Why Do Catholic Priests Wear Black? | The Catholic Talk Show 

I'm rather fond of seeing a priest in a cassock! The black pants and black shirt with the collar says "I'm working" vs cassock says "I'm working for." I know that's not necessarily true either way for priests, some very holy priests wear black pants and shirts, like I said I'm just rather fond. God Bless all our priests!

Love seeing a priest or nun wearing their clerical or habits in public. I will always comment on how beautiful it is and thank them. It’s very centering and humbling.

I love black! I wear it all the time. There's nothing wrong with priests wearing black needless to say it's the coolest color!🖤

I miss seeing priests in traditional carb pre Vatican 2.

I'm glad you stand apart. I know where to go for spiritual help. God bless you all. Although a lay person I wear my crucifix which shows others where my heart is.

Black symbolizes the Priest’s death to the world and the collar around the neck shows that they are slaves to Christ and His Church. The white represents that in the midst of darkness in the world (the black garb) there is the light of Christ (white collar).

I absolutely love to see a priest in a cassock.

I honestly thought priests didn't wear collars/priestly garb outside of church because I was on the lookout for years for a Catholic priest (I wanted to ask some questions.) As a protestant, I was too intimidated to try to connect at a local church, and hoped I might "run into" one at an airport, grocery store, etc. Nope. Never saw a single one. I travel a lot domestically and at airports, I have seen what I presume were nuns (errrr...religious?), several Buddhist monks (orange sarongs) (they were very friendly and when I smiled as I walked by, they returned a beaming smile and a little bow) and once what might have been three orthodox priests (they had unusual hats?). Any way... the point of my comment...is that it is good when priests wear readily identifiable clothing for those of us trying to spot them out in the world. You know how when you are in trouble and you see a police uniform, there is an inner sigh of relief? (Sadly, that may no longer be true in all communities today. 😞) Maybe a better example, is a doctor's jacket when you are feeling bum - there is comfort that "here is someone who knows..." (Apologies for the long post - that's been bottled up for a while. lol)

Actually, black is all color. It absorbs all color. White is the absence of color since it reflects all color.

Black is traditional for mourning and renunciation. In my opinion we've lost the fundamental sign of black, the absence of color and attention-getting personal adornment. Ironic that it's now a kind of show-off statement.

White is the absence of color. Black is combination of all colors.

If I had been a diocesan priest I totally would have worn a cassock to the store. But I would have a Franciscan priest.

The joke was that a clergyman had asked a child why he wore the collar, and the child replied: "Because it kills fleas and ticks for up to six months!"

Has there ever been a show on how unfriendly Catholic parishes are? I am Catholic but I have attended services at other religions and generally the people are WAY more friendly and welcoming. They also didn't seem to be in such a BIG hurry to get out after the service. Also, Catholics do NOT sing the awful hymns that have become the norm in the last few decades. Sorry for posting this here, but I didn't see any where else to make the comment.

I think they should wear the collar out in secular society now. It reminds us that God is with us. Gives us hope. And we need that..... 🙏🏻✌🏻
