Do you struggle to keep your body parallel to the water surface or find yourself desperately kicking simply to stay afloat? Or are you - as Mark's coach used to joke - sweeping the pool floor? Well if the answer is yes, then it sounds like the dreaded sinking legs.
So, how do you keep your backside and heels nice and close to the surface of the water? Well, you just throw a pull buoy between your legs, don't you? Mmmm, no, not quite, so today Mark will run through the reasons why your legs sink and explain how you can fix it.

The one way to avoid this, but a wetsuit with super buoyant legs and refuse to do pool swimming. But then it's cold over winter so probably best avoid outdoor swimming Actually, why not just stick to cycling and running altogether? Fair easier!

An old coach taught me to try to make myself feel like I was "swimming downhill" by concentrating on my head/shoulder/chest position in the water (without actually going under water of course). All sorts of drills to proof the feeling front, and rotated like you describe here. Once I got the feeling of what she was describing my legs popped right up.

Thanks for the tips. Nicely put.I started swimming since I was 11 and not a regular swimmer but I felt I was swimming pretty well till recently when I told my son to take a video of me swimming and I realised that it was atrocious. I was swimming almost like an inverted 'L' and could hardly reach the 50M mark with my legs scraping the pool floor at the shallow end. I feel your video will be of great help to keep my leg afloat and conserve energy. 👍

What really helped me back then was working on my breathing cycle and actively keeping my core tight and contracted and at some point it just became normal and my legs would float properly.
@adriansitumeang585
@adriansitumeang585 2 года назад
Which part of 'core' do you mean? Im struggling with my breathe cycle (i tend to hold it) and confused as to why my feet kept on sinking even after i try to hold my core (abs and but) and feet tight

How do keep your core tight? Is it done by crunching in the abdominal muscles?

if your feet point to the bottom of the pool you will sink, so keep your feet pointing back and of course don't lift your head too high.

I finally went to a swim coach to help me with my stroke for tri and he showed me where my head position was a culprit in my legs sinking. I always looked forward so now I’m working on looking straight down and moving my eyes forward instead.

Struggling with this. Everyone talking about "head position" just refers to where the eyes are looking; down towards the bottom of the pool or forwards so that the head is tilted up. But it is also possible to push the chin forwards ("down" towards the bottom of the pool) or pull it back ("up"), without tilting the head, that will also change the position of the head in the water relative to the rest of the body. Am I correct? I never hear anyone talking about that
@nancyprier416
@nancyprier416 Год назад
Imagine holding a tennis ball under your chin. that is the correct head position. Your goal is to minimize drag of your body, so staying as horizontal decreases drag.

What about the legs buoyancy natural differences? My legs seem much heavier than others, for the same volume, hence sinking much faster, I need to increase kicking and tiring to compensate, whatever head position, arm catch, body core stiffness, leg position, speed of exhalation, ... What about the different buoyancy tests for checking this physiological fact is real? How wide is the range of this leg density between people? How running and cycling will modify this? Aren't great swimmers some people with proportionally greater chest than legs?

I like swimming more than 1500m (Usually 2-3 km) and I know I have a problem with sinking legs. When I use a Pull Buoy I am flat on the water but can't breathe properly as my head is a bit lower than normal. Obviously, my core is weak, so I will work on that and let you know how I get on. Thanks for these videos, they really do help.

Thank you for that video. If looking to the side of the swimming pool, one eye above and one eye below water surface, does it mean we inhale through the nose only?

Head position makes all the difference for me. I have to be looking straight down or my legs sink. I'm a beginner to open water. Is there any way to stop your legs sinking as you spot? Or is this an inevitable part of open water swimming? My wetsuit helps but my legs would sink without it. It happens when I practice spotting in the pool.
@nancyprier416
@nancyprier416 Год назад
spotting should be fairly quick so just kick a little extra during the spotting. I'm a 2 beat kicker but when I lift my head, I have to really up the kicking for that brief period. I played water polo and during that time my kicking was much more significant since most of the swimming is head-up!

Your catching is kind of sinking before you start pulling maybe bending the elbo to grab the water because you are poking the invisible barrel and not using your arms to anchor around and pull it maybe shoulder strength can help keep the shoulders up or wok on holding the arm up in the glides and then pull. Just my thoughts 👍
@PhiyackYuh

Would you like to give it a demonstration for us so i can learn it also? Many thanks!
@sotc_captivated7484
@sotc_captivated7484 3 года назад
@@PhiyackYuh I can’t personally because I have no access to a pool but this is Andrew seliskar and he pretty much does the glide I’m talking about and then pulls over his catch. it might be hard to see but if you look closely at his gliding arm it will stay straight until he starts the pull wich keeps his hips and body position above and balanced and gives his stroke a great glide. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t54jQP-zEJQ.html
