My daughter can converse back & forth relatively well; however scripts at a VERY high rate. I chalked it up to her being & only child. Thank you so much for this information 🤍
What I call scripting is actually quite different. It's usually me preparing some sentences for when I am already overwhelmed and but need to say things. E.g. when I am in a shop and want to buy something but am already in sensory overwhelm, I go through the sentences I will say in my head beforehand because I know I won't be able to make them up as I go.
So glad you commented! I see my son scripting when he cannot form his own words BUT is able to convey a meaning to me with someone else's words or a phrase from a movie. I use to think these phrases meant nothing but he was actually teaching himself how to say the phrases and it took him years to begin to use them in the correct situations. What I thought was idle stemming was a self taught mechanism of communication for someone who can not else wise communicate on his own. When he does speak on his own he looses are attention because their is a HUGE delay in between his words (like minutes!!).
Yes I feel like I can only speak through Social Scripting. Between having a fairly robust bank of scripts in my head, and being a able to script on the fly to some extent I'm able to pass as someone who speaks normal although is kind of quiet, but I'm not sure if I'm ever capable for true spontaneous speech.
Hello Mary , would love to spend a week in your presence watching you work. Hard ole slog. I am a teacher's aide with a little friend with level 3 autism--we certainly struggle. However the delayed echolalia came out the other day and sounded very appropriate and funny. When leaving school with her mum after a not good daymy little friend said " let's get out of here". Haha. I cracked up. Went back inside and told my principal and she said that I say that all the time. So there you go. Love your videos.
My son is 9. He is verbal but not conversational. He scripts constantly, but he uses the scripting in correct context. Should I really try to make him stop scripting! Will that reduce his language?
If he is using it functionally that is good. Never stop teaching him new vocabulary though and try to teach him more novel language. My free video workshops may help bit.ly/2ELvSnM . Language can get complex to teach!
Our 7 year old is named Lucas as well. He was diagnosed at 3. My heart broke that day, but Lucas has mended it each and every day since. He scripts "we're going on a bear hunt" and a lot of Sesame Street content. But tries to get everyone around him to participate ... In his after school program, he has all the kids scripting along with him. He also uses the first person when referring to himself. As in "Lucas has an idea" or "hey that's Lucas's toy"... I blame Elmo for that lol. Love him so much, wouldn't change him if I could. But want the best future for him that is possible. He is smarter than I was at his age.
awe Im right with you on diagnosis. My heart strings were very much tugged. I hung the call up with her ped. Psych as due to covid was a telemed call and i finally let it all out. I sucked it back while on the call as best i could. ITs not tears of mad or tears of sad, i told myself our journey will be a bit tough but we got this. Im with you on the feels. all positive vibes praying for you.

My daughter is 5. She has a speech delay so when she was around 4 she started really using a lot of words finally...but recently I realize she is repeating any show or adult she may hear things from. I'm realizing now that it's not a stage in her speech development but rather what you are covering in this video. With her tho.. I'd say at least 50% of the time what she is scripting pertains to the activity she is doing. She also really only tends to script when she is alone doing her playtime. She comprehends greatly when I ask her things but it's her not being able to answer me properly that hold her back. We didn't start thinking she had some type of autism till about this last year. She has her last screening in mid December and I just can't wait to get her a diagnosis to get her going on proper treatment. Love your channel. Thank you

Yes they are helping me exspecially around Christmas time events. My son is 11 now becoming agitated and behavior problem. Hes been great last 2 months kicking and yelling at me can you give advice i tell him to stop while im fetting him ready for school.
My sons stims and scripts at very high rates mainly on his down time when he is watching tv or on the tablet. I took this as him learning BUT My main concern is that he remembers it all and it seems like he’s talking to himself a lot Throughout the day. So he’s not using it in a functional way
Great thanks for this video!!! My daughter scripts at extremely high rates, she also stimms at extremely high rates. She switches between conscious modes and stimmng modes and may stay in stimming and scripting mode ( repeating phrases over and over again) for prolonged times. I was asking neurologists to investigate if these are seizures. A few times these were pre-seizure behaviours which were followed by collapses. These were rare single cases when it end up with real seizures, but often stimming/ scripting mode just stays for prolonged times and she returns to consciousness only for short periods of time and back to stimming. These are caused by sleep problems (even if she sleeps the deep sleep phases are missing, have done encephalography sleep monitoring) and by stress. Encephalography did not show she suffers epilepsy. I am wondering if this is PANDA (something you mentioned in another video)?Maybe Beta blockers could help. Here in UK medical investigations for such children are almost unavailable, but I should chase if I could roughly guess what it is.
My younger brother kept constantly scripting (repeated) himself everyday for more than a decade. My parents and I tried everything we can to help him reduce, but now it’s completely impossible.
Does an ABA therapist typically make a referral for a speech and language pathologist to evaluate a child when they demonstrate delayed or disordered language?
Usually a child has had SLP evaluations through early intervention or their autism assessment. Some BCBA would refer out to speech if the child has a lot of articulation or swallowing issues. So the answer is, it depends on the child and the clinicians expertise.
My daughter just turned 2 years old. She repeats her favorite parts of Winnie the Pooh, songs, & books (word for word) a lot. I thought it was great at first. She talks and sings her ABCs and counts to 20. The doctor said it was fine, but the amount of time she repeats/copies TV shows or book stories has started to worry me. Then I googled it and now I'm scared. Not sure what to do. I don't want her labeled as something if this really is normal toddler behavior, yet I don't want to wait then they tell me later it was a major sign. Can you give examples of what too much scripting is? One example is Almost EVERY time she goes down the slide she has to sing the "going down the slide song" from a RU-vid kids video. Should I worry?
yes this sounds like scripting . does she communicate her wants and needs? It is concerning if they speak in scripts but not functionally. Check out cdc.org for developmental milestones.
@@smericka100 I had her evaluated for speech, and they said she has great speech. She did always use her words to communicate as well. She is 3 now and is doing well. Has advanced speech. Does daydream like I did as a child, so maybe has ADD like me. 😁 She is a happy child.

Recently I have heard about gestalt language processing which is learnt through scripting in stages and this is also an evidence based practice..It looks like this contradicts ABA/Vincent three button theory...Can you also make a video about natural language acquisition versus gestalt language processors and its incorporation in ABA
my son watches to cartoons (mostly songs) while i feed him, he remembers the songs pretty well, earlier when he was non verbal i read somewhere that singing songs and rhymes may help him talk, so I started singing songs for most of the times to encourage him to talk. My son has some speech delay but now he can say words and sometimes he sings but those songs will be relevant e.g. "wash you hands, wash you hands" while i wash my hands or his hands or when he see my husband washing his hands. another example is "baby baby don't be afraid, i know you are such a brave boy" is a song from another cartoon channel and i used to sing that when my son was afraid of doing slides or getting into the bath tub. now when he is afraid of doing slide in the park or going up or down stairs he sometimes sings the song. Can it be called scripting?
How would you help a middle-aged adult male to get this behaviour under control? (After doing it for a lifetime) It’s impacting family relationships because it makes normal communication virtually non-existent. Help?
@@marybarbera thank you. The problem is he acts normal during therapy sessions. Masking? I believe it’s called? Perhaps we should try again and make sure the therapist knows he does this.
A close family member who doesn't exhibit echolalia as I understand it, but however repeats certain incidences and phrases from various gaming communities and constantly repeats these items, interacting with family members for about six hours a day. It used to be about 14 hours a day, but it has improved. They are actual interactive 8:52 conversations about the videos and video games and not just repeating the phrases. How would this be defined? Is it echolalia, or something else? And what can we do about it?

My son says airplane a lot, but mostly if he hears it or is playing with it. He wants us to repeat after him too. I’ve noticed that sometimes he users airplane to mean I’m hungry.

I am a young woman with Asperger’s syndrome and I was stricken with echolalia when I was little. It does get better or even disappear. I don’t have it anymore.
Can I ask you what made you want to script? What made you stop scripting? And at what age did you stop? My son seems to use it as a way to avoid others and remain in his own world. It's keeping him back academically so I would like to reduce it.
My son scripts but does it appropriately for the situation. For instance if he is scared he will say from Monsters Inc. "I came by to scare you!" and I know he is scared. He has also done scripting with videos. He will play certain videos that go with what we are doing. Like bath time. He will find Elmo on Sesame Street talking about bath time. I pay careful attention to what he is saying or watching because it has to do with what we are doing! I disagree with this to some extent. Yes I would like correct language but if my son cannot form his own sentence and speak it out BUT can use someone else's sentence to convey a thought I WILL TAKE IT!!!
I used to tell everybody that our life is like a "musical", my son would sing all day his favorite rhymes. I always thought, that because now he sings things that have some relevance to our lives like, when it rains, he starts singing "rain, rain go away" this is good. Apparently, I might have to look into this. Also, nobody discussed knew what this was, and some are trained teacher of autistic kids. I will be explaining this to them now.

I have noticed that my daughter will say things that are scripted but are things she had heard us say before in the same situations…almost like she just thinks that certain phrases are said at the same time during certain situations…for instance, after we go somewhere we will ask the kids “did you have a good time” so my daughter will say that every time we are finished visiting a park or seeing a play or something.

I currently have some problems. Self-repeating. It can be very bothersome. Children can lose focus on learning because of self-repeating positive and negative words and sentences. I will watch the three buttons.
My daughter is 2.5 and randomly sings "happy birthday" or pieces of her 2 other favorite songs throughout the day. Does this sound like she's just having fun or like delayed echolalia?
So my son who turns 2 in a week has been non verbal and seems struggle a lot with receptive language as well, He has been copying certain sounds and words on the show I put on for him. Very simple words and sounds like “Baba and mama and Yee ha” I’m not sure if he’s practicing talking or it’s just echolalia... he says it really low like he’s whispering usually when I’m not in his face telling him to say this or that

I really wish you lived in Wisconsin. My son 5 going to be 6 can label, knows sight words. He scripts sometimes, echolalia is getting better. But nothing is reinforcing for him. He could care less about toys, candy etc. But he’s a huge hand flapping! We have an ACC device. He uses it, but not too much interest. He knows probably 500+ words. It’s putting them into functional speech I’m so puzzled and burnt out on ideas. 😢
Very helpful content being mom of 8 years old mild autistic son. I have question, as my son is also repeating said sentences, immediate echilalia, but when he or I started to sing rhyme, or count math numbers, he sings and counts on his turn and correct order. Like if I will left the sentence, five little monkeys, he will complete it, jumping on the bed. He will.not repeat it. I am confused.
Hello ,my son does the scripting sometimes before sleeping f sometimes while playing ,sometimes when we start study time.. and it is from his fav shows.. also he use the words to make functional sentences..e.g he watched pretend play videos and then reenact the whole thing with his toys not just scripting .. just want to ask how can I reduce it or is it OK?
The main thing is to keep him engaged for as much of the day as possible. Is the behavior affecting his learning? If so, then we want to try to reduce it.
@@marybarbera its effe ting his communication socially like making a conversation gets difficult with scripting..he is very intelligent quick learner so now he is 5 yrs old his focus n learning has gotten alot better he sits down for study time n scripting is not issue at that time

Why does my 5yr old son who is fully conversational and social, makes great eye contact and has a very friendly personality stimm (jump and flap hands when excited especially watching TV) and script when he is bored or, late at night when he wakes up (movies he has seen, conversations he heard....etc)?
Sometimes when our mind is idle, we stim. Most of us do this. When we scroll on our phone or twist our hair or doodle while watching TV. These are all stims. If it is not harming him or anyone , it is likely not harmful.
@@marybarbera it keep him awake at night though and he would do this for up to an hour. He also jumps and would do hand flapping when he is excited and watching TV. I work with kids with autism and he doesn't even have the basic autism signs. I still worry though if I should get him evaluated.
@@LeoandAkunna my sis in law is 8 and autistic and is like this while lacking basic autism signs. Finally know she’s not the only one! Those behaviors are relatively harmless, almost no kids go to bed when they’re told to. However, you should give the child something else to focus on before bed like a book. A schedule: read book, close eyes, and breathe. As for the tv behavior, having them sit and hold something they can play with (fidget) helps. Encourage sitting by making it enticing: blankets, food or snack, lights off. When she scripts, I calmly smile and give different answer each time. If that doesn’t work to lead the ‘convo’ elsewhere, I simply change the subject to distract, I do this by asking something. These are forms of stimulation in times of boredom, it is best to find them something to do in place of it to help them stop doing the behavior. I think it is best to evaluate the child, so you can understand how to help him progress, but that is completely up to you. Evaluation may also lead to him being placed in different classes if that is what you’re concerned about (however, those classes do generally provide therapy for autism). Have a good day.
My son randomly will say words. He is 4. But he can just read all on his own. If you bring him To a cemetery he will walk up to grave stones and say the names correctly. Also I catch him Singing the alphabet perfect when he thinks No one is around.
Ryan Dunkle-I overlooked scripting at an early age in my now 5 y/o daughter. I chalked it up to being the early part of learning to speak (functionally) until she hit 2 and nothing had progressed to ‘functional communication’ without being prompted. How old is your kiddo? My 19 month old says “it’s okay” when she’s upset which is what we tell her to calm her when she upset or she’ll tell us when she wants to eat but then say “ok” which is what we tell her when she wants eat. Is this atypical or normal? She gets all wants and needs met using her own language otherwise. Should I be concerned?

My son does this as well. It seems like all day he is singing, reciting lines from books and RU-vid videos. It can be very frustrating to hear the same song for the 20th time in a day, but I’m glad he is at least talking. He does start mainstream preschool this fall and I am very concerned that it might be a distraction to the rest of the class.. I’m hoping it won’t cause any issues or get him kicked out of class.
Joan Dudley hang in there. My son is also on the spectrum and is now 5. We had him evaluated around 3 just around the time our 3rd baby was born. It could have been earlier like after 18 months but we were pregnant with our 3rd child and moved back home to NYC after trying CA for only 18 months. Now we are settled and it’s lots of therapy and is entering kindergarten. He’s made great improvement but it takes time. Do all the research you can because your helping by understanding it more. We thought of course this bright angel of ours has a memory of gold. She had her autism assessment last week at a level 1/2 border of autism. The pieces of this puzzle make so much sense to me after watching this video. Her echolalia im recently learning about and this video hits home!
As an autistic person, I thought I could share some thoughts -- lots of autistic people (I'd be willing to even say most of us) don't like the idea that autistic traits and behaviours need to be stopped or "trained out" of a child. If you think critically about it, what is the reason to stop their autistic behaviour, as long as it isn't hurting anyone? It usually just boils down to embarrassment, or social problems. But even then, maybe it's not the child who should change to fit in, but the world should learn to accept and be less hostile towards people who are different. Not trying to start a fight, just opening a conversation!

We a therapist coming to the house , she close, with the boy , in his room, she's singing out loud , she read books out loud , trying to show the parents that do not know anything that's she's working??she teach him alll mix, letters numbers or wherever, I suspect that she just take the money from the parents . She's not using any of wat Dr Barbera teaches. I really don't trust her at all. God forbid me😔
