Why did this rare Jones Patent pistol mechanism not catch on? With firearms expert Jonathan Ferguson

The mid-nineteenth century saw huge strides in the development of repeater pistol mechanisms, with the introduction of the Colt Paterson revolver in 1836. Other excellent designs would follow in the ensuing decades. But, as we'll discover with the Jones, weapons designers continued to deviate from the revolver concept in favour of unique, multi-barrel systems.

Really fascinating, thanks Jonathan and team. It was great to see how that mechanism was supposed to work. I suppose that, with the weight of 5 or even 10 barrels, these pistols would be quite useful as primitive clubs, after all shots were fired.

One huge benefit this would have over contemporary designs is the much lower effort for double action shooting, much more akin to a modern automatic pistol in that you have to manually cock once and then can fire the rest of the "magazine" with the low effort of single action trigger.

When you go to the right to show something on the other camera it's not used or you have to move around a lot for the lighting. Give filming from above a try for close ups. You see the movement in a natural way facing you, the stability of the table makes it easier to control and still images can be used as well while being less blinded. Now you have the weight of the handgun while on your elbows moving it around. The whole table in view is so far away for handguns. It would've been nice to see those patents of the two row model as a still image or at least a link to it in the description. A quite interesting mechanism.

Hey Jonathan, I have a question: How do you select the guns you make those videos about? What are the criteria you use to select them?
@jonathanferguson1211
@jonathanferguson1211 Год назад
The format (created by my colleague Jack) being (for those that want to play along) a test of knowledge/guessing game of sorts (it originated on social media as just photos of weird guns!), there has to be something unusual about the piece - either the whole thing or some interesting technical or historical feature. We also like to include things with any known history behind them. A lot of the collection can obviously fit this one way or another. Realistically, I have limited time to specifically choose objects for this series, so I often drop in things that I've discovered during cataloguing, research, or external enquiries. Finally, although muzzle-loading arms don't do very well at all in terms of views etc, I try to include one per recording session because they are such an important part of our collection and of firearms history.
@Bird_Dog00
@Bird_Dog00 Год назад
@@jonathanferguson1211 Thank you for your answer. There have been some very interesting guns in those videos I have never even heard off (the repeater conversion for the Martini-Henry comes to mind). Interesting comment on muzzle-loaders. I can immagine that muzzle-loaders are seen as not as interesting from a technical perspective. There simply isn't as much "going on" as in a repeater or self-loader. Keep up the great work.

It looks like this could still be one half of a full pistol. That half of the rear sight might be removed to allow the right sided pistol to attach, creating a full rear sight as well. Not sure if this is an earlier or later iteration, possibly just a proof of concept for their "slinky action" later patented as a dual sided pistol.
