I have driven over THOUSANDS of kerbs in my racing career and they are different at every track.
You need to treat each kerb with respect as some can send you into the barrier if you get too greedy while others can be used to your advantage.
There are so many types of kerb, but I have never really stopped to think why they are so different or even why they are there in the first place.
So let’s get into it
There are five types of kerb I can think of:
They are:
Painted - these are straightforward. They are lines that are just painted onto the track with nonslip paint.
Standard - These are the most common. They are slightly raised, made of serrated metal and bolted to the ground.
.
Carpets - Not technically a “kerb” but part of the kerb structure and used more frequently in F1, so worth the mention. They are made of artificial grass, usually outside of the standard kerb. And are there to punish you if you go too wide, as they are VERY slippery, especially in the wet.
The problem with these are they have started to be paved and painted green to look like grass but aren’t anywhere near as slippery.
And as Mario Andretti once said - “if you pave it, I will drive over it.” Or as NASCAR drivers say - “if it’s grey - it’s okay”.
I would have to agree with Mario there - what’s the point of having paved green concrete? Just stick some grass there - if it isn’t broken, dont fix it.

It does absolutely nothing to prevent gaining an advantage. It's purpose is to slow down cars skidding towards the barriers. Remember, the current iteration of Le Castellet called "Paul Ricard HTTT" was never designed to host racing events. HTTT stands for High Tech Test Track. For years it was used for testing only, being essentially the safest track in the world, if you want to test an expensive road or race car and take it to its limits with no fear of writing it off. HTTT began hosting races only around a decade ago and owners began adding spectator areas.

They should have just kept slightly higher angle kerbs. Since 1998 they've been flattening kerbs way too much to the point that now most "kerbs" are just painted tarmac. @@paperplane1471 What an incredibly ignorant opinion. Sausage kerbs become a problem when a driver loses control of their car, inadvertently crashes into the kerb, and then gets launched into the air. Replacing sausage kerbs with gravel would have the same effect of limiting the track since it has no traction, nobody wants to drive over that. But if a car gets onto the gravel anyway it will slide into a wall or even a safe runoff area. This would greatly limit the potential for injury and reduce damage to the car/track.
@JohnnyDoeDoeDoe
@JohnnyDoeDoeDoe Год назад
@paper plane We don't need roll cages, helmets, or fire marshals, since racing is perfectly safe as long as drivers don't make mistakes right? There are countless examples of sausage curbs launching cars, let's not be naive about how dangerous they can be. Drivers make mistakes, especially in poor conditions and during overtakes, those mistakes shouldn't be lethal or put spectators at risk.
@hkr667
@hkr667 Год назад
The only reason sausage curbs were ever added is because drivers categorically cheat and drive off track. And since the FIA has no spine and doesn't dare penalize drivers, they get away with it. Literally in this video he mentions fake plastic turf, why not use that instead? If it's concrete and flat, it is going to be used as part of the track (even at the expense of penalties sometime). @s2t4i6n9e
@s2t4i6n9e Год назад
Kerbs only exist because grass doesn't hold up well under stress. At the the start its quite slippery and if you put a tire onto the grass on the exit of a corner, you'll exit the circuit and hit the wall. However, as the grass wears away leaving dirt, this becomes less of an issue and the corners' radius expands. At Monaco, the track ends where the walls begin leaving no safety margin. If, however, you penalize drivers five seconds for every kerb they use, they'll actually stay on the track.

The relatively new halo concept almost certainly saved his life, or at worst a broken neck when the car flipped and landed on the external barrier. Alex needed significant time off to recover. I actually bumped into him not long after in an Attic of a bar and had a good chat with the young man. He was still wearing a back brace but hidden under his clothes which he gladly showed off. Even though I had never met him before he was very generous with his time. Originally white and black striped but they were changed because it's easier to see red and white from a distance at speed. Also completely missing the point of costly track maintenance (which is much cheaper today), often pot holes would form off track during a race when the surrounding surface is grass or gravel. If a high powered car drives over the pot hole it'll loos traction on that wheel and can cause the car to spear of the track causing an accident. For a short period the car is effectively one wheel drive. Their accident trajectory is largely influenced if they have a limited slip or open centre differential.

TLDR .... "why are there kerbs".... answer "drivers being drivers" Thats about it. if you dont put proper consequences in...drivers will cheat at their own detriment

I feel like the potential of horrible things happening out weight the reasoning for Saugus curbs to exist. Cars becoming airborne off of curbs just shouldn't be a thing anymore. We have the technology to figure something else out that won't turn an F1 car, or any race car these days for that matter, into a flying huck of metal at excess speeds.

? ? ? What is wrong with the FIA? If sausage Kerbs are so dangerous then get rid of the stupid death traps. If every corner had Kerbs that the drivers could use to their advantage then it would make for so much more exciting racing with fast cornering.

Just replace the curbs with a light* curtain that detects if a driver crosses it. If you cross it, you lose 5 seconds lap time and get have to dinner with Raikokken but you just called off his pit stop a few seconds late.

The course has lines to demarcate the edge of the track surface. Just like in the coloring book, you are supposed to keep the car between those lines. I would like to see every road course on the planet use klang dots of a teardrop shape, where the low, pointy end is closest to the edge of the track and the height and width rise linearly away from that edge. If the car runs over the small end of the klang dot you get a small effect. If the car runs over the klang dots deeper into their rise then the car suffers greater consequences. If racing bodies are worried about cars getting launched into the air then they need to invest in Kevlar netting to catch airborn cars. Perhaps a flying car or two will convince cheating drivers that they should stay on the track surface after all.

I really hate when 90% of the tracks in any calendar are red and white, with red being the offender. Visually, it's like seeing a copy of the same track numerous times.

I’d like to see smaller bigger curbs and more grass before any runoff to punish people who can’t stay in the lines. It also fixes the poor FIA rule keeping

All kerbs have a purpose. They just need to be respected. On certain tracks a sausage kerb on the exit of certain corners have proven to stop cars from over running the track but also giving them an advantage as they can really keep a massive amount of rubber, so rubber on rubber just gives more grip

I say get rid of sausage curbs at least for formula racing because all they do is break drivers backs. Of course you can just not take them but there were cases where they couldnt be avoided because of track position and crashes.

I have to agree with using grass and/or gravel to mark the edge of the race track behind a kerb. Since we started using tarmac and extending kerbs we have had track limits issues every single race, and I'm fed up with it to be honest. If we returned to grass and gravel and mandated a kerb could only be half a F1 car in width we could get rid of all of these at a stroke It would also make circuits look nicer to look at. When I started watching F1 in the mid nineties, they all looked really nice. With the increasing amount of tarmac and coloured bits everywhere this is no longer the case. Paul Ricard for instance with it's 3 squillion layouts and coloured stripes looks bloody awful. It's the ugliest race track in the world bar none
@ATEC101
@ATEC101 Год назад
Unfortunately, you did not think this through. Drivers will purposely bring dirt and gravel back onto the circuit to screw everyone else, especially during qualifying. It used to be a standard tactic, especially on corner exit since you are fully committed at that time. Drivers are a$$holes, especially highly paid ones that don't have to fix the cars. I am an owner, mechanic and driver of a POS club racing car. The owner and mechanic always call the driver an a$$hole.
@reptongeek

@@ATEC101 I have thought this through. After every F1 race there is always some track limits controversy and on forum pages various methods like induction loops and sensors and other electronic methods are discussed to stop drivers crossing the line. Now multiply that over the whole year. Grass and gravel provide a natural boundary and a deterrent from going too far, in other words retirement from a session or the race

IMO every track should have 3 foot tall concrete walls all the way around. Flirt with track limits at your own risk. Stay on the track, or eat wall.
@mrthiefy

so then just get rid of curbs and have an actual curb that you can't drive over and then you will be on the racing line as that is the only way you have to go. then you can't take half of your car over the edge of the racing line. which to me is just cheating the corner.

I don't like the gravel argument because depending on the car, gravel can cause a car to launch as well. Not as spectacularly, but still.
