Don’t forget that in economy that upon instructions you are supposed to adopt the brace position by resting your head on your arms on the seat in front of you (unless you can’t reach - such as in exit row). So that is what reduces the impact not the smaller distance meaning less acceleration. Your body is not speeding up - it’s already travelling at the speed of the plane.
Buissness class and first class do the same brace as first row/emergency door roe seats its just there for added safety and so their precious expensive screens don't get smashed
The flight attendants request to put the shoulder harness for take-off and landing. During the flight they usually don't bother even when the seat belt sign is on.
Not quite, NS Dan. Angled seats are required to have shoulder harnesses due to the somewhat sideways position if thrown forward. I can’t think of an airline that doesn’t put them on all business class seats if there are any angled seats in the cabin, even if technically not required on the seats that are facing straight forward. Otherwise, if it were a case of distance to the seat in front of you, shoulder harnesses would be required on quite a few economy seats that have several feet of empty space in front of them, such as those at doorways and some bulkhead seats. However, there are absolutely safety requirements that consider force absorption by seat backs in front of you in all seats.
The simple answer is all seats must retain the passenger and minimise injury at decelerations of 15G. For some seats a lap belt will not pass the test. This is why some business seats have air bags instead. HTH.
Air bags are hella expensive. No way would ANY airline ever implement that on every seat. And if it was installed the amount of false deployments would be insane. Or there would have to be a system to only deploy if someone is sitting there
That’s because the new business seats are facing forward at an angle to maximize space. Old business class did not have this because they all just face forward. Old business seats were more like a lazy recliners. Now they make it flat, but angled and took away some shoulder width. I like the older recliner configuration better.
I just recently flown Lufthansa first class, they also have shoulder harnesses, but without them, good luck hitting a seat infront of u since they are 2.2 meters away.
Yeah, and this is one of the reasons why it's so important to bring your seat back up during takeoff and landing as of the crucial moments of flight. We don't ask passengers to raise their seats and fasten their seatbelt because we want to frustrate passengers it's for safety reasons.
I was literally thinking about this a couple of days ago during my flight from Miami to London. Thanks for explaining it 🙂 for some reason, I thought it was for more comfort
This is such a strange coincidence for me, I was on a A380 yesterday from DXB -> LHR and was wondering why the staff seats had the harnesses when we didn't xD
Generally the staff seats are placed with a good view of the interior so they have nothing in front of them, if I were to guess, minor head injury of passengers is less of a concern than minor head injury of trained staff who can help save lives in an emergency.
Makes a lot of sense! That's also why you have to wear the harness only during take-off and landing in these phases you have a significant forward and backward movement. During cruise it is mainly up and down, so the harness won't make a difference then
They have a thing called airbag seatbelts. Basically when it detects impact the airbag from inside the seatbelt inflates absorbing your impact. So that's why some seats have a leather cover on them and are hard
and you wanna know something that is making your flights cost far more, With these types of belts they come in multiple parts, one parts keeps failing. However, the manufactures refuse to sell it separately. so then airlines have to buy the entire assembly. Which which costs from about 300 to 1000 depending on the model. just so that they can replace one item, then then throw the rest of it away. since it is now, "incomplete" So that cost is added to the cost of tickets
If you want to see which seat Brands to have it they are the following Safran Optima Stelia Solstys & Symphony Rockwell Collins elements. The latter one is actually the manufacturer of the B-1 Lancer bomber. Therefore they actually make seats and combat aircraft. For some reason the Safran Sky Lounge/Cirrus doesn't have this even though it's supposed to have one. Flying between Hong Kong and Manila you will find out Thompson Vantage XL on Philippine Airlines has this style of belt. JPA Airtrek CX 2 or 3.
I was on JetBlue a few months ago and some of the Even More Space seats had the airbags. I think Delta’s A220 in first class has the airbags in the first row.
Ok but you can say the same for driving seat in car too, the danger is hitting your head with the steering wheel, (i know there is a air bag ), that's the same in economy the screen is the right in front of you. So yh business is worth more, yes they are thinking that. Oh, and about the speed you travelling the same speed as the plane no matter where you are, economy business or 1st 😅, its basic science
It’s true. Doesn’t matter what class your in the airline pays your family the same when the plane crashes and you die. $0. They don’t even refund the ticket.
How are all of his videos like so good and informal and funny at the same time? Like if you go back to some of his old videos he makes the best jokes ever!
But your head does not accelerate at all! It just keeps moving as inertia dictates, while the plane around you -seats included - undergo potentially massive deceleration.
