Why Do Goalies Hunch Over Like This? 

Poor posture caused by years of carrying the team!😂

That's the goalie equivalent of sitting on the bench

I found a spider crawling by my crease on the ice so I put him in the net. Said “I’m going to protect you my guy. Nothings going into happen in there.” Long story short, I did not. He died first period.

Goalie for 10 years here ... they're "resting" for a bit 😊

Its the good ol' contemplating why you play goalie position

From the brief couple years I played goal….it’s just comfortable and took the tension out of my lower back when leaning on my pads lol. You’re lumbar area gets tired standing in thar crease in a slight forward lean lol, not to mention when you’re set up for a shot

It takes pressure off our legs to we do it after we use our legs for awhile

I do that cause its almost like sitting down. You can rest your elbows on your pads and the pads will keep you standing with legs relaxed

For guys that take it seriously it's because it's easier to breath when you are hunched over so I personally do it just to take like a deep breath because it is hard to make saves you have been breathing hunched over after a run or something and to clean our minds so we can completely target on making saves

As a goalie I can confirm we all do that

I do that and kneel on my left knee and use my stick as a rest. It’s just comfortable and gives us a break from standing. BECAUSE UNLIKE YOU, SKATERS. WE CANT SIT

Goalies are so weird I don't even know if he is joking.

From what I gather, this pose is a resting pose for Goalies, helping to relieve stress on their back or is generally a relaxing stance. I can see why as Goalies are always active and must be vigilant.

The real reason is that we are simply getting comfortable me especially I broke my back 3 years ago so when I get a chance to hunch over it’s to take weight of my shoulders

We do this because we’re tired

It's a comfortable resting position and way for me to re-center my focus.

I used to play and there is a couple reasons one getting into the zone and focusing and calming your mind and then it's also a rest position you can tuck your forearms on top of leg pads and kind of lean into it

Incase anyone actually is curious about the real reason. It’s a strategy to get/stay focused

Box goalie here, but when I do I am resting my back. Most goalies I know who dehydrate in the sun when we play outside get back spasms then hamstring stress. This position might subconsciously be good at resting their back too.

The weirdest thing...since Ive watched this video. Ive noticed a dead fly on the ice almost every game for my regular pick up sessions. Im playing in an 9k capacity semi pro rink.

I did it to put myself in a position to react quicker to a shot that was either high or on the ice.

When I first started playing goalie it was literally because "Every goalie I have ever seen does it so therefore it is clearly a secret goalie thing and I must do it too even though I don't know why." :P Now it's easier to breathe and helps with the lower back.

I do this so I can see the places where my feet need to be, and so I can relax my back and body

I used to do this a lot coming up. Now though since i’ve been put out to pasture in the beer leagues i prefer to lean back on the net and spread the arms out and just chill.

I use it as a reset kind of to rest my back and legs and also when doing it before games its like mental preparation
