That's what the millennials have been saying about all Harley's for years have no technology ,. We want technology .. we can't ride without technology.. well you can't say that now can you .. Harley's got high technology your millennial education will never be able to figure out .. but you y gens still say Harley's are like tractors , another common mistake , as John Deere tractors are tuned and monitored from outer space with a John Deere satellite in tidal lock with the rotation of earth so it's constantly right over your head watching everything you try to do to "their tractor" and if you try and turn up the smoke screw on the diesel pump your John deere will give you 30 seconds to put your modification back to stock the John Deere satellite will shut your tractor forever so it will never start up again until you pay John Deere to type into your ECU the correct codes so it will run again and at the same time your warranty is completely canceled on this $250,000 buck rig forever ..so you might as well find yourself a different hobby cause you will never afford farming again ,,, and it's coming boys and girls thanks to all you millennials who keep crying for more tech-no-lo-gyeeeeee wize walley why won't our new bike start up ? I don't know bev you didn't do any thing to it did you bev ? All I done was install an S&S air filter and a set of those S&S thunder pipes ! That's it then bev we might as well go buy a new bike rather than pay a $100 million bucks to have this one to restart ... Hey walley let's shoot down the sat with that big gun Eddie hasçle's got ... Won't work bev...why not walley ? Eddie's gone bev along with the gun the house And his bike all that left of Eddie is a big hole in the ground ... Seems the sats shoot back.... DAAAD don't bother him bev dad lost his car today . So I agree. I had a 99/2000 Honda Super Blackbird CBR1100 with CBS ( combine breaking system ) . It was the world's fastest production motorcycle at the time. So Mr Honda decided if a newbie got out of control and hit the front brakes some of the rear would also come on ( like a 70/30 split in breaking force ) to keep the motorcycle in line and not get out of shape . Now I'm no Valentino rossi BUT after 47 and counting years in the saddle I want my front and rear to work Independently of one another. Example, if I went into a corner at speed just before the bend and tryed to scrub off some speed the bike would SIT UP and want to continue straight. 😵‍💫 See Honda didn't take into account people like me might actually push the bikes limits and this happened to me on a couple of occasions. So much so I took the plumbing sorry system off and Reverted back to independent front and rear brakes. 🤙😎🇬🇧🇺🇸

If you want safety, get a car. This sounds mean, but no matter what safety gadgets you put on a two-wheeled, one-track vehicle, it remains a health hazard. The only gadget which should control this thing has to be you. If you are not fit enough, if you are a daredevil, you should not be on this thing. Period.

I agree. I'm sure they could have a feature that drives it for us, which then begs the question, what's the point of riding? To me the whole point of riding and satisfaction one receives, is that YOU are the one taming the beast.
@robbieoneil5945
@robbieoneil5945 4 месяца назад
@ SandraOrtmann1976, Ah, where do You get the idea that a two wheeled Vehicle like a Motorcycle is only a one track vehicle? is it because they only have 2 wheels in a configeration of one directly behind the other? I'm a Motorcyclist with over 47 & a half years of riding experience which also includes11 & a half of those years as a Volunteer Motorcycle Instructor in that time so I'd like to pass on a little concept to You that We also used to teach in our Motorcycle Safety courses, this is something that not many People, including Motorcyclists, think about, until it's pointed out to them, even experienced Motorcyclists who have been riding for years, Ok, lets get into it, Ya see the front wheel is'nt a fixed object, it can be turned left & right as well as straight ahead & also be turned to full lock on both the left & right sides of the Bike so when the Bike goes around a bend in the road or turns a corner, it's not like a Car where the back wheels automattically follow the same track as the front wheels, on a Motorcycle, because of the lean angle of the Bike, the back wheel follows a track of it's own, which is to the outside of the front wheel whether the Bike is turning left or right, this concept is called outtracking because of the position of the back wheel when cornering, the only time it follows the same line as the front wheel is when the Bike is being ridden in a straight line so when a Motorcyclist goes around a bend or a corner, if He, or She, thinks about where the back wheel is in relation to the front wheel it makes for a much smoother manouver in the turn so the next time that You're behind a Motorcyclist & they take a bend or a corner, take a look at where their back wheel is in relation to where their front wheel is & You should be able to see that the back wheel is taking a wider track to the outside of where the front wheel is, I hope that this helps.

I work at a dealer so I ride a ton of different bikes.. I also daily an older Harley (2015) in every possible weather condition short of snow unless it starts snowing when I'm out.. my current bike has ABS, which has never once activated even while doing some emergency braking because someone cut me off.. I've owned multiple older bikes and they've never had ABS or traction control.. I spent quite a bit of time practicing hard braking.. spent more time practicing controlling the bike if the back tire locks up.. put me in just about any situation and I'll brake just up to the point of locking them up without actually locking them up.. the only exception was the one time I got stuck riding in snow.. I actually locked up the rear brakes once but it was fine because I had practiced for it.. Ill take my years of experience over some computer any day of the week

One of the rider aids is it will retard your speed in a corner if it senses too much speed. That will put you into oncoming traffic on a two lane road. @Man_Emperor_of_Mankind

That's not how they work, they don't care how fast you take the corner. They monitor the difference in speed between the wheels. The equipment uses that information to discourage the back end from outrunning the front end so far that it's likely for the rider to end up in an unrecoverable situation. In all reality, as long as the system is setup correctly, the rider should never notice it is there unless they do something really dumb and is later trying to figure out how they managed to maintain control. Skill has nothing to do with it, humans don't have the reaction time to do what modern stability control systems do

You no longer have immediate impulse response to those controls now the computer does it similar to antilock breaking when it first came out for people who knew how to drive rear wheel drive in snow it suddenly changed everything and it may have helped many people who do not know how to drive those who do most certainly lost control of their vehicles unfortunately, as much as I see the computer generative properties benefiting those who do not drive it most certainly causes a reckless situation for those who could otherwise control the machine correctly regrettably all of these advances do not help the seasoned driver, but rather inhibit them therefore it should be an automatic switch that can immediately shut those off upon request. I am old-school I’ve been doing this for decades. My modern motorcycle 23MT 10 has all of the aids and I love it because that means not only does it have my back but I can set it up the way I want depending on how I’d like to ride! I mean seriously who wouldn’t want to have five different levels of wheelie control alone :-) it really is quite impressive on modern ride by wire motorcycles. I don’t necessarily disagree with the comment below mine. However, you can also turn all of the aids off if you don’t want them. Personally, from somebody who’s been riding since the early 1980s, I love the flexibility.

It's great if you have full control over the system. I was raised ole school and was taught in the old trade of automotive engineering SAE AIME and I started to pick up the attitude and narrative of the old boys about modern electronics but I ended up in auto performance, custom and race cars, boats and bikes... Tell you what, after I got my hands on a REAL fully programmable ECU, I was an instant convert, got kicked out of the ole boys club lol. Had a customer keep coming back asking to set the rear geometry in different ways because he said it was stepping out more than it should. I actually did geometry setups for world class motor sport for a time, so I've got a reasonable idea what I'm doing and with good explanation of the drivers experience on track I could usually nail the setup straight away, but I couldn't see the problem on this one... The third time he came back, I set it how he wanted to try next but by that time I'd gained a better picture of how he was driving and that the 500 hp was a recent upgrade from the previous lesser 200 odd from stock. So I said try that but next time you come back, bring the hand programmer for your ECU. A week later he came back, he said nothing, handed me the keys and the programmer. I put the car up and set the rear geometry back to almost where he had it originally, then plugged in and dialled up the throttle sustain. He called me a week later and exclaimed "Your a fxyzing legend!" Yep I love tech. In all honesty my time in the game ended a decade ago and my opinion of tech appearing on bikes was sketchy but you ride, you approve so I'm guessing some bugs have gone LOL. I built my ex wife the most incredible sleeper that had things I've still not seen anyone do 20 years later, but my point is I had to settle for 3 present configurations (The glove box opened to reveal a laptop with full telemetry and live engine condition and management mouse pad no touch screen.. over 20 yrs now bro gime a break lol) because I realised something very early in testing... remembering what options were on and what was off!!! Another issue surrounding the new improved Rider Aids on new Harley-Davidsons is as follows. Harley-Davidson is adding these AIDS to motorcycles whether you want them or not. It is no longer an option, so you're paying for add-ons which adds to the higher cost of the new bike whether you choose to use them or not. What is developing now is those who desire the rider aids may now be required to pay added monthly fees to HD to benefit from the use of the rider aids. it is one thing to spend $40,000 for a new motorcycle with the rider aids, and then be required to pay monthly fees to the dealership for the use of the abs system, traction control, etc. These technological advancements (rider aids) incorporated into each new HD should be included in the purchase price of the bike for those who want them, and not require ongoing payments from the customer afterward for their use.

3 things 3 most important things to me on riding a motorcycle. Slow down in the curves. If you can't see further than your driving, you're gonna get in trouble. What does that mean in english at 30 miles an hour? You should be able to see 90 feet in front of you minimum. If you can't see what's 90 feet in front of you look up or slow down. At 60 miles an hour it's not 90 feet anymore. It's not a 180 feet. It's 270 feet minimum. If you don't have 270 feet of clear road in front of you. You're gonna get surprised by something in the middle of the dangling lane across it that you didn't see because you were too close to the car in front of you. Slow dfinally. Don't rely on that rear break.I'm not saying mash to front break only whenever you have to break in a hurry.Combine the rear brake with down.Shifting believe it or not down shifting is your friend when you have to stop in a hurry. And balance your front brake with all of that stopping power. Now somebody out there is goingna tell me breaking and downshifting is gonna put. Massive amounts of stopping on the rear tire and it's gonna skid. No, it's not it's gonna Bunny. You'll have a moment where it's kids. And in another moment we're grabbed a moment where it's kids and then it grabs back-and-forth until you get to a speed appropriate for that down shift gear.. I have had people cut me off and slam on their brakes. And fortunately there was a police car right behind me. Cause he pulled them over, called me over and asked me how I stopped so fast. Cause I was stopping faster than a motorcyclist, supposed to be able to stop actually faster than the car which had left skid to skids on 4 tires. And I told him down. Shifting as the automatic anti-lock brake for old motorcycles. Keep it shiny keep it right side up.

Cornering antilock braking system C-ABS does allow the biker more control stopping on a curve, but has its limitations. The old school, before and after ABS, straighten the bike, smoothly apply rear to load the front wheel and instantly the front still works when applicable. It’s always a recommended practice that both brakes are used for normal stopping, it becomes muscle memory in event of an emergency stop. You can lightly apply front as well as rear brakes in a turn to slow without C-ABS but practice. What C-ABS does not prevent the tire's total loss of traction due the size the patch of gravel, oil, sand, grass, etc. Harley’s Road Guide and Honda’s Gold Wing touring bikes with their low ground clearance have been videoed on the Tail of the Dragon, being dropped on a curve due to excessive lean, the bike’s frame hits the road, sparks fly, it lifts the bike, and tires lose traction. Most are loaded and have a pillion on board.

For those of us who DO know how to ride AND wrench the tech bloat is an annoyance because the bikes are already overweight and complex. (A Sportster weighs near as much as an FXR big twin of yore, and M8 swaps into the much lighter FXR chassis are common to ditch that weight. Of course new owners are wealthy enough to trade before wearing anything out so that may not pose a problem in the short term, but newer bikes are mostly wretched to wrench.

For me, I grew up on dirt bikes and motorcycles that previously did not have these new “rider aids.” Through the years I’ve learned how to control a bike when drifting or sliding or jumping. Insert new technology and the bike becomes unpredictable. The systems don’t allow a natural reaction from the bike, nor help my experience in those situations. I feel less confident and comfortable when I’m reacting to the bike vs. it to me.

Snatch a front break in a corner with or without sand will result in a low-side. No electronics are going to help you with that. Ask me how I know…I used to have my roadracing license and raced for 12 years at tracks all over the country. The result of grabbing front brakes holds true on a racetrack or public roads. Add sand on the surface to the equation and you have about a zero shot of pulling out of it.

I remember the first time I tried antilock brakes after years of experience and close calls with conventional brakes. Thinking back, intellectually I know the car stopped quicker. But my heart remembers the incredible unease of that pedal vibrating under my foot. Of course I got used to it, and the tech got smoother too. We’ll get there, it just takes time.

I could see anti lock brakes on the front being very helpful even as a flat tracker and sliding all the time and loosing the front wheel is the worst. As long as you have front tire control the back can kinda just do whatever, slide drift, whatever you want to call it, it’s actually weight transfer, and if used correctly will help slow you down. Remember a Harley is a 700 lbs machine minimum. We race 200 lbs twins making double the power. The extra weight is a lot harder to control than you think.

It's one of those things, if you get it you get it, and if you don't, your not qualified to judge another man's opinion and understand that he has a right to his own opinion, just as he has the right of pride in commanding his machine through trials that a real rider will face in their time on the road. There are some things that are sacred in our control, and it has nothing to do with controlling anyone else, just our own personal freedoms that we lose more and more of every day! The reason for objection is complex but at the same time, very simple. as I said if you get it, you get it!

Ive been riding for 45 years. I want to ride because I'M riding and dont want anybody or anything else to interfere with my ride. Riding a bike is all about alertness, expierience ability, freedom and being in the elements, if I want to be safe I play computer games or go to bed (although most people die in bed! Most dangerous place to be!? Thinker that!?) Making bad decisions has bad consequenses and a bike is one major tool to learn that concept. Risk is part of life, is the truth. REAL WORLD stuff, you know?

Honestly i feel like its about time HD cought up with all the other manufactures. The sport bike world has had these features for years. You're not suppose to set it while riding. You set it before the ride so your brale assist and TC is to your liking for the terrain you're about to ride. I haven't messed with HDs set up, but the metrics is just one button to switch to rain mode. Let off the throttle, hit the button, and go. Now your TC is maxed out, engine power is reduced, and ABS is maxed. Makes it easier to control yourself during a surprise downpour.

My friend just got screwed up on one of these last week. Moose was on the road on a blind corner. He tried to dump the bike and slide, but the bike wouldnt let him and the bike fought to stay upright. He ended up getting bounced off the bike as it went into the ditch and broke his neck while the bike kept on putting along and was found an eighth of a mile down the way in the ditch.

When I was looking at touring bikes with ABS, it occurred to me that I should review under what circumstances does ABS engage. In every case ABS does NOT engage if the bike is leaned into a corner, by design. ABS engaged only on straight line applications. People who pay extra for ABS tend to be more cautious; therefore, data showing ABS makes a motorcycle safer is actually an artifact of selection bias in the data. The most important motorcycle safety system is rider experience and attention.

The biggest issue is a lot of people hop on the bike and barely get any training and assume because they can ride on the highway and up and down the road. They are proficient at biking. On top of the fact that the more safety aids on the bike, the more new riders are going Depend on those aids to correct bad habits they have formed that they aren’t aware are bad habits

These aids are the worst for experienced riders used to older machines, makes the bike feel disconnected and unpredictable. Sure they add a safety net, but you can still break the net. The thing that ruins the experience though is that the bike is constantly not doing what you try to make it do. Tc and abs will make it harder to lowside the bike as a beginner, but it will not make the bike capable of magically railing a corner when you enter too fast. Just takes away the warnings you get on the previous corner when you almost went too fast.

These old Harley riders do have a problem, it’s the fact they ride Harley’s. The rider aids on bikes that aren’t antiquated work well and can mostly be disabled if they so choose. ABS is lifesaving in some situations even for experienced riders and has reduced accidents on the road.

What you described is the intention of these systems. Yes they do work. Although I have two counter points. These systems can make an inexperienced rider over confident and cause them to have an unavoidable crash because of poor judgement. 75% of being a safe rider is judgement and 25% is controlling the bike. There's no substitute for experience. Not even anti lock brakes and traction control. Second point. While I do like my antilock brakes, I really hate having my freedom and fun taken away by factories forcing their traction control on me. I am not allowed to switch it off and keep it off. Even when you turn it off, it turns itself back on, every time the bike is started. It really ruins the performance of the bike. The rider should have the choice to keep it off. The biggest problem is how traction control puts riders at risk of being hit by passing cars. For example, I see I'm coming through some nice mountain roads but my traction control is there to spoil my fun. The bike will only disengage traction control, when fully stopped. So I'm am inclined to stop in the corners, with limited shoulder to disengage the traction control (unsafe), or just skip the enjoyment of riding my bike without the Nanny control. Motorcycles are inherently dangerous. Let's keep them that way. Go buy a Volvo if you want to stay safe.
