Aero gains, easier to massage, they look better… the list goes on! People give lots of reasons why they shave their legs specifically for cycling, but does it actually make you any faster? All the pros do it, so should you too? Ollie went to a wind tunnel to find out how much difference shaved legs really make for the average cyclist.

I watched this video and entered my first Time Trial race with freshly shave legs because it's now proven to be more aero. After having crashed several times I can attest that my road rash was significantly less and healed faster when my legs and arms were shaved. When they were hairy - it seemed to pull the skin and create much deeper and more significant wounds. I do it for this reason. Now and then I'll shave my legs, mostly during race season. I had a small accident in a race, stitches and road rash involved. The medics asked me why don't I shave my legs like everyone else? I think that most people who shave their legs (cyclist or non-cyclist) do it for the same basic reason - confidence. There are lots of other excuses, but it’s ultimately about feeling fast, fitting in with peers or just feeling pretty, all of which make people feel more confident!

There is the other often cited reasons than performance and vanity: clean road rash wounds and easier massage. As for the massage reason, I can concur that if one has a sports massage with a friction technique (not using oil but a friction cream), it can be very painful with leg hairs being pulled. I don't get massages often enough to shave my leg hairs though.

Amongst them, massaging, 3 watts saving, it felt cleaner, my girlfriend at the time really liked shaved legs and for hygiene. It was so much easier and more hygienic cleaning road rash. It was bad enough picking out bits of gravel and melted nylon/spandex without worrying about all the hair. Edit - For clarity, that was club level racing.

Can we have a show that takes all these potential power savings, adds them up and shows the potential overall difference. Seems there are so many savings claims that when added together just one kick of the pedal should have us flying off at light speed 😂 Maybe makes some assumptions about the average club cyclist as a start point and apply to some realistic scenarios such as TT, Sportive, etc. I'll start a list, but please add in the comments anything I missed. - low rolling resistance tires - deep section wheels - low profile pedals - aero shoe covers - aero socks - ceramic bearings (wheels, derailleur pulleys, bb) - shaved body parts - beards - aero frame and seat post - aero handlebars - narrow bars - turned in shifters - integrated cabling - skin suit - head condom - aero helmet - aero glasses - aero gloves - chain waxing - aero bra and pants

Makes you feel faster if anything. 6. Who fucking cares if you have hair or not. Do your own thing.

I can vouch for making it easier to treat road rash with shaved legs, having grit and gravel scrubbed out of your wound with peroxide is not fun. Another reason I shave is that it makes it easier to get my compression running tights on and off and they are not pulling my leg hair as I run I do wear running shorts but in lower temps I wear tights and I got arthritis and the compression tights help with it. And bare legs feel nice in a breeze or riding on a nice day. LOL as for performance gains I ride a flat bar Hybrid bike on the street and I'm not setting any speed records or KOM's just riding to work, doing my errands and sometimes a ride just for the fun of it.

And even double edged razors are miles above the 4 or 5 bladed garbage that most folks use. Doesn't clog up so fast and rinses out very fast. But make sure to use a brand of the sharpest blades. And just as important, use shaving soap and brush, not the aerosol foam cans.

part of the appeal of 'old era' of cycling was the ability to tinker with the bike, change this, change that, fix basic issues and add whatever you decide to add to it, create something individual to you. Somehow that's all gone to a degree, particularly with the latest generation of bikes. I feel the need to shift a large part of the blame towards the big bike companies. It starts with whatever they supply to the pros as the benchmark of what will sell to the public, ie if the pros run it, then the public will buy into it...if all the pros ran rim brakes, we'd all be using them too!

One BIG thing missing here... facial hair. Did Ollie just not want to shave his beard? What diff is there between a bearded or 5 o'clock shadow type beard vs clean shaved? Inquiring minds need to know. Also... back in the 80s there was controversy over Fignon sporting a pony tail that created a lot of drag vs Lemond's helmet. What drag does a pony tail add on a helmeted rider? Certainly we see in women's Downhill and Super G, pony tails hanging out the back. Could they be faster if they tucked their ponies into their speed suits?

Gals are more likely to shave their legs anyway. I guess we could put our hair into a low bun just beneath our helmet. Shaving the legs was primarily for one reason, if you were racing and went down you able to clean out the wound. If you were racing multi stage races, unless injury was catastrophic, you could continue to race. The biggest thing is once you start it's hard to let it grow back out! Itches like hell at night in the bed.

Watched a thing about aero socks and they went into aerodynamic theory and need for smoothness on the leading edge, then that dimpled (golfball-like) surface on the sides and trailing edges. To replicate that with leg hair I think you would want to (if the shin is 12 o'clock) shave it smooth from about 10 to 2, then fade it into being full wookie from about 5 to 7 o'clock. The longer hair should reduce trailing edge turbulence. So I call for a re-test with a bizarrely styled leg hair mullet. Come to think of it...the mullet actually seems to follow the same principle, so I would suggest that as well.
@stealthy.mammoth

How about aero legs, similar to aero socks? Smooth on the front and back, but a strip of hair running down either side of the leg to trip the airflow to turbulent to keep it attached to reduce drag?

Yes you are correct, while the wattage saving is smaller for a rider at slower speeds if they are riding the same length of course the overall time saving can be very similar because they are spending a much larger amount of time riding the course. In fact I watched a video on here the other day with wind tunnel testing specific to gravel riding and kit, and when they modelled savings over the 200 mile Unbound Gravel course a slower rider actually saved a larger amount of time than a faster rider.

I do it because furry legs feel awful once the shorts come out, it's far easier to get cleaned up after mtb rides, easier to treat road rash if you happen to fall, etc... I don't care about aero with the legs.

Honestly? Just for comfort. Years ago as an international level track and field sprinter I shaved mainly for ease of massages, but I also found I was more comfortable without the hair. These days on my bike I find the wind blasting through my hairy legs just makes them itchy, just plain uncomfortable most of the time. So, off they go and I’m just more comfortable and I don’t care if it’s cool or more aero or not, I’m happier on my bike and that’s what counts.

There are lots of things to improve before shaving to gain speed. I e. food, training, your own weight, streghth, rest properly before the race, hydration, strategy and least, weight of they bike and shaving. But what you can show is your legs shaved and your new brand carbono bike. That's is cycling nowadays, only showing off

Even if the ‘wind’ is coming directly from the side, there is still going to be air resistance directly from the front due to the fact your are cycling forwards, so standard aero gains would still come in to play.
