Gong loved Ani instinctively and was his father in practice if not genetically. Anakin would not have resented instruction and discipline from a secure mature loving father figure he admired rather than an 'older brother' Obi Wan to who he felt competitive. As an older man Obiwan had learned his lesson so well he forwent the traditional Jedi practice of child cult manipulation and let Luke actually have the proper family life that Anakin never had but really needed. I, myself, was less than happy when the new films came out mostly because Jar Jar was so jarring a personality. He was just an annoying clown fool I thought (like most) but now I do not think that even that is right. It is clear that either Jar Jar is a Sith himself (perhaps the senior planner who pulls the strings while being camoflaged as a fool or just a tool of Palpatine's as he is always where he needs to be to turn things Palpatine's way, including becoming THE Senator who convinces the Galactic Senate to give up liberty ala Hitler 1934 with the 'emergency proclamation' (created by the needs of the Clone wars; yet unseen by the blind Jedi and Senate). It has gotten to the point that I hardly can hardly be bothered to watch the original trilogy as they seem as the 'Hobbit' does to the 'Lord of the Rings', a simple child's nursery rhyme version of a far deeper dark complicated dangerous adult world!

Star Wars Theory I love your intro dude. I wondered this too. I mean, 2 isn't exactly an order. It's a partnership. But your explanation answered my question. No there won't be a rule of two because Kylo and Snoke are not sith. Snoke told Kylo that sentiment caused the fall of the Empire. That sounds more like Yoda than it does a sith. Snoke is something else. I think he's either the shaman that taught Qui Gon part of the secret of eternal life, or a fallen angel from Millius Prime.

come one after over a thousandth years were there still just as strong as the 4 strongest jedi combined and the rule would also insure that knowledge would be lost because a apprentices that grows stronger than his master before the master could teach him all that he knows will cause a massiv lost in knowledge not to mention that if the series would be a little more realistic that would by just 2 have the sith ended a long time ago by an accident that would kill them.

The Rule of Two is kind of stupid. I know the Old Republic era Sith were more quantity over quality, but it was much better in it's way. There probably weren't many Sith, if any, that were as powerful as Sidious and Vader, but thousands of Sith is still more powerful than just two. And with that many Sith, there's bound to be some that are truly powerful. Plus, not all of them are going to be ones that teamed up with other apprentices against their masters. It could also make some of the Sith more powerful, since they constantly would have to be fighting against their rivals in the order. The Rule of Two era Sith lacked this challenge entirely. The survival of knowledge, the discovery of knowledge, and the survival of the Sith in general would also be better off if there were more Sith. The reason for this is because there's more Sith that are researching, and more Sith to actually hold onto and protect the knowledge. And it's a bit risky having only two Sith at any one time because if those two Sith die, the whole Sith Order dies with them. That's exactly what happened in RoTJ. The Sith are much more likely to survive if there are a lot of them, even if it does cause a lot of conflict, there will always be some Sith alive.

The Rule of Two has merit, and a major weakness too. Namely, a Sith lord invests years of his life training an apprentice. If the apprentice challenges for the throne and fails, that process will have to start all over again. The next apprentice is likely to be successful, but not because he became more powerful than a master at the peak of his powers, but because the master is now likely past his prime. And that undercuts the philosophy of each new master being more powerful than the last.
@ZONE-fj8ly
@ZONE-fj8ly 6 лет назад
Darth Bane had faced this problem before but he managed to find the holocron of Darth Andeddu to solve it. Even if age ravages the Master, they would just have to find a new vessel and make it their own. That way the Master would remain youthful and strong until the apprentice is proven the strongest.

Also there is zero contingency - if something happens to the master before being able to train an apprentice, the line of Sith ends. Sith Lords aren’t immortal, they could die in accidents, or what if the intended fight between master and apprentice ends up killing both? Also Sidious killed Plagueis in his sleep, meaning it’s not necessarily the more powerful fighter who continues the line. That’s why I always believed there must be some secret contingency plan, like another watcher in the background who would interfere if such a disaster happened. Not necessarily Jar-Jar of course.
@zulubro
@zulubro 3 года назад
@@magicmulder deep. hadn't thought about it to that extent, but that's exactly right. i see the Sith as a cross between a cult and the mafia. the only way to survive and to thrive is they have to have a code, a higher calling (that everyone adheres to) that supersedes personal interests, and puts the order's interests above all else.

Also, in the first Bane book we learn, that Jedi and the Light side get stronger in numbers, while the dark side shares a Pool and get weaker in numbers. The rule of two means that the two Sith are at peak Power. Doesnt explain why the sith follow that rule, but I think thats an important side Note.

@penguindawg8817
@penguindawg8817 Год назад
@@Evan8787 there is 1000 dark side points, you have an apprentice and a master, they each get 500 , you get 1000 siths they each get 1 point. That's how I interpret it, siths are selfish so they wouldn't want to share their power anyways. While jedis only use the power for protection of others.
@Teaseal8
@Teaseal8 3 месяца назад
Mosts of this is true but not because of some limit of the dark side but because the sith betrayed each other too often the dark side and the light side are no different in the level of power they have just the users. The rule of two was made because of Bane's younger life with his very abusive father and uncaring people not because of the dark side being venom it just so happened to work instead of killing the sith off.
@kendivedmakarig215

Before Darth Bane's era, the Sith betrayed each other as compared to the Jedi weakening the Sith powers. The Rule of Two's purpose is for the Master Sith to solely train the Apprentice to become more powerful. The Rule of Two is just like the Jedi's rule of NO ATTACHMENT.

I think a friend of mine put it nicely: "I think I’ve talked about this before, but-seriously, Darth Bane was quite possibly the worst thing that ever happened to the Sith. Like-weird, demonstrably false zero sum/“dark side as solute” models of how the Force works notwithstanding, he managed to do what the Jedi spent millennia attempting: he removed the Sith as a galactic power. Congrats, buddy, you consigned the Sith to a millennium of being a complete non-factor, destroyed their culture and history, and risked the sad miserable remnant that was left being utterly obliterated and forgotten if both master and apprentice got into a fucking speeder accident!And all the Banite Sith had to show for it was … 20ish years of ruling the galaxy (but not openly-and not even by virtue of Being Sith; Palpatine would’ve won the galaxy whether or not he was Sith, he was just that good at politics) followed by some farmboy blowing it all to hell? Wow. Incroyable."

I think the implication is that the Sith were becoming weak enough due to their own internal conflicts that their end at the hands ot the Jedi was actually becoming close to inevitable. Darth Bane finished the job for them, sure, but in a way that ensured that eventually a much more powerful Sith would emerge who could end the Jedi.
@AbsurdFalcon

Bane was the best thing to happen to the sith the brotherhood of darkness and the sith as a whole before them was destroying itself left and right with infighting and it’s a serious problem when weak apprentices can gang up on a dark lord and kill them then install a weaker substitute. The sith were still a major galactic power their enemies belived them dead but they were hiding in plain sight as politicians, artisans, builders, and prominent figures in the galaxy. Hell Plagueis himself was the former head of the intergalactic banking clan. Plus while they were in hiding they were amassing power, bane was already stronger then any of the sith that existed in the brotherhood of darkness and each successive master was stronger than bane.

What if The New Sith-master (former apprentice) dies before he finds a New apprentice or dies before The New apprentice has learn everything!? How could The rule of two survived for a millennium with those risks!?
@joey5106
@joey5106 7 лет назад
Than he dies. It stops one master-apprentice line not the entire existence of the sith. There are multiple ways to obtain information about the sith way than just learning stuff from your master. There are books and holocrons, or they learn things from eachother. In the comic series ''Darth Vader'' you'll learn that Sith Masters don''t often give their students information like Jedi's give to their students. A sith student needs to obtain information through spying, threatening people or murdering them for information. There is a scene in the (I think) 1st issue where Vader asks something to Palpetine and Palpetine answers ''A Lord of the Sith asking questions and expecting them to be meekly answered? You are a poor apprentice if you think so...'' so there you go. Hope I answered that question for you.

I know you think that with only two Sith if there was the slightest accident the Sith are gone forever, but that's not right. If a Sith Lord were to, say, wreck his Harley or get shot with a blaster, he deserved to die as it would mean he was weak/foolish and therefore unworthy of being a Sith. The rule of two was DESIGNED to get rid of the weak/unworthy/accident-prone.

The Jedi tend to keep as close a track on Grey Jedi as possible; as most of them are not a part of the Order, the Jedi have little authority over them, and are concerned they might become Dark Jedi (Jedi that have embraced the dark side, not entirely dissimilar to the Sith).

No, it's lame and doesn't make any sense. Lucas just added it because there were only 2 "Sith" in the OT. If he added more in the prequels, he'd have to explain why they all disappeared by Ep. IV, which he clearly didn't. It was much cleaner, and easier, to make up some "rule" that keeps the Sith to 2 so that Vader and Sidious remain the only two Sith by the start of Ep. IV.

Though I suppose it's deliberately a 'so stupid it just might work' kind of plan as it plays on the Jedi orders arrogance, they loved to believe that they had destroyed the Sith and that they could halt their return and that nothing would be changed by events for Republic, they were so wrong.

The sith were reckless and destroying themselves for power making them weak against the Jedi. It was time to start fresh, something new like the rule of two. This allowed the sith to lay low and strike when the Jedi least expect and in the end it worked. I always felt the Jedi should have followed the rule of two as we’ll or something else along those lines. It would mean less padwans falling to the dark side and less of the strict codes that’s more about keeping Jedi in line then truly enlightening them on such natures. They’re would be much more of a focus on the force and be less involved with politics as they would go planet to planet, city city learning the force and helping those in need. The large number of Jedi or sith is their own downfall as the sacred teachings of the force was spread too thin.

The rule of two made sense at one time, when the Sith were first wiped out. Basically, after the events of ROTS, the jedi basically had a rule of two forced on them, as well. At least for a time. So it makes sense to me while the Sith were regrouping, they would practice a rule of two. I don't know if it made sense for that rule to be practiced for 1000 years, though. I think what could have helped the Rule of Two make sense is if the Jedi actively hunted the Sith into near extinction, and would be dispatched to either turn the Sith or other dark siders back to the light, or destroy them. There would be a certain amount of summitry to that, as well as make Maul's "At last we will have revenge," statement make sense, show how the jedi were in fact flawed, as well as make the prophecy of bringing balance to the force make sense, because the Sith would want to do to the Jedi what had been done to them.

The Sith empire nearly brought the republic to its knees and they were both fighting the Republic AND themselves, now imagine if they were united among themselves and solely focused on the republic. Forgetting about the boundaries of cannon Rule of two is flawed and has its own weakness, it has been shown trough the SW stories that force doesn’t have a given quantity or potency, it all depends on the wilder, The exiles, Freedon Nadd, Marka Ragnos, Darth Revan, Vitiate, Exar Kun, etc.. all form the time of many and were no less powerful for it, it could be argued that by theory of the Rule, many should have been way above the previous mentioned ones yet most are just cannon folder in comparison, then you have the sith own nature of betrayal and plotting, always holding something back for they know betrayal will inevitably arrive, little pieces of wisdom not passed on, small techniques not thought, forms forgotten…..Small and ineligible in each generation this losses may be, but in time, build up, they do. ^_^ Anyway I really would love to see the Pure blood brought back for a moment, even if just one

I think it could have something to do with the "balance" in the force, something we hear sometimes Force is neither good or evil, it is the force To keep thing even there should be around the same number of jedi and sith Maybe old sith realise that each individual sith were to be more powerful if they are outnumbered by the light, a bit like the force wanting to be in equilibrium between light and dark and it would make sens with the quote brighter the light darker the shadow, more jedi equals more darkness in th few sith that exist

I think the rule of two is understandable, as absolute power is only one step away for any sith underling all that was required was to learn and obey until they knew enough, and the master knew as long as they kept teaching the underling more stuff and showing how much value keeping them alive and powerful was to advancing the same plan the apprentice had, it didn't really matter which of the two had the most power if you could keep gaining power. the problem with more sith and even in the times of the SW; TOR games, is that there are many masters and one such apprentice doesn't know what worth one master could have if they hadn't encountered each other and would more easily follow their own plan or masters in killing off any rivals, i believe the emperor during that period and the council tried to limit the killing but it still plagued their order with much knowledge being lost. If you have more than one underling jealousy issues arise too, if one is better than the other the weaker has a better time taking out the master and learning by himself at a later time than risk being killed off for being weak, so they often made gambles on everyones lives in order to get a leg up, when the master thought his students were content and not looking out for such dangerous gambles. You'd also have other masters trying to trick your apprentices and setting them up to be pawns just to get a slight political leg up, I don't think more than a small council of sith working together for a solid cause could work for a prolonged time unless the person at the top forbid infighting and was so powerful that even combined they couldn't take him down as with the sith emperor in TOR. The rule of two works much better, and the way palpatine did it, or in legends at least with many assasins and cults to also keep note of the teachings of the sith incase something happened to him/vader and even backup cloned bodies, which kind of breaks the rule of two not really wanting to allow vader to surpass him, maybe because he wasn't seen as worthy maybe because palpatine really didn't want to die/other reason to do with the invasion coming?

sith had setbacks and imo it wasnt until tenebrous died that the grand plan truly began to evolve and actually come to fruition. plagueis and sidious orchestrated such chaos within the galaxy in just a few decades that new order could be established quite easily. i used to think that having only two sith at any given time was pretty limiting thing, but it did lower the chance of their discovery and their secrecy allowed for the sith to observe jedi and grow stronger, while jedi order grew stagnant believeing their ancient enemy is gone.

This is really further explained in the new trilogy, when snoke talks about how he knew, that as kylo grew stronger, his counterpart in the light would as well, playing into the whole, the force is a balance of light and dark. If there are thousands of powerful jedi, and 2 sith, the power if the sith will equal the power of the jedi, which have their power much more spread out.

The mentality that one must always usurp the other for power gain is not unique in this predicament. The Sith "exiling" themselves with the rule of two was to re-bolster their power in this way because of the jedi they couldn't do that any other way. However the Sith should consider an isolationist mentality with the rule of two as its core. One master, one apprentice, per space per time. Not as prolific I suppose but vastly more effective at obtaining a much stronger core. Imagine 1000 Sith masters training 1000 Sith apprentices separately in their own ways and the insurmountable power that could come from any unity that group may posses.

Until a Sith Lord can overcome Mortality entirely or find a way to get Evil to work together for a Greater Evil in a cult like way, the Rule of Two is ideally the best they can hope for. Considering that the Sith can empower their non-force sensitive troops to not fear death and to be more aggressive, the Sith don't REALLY need numbers, they just need to be one step ahead of the Jedi. Its the Grey Jedi that will cause the Sith Trouble as Grey Jedi can use both the Light and the Dark and are less corruptible than the Top-Heavy Pedestal Pontificating and Conservative Jedi Order.

The rule of 2 could be suspended if the sith could learn to trust each other. If so, then they could form a clan of those they trusted. If this was able to happen without the jedi knowing, this sith clan may have been able to get large enough. If it was able to, they could attack the main jedi temples and maybe wipe out the jedi. THEN the rule of two could go back into effect. It would be cool to see what you could do with this Star Wars Theory!

because the power of the Sith is better when its not corrupted. when the dark brotherhood was in charge, weaker Sith would gang up on stronger Sith to overthrow them and become masters. but this corrupted the Sith, making them weaker and weaker as the weaker Sith ganged up on the stronger masters. bane saw this to be wrong and began a plan of wiping out the Sith. the dark side of the force needs to focus itself only on the strong. the Darth bane series is seriously the best EU legends ever. I believe the rule of two is really good. It fuels the hatred, competition, disappointment, and overall search for power that is the core of what the Sith value. Hmm... Thinking of Revan's words, how poison in many cups is diluted, made me think of the Disney version of star wars. Perhaps she, and Kylo Ren as well, are so powerful because they're alone. During the republic there were thousands of Jedi, yet many, even those considered masters, were defeated by sith who were so much more powerful. Dooku, sidious, maul, ventress, savage oppress, were all very powerful in the force. I exclude grievous because he wasn't force sensitive, though he perhaps killed more Jedi than any other because of Dooku's training. Maybe Rey is so good with the force because she's nearly the only vessel the force has to go through.

Sith Empire is cooler, but I think Disney is sticking with the Rule of Two. It just makes the story more condensed and easier to follow as you have fewer important characters to follow, and if you have multiple "special people" in a setting like force users than a lot of them are going to by necessity take up more and more screen time as that's what the audience wants to see. When it comes to the Sith in particular this is an extra problem since they are the villains. Then you have a problem with an inconsistent villain. This is one of the biggest problems the prequels had. Maul, Dooku, Grevious, there was a new villain each movie, and none got enough screen time to get the same precedence and character and aura of dread that Darth Vader had in the movies. True they did get that in the Clone Wars TV show and now Maul is one of the most popular Star Wars characters, but when we only had these movies all 3 were "oh, that bad guy with 3 lines in the whole movie who looked cool, but whose name I can't remember." It worked much better in the original trilogy, because we had consistently Vader as the main baddie and always present threat, with the Emperor as the true evil in the background. Which worked even better since the Emperor got some screen time even in a new hope and it was established almost immediately that he was Vader's boss. There was none of that villain switcheroo crap some franchises( like Final Fantasy) like to pull part way through.
