Cantonese is already kind of hard to learn and with the slang it can be more difficult to listen for those things. Thanks new gen for the confusion! Olivia, can you do more lessons on popular slang words that y’all use so I can be aware? Thanks!

In North Vietnam's Vietnamese we also have "L and N" problem but it's about local accent so as I think that's also the mainland and hongkong accent if it's not right don't blame me please

I would say there is a sound shift going on, L to N, NG is dropped.

Greetings Olivia. I have a question. How does the Cantonese tone work in music? Went getting familiar with a language I immerse myself in the music of that particularl language. Olivia's Insights on this would be nice😉 Thanks. Luv the channel and Vids, especially the ones your in❤

That's an excellent question and I would like to know the answer too !!!!...I'm a musician myself and played brass instruments for 12 years. I begin Mandarin classes at my college this fall and chose Mandarin because I found tonal languages interesting . I thought my background in music would help me but I found out it really doesn't, that and my low voice are really making it difficult to speak properly and be understood.

Thank you for your comment! That's a great question!👍 I always think that Hong Kong lyricists are geniuses. They have to use the right words with the right tones according to the melody while making sure the sentences make sense. 林夕 (Albert Leung) and 黃偉文 (Wyman Wong) are two of the most famous lyricists in Hong Kong. Check out their work when you have time :) Team CantoneseClass101.com

Lol yes if you want to speak properly Canto then you pronounce the N or how folks talk in olden days. If you wanna sound Hong Kong and hip then pronounce the L lol. Roman Tam a famous singer enunciates his words. Listen to his songs and it will help out to speak proper Canto. 😀

I some times hear 'hai6' (is, to be) pronouced as 'hay' as well as 'high'. Likewise, ngo5 dei6 (we) as 'orh dee' and 'orh day'. And also 'ni1 dou6' (here) as nee dough and lee dough! ALSO ho2 nang2 (perhaps, maybe) as hor lang.

It happens! Try to assign a different color to the languages, and when you study/review/speak the language, think of the specific color. That might help distinguish between each other :) Team CantoneseClass101.com

I think ngoi3 for 愛 is widely acceptable as standard pronunciation just oi2 for 曖 is more common than oi3

Thank you for your comment! As mentioned in the video, ngoi3 is the overcorrected variation, the correct pronunciation of 愛 is oi3. However, native speakers are not fussy about that at all in casual speech. Team CantoneseClass101.com
