I’ll have like 2 or 3 months of feeling more so happy and in love with my partner but it only takes one uncomfortable or triggering thought to send me back into a “Is this right for me? Maybe I should leave, Maybe we don’t actually pair well, am I even happy?” And it’s so stupid bc I know the answers to all those questions but I just get anxious still, so annoying

I have thought that I have ROCD for a year now. It started when my boyfriend and I were moving to a new city together to study. I had constant thoughts about "what if we break up", "do I love him?", "do I want to have sex with him". My brain was constantly working against me and I went into a depression. After six months I started seeing a psychologist who said I had obsessive thoughts. Her therapy didn't quite work for me so I stopped. During the summer when I moved back home and didn't have the stress of school, I didn't feel any obsessive thoughts. my feelings for my boyfriend started to come back again and I was very happy. When I was about to move back again and started stressing about exams, they came back and were quite pushy. My head went "break up, break up, break up". I went to a new psychologist, but now she says that it's not obsessive thoughts, but just that I'm afraid to break up and that I don't really love him. I began to believe it even more. My gut told me to break up with him, but I was in a vulnerable situation where I didn't want to make a choice. After the psychology class, I just lay in bed and cried. I felt very cold and nauseous. Now I can't do anything and feel numb all over. I'm really in pain. I don’t know what to do

What's your reason to stay with him? I had something similar once and after I broke up I had so much relief, improvement of my mental health and overall increased happiness. I suppose in my gut feeling sensed a form of danger that I couldn't see. I stayed with that person also in the hopes for who they 'could be', she was also working a lot on herself. But they never might be and we need to accept them who they are. I'm not saying that you should break up. My bf out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago said that he could do this anymore thy he felt like he is living a lie and everything hasn’t been real up to now. We had been dating for about 4 months and he had asked me to be his gf about a week before and said about meeting friends etc moving forward. He has told me before he was falling for me and that he was so lucky to have found me I make his life better etc etc. He said similar things the last time I saw him and was really happy and loving etc in how he was towards me. 2 days later he said he couldn’t do it anymore because it all feels like a lie. He said I give him everything he has ever wanted from someone and he wants more than anything for me to be the one and to fall in love with me but he cant. I had contamination OCD since I was 10 and the compultion to check locks etc. I had no idea about this subset of OCD. Our relationship does have problems but I think because I have learned to give less energy to worry about germs/locks (I thought my OCD was getting better) it has really just evolved to this. What you’re experiencing right now is fear and anxiety. This is common with relationship, anxiety, and relationship OCD. Intrusive thoughts are fear-based thoughts that cause a lot of doubt and uncertainty. Then they’re often followed by compulsions, ways to get certain to your relief, like, avoidance, rumination, seeking reassurance, and more. It can be confusing, but learning about what’s going on and how to rewire your brain around this can shift everything so you can have a happy, healthy relationship. I’ve done it and you can too!

You probably misunderstood what I said, I OCD can happen anytime, there’s no one size fits all. That being said, if you want to learn what to do with these intrusive thoughts, so that they no longer bother you, check out the link in the video description.

My ocd focuses on what if I’m being abused by him and I’m in denial or I will take something he said and make it seem so big does anyone have advice on this for ocd and not being able to tell if your being abused or not? My partner is very sweet and loving but when I was a child I was abused and I feel like I should know what abuse looks like but I really can’t tell and it’s trying to make me breakup and there isn’t really anything he does and if there’s something like a dumb argument my brain goes crazy

I’m wondering, how do I bring up this concern to my therapist?
@sorarussell

What if there are genuine issues in the relationship? I love my partner but I feel that many of my themes revolve around real issues we have. For example, he is a jokester and his jokes have made me uncomfortable and hurt my feelings. We’re both 18 and I’m aware we’re still learning and growing but how can I help myself see things clearer and understand how much of it is the ocd and what are my genuine thoughts and feelings?

If you’re obsessing about this, followed by compulsions, OCD is attaching to it. When OCD attaches, it exaggerates things that may or may not bother you otherwise. When you learn how to respond differently, and quiet OCD, it may not even bother you. If it still does, then you can handle it from a healthy place, and not an unhealthy place which OCD causes you to stay in.

I also realize my extremely lucky to have him 😭❤️ but I feel awful for putting him through this and I wanna break up with him to set him free from me being crazy twice a month he’s so good at reassuring me and talking me down which actually sometimes annoys me in the moment but I appreciate later My thought is that if he’s willing to stay and be patient and we work through this together after awhile I should be able to relax and not have those thoughts of leaving from fear Especially from my last relationship in my head it was leave before you get left if you initiate the break up it will hurt less

Why do i have this? A childhood trauma? Which one?
@MyOCDCoach
@MyOCDCoach 2 года назад
Scientifically we don’t know. It’s believed that it’s a combination of genetics, and other learn behaviors like avoiding discomfort, and anxiety. Life experiences can play a part, but I know people who have had worse experiences than me then that don’t have OCD. Trying to figure out the root of the problem, or why you have OCD, often becomes a compulsion. Even if we knew why, it wouldn’t make a difference. We have to learn to use ERP in the moment.

@@MyOCDCoach Thank you. I asked why because i think identifying the problem and knowing the reasons help me to get through of it. I personally experienced this many times about my other psychological issues. Of course only knowing itself doesnt help, we need to work on ourselves.

@@MyOCDCoach thank you. I had this 20 years ago, it's paralyzing. Every relationship it came back and now it's back stronger. I just keep thinking " I need to break up and imagine telling her. The feeling i get then is like a hot iron melting through the inside of my body and I also it in my head. It's a extremely intense feeling and I'm used to a lot I've had like 500 panic attacks hospital multiple times. But this is like I can taste it. I hope I can get over this because I think I'm buying a small mountain house and sitting there alone forever.

How does one do an ERP session for break up urges? Could someone give me an example?
@MyOCDCoach
@MyOCDCoach 2 года назад
I would have to talk to you more to fully explain. Short answer - whatever the thought or fear is, you allow uncertainty and don't respond to the thought/fear (response prevention) by not doing mental or physical compulsions.

I broke up with my gf and didn’t want to. I broke down so bad in tears and I still cry over her a lot. We haven’t cut contact. We still talk everyday and want each other .I don’t even know what’s wrong with me anymore. I’m scared to date cause I don’t want the intense anxiety anymore but I miss her and want her in my life. Does this sound like something your coaching could help? I don’t wanna waste my time and money. I’m a college student and am nervous about therapy
@MyOCDCoach
@MyOCDCoach Год назад
Absolutely. Breaking up is just the avoidance compulsion to escape the discomfort, but it doesn’t help. And actually reinforces the fear and anxiety will come back in the future with somebody new. I can teach you what to do in response to the thoughts so that they stop bothering you and they stop coming so often this is an important skill you’ll use for the rest of your life.
