How about getting together with others like yourself and get a TNVR program going!?! Or, if you're like me, start small with a few at a time... Your county or city should offer programs that are really cheap. My county only charges $10 per cat, and will rent traps for a refundable $50 a week, although, I bought two traps (from Home Depot online, with free delivery) to keepat home to use when I need them.

@@noninoni9962 My mother, her secretary, and I had done a TNR program in my old town. My 3 year old, Simba, is actully the very first stray we managed to capture as a 3-4 month old kitten. We were working pretty hard to get the population under control and had shelters with heating pads and heated water bowls set up under both porches for the winter. But then, one day, we heard a pretty long series of gunshots (not totally uncommon in middle of nowhere) and we never saw the majority of them again. We suspect some twat went a picked them off one by one, but there wasn't a damn thing we could do about it.

I'll never forget being rudely woke up by my cat spilling a glass of water all over my head. I'd left it on my headboard to take medicine with in the middle of the night. It didn't matter how fresh his water in his dish was, or how clean the water bowl was. You just couldn't leave a glass of water unattended or he'd go for a drink of it.

Non-whisker-safe bowls tend to have cats meow to fill the center of the bowl while they ignore the kibble on the borders... no need for knowing WHY, we have a behaviorist proof. That cat PREFER bowls which don't annoy their whiskers in bowls which are non-whisker-safe is just the next logical step.

I feed my cat by putting the food in weird things like jars, small boxes, etc. and my girl pulls the pieces out with her paw. It probably wouldn't be a solution for every cat, but enrichment could be a solution for whisker-unfriendly bowls. Just get rid of the bowl! :3 To underscore the important point of the original post though: if it's not working for your cat, fix it. If it works for your cat, it's fine.

That makes a lot of sense! I've noticed my cat locating food crumbs with her whiskers, and I've also noticed she often leaves food at the bottom of the bowl. I always think, come on, dive in, but hearing about whisker stress, it makes total sense now that it's not comfortable for her! Thanks for opening my mind, Jackson!

Hey Jackson, have you ever discussed Jake Perry and how so many of his cats live such long lives? He's cared for Creme Puff, a cat that lived to 35, and his other cats regularly live well into their late 20's & early 30's, according to his vet. It would be amazing to have detailed info on what he does to keep these cats in such great shape for so long!

One of my cats only drinks from the tap. Even though I don't run the water at full force, she manages to get her face in there so much that water will run down her face to the point where it starts to rain from her whiskers. It's so adorable! Especially when she has to remove her head from the tap long enough to shake it off.

I didn't even know about whiskers stress, but it makes sense. My cat always took her food out of the bowl and never ate anything in the corners. She only ate from the middle. So, eventually, I put her food on a plate and put that plate on a tray for when the food got pushed out. She stopped screaming at me to fill the hole in the middle of her food. Looking back, yeah, she definitely had whisker stress.

I didn’t know cats’ vision was so bad up close. This makes my Eponine, of blessed memory, more understandable. I’d play with her with a laser and she’d “lose” it when it got close to her. Since it has no substance, her whiskers couldn’t pick it up. My Maleficent doesn’t seem to have that problem, though.

I think Jackson has mentioned in a video before, I just don't remember which one sorry! But I think I remember that you should'nt move your stuff and furniture around too much and that most cats can actually live with it very well. Like described in this video they can use their whiskers to orientate themselves and also their great hearing and smell. Also most blind cats still enjoy playing, you just need to use toys that wrinkle or jingle.

@@ItsBecauseImBored Thanks! we know about the furniture, he's been blind for almost two years now. We aren't exactly sure but we think he got in a cat fight and his eye got scratched and infected with some weird bacteria. It spread to the other. But the first eye has a major cataract. He is happy but meows a lot at night now.

Put floor runners down leading to the places he needs to go to (food, water, litterbox, your lap, bed etc) so that he can just follow the runners. Most plastic ones have a textured surface that the cat can feel. Cats have sensitive toes (like our finger pads). One of my cats had a stroke that left her blind for awhile. I noticed that she followed the runners to get around. The advantage was that there was nothing for her to bump into as long as she stayed on the runners.

Well this explains a lot about my cat missing a treat lying right next to her. While I'm here, it would help a lot to get some tips about getting a cat used to living in a house that already has a dog. I'm in a peculiar situation where I might need to live there a few days a month and I need to bring the cat with me. I figure it's a little like with two cats, with making a basecamp for the newcomer, feeding the two animals on each side of a closed door at regular times, then replacing the opaque barrier with a see-through one and continuing the synchronized feeding, and eventually removing the barrier? The dog is friendly with everything and everyone, but he's young and excitable so he'll need training to keep calm around the cat as well. That's about all I know, so any tips are welcome! I'm trying to build a solid plan so my cat doesn't get too stressed out.

Ashley Danielle in the event that Jackson doesn’t cover this subject in the near future, I just want to help you out with your situation if I can. Your cat’s skin is sensitive as is our own, and for that reason I never have used wire brushes on a cat’s fur, just in case that’s the kind of brush you have. You could check out Jackson’s merchandise for grooming aids to see what he recommends, as well. I have had many cats in the last 40+ years, & always have used a brush that has “nubbies” on the ends of the bristles, & brush in the direction that their fur lays. I started out the first grooming on a cat by petting & stroking my cat until she was purring & relaxed. With one kitty, I rubbed catnip on the brush & let her play with it for awhile before I ever used it on her fur. *The slow way is the fast way. *Always remember that rushing into or forcing your cat to tolerate brushing is a sure way to cause them to forever hate it.

Look for the Furminator. Available for different fur length, for cats or dogs. Though, some cats really dont like to get brushed, no matter what brush you use. But must say, the Furminator seems reasonably gentle to me. As someone said above, dont use wire brushes or other aggressive tools.

NOOOOOO!!!!! don't trim a cat's hair!! Make sure though, he/she's getting plenty of water, ESPECIALLY if you feed only kibble/dry food... I live in Florida, so I keep them in the a/c, then they go out into the Catico after it cools off in the evening... A few that I have with thick fur (undercoat) like laying in front of a box fan I keep running in the summer.

Orquidea Please(!) do not cut any hair from your cat. Don’t trim it, and especially don’t shave your cat! The reasons are that their fur keeps them cooler in the heat of summer, as well as warmer in the cold of winter. It’s their insulation against the elements. Please do not do this to your cat! The sun could cause their skin to become sunburned. Nature gave them their coat for survival reasons, so we should not interfere with their natural adaptations.

Keeping your cat indoors or in an enclosed part of your yard/garden may sound cruel or impossible, but Jackson has a couple of books to help your cat get all of the stimulation it needs inside the home where it’s safer for it and others. A term to google that will get you started on some ideas is ‘catify’ . It doesn’t have to mean a lot of expense, but it can help make your home ‘enough’ for your feline. Good luck!

Questions! We have cats at my work (animal hospital) that are victims of wildfires. Thier whiskers are mostly gone, their paw pads are burned and now bandage. How long before those whispers fall out and get replaced? Is there things that can be done to help them feel better, not having whispers? I know that thier pad of the paws help with temperature control and other sensation, i can only imagine how not only painful but disorienting it must be to have a lot of your natural kitty senses damaged. Is their ways to enrich thier kitty senses and life while healing?

I don't know what to do. I ask on Reddit, and they have no clue what they're talking about. They act like my cats or hostile and fighting. But they're not. The kitten just keeps jumping on the big cat. And this led the big cat to have a negative attitude whenever the kitten comes close. Basically, female cat was three years old when I got her a female kitten 10 weeks old. So for awhile, they got on well. Although, even since that early age, kitten would sort of gnaw or smack at cat. Which would anger cat. As the kitten got a bit older, she started pouncing on big cat. Even like in a predatory way, kitten would get into a sort of position like in the wild hiding in tall grass. And shaking her butt, followed by running out and pouncing on cat. So due to this behavior from the kitten, the cat now just sees kitten like a menace. And will growl when kitten comes close. They are no long as close as they used to be when kitten would sleep with cat.

I've had a couple dozen cats over the years and have only seen this twice, but it's a sincere question. In the event that a whisker gets bent, what is the right thing to do? Is it more troublesome for the cat to have a shorter whisker or a full length bent one?

I've had cats my entire life and now I have a Sphynx. He doesn't have any whiskers at all but he thinks life is a cirkus and doesn't have any problems whatsoever with his balance. He is a lot more intelligent than other cats I have had. If the whiskers takes that big part of the brain on regular cats, what does sphynx cats do whith that part?

I have a question. My cats whiskers curl inward. Some to the extent where they curl around and nearly touch his face. He is a Persian with a very smooshed nose. I had to cut a small piece off one once because it was literally growing up his nose. I think it bothers him when eating because his whiskers go in his food. How strange is this and can I do anything to help?

I can't ever think of anyone saying they would want to cut whiskers. But like on some kitten videos there are some pretty messed up people out there. Whenever I see a kitten put on top of a door wide open I don't see something funny, I see a psychopath trying to do something funny that turns my stomach. So those are the type of person who should never have a cat. Same with people who want to cut whiskers. Or putting them in human clothes.

Hi Jackson I live in Oregon and we just had some major fires that burned 3000 homes there’s many cats that survived but were badly burned. Veterinarians have donated their time and equipment to help these just located displaced cats and through Facebook they are finding their humans but the question I have is a lot of their whiskers have burned off do they grow back? Also a little funny my Himalayan cat girl totally was watching this video with me she was more interested when you waved your hands around then the other cats in the video.Question do cats actually see the TV or screen and do they recognize that there’s other cats funny question I know thanks

Think you have gone over it Jackson but people who de-claw cats would be akin to chopping off a person's fingers.

What about whiskers that shed? ...the random whiskers you find on the carpet. Do they grow back? Do whiskers grow back if they are cut? I adopted a cat that has a whisker that looks like it was cut, is that going to effect him?

Jackson, my cat Yuna went through a stage of scratching herself from dermatitis and she lost one of her whiskers above her eye that never grew back. Is that ok?

It could also be possible, with the whisker stress trials, that the cat approached the new thing first (as they do) & found food there. Pretty sure that's what my cat did when I switched over to new things. mb?

My deceased husband had said at one time that he had heard that if a whisker fell of of cat that meant that they would die in the next couple of days. I’ve never heard that before or since. I’ve found a couple of whiskers on surfaces before and since but have only had a cat death months or years later. What is the scup?

My cat likes when I pet hair under his mouth behind the whiskers. Is that normal?? He seems to love it (closes eyes, purrs, lowers his head, etc.)

Jackson... 2 things one about whiskers.... is it okay for whiskers to fall out. I have a kitten and I noticed he had a whisker missing. I also had a cat before that he would fall out. The second thing is I have had a bunch of cats in the past. I had cats that could see very well in the dark. They could see tiny insects and spiders. I didnt think they were anymore special them the cats that didnt see the insects. I just figured the others were too lazy to care until the other cat started playing with the insects 🤣🤣🤣

In your opinion, Sir, if we happen to find a whisker on the floor, is that something to be concerned about? Do they regrow like fur/hair follicles?

Hi Jackson, We have two male cats roughly the same age. A small 7 pound Russian Blue, Periwinkle, and a bigger 16 pound shorthaired tabby Percival. I have just noticed that Percival has chewed the whiskers on Perwinkle on one side of his muzzle. They are not completely gone, but noticeably shorter. Normally they get along and sometimes play fighting. The odd time they are aggressive. When they are aggressive it is usually Periwinkle that will start the aggression and bite little tuffs of fur off Percival. He has never made bald spots or draw blood from Percival. I don't know if the chewing of the whiskers is retaliation for the biting of fur or not. Is there anything we can do to stop this?

We have two cats that are brothers from the same litter. They are two years old now but one constantly chews off the other ones whiskers. We cant figure out how to stop this behaviour other then seperating them permanently in different areas. Is this some kind of sign of dominance or something else?

I don't know if you'll see this comment Jackson, but if you do please help! I have two male kittens who are about 4 months old, and one of them likes gnawing off the other kitten's whiskers (mostly on one side of his face). This has resulted in half of his whiskers being short stubs and they never get too long before he's back at it again biting them in half. He does it while he's seemingly having a good time, grooming his brother and then chomping away on his whiskers. I always try to stop him when I see him doing this, but he must do it when I'm away or sleeping because the whiskers keep being short on one side. I feel so bad for him since I know how important whiskers are, is there a way I can stop this from happening? What could be possible causes for this? Is there a chance he'll grow out of it?

I wonder though.. my cat sometimes goes into space way smaller than her width and her slightly longer wiskers (and then wiggle around there to fit) so does it mean she ignores the warning signals cause she knows that she can open the door wider or wiggle through some tunnel? When she was a kitten got behind the wardrobe sideways and almost got me heart attack as she stuck there lol

i cant really use flat bowls/plates for my cat cause he's a jerk and will knock his food off the plate for funsies lol, but i use a huge dog bowl sometimes that he has no problem fitting his whiskers into. I also think whisker fatigue is part of why cats always want their dish full like how its a stereotype for cats that is the dish is only half full that means its empty to them--- that would be because they dont want to dip their head further into the bowl, they o0nly like eating the top layer off the surface where their whiskers dont brush!
