Yup definitely doesn't sexualize the female body either.. by entirely conforming to it and showing your entire body shape..only difference is less skin is openly exposed.. however another comment made a solid point the whole point for the leotards and why men are always sleeveless is entirely about showing off peak physique of the body for men it's primarily upper body strength for women it's lower body strength... Though it's gymnastics not body building..

I remember I was in 6th grade, it was my first year competing, and we weren’t allowed to wear shorts in meets. I was so scared of getting my first code red, and my mom didn’t want me to wear tampons(and neither did I). So when U.S.A. gymnastics said shorts were allowed the next season, oh my gosh you don’t understand the relief I felt.
i actually find this really interesting, i did gymnastics for 15 years before i quit, i was always told off for wearing shorts or leggings during practice so that we wouldn’t get used to it for competitions, quite sad tbh considering we were all minors
I'm still trying to figure out how leos are sexual.. but aside from that, I think the shorts are perfectly fine. I just appreciate being able to see an athlete's muscle structure.. but you can definitely do that with shorts just fine. sometimes it just takes time to modernize things with a long history of tradition, but I'm glad they're catching up though. ps: I'm sure your coaches wanted you to be comfy in practice, but also knew there were rules for competitions that had to be followed. so it makes sense, at least until the rules are changed.
@@jillybeangamingThe reason they're sexual is because you can see everything short of the labia themselves. Contestants have to use hairspray or similar just to keep their cheeks from showing. It's sexual because straight men watch it HOPING for a wardrobe malfunction exposing women's bodies. The odds of that also being much higher than men in their shorts or tights, as well as being a much more severe exposure, since this is their only layer covering them, while men usually have underwear under their shorts or tights.
@@mockingjay478 if men are watching children, hoping for a wardrobe malfunction, then we have bigger problems than leos. I mean, you could say the same about what the fellas wear.. @@Spiritualpanda2 This argument fails completely when you consider A. the male gymnasts get to wear clothes that cover their ass, the upper thigh where pubic hair grows, and sometimes legs, without their safety being considered at risk, and B. this issue can simply be fixed through appropriate choice of color? I mean, then maybe color them brightly and distinguish the legs from the rest at the joint, etc. No one is demanding they wear a unicolor black suit.
@@hannahg.8572 perhaps I think I was fixating on color, good notice. When I saw the full black suit it really just made everything VERY difficult to see and I think any dark color would do the same, but also if the whole body suit was one color(and esp same shade) it would have the same affect. You mention men’s gymnastics, BUT women’s gymnastics is a whole separate sport basically. I just don’t want any issues with safety and as a the viewer/judge it may get a bit difficult to see the best. I’m with you though, cheeky leos are mind boggling to me how that even became a thing which seems sexist as the only option. It’s pure insanity! Your shorts should have always been allowed or something that covers your bottom fully. Seriously how did the whole cheeky Leo come about in the first place? Did they claim its for better range of motion or something?
@@Spiritualpanda2Knowing about all the abuse that happend in gymnastics im not suprised leo's were a thing. I used to do gymnastics and compete. I was extremely uncomfortable in those clothes, which was one of the big reasons i stopped.
I completely agree with you. As a student of gymnastics in the mid 90s and the 2000s. I found it very uncomfortable, and I was incredibly self-conscious to be wearing a revealing outfit from the age of 11 right up until 16. Also, I was constantly worried about my menstrual flow when performing in front of people.
Exactly. We women in the audience feel for you. They should wear the full bottoms they used to make for dance class when you wanted to wear your choice of top rather than 1 piece leotards. And have boy shorts as an option. The leotards of today are soooosheer and they ride up the butt--guys watch these vids just to ogle the girls and women. A tampon string could hang out so easily. And the waxing required for pre-teens and young teens is obscene. But as a minimum, they need to use a thicker fabric and fuller cut. And the boy shorts could be worn over the leotard for practice and when modesty is desired.
@cyninbend not to mention how heavily sexualised these sports and anything artistic like ballet, contemporary dance (if including such outfits) or even beach sports(!), swimsuits too are... if they gave women the choice on the outfit instead and/or made it so everyone regardless of sex or gender had a choice in that perhaps some people would feel more comfortable performing. Even some ballet studios, for example, will give you the choice of attending classes with shorts on top of leotards in the bottom half (and in performances, there are tutus of course, depending on what it is) and honestly save for perhaps some performances here where you have to jump over obstacles (e.g. vault) I honestly don't see why they're so excessively sheer in material or tight, other than for the sake of sexualising women's bodies. There's a difference between confidence and sexualisation and I feel like with the outfits it's explicitly for the sake of some unmentioned fanswrvice, especially because there will be creeps as old as these performers' grandparents or relatives.
I argued my mother down when I was seven regarding gymnastics. The leotards made me body conscious, and I HATED them. Even during class and training, our instructors told us they restricted movement, and we had to leave our buttcheeks out. We were made to wear them during dance and ballet as well, but I wore shorts over my leotards anyway. They sent home several letters to my parents regarding my disobedience.
Can we also talk about how bra straps or underwear being seen until a leotard is an instant point deduction?! You give me a tiny suit that falls exactly on my underwear lines and then ask me to stretch and flip around which can cause my suit to move around possibly showing my unders and that's a problem? This was something I never understood and made me mad as a gymnast
You've got me flashing back to that scene in that movie where she pulls out her bra strap but I'm old and can't remember the name of it 😖 I freaking love that movie, my brain has failed me 🤦 I'm SO glad this conversation is finally happening!
Beach handball has this problem too. The norwegian team recieved a penalty in 2021 for wearing shorts instead of bikinis. A lot of womens sports are sexualised, and people are claiming "tradition" to keep weird rules in place. The dresscodes should be the same for men and women.
Apparently for OLYMPIC beach volleyball they can wear shorts and a singlet if they want and many choose the bikini, but many other competitions force bikinis while the men wear shorts and a singlet. Like the only sport where men have to wear equally as revealing gear is swimming
If you’ve ever had this conversation with high school volleyball “enjoyers” you know how creepy it gets. It’s really disgusting, and girls who voice concerns get shamed and insulted and aren’t even allowed to join the sport unless they’re willing to wear training wheel thongs in front of giant crowds of people.
As someone who did 6 years of gymnastics and now figure skates: the dress codes are bullshit! They actually make it harder for us to do tricks and skills and are super weird and uncomfy...
Every time I watch those 2 sports (and others in the leotard realm) I just wonder how much time the women lose to grooming and grooming-recovery that would be better spent practicing, doing PT, sleeping, etc.. It’d be nice if they just had more downtime too, but juxtaposed against the time male gymnasts (et al.) get to perfect their sport, it’s such a waste.
I'm a figure skater and I have never competed, but if I ever get to that situation I will wear leggins or shorts😅😅 I can't imagine performing in underwear, I couldn't concentrate on the elements properly if I had to worry about my outfit...
@katsuuuuuu8254 This misogynistic society actually tells women they can't wear spandex shorts or the like underneath our leotards! Can u believe it!!!!! 🤔
Same in track and field and volleyball. I ran track and wee Speedo and a short tank. Marion Jones Olympian track athlete was asked why she didn't wear speedos like the other women athletes. That it makes them run "faster". Her response was epic... "then why don't the men wear them".
Thousands of muslim athletes compete in these competitions and wear decent clothing without problems or being forced to change, even in the Olympics.........
Like, there's of course some thought that needs to be spared of how and why it is the way it is right now, but if that reason is just fucking stupid... Well, then throw the thing out the window
As someone enjoys traditions. I agree, it a major red flag. Most traditions have actual reasons behinds it, tell the actual reasons, don't just say "iT's TrADItiOn" and expect people to respect it.
Exactly! A lot of things used to be "traditional" or "always done like that". Most of them are now illegal or just seen as deplorable acts. Don't do things just because it's the way they've always done it.
Ehh i agree and disagree as long as it’s not wiped out same red flags with those who want bans or changes that a majority don’t agree to or isn’t a problem
As a person who swam competitively and had swimsuits almost every day, there’s a lot of drawbacks that aren’t obvious if you’re not wearing them yourself in sports. For example, you have to shave every 2-3 days, and the fabric from the suit glides against the skin in a very sensitive area when you’re doing sports, so everyday you’re trying to reduce and manage razor burns. And it actually distracts you while you’re competing. I’m not saying leotards and swimsuits are exactly the same, but I bet there’s a lot of commonality.
Water polo is worse. I think something like a skin tight wetsuit would be safer because girls will stick their hands inside your suit to grab and pull you down. The suits are so tight (exactly to prevent this) that they ride up to your waist making it easier to reach. It's brutal in there. Plus I have seen pervert edits of competitions on youtube while looking to study skills.
That & now the styles are all getting skimpier every year! Now the backs of these suits go almost up the crack like thongs or semi-thongs. Especially diving teams, but some lap racers too
I'm also a former competitive swimmer. So I'll ask you the same question I asked my swim coach as a child: why is it more advantageous athleticly for women to cover different parts of their bodies than the man?
Every gymnast starts out as a child. Imagine being 12 and worrying about your bikini wax because a bunch of people are gonna be staring at your almost naked body.
Right?! When I was that age, I felt uncomfortable even wearing shorts. I know for a fact that having to expose part of my butt cheeks (or an area newly growing hair) would have been a deal-breaker for participating in a sport. Bodies change so much as tweens and teens. Why make it harder on them?
@Screech911 I will say for dance there is a reason. The teachers need to be able to see that you are doing everything properly. You could really hurt yourself if you're not. Doesn't change how weird it feels though. Edit: This is not a hill I'm willing to die on. I agree with the alternatives y'all are giving. I was a very self conscious kid who hated the tights. “Tradition” is the answer given by people not smart enough to articulate the real reason. You can find the real reason by asking a related question: Why are men’s uniforms almost always sleeveless, while women’s often have sleeves? And if you correctly answer that one, you’ll correctly answer the leotard question. I’ll spare you the brain hemorrhage generated by thinking beyond surface level thought. It’s because part of gymnastics is about glorifying the human form. As the male athlete archetype is one of rippling shoulder muscles, cut biceps and tremendous upper body strength, their uniforms will usually be sleeveless to expose their arms and shoulders. As the female athlete archetype is one muscled thighs, cut calf muscles, and tremendous lower body strength and balance, their uniforms will usually be legless to expose their legs. So, it’s not simply “tradition,” it’s the reason behind the tradition: glorifying the form of the superior human athlete.

It's the same argument that a lot of male GYNs use. They say "If we leave, you'll lose money! Any industry without men will struggle financially!" They don't realize... Even if all the men were gone, a bunch of women would just take their places. Nothing of value would be lost. Sure, the industry might lose a little bit of money, but it's really not that big of a deal. At most, we'd probably lose like, what, $1.50 off our paycheck? We'd still be making $35/h. We could and would survive without y'all, like we have for the many centuries before y'all even bothered educating yourselves on how women's bodies work.
@@bellebonebag8096 Women also enforce rules on women. If you have some idea that there is some kind of universal sisterhood that would have each others back I would ask you if you have ever seen a group of women interact, like at all? They will all hug and make claims of sisterhood or friendship, not an hour goes by and the plots are already hatching. These guys are way worse to each other than men are. Sure guys physically fight more often but grudges are rarely carried long and it is not unusual for a couple guys that were beating the snot out of each other being best buds the next day. That never happens with women. Women like to hold that shit in an plot revenge. Maybe if women brawled more often it would be different. Nothing like a fight to burn off some aggression and there is nothing like the pain received in a fight to remind you the wisdom of giving peace a chance.
as a girl i would always see gymnasts and be like, “that has to be so uncomfortable, if i was in their position i would feel super vulnerable” so i’m glad they have more options now
I never competed, so maybe that makes my opinion less valid or something... but I always wore my leo to class and usually had a pair of shorts I wore with them. When we did our big show at the end of the year, no shorts. And it was a bit awkward, but really wasn't that bad. (Especially with tough skin keeping things in place around the booty lol) I dunno, I guess it's the same as wearing a one piece swimsuit to the beach to me XD Leo's were super comfy to work out in, didn't have to worry about fabric flying around, or getting lose ect.
@@Fragile_Memoriesleos can be cute and comfy! which was probably why people had less of a problem or less of drive to fix it. but having pushback means you have a choice wether to wear it or not. so hopefully any little girl or boy can choose to wear shorts or. a true leotard and have no consequences for their preference and they are all confident ♥️
@@hueningpie I honestly didn't realize people considered them "sexualizing" until I saw this video. @@Fragile_Memories exactly! like the shorts can be matching so that it's not 'in the way of the judge's. they are very cute and honesty unitards can be as well if they are styled well. if someone wants shorts as a preference for confidence and the reply is 'well it's distracting or hard for the judges to pay attention to details so you HAVE to wear this' it starts getting weird. It should definitely be a choice. Ive never experienced being forced to not wear shorts but I wasn't really too competitive so 😭
@@hueningpie I never competed either but my coach put on a big show for us in May. That was the only time we didn't wear shorts and it never really bothered me to much. Or going with a traditional Leo either. Lol

Yes and during the flips oh my god I have a trauma: I was doing flips and yk thank god I was wearing underwear. 😅 My underwear was showing so bad. Iykyk
I stopped doing gymnastics because my coach told me I HAD to wear a leotard and to get over it. I wish I stayed with it but I'm proud I stood my ground and walked out.
sand volleyball actually has options already! i looked into it earlier this year. many still wear the bikini as it can be less restricting, doesn’t get in the way, etc.
Honestly the full body suits look a lot more appealing and slick and and comparing it to a leotard is similar to comparing a suit to business casual I’m surprised they weren’t an option sooner
I am not at all surprised. Women have been fighting to have the right to choose functional and comfortable clothing since all of human history. If things were equivalent, men would have been wearing skimpy speedo style bottoms, that sat up the butt crack to better “show off the muscles and lines” (and dicks) to the judges and audience.
@@___LC___ I’ve never followed gymnastics I don’t really watch sports unless it’s two people in a ring beating the shit out of eachother hahaha and women in ufc and boxing have plenty of short and top options if you want more baggy or tight wear men and women . But I heard of these uniform issues on the womens side of sports for a long while since I was a kid and within the last decade I’ve seen them give more options just never knew gymnastics was so far behind I thought it would’ve been one of the first due to it being women dominated .
I’m so glad that the rules are less strict. Leotards tend to ride up a lot and I hate having my butt hanging out but you get deducted for fixing it while competing. And then I would have to decide between not shaving and being embarrassed when doing straddles and splits or shaving and having the most uncomfortable, itchy razor rash for three days.
This has kept me from starting any kind of gymnastics or dancing (ballet for example) when i was around 11 and had the chance to and tbh it still does.
lol I’m all for men in leos. Maybe they’ll have to glue it to their um 🍆 like women do to prevent slippage. Also they should have to shave like women do. Men with Brazilians BWUAHAHA BUT…. BUT *While I don’t think that leos are inherently sexist, however being FORCED to wear them as the only option is, especially all the high hip cut/cheeky leos in gymnastics. You don’t see much of that in ballet. Most are low cut on the hips. I DISAGREE full suits should NOT be allowed, it’s harder to see all movements/form esp when you WANT TO HAVE ALL SKILLS/TWISTS SEEN & GRADED APPROPRIATELY(unless your goal is fudging scores!) and I’m sure harder for spotters to make fast corrections(a leg could become an arm in an instant leading to falls, paralysis and possibly DEATH) esp when you’re doing hardcore moves that require great speed &power such as w/simone biles being in her own class alone. I do NOT want her getting hurt because no one can see what she’s doing as the full suit would just all blend together. Also grading on technicality, but shorts should be allowed! Seeing the legs allows for better grading. There’s a reason why tights tend to be nude color in dance/ballet so lines can be seen. Same for gymnastics. Now do I think full suits should be given as an option for say women’s volleyball or swimming? Yep! Again the issue is both choice and being fair in grading/safety.*
As a female figure skater I did find it odd that they always made us wear sleevless dresses, where the skirt only goes to the bottom of our bums. It feels very short and uncomfortable. We lift our legs alot in positions and jump which causes the skirt to flip up alot. Luckily you can now buy sleeved dresses or leotards that cover your legs or even dresses with a longer skirt length 💕
The really long skirts always give me anxiety when I see skaters wearing them in competition. It seems like they could get caught in the blades. Pants, leggings or bodysuits with ankle length legs make more sense imo than long skirts.
I think a long skirt could cause some issues like for example a skate getting caught on the skirt for example and also people being perverts but I think long pants would be a better/safer option than longer skirts
Not sure how it is shitty but whatever. The way don't guys wear them is simple nutsacks be afloppin' when you work hard and get sweaty. You want spontaneous nut sack appearances in the floor routine? Get guys wearing that stuff. Considering what some people are trying to put into women's sports we may have actual reason for nutsack coverage in women's gymnastics.

I'm just curious by your definition. If there's a tradition that's only for women what would that be called?)
Those bodysuits only became an option in the 90s. Irina Slutskaya was the first woman to compete in one. I remember the commentators being supportive. Somehow it failed to ruin the sport
My father taught gymnastics, so we did it as children. If you don’t wear tights you can get floorburns or stick to the equipment. Also with all the bending over and splits, it is very hard to do your best when the leotard alone is riding up or slowly becoming a thong. As an adult, I was shocked at what they were making the girls wear. You shouldn’t have to get a bikini wax when you’re twelve.
Sounds like it's the ruling body of the sport that's deciding. If the Germans were allowed to wear full body suits the Olympic Committee clearly didn't object. They only would if there's performance advantage. It shouldn't have taken this long.
In V-Ball we prevented floor burn with knee pads. I know knee pads will be cumbersome for a gymnast. No one is talking about leotards, but about the bodysuit. Women in gymnastics can wear the same stretch pants as men, that would prevent floor burns. Wearing the bodysuit shows off the body more, gives, clearer lines on females. Having said that, they can still choose to dress as the men. The men wear shorts or stretch pants over their body suits.

I’m so grateful for this. I have a couple friends who are gymnasts still to this day- but even when we were little, I remember this one time specifically I went to a friends competition to support her (we were in junior high) and 3 boys sat close to me and her older sister. I heard everything they said about how sexy the girls were and how they’d love to hook up with this one or get with that one. I was scarred and disgusted. Could you imagine the amount of old men that probably go to these competitions just to do the same?
When men get older they still think the same thing but they stop saying it out loud. We can't really control it. This is also why 'covering up' is a part of Islam.

As someone who used to watch volleyball I was always so confused as to why the men wore much longer shorts and women wore very short, tight fitting shorts. It serves no extra purpose to the women athletes, it only attracts perverts and obviously more clicks for the wrong reasons.
I would agree but there is actually not a restriction on womens volley ball apperence wise. They can wear normal shorts or even pants if they want. They choose to wear the shorts
Perverts? You mean natural instinct to check out the opposite sex? Also there’s no point in arguing about this. We all know damn well some women will find it degrading while other women love the attention they get from it. Just let the world keep on spinning
Pervert is a strong word. A man is not a pervert just because he looks at a woman he finds attractive. It's perfectly normal and natural to be attracted to someone. Imagine me calling you a pervert because you were looking at guys you thought were hot. It would be ridiculous.
I quit gymnastics at 11 years old because my coach wouldn’t let me wear shorts to a competition. I quit gymnastics because I couldn't do the moves comfortably in a body suit. I was tired of pulling the body suit down from the crack of my butt. Wearing a bodysuit when doing those moves is disgustingly ignorant.
Lmao no dummy. It’s less restrictive on movement and is more breathable. Women do more lower body heavy routines, while men do upper body stuff, hence why men’s uniforms are sleeveless
Its also important because some cultures are more modest in clothing and to make the sport trully inclusive we have to create a clothing version that every woman from every culture can compete in
As a German female gymnast, I'm so proud this is finally being taken more seriously. Why did we have to invent butt glue before just changing the norms?
@@Grace-ms7un It sort of looks like a clear roll-on deodorant, only you put it on your butt cheeks and then press your leotard over it. It's kinda practical, sure, but I'd much rather just wear some shorts. Especially because you usually have to glue the leotard down again before every event.

Actually it’s a recent development. In the 1920s they wore a special sort of skirt for modesty because it was the 1920s. A little later they moved on to short shorts because skirts are not exactly very easy to perform gymnastics in. Then some weirdos who clearly only wanted to look at women’s bodies complained about women always being sexualised and why do we have to wear these shorts that are uncomfortable and get in the way, and the world went, yeah ok I guess leotards are fine. I loved that an American celebrity (forgot who) actually paid for the uniform fees they got for wearing pants. The Olympics need to modernize their standards because athletes like gymnasts and volleyball players have little to no coverage and the amount of running and jumping they have to do should automatically allow them to cover up if they choose to.
Not in sports but I had to dress in the track and field uniforms for a marketing video. The boys shorts went to just above the knee whereas the girls was sheer and barely covered the whole butt. Note that this is High School. I was told off by classmates for refusing to wear the girls shorts and instead pushing for the boys. Never hated being a woman more than in that moment.

@@erinm9445 that's not gross, that's the objective reality if someone weighs 300lbs, they're objectively not presentable in a leotard. I do think that the first point you mentioned is entirely valid though, reasonably weighted girls shouldn't be shamed for it.
@@NapOfNaps You have an odd definition of objective. There's nothing objective about the idea that an overweight person is unpresentable, that is your subjective opinion.
Traditions are NEVER a good argument. Never. Edit: I'd like to add that I'm not against traditions. I just think that they are never argument for not changing a situation, because things have to change.
I am very confused, we want to be able to show the most possible skin as women in defense of "it's my body" but here you can and now it's a protest? If you were forced it would be a different conversation, but it wasn't forced was it?
@@Similo What we want is to not be forced to either option. And to not make a big deal out of our bodies. They are normal and deserve to be viewed as such. If someone is comfy in their leotard, more power to them. If someone isn't and wants shorts or leggings, that also should be an option. Restricting women's options is simply wrong, no matter the context.
@@Similo Leo is forced well, thankfully now things are changing. Also it's a choice whether one wants to show skin or not u can't police people's choices
Awesome content! So refreshing. I love that the German team pushed back. Young girls shouldn’t be forced to wear a tiny bikini bottom in front of so many people. Makes me think of the beach volleyball controversy where the women who play are fighting against the teeny uniform.
One of my teammates had a super clean routine, and it was her last chance to qualify for states, and she got 0.5 off for her bra strap showing!!! She didn’t qualify because of that. She was 0.3 off. If there weren’t leotards that never would have happened.
