Many gained land from their axis occupiers in World War 2. The Dutch did not. So why?

The tiny bit of land that the dutch kept, known as Duivelsberg (or devil's mountain) consists mostly of forest, the only buildings that are there present day is a tiny campsite as well as a pancake restaurant. So technically, the Netherlands just annexed pancakes from Germany.

Fun Fact: Germany and the Netherlands have had a border dispute for centuries, at the mouth of a river called the Ems. This river lies between the province of Groningen and the region of East Frisia (which is in Lower Saxony). This border dispute was only settled in 2014.

The southern bit of returned land, Selkant and Tuddere, was built up by the dutch govt as a suburb for the nearby city of Sittard. So, most people in that municipality still live close to it while most of the rest is farmland. Also, the demograpics of this municipality is to this day quite weird and diverse; not only a lot of dutch and germans but also a lot of cultures from other coldwar-era NATO countries. I'm guessing this is probably because of the nearby NATO base near Geilenkirchen and the old important NATO regional headquarters in/near Maastricht (which was partially situated in caves underneath it, very cool! Pictures of it look really interesting, a lot of oldddd computers and other technical equipment and american cave-street names)

The answer is very simple, if they had ceded territory it would cease to be de facto the 'low countries', and a space-time distortion would be formed. To avoid what would be the beginning of the end of humanity, it is that they preferred that coherence continue, and that they continue to be the 'low countries'.

One way the Dutch got compensation from Germany was by seizing property and assets from German enemy citizens living in the Netherlands. Basically anyone with a german passport was declared an enemy, so also Jews and innocent families. for those interested see: Besluit Vijandlijk Vermogen (E133). The dutch also deported many germans as part of operation black tulip, often also many innocents. It is a part of the Dutch national history that is often overlooked.
@dw620
@dw620 2 года назад
Thanks for noting this... Much is conveniently "overlooked", unfortunately, such as the scale of quite how many ethnic German civilians were refugees looking for new homes after being expelled from the East (14,000,000, give or take, minus the million or so who died en route...).
@rickvugts1242
@rickvugts1242 2 года назад
@@dw620 I recently wrote my thesis on the topic and was fascinated by the topic. Although in the period it is understandable that people felt hate towards "the German enemy", that doesnt make it right to target innocent civilians solely based on nationality. That was always something that bugged me about the ww2 memory history: the lack of acknowledgment of the (post) war suffering of German citizens. Your point about German refugees is correct, but too often overlooked... two wrongs dont make a right

Related fact: When the Czechoslovak government seized the property of "ethnic Germans" after the war, they took some land that had belonged to the royal family of Liechtenstein, despite that country having been neutral. Not - entirely - related, but there is a very strong, persistent urban legend regarding the not so great English (or Dunglish) a lot of Dutch politicians spoke at the time (and some still do). This one revolves around a former minister of foreign affairs, Joseph Luns. It is said that while on a diplomatic mission to the US, mister Luns had a meeting with John F. Kennedy. During a more informal moment in the meeting Kennedy asked "Mr. Luns, what are your hobbies?" to which poor mister Luns enthusiastically replied "I fok horses!" (fokken meaning 'to breed' in Dutch). An exasperated Kennedy replied "Pardon?!" to which mr. Luns even more enthusiastically replied "Yes! Paarden!" (Paarden being Dutch for horses, and considering Kennedy's twang ' probably close to how he pronounced it as well. 'Pah'den?!'). Suffice to say, sometimes I am not all that surprised we Dutch keep missing all the truly important EU and UN seats and appointments. An important bit of information for any lover of history or, like me, the sense of humor of a 12 year old. Or both!

Germany suffered a lot and lost a lot of territory after both wars and it disgusts me that minor nations such as the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania and Poland try to profit from a victory that does not even belong to them. The Dutch state had no historical ties to Munster or Hamburg, and neither did the Poles have ties to Breslau (Wroclaw) or Stettin (Szczecin) and many other east German areas. We didn't split up France after they failed at Waterloo either.

I'm conflicted in this regard. I'm more European and think we should intensify our joining within the EU. Therefore today I hardly think about a region being German, Dutch, Czech or Polish. And I'm glad the Nazis were defeated. On the other hand I become sad to read about the history of Königsberg and other cities especially considering it is all a result of the great war. I'm pretty sure the empire would have subdued the fascist movement. I'm recently into genealogy and it's strange to see all those German cities where some of my ancestors were born doesn't exist anymore. All the people were expelled and the cities renamed.

@@B_B463 what makes a country deserve land? The Germans invaded the NL for no real reason other then territorial gain. They bombed Rotterdam and looted the economy leaving the country in a deprived state without the Dutch having done anything to them. I think the Dutch would have deserved some compensation for that (all be it symbolic), and if it couldnt be money, than land would be the second best. That being said, one person doing something wrong does not neccesarilly allow someone else to also do wrong. That is childrens logic, and I am glad that no real land was given as it would have caused even more problems. But I do not disagree that the NL did not deserve territorial consessions because they had a small army even though they suffered more than for example the US. They did not have a large military because they never wanted war, and maybe that makes them more 'deserving' of any land than the Axis or Allied powers, even though we are still greatly thankful for the latter to liberate us.

@@boy_becauseofyou it was good the nazis were expelled from lands that were not theirs, but the Germans should not have been kicked out of the lands that were. What hardly anyone knows is that in 1963 a small piece of Dutch territory of about 20 hectares that has always been Dutch has ceded to Germany for the construction of the A3 motorway from Oberhausen to the German/Dutch bordercrossing Elten/Bergh. The evidence that the Netherlands gave a small piece Dutch territory to Germany shows topographical maps of the area southwest of the Dutch village Megchelen from before and after 1963. The A3 that was planned there through a small piece of Dutch territory there appears to be entirely on German territory after 1963. The about 20 hectares Dutch territory (8 km northwest of Rees) going to Germany for 125 hectares German territory east of Nijmegen to the Netherlands was as the 1963 final border correction a good deal for the Dutch.

In the end, being Dutch, I'm glad these areas were never given to Germany. They weren't historically ours, it would've caused many, mostly innocent, citizens to be displaced from their ancestral grounds. I'm from a similar region, Noord-Brabant. These cultural differences never resolve, and being a minority group it's frustrating little attention is given to such differences in the long run. It probably also would've been a big cause of issues, friction and displeased people. We could've been a bit more economically powerful, but in the end, life's amazing here with or without the land. It's mostly Poland who got a big area, but compared to the suffering THAT country had to go through, ours was thankfully relatively unaffected. With the majority of cities there bombed to the ground, they atleast deserved an area from where they could rebuild the country from.
