I’m a promoter and have been to over 100 concerts in my life and I think that the biggest problem is that venues are overselling the shows and cutting corners to make more money

sooo true. i went to a nascar aloe concert in a venue that was EXTREMELY tiny (and upstairs) and there were so many people in there!! people were even sitting on the stage because there wasn’t any space. it was so filled and the pit was so wild that the floor was indented afterward.

They love to ignore promoter riders and claim its 'in house catering only". Artist that visit my venue are always treated kindly to their face and be little when backs are turned, Its unfortunate that house staff will get yelled at by tour staff cause the boss's boss said "reuse towel desipe the tour paying for new towels or you we wont upgrade your blown out subs."

tiktok really messed up concert crowds bc it seems like, esp the younger folk, the entire time are waiting for THAT specific portion of a song that is a trend or viral instead of enjoying the show. Knowing they have videos of the concert takes them out of the moment and they just focus on getting a perfect recording bc they know they can replay it later

At Phoebe Bridgers earlier this year there was two young girls in front of us and one of them was clearly the “wannabe influencer” friend and the other was her videographer and she filmed her singing a long and dancing emphatically to E V E R Y song. It ruined the show for me because they had the light on so you could see her face and it was soo annoying and distracting. it was all I could see most of the time because we were at the back of the lawn, they were 5ft in front of us and there was no screen showing us the stage up close so it was literally all I could focus on. 😢 I wish I could properly explain how obnoxious it was. The faces and try hard of it all was 🥴

I went to a Lord Huron concert with my sister and were at the barricade all night! My favorite band ever and it was an amazing concert! But at the end they played their most viral song “The Night We Met” popularized on 13 Reasons Why; and ppl literally shoved in front of us and lost all sense of politeness and seemed like it was the only song the majority of the crowd new and waited for only for the “gram” 🤔

i agree with the tiktok point youre trying to make here, but it's verging on the edge of phones=bad. reminder that recording moments youll never get to see again and will remember for a lifetime is totally okay!! I actually tend to watch most of the concert and specifically record the part thats popular so i can remember it for later bc thats when most people will be recording :D

One of my friends is a really big Willow Smith fan and she went to a Willow concert like a year ago, and she said this exact same thing. She said Willow was getting annoyed with her own crowd because she kept trying to interact with them and tell them to mosh or crowd surf or do certain dance moves, and they were completely ignoring her and only trying to get the video for TikTok. Most of them didn't know any of Willow's music except for the tracks that went viral, and even then they only knew the one little snippet of the song that is used in TikTok videos and such.

Literally. I was at this music festival which has dozens of artists and a few popular artists. Of course, more people came to a certain stage if someone well known was playing and they were pushing past to get closer to the stage and for a better view. The pushing didn’t annoy me so much, but I’d see the same people that were so desperate to get closer but were literally on their phones. If they weren’t on their phones then they’d look bored as hell barely tapping their feet. They would start filming at like 1 part of the song that everyone knew, would be jumping and making the video look so fun then go right back to standing around.

back when I was a baby metalhead, the adult metalheads in the crowds taught me everything I needed to know about concert etiquette. How to headbang, how to mosh(always help each other up when they fall), how to respect each other. I’ve worked in the music industry since 19 (I’m 27 now) as a bartender, a venue manager, merch, security, box office and now as a sound tech! I’d love to weigh in on this because I’m glad you were able to notice some of these things. The etiquette thing is so real. For example, there’s a tiktok trend where I guess you fall backwards; there was a show for a tiktok famous artist, so a lot of young people. Before the show these kids were CLIMBING ONTO THE STAGE (which is set up with expensive gear) TO FALL BACKWARDS ONTO IT AND DO THIS TREND. My bf was very satisfied using the talk back mic to blast “please get off the stage” thru the monitors and they scattered. Never in my life. In the industry, there’s a term called “punishing”; it refers to fans who go up to artists after the show and trap them into a trauma dump with no regard for other fans waiting to say hello to their favorite artists. This trauma dumping on artists has become more frequent. Please y’all, they’re on tour, it’s already hard to get thru certain songs for them bc they have to relive their own shit. Ask yourself, “is this a conversation for my therapist?” Finally, tours have gotten significantly smaller. Where previously you would get a tour manager, a merch manager, a videographer and instrument techs all touring with the band; now in mid to large sized tours, all these jobs frequently land on one person, sometimes even a band member themself. Also, venues are all understaffed. Venues are greedy af and don’t want to pay security what they deserve. It’s an extremely dangerous and important job and these people risk a lot to keep shows safe. A lot of us venue staff depend on shows happening, and we are still cancelling lots of shows because of Covid. Many folks have left the industry in search of stability. In my opinion, shows are not as safe. We had a hardcore show the other night where we couldn’t find any security to work. It was a small to mid sized tour, so like 250 ppl. There was a huge fight. Blood all over the bathroom. Nobody to break it up but other people in the crowd.

Woah, that's eye-opening. Thank you for this insight, it really helps give perspective to everything I've been noticing lately. i think the whole music industry is struggling tbf because many artists just don't make enough money from streaming and stuff and therefore can't afford big groups to help them on the road, as touring and merch selling are the only ways they make money, so it often has to be done as you said, by band members, or friends willing to help out for free.

I dont like to film in concerts, in fact rhe other day i saw harry styles in madrid and i just filmed like 1 minute of sign of the times and that’s it, and i also dont get why people film all the concert… but tbh why is it a bad thing? like cant we just let everyone do what they wanr and experience things the way they want to? we live in a time where technology is basicaly everywhere at anytime, times are moving very fast and of course now the way of expericing things is changing… maybe for you, like for me, the more real way of experiencing a concert is to not film, but maybe for another person is the other way around… in the hsrry styles concert there were a lot of people filming and dancing and singing at the same time, why is that a bad thing? just think about yourself and let people live their lives how they want to, everything is subjective and what is good for you can be bad for me… (sorry for my english im spanish)

I always had my phone out and was recording everything new I saw, when I was at museum, at festivals, anything fun and I don’t even look at those videos anymore. Everyone feels like they need to get a video and a picture to capture the moment, but they end up completely missing being in the moment trying to get a video for their twitter or Instagram. And the concert etiquette is 100% a gen z problem! Why are we so rude and disrespectful to others who are also there to see and support our favorite artists? It’s complete entitlement and personal selfishness. Hopefully we can grow out of it

I wish people would just stop trying to record the entire concert on their phones. I guess I get recording them for a minute or two, maybe to show your friends, but the entire time? Why would ANYONE want to do that? Aside from it being rude, it wastes storage space, you have to hold your phone up the whole time, the video is blurry anyway, there's most likely a more professionally recorded version of the concert on RU-vid anyway, and, as you said, recording it the whole time kills the moment.

FINALLY I'm seeing more of this take. Some people have become so wrapped up in this "main character" way of thinking that they believe the entire show is catered solely to them. Concerts used to be a place to connect with the artist and with those you share a music taste with. Unfortunately, we are seeing it becoming just another place for people to over-record to prove they were there to those who follow them. I also think more artists are taking mental health time off because their own fans view them more as a product to suck content out of rather than a human who is trying to share their art, and at times the more vulnerable part of themselves, with the world.

@@mistress.villaina7591 exactly this is why I love the Louis Tomlinson fandom (and 1D fandom) because it really feels like most of the hardcore stans don’t really care about “new” music, we’ll get hyped when he’s gonna come out with a new album, but we’re not just there to get the album content, we’re there for the connection with Louis, we’re there to stream his songs on repeat analyzing the lyrics, we’re here to look at the unreleased songs and just sit there in amazement wondering how it didn’t make the cut… most listeners now don’t end up being anything more than casual fans of people I feel like, so they’re not in it for the artist/person but just for their music. (and I mentioned 1D because we are the prime example of this they literally haven’t been together in 6 years and haven’t released anything and we still are here supporting their new content and current lives and reminiscing about the old stuff and even though we want them to get back together someday nobody thinks they “owe” it to us and we really just want them to be happy)

Went to Yungblud recently. Absolute Carnage. He's a rock artist. Flamethrowers on stage. Crowds of thousands pouring with sweat. Upwards of 40, if not 50, degrees in the pit (in Fahrenheit, that's 105 to 122 degrees). Security seemed more focused on making sure everyone stayed in their pen and didn't run the stage than getting concert goers water and medical attention. There was no way any of us were losing our spots at the front of pit to line up at the arena's canteen and buy a water. Security usually hand out cups of water on trays that get passed around the pit before and during the opener for this very reason. They also usually turn the air conditioning to extremely cold because everyone knows 10 000 people in a room dancing is going to get hot. They didn't do either. About 15 people PER SONG had to be dragged over the barricade at the front of the pit because they'd passed out. The venue, management and security were 100% responsible for the chaos. I heard many people afterwards discussing the similarities between our show and Astroworld. The greatest difference was the culture of Yungblud's fanbase and the fact he stopped the show multiple times. If not for those, it could've gotten really out of hand. Keeping people safe and making sure they have a good time is definitely a collaborative effort.

it's so ironic that most of the hardcore shows I went to (punk, rock, metal) where you would expect people to rage and be inconsiderate and potentially injure you were one of the most enjoyable shows I have gone to and the crowd was always polite and considerate and took care of one another, whereas the more pop/mainstream shows were usually pretty awful in terms of the crowd and people were just straight up rude and mean to one another.

I’m not a fan of concerts, I find them very overstimulating and draining, but I feel like the vibes are just… collectively off. While I love the self-love journey so many folks have been embarking on lately (myself included), I think there’s a real pendulum swing towards selfishness and “you don’t owe anyone anything ever.” It’s causing a real mess because people are much more callous and entitled in public spaces than they used to be. I’m sure it’s a mix of lack of emotional regulation due to chronic stress from the Circumstances, but the shifting cultural norms are also a thing. Like honor yourself as a person, create a nourishing home within yourself, we love to see it, but please remember that you (collective you) are not the only human. Compassion still matters.

One of my first concerts after COVID was Lizzy McAlpine, and I swear I've never been in a crowd like that. People were so rude? They would catcall her and a few people shouted song requests? As if she doesn't have a set list. Like she doesn't live to serve you. I feel like she hated the crowd too, because by the end she barely talked between songs and looked like she was just trying to get through it. The crowd was younger than they usually are at the concerts I've been to and I'm wondering if growing up with social media also makes people feel like they can ask more of a musician. When I went to the Script at 17 I knew for a fact they had no clue who I was and social media was a bit of a thing already but in no way like what it is now.

People were booing when he announced the "Disco Medley" and kept screaming at him to sing "Fine Line" or "Medicine". It's okay when you make funny signs to encourage him to potentially sing those songs, but people need to remember that they are not entitled to demand an artist to sing a certain song. I definitely think the "pandemic maturity gap" has definitely affected concerts more specifically big arena/festivals. I saw Tame Impala this year (2022), and I actually saw them in 2012 my freshman year of college. I point this out because the difference between the two concerts was that now Tame Impala play arenas and in 2012 they played local mid-tier venues and thus have different crowds and vibes. Unfortunately, for this recent concert, it felt like a lot of college kids were going super hard with drugs because they had to stop the concert during the OPENER (Jungle Pussy) cause someone had passed out from intoxication and then thrice during Tame Impala's set. There was an ambulance outside when we left the venue and several college kids were getting pulled out on stretchers. Not because they were crushed or had physical injuries, but because they were just going super hard. I think this is why I never appreciated big concerts and preferred more intimate local venues. Better etiquette and generally more age diverse and thus respectful.

She would sing, pre recorded song would play she go backstage and dancers be dancing on stage, she came back and sang a song then went backstage again. omg im so sorry that happened to you! i went to go see Tv Girl to with my brother back in like early December. I love, love, love, the band with all my heart but the crowd; the crowd was okay and people were singing (kinda) but at times i feel like i couldn’t even sing as loud as i wanted to because the crowd was so quiet because they didn’t actually know any of the songs. I feel like i was the only one that actually listened to tv girl and listened to all their albums and not just lovers rock or not allowed because once those songs came on then the crowd got really loud. i feel like since TikTok, People are just going to concerts to hear the 1 or 2, 15 second popular parts of the “TikTok popular” songs that the band has made and not even pay attention or listen to the full albums or any other songs besides the virals one. So i feel like concerts nowadays are just filled with a bunch of fake fans from TikTok and so when they go to 2 or 3 hour long concerts just to only know 1 or 2 songs of course they’re not gonna have a good time because they can’t sing anything and are probably bored waiting for hours just for the only song(s) they know to come on therefore they throw off the whole vibe of the entire concert and even sometimes like in your story, make the concert a bad experience for everyone else. But that was my experience with them. They played really great though! great stage presence too plus just being able to see and listen to them in person and i got a cool t-shirt and vinyl so it was worth it. As a gen z person who has gone to shows pre-pandemic, it’s honestly so crazy how much concerts have changed. I went to see 5sos at the armory in July and I had gotten VIP. During the Q&A, people (mostly young gen z) were shouting and screaming at them when they were talking and were holding up posters. After vip was done, they were bringing in multiple bags with merch into the pit and refusing to take some steps back. My siblings and I had been talking about starting a pit during a couple of their songs and we got a shite ton of kids and their moms giving us dirty looks. Like if your are in the pit at a 5sos show, how are you not going to start moving. We had decided to move to the back because of the amount of people without masks and straight up coughing and sneezing on my sister. I kinda feel bad for 5sos and other bands who have a younger following that have no concert etiquete

in a lot of the shows for the US leg of this year's 5sos tour, so many people kept on chanting for them to sing old songs that are 'jokes' in the fandom, one of the songs 'pizza' which is a 42 second long song abt wanting pizza even got put on the setlist because of it, and people kept on interupting their speeches because they were chanting the names of the songs bc they wanted them to play it and you could see on their faces that it kind of upset them. there was one show where the lead singer was talking and the crowd was quiet and he literally said 'wow you guys are actually listening to me' which is so sad when you think about it

I went to a Declan McKenna's concert a few months ago and I was SO hyped and ready to dance. When my sister and I got there we were so disappointed. The crowd was lame af and some girls literally asked ppl who sang to shut up 💀 Nobody was dancing or singing when declan's songs are such a vibe and the man himself is going crazy on stage ! I actually fit in the "younger crowd" Category cause I'm 17 but I totally agree with you on the lack of fun people my age have. I went to Harry Styles's concert with some friends and it was one of them's second concert and she didn't want to dance?! She thought she was going to sit the whole show. It really is weird to me that during a show, people wouldn't dance because they're embarrassed. I feel like during a concert we can be whoever we wanna be and it doesn't matter if you don't know how to dance you're there to have fun not to "look good". So if anyone who's never been to a concert needs an advice I'd say be whoever you wanna be, dance as much as you want to and song at the top of your lungs. You're never gonna see the people around you again. You paid for your ticket so HAVE FUN (and be nice. If people around you are crying or dancing or singing don't judge them. I guess this is an unpopular take, but I love looking back at the recordings I made of concerts! I've been to a couple bts concerts in 2018/2019 and I still look back at the videos I took there once every couple months. I know I could look online for professional recordings of those tours, but at a concert with such incredible visual dynamics and audience synergy, it's a completely different vibe looking at my recordings. I do limit how much I have my phone out, but my first bts concert I recorded in pieces about half an hour of a 2.5 hour show and I'll watch all of it back and feel transported to that time and those moments. at more intimate/less visually impressive shows I find myself looking back at the videos much less, so I think in the future I'll just leave my phone out of those experiences.

This is one of the reasons why I adore small venue shows. Where I live there’s a huge local music scene & I’m so grateful for it. No one is on their phones, everyone is jumping around and having fun. When someone falls, they lift them up & get them water, because the artists actually know the people in crowd most of the time and want to take care of them. I hadn’t been to a lot of large shows, and when I went to Mitski I was like…oh lol. I felt so bad for her, the tik tok crowd filming just to post a video of washing machine heart and get likes off of it. During a quiet emotional moment of the show, they yelled ‘mommy’ at her. Actually disgusting. I’m younger gen z, but I think I’m less chronically online lol and I’m used to going to shows locally so I know when to be loud & crazy and when to stfu, which includes not yelling at the artists or throwing shit on the stage while they are performing. I went to a local (ish) show recently (wasn’t stadium size but bigger than I usually go to) where they played a super high emotion song about mental health, and asked the audience to be completely silent for the full 3 minutes of the song. Everyone listened, and even after it was over, we waited to cheer until the artist said we could. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but it was a pretty big group of people, and you’d NEVER find that kind of etiquette from a stadium audience.

Spot on. The intimacy between the performers and the crowd in small venues cannot be replicated. Simple as. It also depends what scene you're in. I'm really big into hardcore, and if you're at a hardcore show, the madness and crazy atmosphere, but also respect between everyone there, is absolutely amazing and i've never seen anything like it anywhere else. A lot of the time I feel, it's less about the music, but more about the performers, the art of controlling a crowd and delivering a good show has also faded I feel (this is down to many things i'm not going to get into right now, as we could be here writing for days).

I told them to have some respect and not be mad just because they care about their own health. They just rolled their eyes…….After that I walked around with candy and asked everyone if they were ok or needed some sugar !!! Its not that Hard to take care of others !!! I’ve seen bring me the horizon live twice, once when I was 16 and last year at 21, all I’ve gotta say for both times is: the people are full of empathy and solidarity, usually due to the nature of the songs there’s a lot of movement and since we’re all crammed in one space there’s bound to be an accident or two but when I tell you as soon as people saw that I was being crushed by someone or that someone was about to push me into a mosh pit when I clearly did not want to they stepped up to help. I will never forget this guy who held on to me for DEAR life for a minute straight when he saw I was almost ran over by the crowd opening up for a pit. He literally held me up and kept me on my feet until he saw that I was really okay, I’ll never forget that and I’ll be forever grateful.

The best concert I ever went to was Melanie Martinez before she blew up, back in 2016. The crowd was lovely, I was like 14, everybody was very chill and just wanted to listen with Melanie. She was late but I don’t blame her on it. I still love her sm

The best concert I ever went to was a Rage Against The Machine concert back in 1996 at the Tower Theatre. It was pure chaos and I remember I got knocked over a couple of times because I was right in the middle of the mosh pit so I had to move to the side of the crowd/stage out of the way. But I had a BLAST!!! 🤩

I couldn't disagree more. I've been playing music for over fifteen years now and I actually kind of hate it when an audience gets all energetic and starts dancing and doing shit like that. I want them to listen to the music, not jump around and dance like idiots. Concerts are absolutely NOT for shaking ass. You shake ass at one of my shows and I'll club you over the head with a fucking tire iron.

Smaller venues, smaller crowds and smaller artists are always the best shows imo. I mostly go to rock or punk shows so i feel like most of the crowd is already more used to the whole pushing and shoving/moshing situation. Alot of these people know what to do when someone falls in the pit or someone gets hurt. I went to see Shame at a relatively small venue here in Belgium as my first 'post covid' show and it was just amazing. The engery of the crowd was so good, people who wanted to get crazy did so in the middle front of the stage and the people who just want to enjoy the music but don't nenecessarily want to go into the pit had the chance to do that at the sides and at the back, the way it's supposed to be i think.

Yea honestly I saw City Morgue and NASCAR Aloe and because the crowd is more made up of like hardcore punk fans it was already 2nd nature to us when it come to moshing and shit so we had no stops or water breaks or whatever. I feel like this issue she is talking about is more with non hardcore artist as they might have younger and less experienced audience

haven't been to a concert since i was 12 or 13 (covid + i wasn't old enough to go by myself, i am now) but im definitely looking at wayyy smaller artists to see atm locally, my first show was at a pretty small venue and i loved the feel of it. i think that younger & non hardcore folks should be aware of concert etiquette, what to do if someone falls or gets hurt etc etc. i also believe that younger people should go to a smaller show before going to a huge one but maybe that one's just me.

agreed, my first concert was at a bigger venue (big for my standard) anyway we had golden circle and yeah it was pushing, weird looks from drunk guys, yeah it was a little uncomfortable. the music was great. However when I went to see Conan Gray which was a smaller artist, and we were at a smaller venue. The vibes and everything was different. Everyone enjoyed it, he even got us to sing the birthday song for his crew member in our own language. (which he preferred to the American one) lol but yeah id rather go to a smaller intimate concert than to a big one

i went to a panic at the disco concert earlier this year and there were some 20-something adults next to me in a group, and they’d moved to the seats behind me because they saw other people they “just wanted to be with”, the opener (fletcher) sang a song called becky’s so hot and made the crowd chant the title for like 20 seconds and throughout the show (also during panic’s set and even as we were leaving) they’d keep chanting it over and over and not quietly, they were screaming. they were also getting very very drunk which sure you can do that but it made the concert experience really bad as the more drunk they got, the louder and crazier they got

It has to be so dehumanizing as an artist to look into a crowd and just see phones staring back at you. people live for content now instead of just living in the moment like you'll look back at that concert and just remember stressfully trying to record every second or seeing it through your phone screen.

I was at a music festival, my friend and I went and checked out this one DJ we didn't really know it was mad hot so we were a couple steps back from the crowd just vibing, this group of girls, we had nothing to do with, pushed through us and started dancing really aggressively in front of us elbowing us and giving us side eye. I thought it was all in my head.

To be honest, I've been to quite a few concerts but the stand out for me has to be the second Troye Sivan concert I went to. I got standing tickets and instead of going right to the front to be able to see him better me and my friends hung round the back and I honestly had a WAY better time at the back dancing with my mates than I would have had, had we been in the thicker part of the mosh. The crowd around us probably wasn't as hype as those in the front, but me & my friends just focused on us, literally best show I've ever been to hands down. Can't recommend the back enough tbh

i went to a twenty one pilots concert (i miss when their tix were $30 like you said they’re $100 + now😭) in tx literally right before the Astroworld disaster and one thing i will say is their security is on it. everyone was considerate and no one was pushing (on purpose) and the security was giving water and making sure everyone was okay. most of the crowd was 16+ and everyone was super kind and most talked about seeing them pre-pandemic. newer concert goers just don’t understand concert etiquette.

i saw harry during his US tour last year and he is such a great performer and all of his shows have the absolute best vibe with people dancing and just having a good time. the concert i went to was totally normal, fun vibes until the very last song when some fans in the front threw a lot of water on him and he seemed to get pretty upset. obviously he just continued with the show and didn’t let it slow him down but i could even tell that he was prettyyy pissed getting off stage. it’s completely understandable bc it’s a safety hazard for him since he dances around a lot too during his shows. it’s just a lesson of thinking before you act when it comes to a lot of this stuff bc at the end of the day the performer is human too.

the thing especially about harry and the water during kiwi is he was usually ok with it at a very specific time (towards the end of the song) but people kept throwing it through the entire song making it so he couldn't dance and jump around as much as he usually does and thats what made him upset. i also think harry is pretty lenient on what fans do/throw on stage compared to other artists and people take advantage of it

The worst concert I’ve ever been to was Melanie Martinez back in 2015 when I was 16 years old. The same thing that happened at Travis Scott’s concert happened there except it was a smaller venue and the people getting trampled were dragged out by their friends and taken outside. AND To top it off, Melanie Martinez had SUCH a bad attitude. She yelled at us for “screaming her lyrics too loud” and she even walked out at one point saying she didn’t even know why she was here because she didn’t want to be. She shortened her set and ended up walking off without saying anything at the end and we all just stood there confused. The best concert I’ve been in a while was Fletcher. Just a bunch of lesbians being happy and nice to one another obsessed over the same woman LOL (including me, and I’m straight) she also signed a lot of people’s b00bies including mine during her set ahaha - 10/10 recommend
