I had an older cat who would throw up like bile. Took him to the vet and they suggested bloodwork and it turned out he had hyperthyroidism. He lived for about another two years before he got bone cancer at 17 years old. He was my first ever black cat and he was the most amazing one too.
Mine, too. One of my family's four cats had his little incident, but was considerate enough to head outside to do his business. He puked twice, both times in small amounts. The first was a puddle about the size of a 50 cent piece and was covered in white foam. The second was a string of food that he mostly slurped up.
They ALWAYS run to throw up on the carpet..... If they are not on a carpet/rug, they will run for it to throw up on it... All of my cats have done this!
Exactly ! Mine has to find carpet to puke on. I always ask him, Why can't you do this on the kitchen floor so I can just wipe it up ?? Never fails!!!! But I love him anyway !!! ha ha !!
I swear my cat was brillant in her location to throw up. She always goes for the shower rug in the bathroom. Yet whenever the rug comes out of the dryer, she loves rubbing herself all over it and sleeping there at night. Now after about a week or two she'll throw up on it again. I swear she only does it to make me wash where she sleeps. Like she's saying, "Hey it's dirty. What you don't believe me? *barf*"
Great video Jackson!!! I was a vet tech for a long time and have been in cat rescue for a long time and everything you said and how you said it was right on point!!! Even the "I dont wanna see any comments about your cat being ok with milk and so was my grandma cat...." etc. was soooo perfect. Lol. And then at the end when you said "dont comment that your cat has vomited for 4 days....what do I do? ARGH!" The cat world is soooo lucky to have you and your true cat knowledge that you share. Thank you. I watched this video because I have 10 cats and feel my world consists of cat vomit!!! Ugh! Your imitations were hilariously perfect!
But I have a question if you don't mind. I don't give my cats or kittens milk at all except for cat milk from the store for little kittens and then I weed them off. But my question is that I have a son that is lactose intolerant and I buy lactose free butter and milk to help my son. Can I use lactose free milk as a treat for one of my cats or kittens or is it still not okay?
Laminated flooring, waterproof wood flooring (my neighbor was putting some in a couple of months ago and they only have kids not puking cats) or even just manufactured wood.
One of our cats had an episode where she was just puking continuously every few minutes. Took her to the vet (thinking she'd been poisoned) but they couldn't identify the reason. They gave her anti-nausea medication and sent her home. A couple days later, she was back to hacking and puking, and I noticed something sticking out of her nose. I pulled it out... it was a 5" stalk of grass. It must've been stuck in the back of her throat, causing her to gag for days. Poor kitty.
@@Kanggaxx it’s possible the grass wasn’t visible and only became visible after the cat was hacking more. I’m sure no vet just simply missed a stalk of grass sticking out of a cat’s nose 🙄
@@Kanggaxx The vet did suggest that she could have something stuck in her esophagus, but there was no way to tell without an xray, and since she initially responded well to the anti-nausea medication we agreed to wait and see. She's the type of cat who is very distressed by vets and medical procedures, so putting her through lots of tests wasn't anyone's preferred option. They gave her a full blood screen and were satisfied that she hadn't been poisoned (which was the main concern).
While I was pregnant, my cat was snoozing on a chair....the dog walked by and she threw up ON THE DOG. I was already so queasy, I nearly called my husband and told him to come home from work. And I’m a vet tech, so a little barf is generally NBD.
Also when it comes to hairballs there are a lot of good foods and treats that are anti hairball, and they work pretty well. Definitely something to consider if your cat gets hairballs.
Our (late) cat had the same wheezing/Asthma sound that he mentioned, but we found out a few weeks later that she had cancer on her lungs/kidneys. So FYI...if you think your cat has Asthma, best to get an x-ray to find out for sure.
Wheezing and abnormal breathing is always a reason to call a vet! Cats are great at hiding illness, so if you notice something change, take notes. I'm so sorry about your cat, Steve. Sounds like she lived a happy life up until then ❤️
Thanks for this comment Steve Our new rescue who we have no background on has recently started wheezing or coughing. The vet said asthma in cats in Australia is rare and its probably allergies. We did have the option of an xray so after hearing your story we will go back and get one. So sorry about the loss of your fur friend ❤
Yes! People kept saying that my cat was having a hairball but I took a video and showed it to the vet and she confirmed it was actually an asthma attack. She turns out to have serious breathing problems.
I'm glad to hear up to 3 times a month is normal. I've been trying to figure out why my one cat kept throwing up maybe a bit more than 3 times a month, more like once or twice per week. I started paying close attention to what she ate each day she threw up and it seemed that most of the time it was after she ate something with tuna! I cut out tuna and the vomiting has been greatly reduced. Still going to talk to the vet of course but I'm pretty convinced that was the problem!
That happened to one of my cats too. She swallowed a bunch of hair and basically had a hairball stuck in her bowels. She needed surgery to get it out so she could start eating again. 😿
@@kaitlynwickham6237 Same thing can happen with too big a piece of plastic and other such materials. Long items are the most dangerous since they can actually bind the intestines and kill your cat with out surgery.
It can be because there's no room (as in, they're obstructed), but cats also have an odd reflex where constipation can trigger vomiting directly. There's a nerve connection that causes it. Helpful Vancouver Vet talked about it in a video at one point.
Mine occasionally does too. There are lots of affordable slow feeder bowls available. Her's has an extruded fish pattern that the food suits in for her to work it out. This helps them take longer and doubles as a little mental puzzle.
With my long haired cat, the hair balls and barf are much less awful than when she gets a turd stuck in her fur and decides to try and dislodge it by dragging her ass all around my carpeted apartment. I’m surprised she still does it since it always ends with an angry human putting on a rubber glove and hanging her butt under the faucet... and then the hated carpet cleaner running for an hour.
@@evilsharkey8954 How else do expect the turd to get off her? She doesn't have hands and fingers! I can't believe you get mad. You should have got a short haired cat or better yet no cat at all!
Heather Franklin, she can pull it off with her teeth or try to shake it off. That’s what she used to do before she discovered the ass crayon technique. Whether I’m angry about having a streak of shit across my carpet or not, ass dragging means the turd is all smushed up into her fur, requiring water to remove, an experience neither of us likes. I trim her fur in the back to prevent that problem, but it grows back pretty quickly. Creepily, she enjoys having her nether regions trimmed with scissors, though I have to be really careful. It’s really easy to accidentally nip a cat’s skin with scissors.
Love you Jackson!!! Great information all the time!!!! I rescued a feral kitten years ago (my first cat ever) and he is the funniest, cutest, spunkiest guy in the whole world, not to mention a “Mojito Kitty”. He’s now 8-1/2 years old and I can’t even imagine my life without him!!! He’s definitely “The Man”. 💕
A couple of years ago, my longhaired black cat started puking almost every 20 minutes, for several days. EVEN MORE days of labs and late night vet costs later, we learned he was dealing with Pancreatitis and infections in his stomach and gallbladder. He's 6 and doing fantastic now.
If cats eat mice and rats in the wild, why don't pet food companies make mice or rat cat food? Mice and rats breed fast so you have a large supply to make food with. It seems like a no brainer to me.
@@firewilson920 .....but mice and rats are food for them just like chicken canned food is. Just like they don't play with the canned chicken canned food, they would not play with a rat or mice canned food.
Don't forget moths, dragonflies, earthworms... Our cats loved going out in the yard at night and snacking on moths. One of them liked dragonflies - except the wings, he'd leave those. And, yes, one ate an earthworm my dad found when he was planting flowers 😁😁.
Older video and not sure if it's already been mentioned in the comments, but I'd just like to share something I unfortunately learned fairly recently on this. If your cat vomits and it looks dark brown like Coke or Pepsi or something immediately take them into the vet. They are vomiting blood. Found out my kitty has renal failure and if I had waited any more time taking him, I very likely would have lost him. He is now on a Rx diet and doin well ☺️
I remember growing up, my family's cat Dusty would always be throwing up. It seemed like it was an almost every day occurrence, but it was probably more like once or twice a week in reality. We went to many different vets, and tried different medicines and diets, but nothing seemed to help her. The vets couldn't figure out what, exactly, was wrong. She did end up living until she was 18 years old, and she lived a very happy life other than the seemingly constant puking, but to this day I wonder what exactly was going on with her for her to throw up so much...
My sister's cat threw up three MASSIVE piles overnight while I was sleeping, so I had to assume it only happened in a space of a few hours. When I woke up to them and cleaned everything up, it was pretty obvious which cat it was as she had a staring coat, was isolating herself from the rest of the clowder and was overall looking pretty miserable. We just observed her that day with the intention of a vet visit if her poorly spell didn't lift on its own by the next day. Well, it did lift, and we discovered the culprit behind her misery was a house millipede she'd happily devoured. They come up our drains so now we've had to keep them plugged because the cats will eat them! Makes me shudder to think about it. While the millipede itself isn't toxic, the oils on them can be so we put it down to that and took some better precautions. Oh and we also found two dead millipedes in her poo. :) Nice visual for you there.
Excellent video, Jackson, thank you! 👍 I've seen her vomit right after breakfast and yep, my cat gobbles n' snarfs. Both that event and hairball puke are uncommon. She's not much of a puker. She does hack though. That asthma episode you performed, I've heard & seen that with her. She also makes all sorts of sounds while dozing and sleeping. I'll call my vet tomorrow.
Hello 😊 I look at all your cat posts and I get alot of useful info on what to know or help my 2, 3 year old cats so thank you for all the post you do its very helpful, keep up the great work
How unusual is it for a letter of cats from the same litter to have asthma? My cats do the hacking, but vets don't know the cause. None of them think it's asthma, because ALL of them are doing this and they sound and behave identical during episodes. They crouch down and start coughing or hacking, been doing that since they were kitten's. The episodes are incredibly infrequent now that they're older, but still concerning since they all have this symptoms. They don't have any illnesses such as parasites. They turned 1 a couple months ago.
Awesome Jackson, I’ve been searching net for answers/suggestions such as yours for a while. You nailed it & explain in the most relatable terms. Thank you & keep post. Would love to learn more about cat language 😉
Few, my 5 month year old cat just threw up for the first time. I got scared. Glad to know it's normal. But I'll keep an eye her and take her to the vet for a check up
My cat is a sweetheart but he has PICA, he will eat wicker paper, plastic on wires , you name it! Has to watched and we have stripped down the house ... It's insane.
My cat ate a neighbor's grass, which, unbeknownst to me, had been sprayed with poison. She got pancreatitis. The vet an I worked and worked but my beloved cat died of it. It was awful. I didn't catch it in time. The barfing and diarrhea were awful. My poor baby. It's an awful disease. Please, if your cat is throwing up often, take it to the vet. Thank you, Jackson,. This is a very good video.
My two cats throwed up alot. Then I read an article about raised food bowls that keep the neck straight and decided to give it a try. Now they rarely throw up.
Hi Jackson is that one of YOUR riffs in the background of the main video. I've heard it on your live from the catcave videos also and I love it. Kind of bluesy and 100% chill.
Whenever I feed one of my cats he scarfs it down and throws up. Thank you. Now I know about this bowl to make him eat slower lol. One of my room mates thought I was a bad cat mom and neglecting him cus I wasn’t worried and taking him to the vet. He’s like twelve now. I know the dude, he’s fine, he just eats too fast.
I'm looking forward to the IBS video! I spent $600 for an ultrasound just to get a diagnosis of "inflamed bowel". Gone through so many different types of foods and she's a finicky eater to boot.
Yup, my cat has IBD. I am anxiously awaiting that video. By the way, I wish I knew about your videos when Chloe was much younger. I love all your advice!
Thank you for your very informative video. It certainly explains a lot of my cat’s behavior. I currently have two tom cats. Jax is a scarf and barf and Benji is a very finicky eater. I have also noticed some of the asthma related symptoms in Jax, so we will be seeing a vet soon. Thanks again for the advice ❤
Last month, one of my cats started gagging multiple times a day. After running some tests, it turned out that she had acid reflux in relation to a pancreatitis flare-up, which was causing her to gag.
@@songsoflebanon After a couple weeks of medication (Cerenia and Sucralfate) and then also changing her food to a healthier diet (high quality wet food and raw food), she has thankfully been doing really well.
Our cat never throws up 😅 She always used to look so miserable when she did, poor girl. Now we give her malt paste everyday so the hair passes through her system and she poops it out instead.
@@Shamlathehealer hi! I would, but I can't find the brand I use on amazon. =( I buy mine locally from the petstore. If you don't have access to a local pet store, just search for "Cat malt" on amazon, they have many brands and some have reviews that can be very helpful. Just make sure it is sugarfree. 👍 😊
@@TintinSilver it's because I love my babies so much 😅And you are a wonderful parent too 🥰 and thank you for sharing! I didn't know about Cat Malt - I don't think it's common here in Singapore 😁 Shall look for it online. 👍🏽
This was very helpful . Thanks !! I was concerned my cat was hacking but not vomiting. My first thought and inclination was to check if she was choking
My majestic floofster Barry always throws up after eating wet food. Took him to the vet multiple times and all I got was a shrug and “don’t feed him that kind of food anymore” sooo helpful. Got him a slow feeder and moved his bowl to a quieter location and he’s totally fine now.
That you know of. Some cats that snarf and barf will eat their thrown up food if you don’t get to it quickly(not home, sleeping, showering). Some cats also hide and barf under or behind furniture.
@@Richsalvageconsultan Ha. Yes, she's my precious girl. She does like to attack ankles in the morning, and I can't seem to shake her of that habit. And she's got other issues. But I'm very, very thankful I don't deal with throw up.
@@dragonofmordor My shorthaired male seems to not even get hairballs. I never get a single hair when I brush him. I suspect he sheds so little it passes through. The black female is always shedding a little. I HAVE to brush her and then she just east to fast anyway, even with a slow feeder. She is just eating too much so I have to add to it through out the day until her ration is gone.
Asthma - it was caused by the silica toilet. A shit ton of dust apparently, even if it was supposedly dustless. We just didn't know what to do and the reason, and tried soy granules for the heck of it. She coughed only two more times. It was a scary thing, every night close to midnight. I had to hold her and calm her down.
My brother had a cat with IBD and he didn't respond to any of the therapies the vets prescribed for him. We watched Boo go from healthy and happy to constantly vomiting, poor coat health, losing weight, and cranky. Boo was 5.5 years old when we put him to sleep. My brother brought Boo home when he was about 6 weeks old, because he was born in a barn to a feral mama cat. He and his littermates were already showing signs of being feral. His feral behavior stopped after we brought him home and introduced him to our little old lady kitty. He became more prone to biting as he got sicker and his pain became more difficult to contol.
I'm so glad I watched this today. Making an appointment for our Momma, we thought she was having tons of trouble with Hairballs, it could be asthma. We adopted Momma as a stray, for my mother with Dementia, we know nothing about her, other than what the vet told us, healthy and pregnant. She had a litter of two, one survived. We call him Mouse.
Thanks for kind of confirming my newly adopted kitty's allergies. She kind of suffers the same mild symptoms I do, aka every few days she hacks/coughs but doesn't vomit. I will see tears/drainage from her eyes, its all clear fluid. Told my vet about this and that I had similar snotty nose/sneezing/hacking, poor kitty has seasonal allergies like me, nothing to worry about.
Hey Jackson! I think it may be useful to talk a bit about why cats will often barf on their favorite person's things when said person is away. I'm reasonably sure it happens with my cats because when I'm gone they tend to comfort themselves by sleeping on my bed, and my catsitter isn't as careful about portion size as she perhaps should be. So, large amount of time spent next to items that smell like their favorite person+sloppy food hygiene==having to change the blanket after every trip.
I'm literally nailing the hacking cat sounds that if anyone hear it would probably gagging too. Mine threw up because of a type food I'm trying to introduce into their daily meal. I discontinued giving them and the vomiting stopped.
We adopted two male kittens a year ago and made the decision to buy only grain-free foods, high in good quality protein, to not feed any table food, control their portions, watch videos on how to care for our cats... Since we don't have kids we can spend all our discretionary income on expensive food, treats, and toys, ha.A year later they are enormous, muscular boys, 14 pounds each, powerful, healthy, shiny, glossy, curious, confident, totally different personalities from one another but both are awesome. I don't know how much is due to the healthy food, how much is genetics.
Thank you so much for this video! Super helpful! And for that future IBD video--we lost a beloved kitty to it this year, and it was miserable for poor kitty and for us. All the best to you and yours!
Thank you for the video of cat litter. With 4 cats I got it fixed. Always had 2 litter pans but finally got it that 2 of my cats like the clay litter and the other 2 like the coconut litter. Both unscented and one plain and one clumping. Worked out just fine. Everyone is happy.
I shave my cats bellies and inside the legs as well as pads and hygiene areas. It’s cuts hairballs way back and they love it being clean and easy grooming
Thanks. The frequency thing was good and put my mind at ease. I think every good pet parent should take an interest in what comes out of their pet. Not obsessively, but I'm always checking to see what's normal so I know when things are off. My vet was pretty impressed that I could identify cat box patterns in each of my cats as I have 4 of them. Not always, but generally I can tell who left what...hahaha
Yep i do not like that sound in the middle of the night when im dead asleep. Its like, no no please not in my bed, or while walking to the bathroom in the dark, stepping in it.
I have always pitied cats for that hairball thing. The way it looks and the way it sounds, when the little sweeties bring up a hairball ... that can't be any fun. It is however a very effective method to make dad give them a cuddle and a treat, to reward them for what they have just now endured so heroically 😻
I have to say that having had so many cats i always make sure to tidy anything potentially edible of all kitchen surfaces. This doesn’t stop the Tib from giving them a good inspection every evening (he thinks i can’t hear him but nothing can conceal the huge thud he makes when he jumps back down). A couple of weeks ago his patience was rewarded when i accidentally left a pound of butter- albeit wrapped - out overnight to be soft for baking the next day. I awoke to the sound of him hoiking it up and was rewarded by a couple of little patches of white foam on the stairs and claw marks in the butter. If they’re allergic to milk they’re probably allergic to milk derivatives also.
My cat has only thrown up once since we got her in March, and that was because we gave her a different brand of food. We also give her less food, but more often, so she doesn't over eat.
I wonder how many people I can make jealous right now, my cat has only ever regurgitated one small hairball. Mind you he’s a really big cat, and he doesn’t always fit entirely into the litter tray, and it’s a big tray. So no hair balls, but plenty of mopping.
snarf and barf! that is my cat's problem. we have several cats and when the other cat finishes her food she comes after the other cat's bowl, so that cat eats fast. Great tips I will try!
My vet dewormed my kitten at 8 weeks old. About 3 weeks later, he woke up at 2:00am jumped off the bed onto the floor threw up clear liquid with something long and white. That's when I noticed the white thing moved. I waited until 8:00am called the vet to bring him in. They gave him a different dewormer and something to calm his stomach
Ahhh the snarfer/barfer cat... My tabby cat was diagnosed with kidney disease (she's 15) so we cut out her fave kibbles, which are high in protein. My other grey cat still eats them. So when the grey cat leaves some behind, the tabby will sneak as soon as I turn my back and inhale whatever she can find. If I catch her, while I call her attention and get to the food to take it away she will eat as much and as fast as she can. Then she switches to her special food as if it was always her intention to eat that. Then it all goes out onto the carpet.
White cats are more prone to food allergies. We spent over $300 to do testing, ruled everything out and still had no answers. It was a friend that asked us "is your cat white?" I was like, "yeah, how'd you know?!" She still snarfs her food but she doesn't throw up or scratch herself so bad she has infected sores. Since we changed her food she's like a new cat. Fancy feast (the wet food) has ash in it. The ash clogs their kidneys. I hope this info helps someone and possibly help save money?
