Bull bars are named kængurugitter (kangaroo bars) in Denmark and were mounted to trucks on Scandinavian routs to protect the vehicle at collisions with moose, bears or reindeers.

The same thing happens in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA. There is so much wildlife such as deer, moose and even black bears that most commercial vehicles have the bars in front, even ambulances.

The U.S.A. had the tractor- trailers with a power dolly back in the 1950's.Back then on the West Coast many of the big haulers like CF ( Consolidated Freightways) used a power dolly to help the doubles and triples climb the mountain highways. The horsepower and torque was not like engines now. The power dolly used a Cummins V- 6 engine.

Farmers have used them.. probobly since about the same time (or even earlier) with the power outlet from the tractor powering the trailer. Most tractors, even fairly old one, have both rev and speed based outlet.

We used to call them Bong Bars in Alice Springs, when I was a Mechanic on the Trucks, 20 years ago. We also called the Aborigines Bongs..........The used to sleep in road in winter, because the tarmac was warm..........You can work the rest out yourself. I cleaned some real stinking guts from the bar and underside of trucks, it don't half start to smell bad real quick in the heat.

My uncle and his trucker mates had bull bars on their prime movers back in the fifties only they were mostly home made out of steel, my uncle made a custom fit bar for his petrol powered R190 inter and remember him telling me as a kid that it paid for itself in the 1st week in the absence of damage to his rig on the Hume highway on the Melbourne to Sydney run

@ 1.55 Bull bars come in all shapes and sizes They are made from a different profiles. Round, Rectangular, Square, Tapered box, and That weird profile that Volvo use. The are also made in steel and stainless steel, as well as printed plastic. Most truckies are regular folk and not some kind of heartless monster like the media would have us believe, and feel very bad when they run over animals. No one likes to see road full of road kill. but swerving to miss an animal is usually just not an option. Also it's often a bad ending for the truck as well and a large animal passing under your vehicle at speed often results in damage to steering, brake and electric lines, wheels and tires. It is commonly thought the a startled animal will naturally run for it's home when in danger which is why a lot of them will actually cross in front of you at very short notice.. ( often less than 3 meters )
@Hattonbank
@Hattonbank 2 года назад
You see a lot of them in Oz, but having driven there in a car as a tourist way out the country, it is the car driver who is most at risk, not a big truck. The amount of dead animals on the roadside shows how bad the problem of wild animals hitting vehicles can be. Hitting a Roo at 50mph in a big truck is one thing, imagine doing so at night in a car, the damn thing could not only crumple your car, but land on it and go through the windscreen. It's no wonder they advise motorists to avoid driving after dusk. "Macho" SUV drivers here in the UK used to have them on the front of their vehicles, it made thm look more rugged I suppose. The only thing they did was crumple and split pedestrians wide open, particularly children. Fortunately they were banned some years ago. Apart from a few small deer, the only wild animals we have here are after midnight when the pubs and bars close.

Its really simple. They are driving to the outback. For thousands of miles. One kangaroo destroy the front of a truck. The engine is cooled by water. The water cooler for the engine is broken. The aussie trucker is lost. Thats the reason why they need it. And they are on the road with 2 and three trailer. They cant stop immidiatly

Why do Aussie trucks have bull bars? Are you freakin serious? Wait till you hit a roo, or a wombat or a cow travelling at 100kph out in the bush somewhere, then you’ll have your answer. I’ve got a heavy bull bar on the front of my old Ute. It’s just for a little mor insurance.

Kangaroo’s can do a lot of damage to a car so many cars, trucks and most semi’s in Australia have bull bars. You don’t want to be stranded far away from help in a vehicle that can’t run after hitting a Roo.

fk the regulations , let the Politicians and regulation makers experience hitting a kangaroo while driving at 100 - 160 KM h , then I bet you they will ask for more bullbar guards for these magnificent trucks , in USA a Deer can destroy the Truck with a single hit , imagine hitting a kangaroo which is way stronger than a deer and built more rigid by nature .

Bullbar is a more recent name for roobar. Anyone who has driven at night in outback Australia will tell you that these bars are vital on modern vehicles if you want to live. Depending on where you are, there are pigs, 'roos, horses, cattle, deer and camels that wander around and get drawn by the headlights at night. Up north there are even water buffalo.
