Tell me about yourself. Oh I always dreamed about being honest with that one ! For example: I Do not like interruptions when I work, I hate overtime, multi tasking, or micro management. I'd much rather be sailing or golfing !
It’s really messed up that you can’t tell the truth about toxic employers and tyrannical miserable bosses. We all have to pretend the company was great and management were all angels. As if there is no way a manager could be a horrible person.
Yes. It's a circus. But when in Rome..... Also, that's why ppl leave jobs and are always in a pursuit of a better one: because they can't be honest and they are dealing with the system that is dishonest and corrupt. So, we play the game and are hardly ever satisfied with the work environment because the employer never cares about making work enjoyable, but only profitable at the expense of the employees
I so agree, if I am a director and interviewing someone and they tell me all previous 5 or 6 jobs were great but left for other reasons, I will immediately assume BS as all of us have experienced toxic workplace in some of our previous jobs
Totally agreed...but gotta play the game and don't let that ruin your chance to get a job elsewhere...feel your pain...just got out of one myself about a month ago
@@lutfyanwar1157 yes...Lutfy as you said things happen. Personally up until 2021 I didn't deal with a toxic boss...they had issues but it was OK and I could deal with it. This one...he was sick...absolutely sick so I did a mutual separation from company. Things happen and it's life and in my opinion hiring managers should have compassion a bit as well and not judge
Unfortunately, what is perceived as "job hopping" is common and necessary in this current job market. The only way to increase your salary for most of us is to leave within 2-3 years.
Hey there. Just wanted to let you know I secured an administrative position after several rigorous panel interviews due to your tutelage. Thank you so much. I am forever grateful. The hiring manager literally said, “ I knocked it out of the park,” and “everyone was so impressed.”
How about: "I departed from my previous position due to a reorganization in leadership, which led to a shift in my responsibilities away from my areas of expertise and passion, prompting me to refocus my search on companies like yours, where I can make meaningful contributions."
Hi Madeline, I got a job thanks to your detailed and exceptional answers. I'm so grateful. Just wanted to say it's INSANELY helpful when you give examples/sample answers to a question, even if it's for a random role like a receptionist. Keep it up 🙌😄
I explored other opportunities within the company, but I found myself hitting a ceiling, and that's why I'm very excited for this role, as it identifies more closely with my strengths.
How do you say professionally: “I was promoted to a new role but was constantly being pulled back to do my old job therefore I left” - Without sounding like you’re not a team player.
Ive been looking for a job for over 5 months I’ve applied to so many jobs and got 5 interviews unfortunately I wasn’t chosen! I started to binged watch your videos and I had the 6th interview today and I got a chance for a 2nd interview thank you so much !! The biggest tip was making it a 2 way conversation and smile ! And have a good vibe between you and the interviewer !!!
@@CelesteG26 unfortunately didn’t get it due to my references lol there was nothing “wrong” with me in their words. I recently found a new job so that’s okay lol there is always an opportunity at the end of the tunnel! the 2 way conversation and having a good vibe is what got me 2 job offers ! Goodluck ☺️
I left my dream job after 10 years because as soon as they found out I was pregnant, they treated me differently; cut my pay, and gave my lead role to a male who was less senior to me. They also made me train him after they laid me off. This has been such a hard thing to lie about in job interviews, let alone get over. Put on you brave faces ladies if you’ve had the same treatment. 🌺🌸🌼
@@stringsgalore Thanks, Rikki. Yes, it is 100% illegal, but it still happens. When talking to several lawyers, I would have had a winning case if I pursued it because I had everything on tape. I decided not to sue them for fear of being blackballed in the industry; where I live, my dream job is hard to come by. Everyone knows everyone. My next boss was besties with one of the directors I would have accused of discrimination at the previous job. 🙄 As soon as I found out, I made the hard decision to suck it up. As much as some employers claim to be “equal opportunity”, it’s not always the case. 😔
I made a regrettable decision with a task that cost me my job last month. I never had anything reckless on my job history or my performance. But this time it was a performance issue and now I'm scared to answer that question. Although, I have learned my lesson from it but I know that question is going to come up.
We are all human and make mistakes. Just tell them what you have learned from yours, and how you have grown... you know all that fluffy stuff we are expected to say. But say it with confidence and sincerity, because I think you DID learn something from it?
"One Sentence"--Working in higher ed is rewarding and I love [quality/task/skillset that relates to the position for which I'm applying] , but opportunities for growth are very limited, which is why I'm so excited about working for your company.
Interview is how best you can lie and decieve your interviewer in a gentle manner. They want an honest person but subconsciously they want manipulators
HELLO..... I just secured the position I applied for thanks to all of your S.T.A.R format videos you give such full advice and I recieved the offer letter today. Thank you
Made it to the last stage of the hiring process. The first interview went well but the second one with the director I was nervous and it didn’t go like I hoped. Now I’m waiting for an update on Monday. This whole weekend I have been stressed out because I really loved the company.

The way employers interview it seems they want to hire the biggest liar. Why would you want that in an employee?!! If I was a hiring manager I would hire the person who was honest!
Yes, interviews are a parody. Literally everybody knows why people want a job: the payment is equal or more than what they get now, they hope the job is neither too stressful, nor too boring and that they feel needed and valued by the company or business they work for. Nobody is looking for a job because it is his dream job or because they want to contribute to the forthcoming of the business for the greater good.
I got asked that question recently and I just said the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s a valid reason because so many people lost their jobs due to the pandemic do that’s very easy to understand. One sentence
Love your info! After changing my resume based on your teaching, I landed a part time online tutoring job that I can do in the evenings. Thank you! Have an awesome day!
Here's what I wrote: "Having spent two years in [my current role] with [my company], I delved more into financial and data analysis, and now I am ready for next step in my career." This is my starting point and I ended up writing three sentences relating to the position in question and some of the employers values.
I got this question last summer when I interviewed for my current employer. I somehow already knew the principle about not talking negatively about a previous employer in interviews, so I had thought ahead of time how I would want to answer this question if it came up. (Most of my other job changes had been pretty straightforward circumstances like relocating to a new state or graduating and wanting to seek out something that used my degree.) So I said something along the lines of, "My current job has me juggling multiple roles and I want to get back to doing just x, because that is what my degree is in and that's what I'm passionate about." Apparently it worked! Stumbled onto a similar channel within the last few weeks and have just been eager to save up tips for future learning even though I'm not job hunting anymore. 😊😊🌺 🌺
I have a phone screening in 4 hours for a job /career change I really want. I'm not one to choke in interviews (but I'm not too arrogant to go into an interview blindly) your videos are informative, concise, to the speak, and your speaking/presentation skills are a 10/10.
@@chelseymelaa thanks. I got the job. got offered a few interviews with other companies too :) took the job that seemed best for me. (management loved/loves me, they gave me a tour of the place before I had to make a decision)
1:48 it's not complicated at all. If you don't get a raise or promotion within one year you find a job with higher pay. Wanting more money is literally my only motive for getting a new job.
Thank you so much for your valuable advice and I've subscribed after watching multiple your videos! I've been applying them into my recent interviews, and I've gained a lot more confidence using your techniques! For this video, I have a question: in scenario 3, what to do if the interviewer keeps digging the reasons? Such as "what opportunities you've been looking for in your current job that you were limited?" or I also got questions that the interviewers ask for exact amount of marketing budget you were working with which is a lot less than their budget scope? Really would love to know your insights! And do you also have videos on interview tips with skip/department head series? Thank you!!!
I worked for a company that went out of business. I still had an HR person tell me I must of ruffled some feather. I now won't be an interview if I have to talk with anyone in HR.
I left my job because I was seeking new opportunities and learn new skills. OK, I've been applying for jobs where I already have the necessary skills..I won't be learning anything new but hopefully improving existing skills. How to put that. Please, could you tell me how and where do you learn the vocabulary to use in job interviews. I've read many books but can't retain this way of talking. English is not my first language.
you found what you are good at and you want to hone in or drill into that existing skill set and you would love to use your ability to improve their whatever it is.
"One Sentance" I'm ready to grow, and am currently working for a smaller company, so an equally interesting, but larger company, such as yours is the natural next step in my career.
@@mugovemashingaidze7374 I can provide my perspective and then you can tailor it to your own style as needed. What are the questions you're working on? Questions for you, or questions you have for the interviewer?
The pandemic helps a lot. I'm saying "the pandemic forced me to revaluate my priorities and I realized I needed to find a new opportunity that aligned with my new goals"
great video! loved it! could you provide a smart way to answer why you left an extremely toxic workplace... I mean she was literally anthrax toxic to everybody! she was going around looking for trouble! thank you!
How about this response if I resigned suddenly: "I was brought onboard with ABC company for the role of Software Engineer II, and my tasks include adding new features, and fixing bugs, but I was also given the additional task of testing the changes using Specflow and Unit Testing, which are required before pushing the changes into the project before deployment. However, I couldn't have the changes be approved, because I needed to show proof to the approvers that my changes pass the test case in unit testing and Specflow, and that takes a majority of my day, which makes me less productive in my work, and I felt that it's time for me to go look for something else, so I resigned from ABC company, and now I'm looking for a new opportunity where I can be more productive in finishing my tasks, and I do believe that XYZ may be the best place to work at."
I was laid off from my last job due to business financial reasons, they reconstructed their admin team, however there were only 2 people including myself on the admin team and we were both laid off, would that consider 100% of the team?
Hey just wanted to share my personal story! I applied for a job in July this year and after reading glassdoor interview reviews I found your name. Per the review I searched you on this platform and started watching all of your videos! Not only are you engaging but you explained things in a way that made interviewing easy! Which obviously is not a small feat! After 2 months of interviewing I did secure an offer and I started this week. This is not only a position in a completely new industry than I have ever worked, but it is also my first salaried job! Something I wasn't sure I would see with no college education. My new role already feels like a great fit after a week! AND I have been getting questions/advice requests from friends, and acquaintances, who have applied with this company and didn't get an offer. Once I had accepted the offer I realized that this company is not an easy interviewing process and its very selective about who is offered any position. My confidence is 100% so through the roof and I am realizing that I am capable of more than I ever thought possible. Thank you for everything! I have no plans to continue job searching, but will still be watching because you make such an intimidating process interesting!!!
this is just what I needed to know! All of your videos are amazing! help me land my last role, unfortunatelly was not a good fit. Thank you for doing this keep it up!
What if you got fired because you screwed up? Wouldn't an honest confession of it show a potential new employer that you are honest and humble enough to admit it.
So I'm struggling a lot with this question. The current employer I am seeking to start working was actually a doctor of mine. He asked me several times during my routine visits about my job because he was my chiropractor. I occasionally let loose about long hour days and not really getting breaks (yes, while illegal I almost preferred skipping breaks because it was horrible catching back up after being gone an hour. It was still hard on the body). The receptionist and I became friendly and I have discussed with her a health issue I was having that was stress related due to work. So in a way, they know why I chose to leave, but at the same time I still want to make a good impression and not come across as a whiny quitter.
i mean how do you explain you left a job because of personal situations? i had a job i really liked, but was unfortunately driving way too long of a commute and being paid v low compared to most people in my industry. during this time, i had many losses in my family and out of the blue received an offer from a company i worked at in the past offering me more money, better work/life balance, and better pay. it took me a long time but i decided to do what was best for my mental health. now, i'm trying to get back out there and i have to jump through hoops to act like i'm a positivity robot and not human. i don't understand how i'm supposed to explain these things...
Hi I left my last job due to my husband got a job in other city. I had to move with my family to support them. This is the real reason I left my job. If I tell this reason is it make any Negative impact on me. How I can tell them about I relocated to support my family?
I left my previous job because my family and I are migrating to another country for better future of our daughter. So i was not able to continue working in that role due to the transition. I am now a stay-at-home-mum looking for an opportunity to return to workforce. :)
Hi there, Just wanted to thank you for this amazing chanel. I got a dream job as Customer Success Manager because of your tips and advises … thank you so much
What to do if you go straight to the final boss? Like instead of the usual two or three recruiter interviews you are supposed to go to, you end up interviewing the boss due to being referred to by someone in the company already? Honestly it felt odd because it was over the phone they had no resume on me and it was basically all word play.
Thank you Madeline (my mom's name) for your valuable tips, examples, ect. My extremely huge gap in my resume after a ~25 years career in the dental field I left the last job of 7 yrs because my boss was a pervert. One time he told me to stand up...to tell me I did a good job, then he spanked my bum in front of everyone. Another time he refused to give me a new cutting disc to cut porcelain, so then I cut my thumb really bad! I chose not to claim L&I and sue him because in some professions the word gets around. I feared that another employee wouldn't hire me because of a law suit. I ended up leaving anyway because I had carpal tunnel syndrome from my years at my career. So I should leave out my issues with my carpal tunnel? When I left I started going to college to change my career, half way through the program my elderly mom was ill and had to move in with me (for 4 years). I was planing on going back to college but then my dad got cancer. Needless to say I couldn't go back because of my responsibilities. Even after my parents passed I still have an even longer gap in my resume...my fault. I REALLY need to get back to work but feel like I need professional help with my huge gap. What should a person do when they have a creepy boss like mine? No HR so no telling what he could say. I have longevity in all my few jobs in life.🌺🍀🍀🍀🍀🌻
If they ask about if you are interviewing at other companies what should you say? I am starting to learn honesty is not the best policy... I told them I only had 11 different companies scheduled that week. I am am mid level sales rep. A salesman's job is to sell themself to as many people as possible as fast as possible! Their response to me looked like they just got hit by a car? I'm kinda confused, did they think I was married to them the second I saw a job posting??? Should I say I only applied to them??? That would literally be the opposite of what a trained salesperson is trained to do... It's Monday and got 5 more interviews scheduled for this week, but I anticipate getting a few more new ones, and kinda want to apply to maybe 20 more in case something doesn't feel right in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. round interviews...
I quit 4 jobs because of toxic( work sabotage, harassment), workplace. All of them were short ( 4 months maxi ) since I would quickly realise that it would turn sour... and in between those there are gaps more less long. Needless to say that this is really hard to storytell, however, quitting was the best thing. Respect and dignity and security at work is bare minimum, if not .. well, better stay jobless and find someone else.
How does that work for a job you were at for 15yrs within a global company. What is the best way to say you left that company for a smaller company. My company has an algorithm system that decides who to reject for a job and who to send their resume to for the hiring manager. My dept is a deadend and hasn't hired anyone knew in 7 years. I've must have applied to 300 jobs and only gotten 5 interviews. They routinely have hiring freezes for a year at a time every couple of years. What's the best way to explain to a small company when they ask why am I leaving such a massive company? Haven't left yet but I'm burnt out and ready for a positive change.
Hi - I could really use some advice- I relocated my role could not be remote, that was easy - then I had a role for 7 Months, Shockingly the owner passed away - business closing - I'm uncertain know how to verbalize that - should I leave that off my resume? If so, I will have a 7 Month gap. Any advice would be SO appreciated --
What I can answer if I was hire for a contract to hire and now my contract is being extended because the company is down but I decide that I would prefer continuing my search
Ok so, I was terminated, but rehireable. I have applied back to the same company 7 diff times and continue getting generic rejection emails claiming they are continuing with other candidates that more closely match qualification requirements. I have worked for them for over 5 yrs and had 1 incident occur but it was a system issue that affected me. I have reached out to the HR individual by email with no results. Any advice?
I really hate to ask this but I'm so lost on how i should respond to this when I've had to leave almost half of my jobs because of s*xual harassment. My first job was so bad it ended in going to court because i was a minor... please help I've been so nervous about this coming up that I just stopped putting those jobs on my resume
But, for example they ask you the same question. But, you are not in any of those situations and you just want 2 jobs and they keep asking you the same question: Why did you leave your last job? So, how to respond this question in this case?
One sentence! I left my last employer because there was a lot of change going on in our department, division, with our comp, and in the industry as a whole with new legislation, and I was looking for a change as well, so I pursued a new job.
I like your vibe but the main things that candidate should do is be confident and tell that , Company has bene rerstructured so I was looking for the direction I was.
