Why didn't we notice this before? It's been an up and down week!

It's been a week of ups and downs! We get to grips with our reclaimed flooring and we encounter one big problem that we can't believe we didn't notice before! We've also got to move the hefty stove before we can continue any further.
With the flooring, as the boards are secondhand, each one needs cleaning before it can be laid. The tongue and grooves all need checking over and there are a fair few tatty boards. Hopefully, it will be worth it for the character, look and environmental benefits of going pre-owned!
It's not all plain sailing with the boat build. Slower progress than we hoped and hiccups along the way mean emotions are running high this week!

Silly little tip ~ Why not place an old blanket or whatever inside the bath tub, and place all of your tools in there. Then you'll always know there the tools are when you need them, including the extra blades, screws, etc. In other words always, always have a designated place for all of the needed tools and other items. Being organized will save you precious minutes, even hours. Your friend, 'Tool-less Tilly' 😂🛠

As commendable your enthusiastic endeavours the big issue is if the hull steel has not been shot blasted inside and outside before protection application then mill scale left on the steel holds moisture that eventually pits rust through. To compound this physics event spray foam insulation adds moisture. Builders of boats don't address these basic build faults because of cost and they want boats to rust so they can build more.

I really like to make my porridge cold the evening before. By that I mean I add my oats to a container and I add the water/milk so it can soak in overnight. I’ll also add sultanas cause I like them to be fat and juicy 🙂, and various nuts, cinnamon nutmeg and seeds to my liking. I will add any fruit in the morning. Before I add the fruit I give the soaked mixture a really good stir - this seems to make the porridge extra creamy which I love. I’ll then put it on the stove top to warm up, add berries and/or banana and grated apple - yum. In the past I would make a big sealed container of soaked oats so that it could last for a few days in the fridge for easy use. I’m not ashamed to say that I would eat porridge at all times of the day and night. What’s not to love? The soaking overnight and giving it a really good stir prior to cooking and adding fruit really makes all the difference I think. Reminds me of porridge I had as a kid - warm, creamy with plump sultans etc. Yum yum piggies bum ❤ I know what I’m going to be making soon. 🙂🐿🌈❤️

The roller skates are a great idea, why did we not think of that! And yeh, normally I do use a scrap piece of flooring to tap... Sometimes though there's not one around and a little gentle nudge with the mallet is all that's needed. The tongues are fairly tatty anyway so it doesn't make a huge difference!

Have laid a lot of reclaimed parquet flooring, cleaning is a bore. We used to clean all the flooring first and then lay it. That way each you can concentrate on just laying the floor, greater selection of boards to chose from, and less cutting. Sounds pedantic but it speeded up the process. Enjoying the videos, hats off for kitting it out yourselves.

Hi! That bath will cause you a lot of problems in the future with water going down the side, i think your best option is to forget the bath and go for a shower it will give you more height clearance for a shower head, also you will be able to seal it properly with sealant, i have seen too many narrowboat's with rotten floors due to a bath being fitted. another thing is water consumption, 1 bath full of water = an empty water tank and a visit to the water point to fill up. Loving the use of reclaimed flooring, seems to be coming on nicely 🙃🙃🙃
@thistinylife
@thistinylife Год назад
I think you might be right! But we shall see. Our original boat has a small bath and we had to completely replace the flooring in there. Water was getting beneath the vinyl and everything was rotten. It seems to be ok now but we also make sure to have a shower curtain that pretty much wraps entirely around the tub... Water consumption, we're quite lucky that our winter mooring spot has a water point in easy reach.. So the plan was for the occasional luxurious bath haha!

I was cracking-up with the violin music (empathy) portion... LOL! A really good podcast is called: Sentientism, with Jamie Woodhouse; & yesterday, I started an audio book you may like: The Lost Rainforest of Britain by Guy Shrubsole (I read books mostly, but enjoy audio books too, for when I'm doing chores or other things I'd rather not be doing!). Anyway, The Lost Rainforest, etc.is very interesting; it's about the fact that the UK should, and did at one point, make-up what are temperate rainforests on earth (there are a few on the west coast of the Americas, one in New Zealand, etc. in total, 1% of earth is a temperate rainforest). 20% of UK should be and was a rainforest. Now, there are crumbs left... it's very interesting anyway! Good luck with the floor!! And good job moving that heavy stove!! x

Next time you move the stove, take one of your floorboards and put it under both back legs. Take another floorboard and put it under both front legs. That’s a total of two Borge. Now you get to pick up the end like you did on the video and put a small pipe under it and roll it halfway back under the stove. Take a second pipe and put it under the edge of the stove so it theaters level on them. Now you can roll the stove from one end to the other but you will have to keep moving one of the pipes from back to front. It’ll work best if you can have three or four pipes to do this with. PVC sprinkler pipe will work or electrical. Metal conduit will really work nice. Good luck.

If that stove weighed 300kg there is no way on earth you could have lifted one end, as that would have been 150kg, sorry kid you have been duped, or you are trying to dupe everyone else.

Hey! You've made me question this now... But having googled the model - Esse Ironheart it comes up as 370kg. We've stripped the doors off and the cast iron plate on the top to make it a little lighter www.esse.com/wood-fired-cook-stoves/ironheart-wood-fired-cook-stove/

@@thistinylife many thanks for getting back to me, yes I appreciate the original weight, however you stripped out all the internal bars and fire bricks as well as doors and the heavy top, you were probably left with only 200kg ( which is still very heavy ), so lifting half of it was only 100kg, as you can see on the video you actually were standing on your toes not even flat footed, so yes it was lighter, however it was still a very massive task for you and your girl to achieve, and I am glad that there are still youngsters about who are willing to do this kind of work, you should both be proud of yourselves for what you are achieving. Have you thought about removing the Bath feet and putting the waste trap beneath the floor, this would give you more height for the shower. Keep it up you are doing well.

Podcast - “The Anthropocene Reviewed” written & read by John Green. N.B I realise this vlog, and by extension your request for recommendations is a year or more old, BUT, I really think that you both could enjoy the “Anthropocene Reviewed”. At least I hope you do. Either way, thank you. 🙂🐿🌈❤️

Thank you!! On reading a few comments, i think the human horse method should have been replaced with some sort of roller blades on each leg of the stove 😅 Still... It worked! Haha Thank you for the recommendation, we shall check him out!
