I try not to let my dog lick my mouth but she still does sometimes by accident. When I was a child it didn't bother me at all and I let my dog lick my mouth without thinking much of it. I have no reason to believe doing this has ever caused me any health issues and I have been pretty healthy all my life. I wouldn't want someone else's dog to do this but with your own dog, I think you'll catch something if you're going to regardless of what you do. You can't live with an animal you touch regularly and not get its germs so a bit of licking doesn't make much difference.
Alanna Baker What an idiotic comment. Does the fact that my children vomited and occasionally crapped where they shouldn't mean I have poor parenting skills?
My current dog eat crap constantly for years. I switched from a cheap food (Purina) to something better (Taste of the Wild), and viola - no more poop eating.
I have so many questions about dogs and their behavior. Why do dogs enjoy stinky things? Why do they roll in the poop of other animals? Why do they tear out used pads? And why do they smell weird when they get wet?
I feel very unsatisfied. I have never once in my life seen a dog eat it's own poop, but I've seen MANY dogs who eat cat poop, so I was hoping that would at least be mentioned. :(
We call them tootsie rolls around here... Our dogs love to visit the kitty litter pan after supper, thus the reference to tootsie rolls ;-) A VERY GROSS desert ;-)
KaaSerpent I made a dog proof cat litter box. Just a large container with a lid and cut a square hole in the top for the kitty to jump in. It works better for smaller dogs though.
My pugs love Rabbit shit...I swear, they hunt through the yard looking for rabbit droppings and act like they have found skittles! So gross. Luckily they don't eat their own poop - but they do like to lick each others buttholes. lol Pugs are weird.
Too bad they aren't around here to clean up the mess my rabbit kicks out of her cage. Even the magpies don't seem to bother with it. Interestingly enough, rabbits also eat their droppings - a specific type, called night droppings. They do that instead of chewing a cud, since they can't throw up. There's only one direction something can go once it's down the hatch. Out the other end.
Great vid! But it doesn't explain my dog's behavior, he has not once eaten his own poop, or fresh poop he finds outside (dammit folks in my neighborhood, I know you can all afford poop bags!), he only eats dried up cat poop he finds out on walks. Never the fresh stuff, I always hear a crunch. Why might he do this? He eats all sorts of other things too, I often have to fish shattered chicken bones out of his mouth, and just last night he tried to eat snowberries. Other things he has eaten: spelt flour, waffle batter, a whole chocolate cake, lipstick, chapstick, mints, whole loaves of bread, book covers, empty milk cartons, tissues, toilet paper rolls, gum, tennis balls, soccer balls, kickballs, baseballs (did you know that baseballs have a ball of purple string inside?), easter candy, asparagus and zucchini from the garden, mystery berries off the sidewalk, Neosporin and petroleum jelly. I am honestly surprised he hasn't poisoned himself yet.
Oh gosh, that's a lot of non-edible things! If the past few days are any indication, Arlo might be the same way. He chews on EVERYTHING (but I guess most puppies do). Also, is this Zoe? You changed your handle, but I recognize the picture :)
Gross Science Argo is so cute! Yeah, puppies do that :) we got my dog when he was about one and a half years old (rescue), and he used to chew up shoes. Thankfully he doesn't do that anymore, but now he is almost 5 and still eats a lot of weird things. Yes this is Zoe :)
i've had my new pup for 6 months and she so far eatn $200 headphones $100 vapepen $70 phone $150 sunglasses, tv remote, my slippers,oh ya and poop but i still love her to death
I think it might have something to do with the heavy scent additives in doggy treats. A lot of this stuff doesn't break down in the gut and, well, if it smells like bacon going in it might smell like bacon going out. Flavor comes from smell, and a dog's sense of smell is much stronger than our own. To the dog, a treat's a treat, and for them it may be worthwhile to "go back for seconds."
I never thought of that. Our 7 year old lab started eating the poop of our shitzu. We give her treats for housebreaking. Going to try something else for a treat as a test.
This is why cats rule. They don't eat their own carefully ground grade A beef if they detect something wrong with it (and now I'm grasping at straws, because my cat does that and I have to believe it's because there's something wrong, otherwise she'd be a total jerk. Still better than a poop eater).
I had a dog that liked to drink it's own and other dogs pee, he also liked to lick my ears while I asleep (think he liked the ear wax). That's what I wanna know about, why they like those things.
This was very informative! I work at a shelter doing adoptions. A customer had asked me why did one of our puppies eat his poop, and this video totally answered that question. Haha
OK, my doh is addicted to eating cat turds from the litter box. The poop doesn't bother me, the litter does. Cat turds are to my dog what candy bars are to you. He refuses to stop. : (
Anna, my yellow Lab, Ginger, would eat the bunny turds on my lawn. Or clean the litter box if she got a chance. My mother had a Shetland Sheepdog who would poop, turn around and eat it. Gross! I certainly didn’t let Rosie lick my kids! Nice dog, very bad breath!
same here. my well fed, healthy older large dog likes cat and rabbit poop. she is not strongly food driven either. she will let her dog food meals sit around for while.
I have a 7 Momths old Shih tzu we bough not too long we have experience him eating his own poop and it not healthy for him, not sure if I should rehome him and look for another pup.
Yes, many - the main reason mice and rats are so dangerous is that they have evolved sharing close quarters with humans and as such tend to carry the pathogens that are most infectious to us. Because we share very similar physiology and genetics with them many viruses and pathogens have the opportunity to adapt and evolve to counter our own defenses - and then re-infect us with a modified 'super' pathogen. That is why they are historically linked to plague and epidemics and they are an excellent vector (path) of transmission between hosts that are too ill to be mobile, thereby able to host extremely virulent and deadly diseases as the pathogen doesn't require that its host remain healthy enough to move about or survive long.
I read that China didn't have problems with anorexia or bulimia before their citizens learned it from the west. With that in mind, please don't tell my dogs about canine copraphagia. This one time? We were making our own dogfood out of rice and beef broth and whatnot. Our basset hound took a dump, turn and sniffed it, and then started greedily reconsuming it...and that was the end of rice in her diet.
It would need to be an 8-10 hour video to do the topic justice... human sexuality is so radically different from what people in todays society believe it to be that pretty much every single aspect of what people think has to be corrected before you can even start talking about situations that arise at the fringes. It would be like going back in time to a culture where they believed the Earth to be a disc on the back of a turtle and trying to explain to them what happens near a black hole according to general relativity.
***** I've just studied human sexuality obsessively for 25+ years... that's what happens when your mom catches you looking at line drawings of human anatomy in a science book when you're 9 and responds by tearing the pages out of the book.
My dog is more into getting into the cat’s litterbox rather than eating his own. (I scoop the box every time I can but sometimes I just don’t know she’s used it until the dog comes trotting in with a cat turd in its mouth)
My dog exclusively eats cat poop. And it annoys me, because we have a ton of stray cats around the street, so I can't walk her without her rushing towards cat poop.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is that coprophagia is often a seasonal phenomenon that happens in the cold winter months. Nobody knows exactly why, perhaps it has to do with a lack of certain microorganisms in the dogs gut during the winter. More can be found here: www.dogpoopdiet.com/why-dogs-eat-poop/
This was quite unhelpful. Unless you don't mind having and therefore not removing poop around your property. I guess most people's problem is that their dogs eat other dogs' stool.
So what about dogs who don't eat their own poop but will eat any other animals poop? My sisters dog eats chicken poop, cat poop, lizard poop, frog poop. Really any he comes across except his own. And what's with the tampon eating? Her other one does that and that makes me even more sick because I mean at least poop comes from food.
Why do some people eat poop? I cannot get my head around that at all. My own smell can be repulsive while on the loo so what possesses anyone to eat it? This is a serious question, not sure if you would want to look into this though.
This is so cool hearing you also have a Spanish water dog considering how obscure the breed is! I have two and honestly they're the greatest dogs I have ever had
I heard it helps against a vitamin deficit; because dogs have short intestines, certain bacteria that would produce the vitamin produce them too late in the intestines and so the vitamins could not be ingested 'on the first cycle'
There is a fundamental problem with the first scenario presented. The idea that they poop away from their den in order to avoid re-ingesting larval parasites to avoid re-infecting themselves. That's not how parasites work. Parasites which must spend a period of development inside of a dog, and whose larva pass out of the dog in its stool, inherently need to NOT be in the dog in order to further develop. Were they able to continue development inside of the dog, there would be significant evolutionary pressure to never exit the dog via its feces in the first place. A related question: Why do some dogs eat CAT poop? I dogsit my friends female black labrador once or twice a year, and have a cat. I have to keep a close watch on the dog to make sure she does not sneak off to the cats litter box and go snacking. I've heard some people claim only female dogs do this, is that true? Any particular thing present in cat scat to get a dog motivated to eat it?
I used to dog walk a beagle who ate every scrap of poop it came across on every walk. I think it ate its own as well but it would eat every other dogs poo too. It was a disgusting dog. It loved rolling in dead things it came across too.
my dog sometimes eats other dogs poop and cat poop. Not all the time but I have to watch him if he's sniffing around or eating poop. And then all I hear is his stomach churning and gurgling and he has loose poop and eat grass. Any help!!!
My shih tzu bijon eats her poop only when she's indoors, from time-to-time; she's 3. I punish when she poops on the carpet and reward when she poops on the disposable wee-wee pad. Thoughts?
Love me the name Arlo. Great name for a pup. Before our divorce of 27 yrs of marriage. We had bought a puppy a Boston Terrier we named Maggie. I now live in a two bedroom condo in Lake Forest CA. Wish I had a home again were a dog could run and have fun all day long. Life does and gives what it does and so be it.
I always heard that the reason why dogs roll in poop and eat it is to blend in with prey animals whose poop they eat. Never seen a dog eat another dog's poop in my life just other animals like cats.
Lots of dogs eat other dogs' faeces. Lots of dogs also like rolling in cow dung. I used to have a Westie and he loved covering his lovely white fur in dark green smelly cow poo. I love dogs but a bit less poo in general would be a definite plus.
This video would have been great but I wish you had addressed the scenario where dogs have this insatiable desire to go and eat poop from the Kitty litter. You talk about dogs eating their own poop but What's up with that kitty litter box poop eating thing?
So my brother was taking a skat and he left real quick to give me some toilet paper and my dog ran in and started eating it what should I do very worried
I had two dogs a while back. One of them would poop while the other would be eating the poop while it's still hanging out of the pooping dogs butt. Yup.
My dog has excessive itching I have been giving her baths with dog shampoo for itching also keeping table scraps away from her I also have a pill fineness every day (apoquel)and feeding her skin sensitive food what can I do to stop this?
what about when your dog eats poop that isn't theirs? My dog will occasionally get out the front door and she runs to the neighbors yard where there's poop and eat it.. not sure if it's dog or cat poop. either way, why could she be doing this disgusting thing?
One time I had to urgently go poop while walking my dog so I went into the woods to go and next thing I knew it ate a whole chunk of it I almost upchucked. I had no idea dogs do this crap
My mother in laws Yorkie eats my English bulldogs poo. If you’ve ever seen an English bulldog poo you’ll know why this makes me gag. And my dog has a poo aversion. He takes a wife birth around even his own. It’s so so so gross.
Here's a question for gross science; why do people who want a pet go to breeders to get one? Its disgusting. Shelters across the republic are filled with wonderful dogs who need loving homes. How fucked up in the head do you have to be to go to a breeder or pet shop to 'buy' a companion animal? I look forward to your forthcoming videos.
