Same reason why the average British person has felt poor for centuries; the wealth is held by those in the capital. If they moved country we would plummet down the list.

Meh, I don't make a crazy good salary £28k, but I don't feel poor, but that might have to do that I am more than happy living in a small town on the outskirts of a big city than closer to the city centre, so my money goes further. Also I'm naturally pretty frugal , minimalist and I have no debt. Also living in the north

US real wages have grown 10% from the 1970s. French real wages have grown 130%. If you leave out the top 10% and then look at GDP per capita, the numbers are shocking. Inequality and monopolistic corporations are killing the United States.

US is like all of Europe in 1 country so you need to look at each state depending on the economy, cost of living and growth. For example I live in Washgitnon state and average wages have grown around 100% between 1980 and 2021. However a state with mostly farming as the main industry might have lost income due to automation and population leaving over time. It is very complicated to look at all of the US as the data can be very misleading.

Nailed it - excellent. I’m sick of the BBC endlessly bleating on about the UK’s ‘cost of living crisis’ as if we are unique in experiencing high food, housing and service prices. My perception is that food prices are far higher in the US - and in France for that matter. Equally, ‘crisis’ implies a short-term passing event - it isn’t - this is the new reality.

We print so much money, destroy our value of the dollar, artificially inflate our assets; now a majority of the country can’t even afford basic housing.. My grandma was a janitor and bought a 3 bed 2 bath house, now the only people who can afford basic necessities are people with STEM degrees & union trade careers. The average house 2 years ago was 200K now it’s 450K & average salary is 53K.. this very bad & not sustainable…

I don't feel poor. I live comfortably within my means. I own a house that I can easily afford, drive moderately priced cars even though my bank was willing to loan me much more money. Pay for good health insurance a save as much as I can. I think that too many American, and probably Brits too live too close to the edge of what they can afford. Obviously it all begins with a stable job and income. In my case back in 2005 when I purchased my current house, I wanted the larger house with the creek running through my property. Could have afforded it but still went with one that I could more easily pay for. Good thing too, because remember just a few years later we had the 2008 financial crash and my company (Boeing) really suffered. Even today, I can afford a Lexus but drive a Toyota. This allowed me to pay for some of my sons college expenses. He graduated in June. ♥

I’ve taken a close look at what I spend and cut out anything that’s unnecessary or wasteful. Cleared all debt other than my mortgage which I can easily afford. I spend about 65% of my net income. I am not penny pinching, I’m just keeping a close eye on what I spend as to avoid going into debt.

Yup…that’s the way to do it. USA baby 👊 Get a decent job in a good field, work your way up, save your money, basic investments, cash out comfortable. I started off poor but had no intention of staying there.

A lot of the perception delta is that people probably don’t understand that housing is excluded from inflation calculations. The fact is if your arm is hurting from reaching for your wallet, you’ll be blaming “inflation” and feeling poorer regardless.

I hope you had a copy of Supertramp - Breakfast In America with you Tejvan 🎹🎷🎧 I've noticed food prices are starting to level a bit. Just some of the brand leaders ripping folk off. I've got used to higher food prices now. To be fair I have thought for a long while that some food products must be subsidised elsewhere to make them viable. For example tinned rice pudding at 20p. Makes a very cheap pudding or even breakfast! Milk needed to go up. So undervalued. Why folk expect milk for less than fizzy pop is beyond me.

But if you divided all this richness by 50 (the number of states) it wouldn’t be that impressive I think.

Inequality is what drives down life expectancy. Especially in us. People cant afford treatment. And they dnt want to go in debt. So they risk to get worse.

I expect Americans feel under financial stress because of rising taxes which you didn't mention. They are fleeing Democratically run places like New Your and California in their droves because of high taxes.
