Age of Empires 4 released on Gamepass for PC, Steam and Microsoft Store in 28 October 2021 and has received largely positive reviews since launch, ranking around a 7 or 8 out of 10 in most AOE4 reviews. My review here: • Age of Empires 4 Revie...
Yet Age of Empires 4 has also been met with some critical reception and controversy for not being innovative, accessible, or impactful enough. In this Age of Empires IV gameplay review I reflect on the public launch of Age of Empires 4 (following some previous experience with closed beta test versions and public stress tests).
I'll use various data sets like age of empires steam player counts, aggregate review scores any my own more qualitative data from comments on my unusually popular Age of Empires IV review youtube video and some more detailed poll discussions here on my channel page.

For my own thoughts, which are less of a focus in this video, please watch the last section or read here for my comments from my written review:
"The full release of age of empires 4 today gives real time strategy, city building, conquest and broader fort/ empire builders something to be excited about - we haven't had considerable new content for a very long time, and even with extra dlc and expansions for Age of Empires 2 and 3, including the anthology and their definitive editions, we haven't truly had a new age of empires game in a while.
Age 4 delivers some lack luster, yet 4K, graphics and reasonable AI and unit pathing (although still quite flawed) to the franchise. It launches with 8 playable factions, a multiplayer mode, sandbox mode, and over 40 missions within the historical campaigns. AoE4 mods and map makers will have to wait - the game isn't launching with that support, even through Steam.
Overall is Age of Empires 4 worth it? Is AoE4 fun? And why buy age 4 when the definitive edition of AoE4 has already come out? In this video review I will answer those questions and provide some feedback and overall verdicts on age of empires 4. I hope that Age of Empires IV will have the staying power previous iterations had, but with a high launch price it seems the barrier to entry is fairly high. Thankfully, the addition of age of empires 4 to the xbox gamepass for pc helps make it, at least temporarily, an easier sell for most".

I really like that the game incentives "city building" more by having some adjacency bonuses. I really like that. Also... seriously Im no purist but who the hell calls the Holy Roman Empire as ROMANS.

The problem is cause it wasn't called the Holly Roman Empire but its name was the Holly Roman Empire of the German nation but most people in the west don't know that.

Funny fact is that holy roman empire was founded when there was still a roman empire. Pope crowned the HRE emperor like he was the founder of new roman empire. But there was byzantine empire a true successor of roman empire in medieval times.

Also non siege units cant even target stone walls making them feel more useful

Stationing soldiers on the walls is rather useless since a) no construction, should it be a wall tower or a keep gives you any superior sight over the area and siege weapons b) when the enemy approaches in the fog of war with as few as two siege weapons he takes apart your wall within seconds, only to storm shortly after with foot troops your helpless bowman on the wall. They should raise by a lot at least the sight distance if not fighting capabilities of constructs. Otherwise they are just a bulky non essential obstacle. Also seen falling keeps after an attack of just 30- horse riders.

Yes that is a great mechanic. I think in time it will make walls more viable. It also helps offset the loss of the high ground bonus. The only high ground now is on the stone walls.

@@claymathews8814 WILL, Atleast until Phil Spencer is incharge at Xbox. It's a Xbox published title they have all the rights, it has no contractual reason to ever leave the platform, though I would love it if they made DLCs all available for free on GamePass...

Biggest reason for me not getting AoE4 is rather simple, lack of innovation. I wanted it to start from the stone age and with a advance upgradesystem. I would like a system where you lock yourself with a specific era for extra bonuses (risk/reward). Something like that would make me want to play AoE again, i did try AoE4 on gamepass but uninstalled after a couple of games since for me it feels more or less like AoE2.

A small suggestion that you have a small buffer at the start of your videos, it often seems like you are mid sentence when the video starts. Other than that keep it up pixel!

Without AOE2, would you even play a game like AOE4 that is so far behind every other RTS in the last 5 years in every category? Without that nostalgia, would this even be a game? You can hate Godfather 2 & 3 without hating Godfather 1. And I think AOE 3 & 4 have about that same relationship. Wouldnt be able to stand on their own, are slightly better in just a few ways from their original, but have really failed overall to many people.

@@DrummerJacob I haven't seen any evidence in the game or out that indicates it's far behind other modern RTS games, so I can't answer your question as stated. There are pro SC2 players loving and streaming this game. There are some complaints about missing QoL features, but they don't detract from the quality of the game in truly meaningful way for me. I will of course be happy when they're added in a future patch. As far as having fun goes, this RTS stands on its own for me. I am enjoying their more asymmetrical take on these empires more than their AOE2 counterparts. I respect your right to dislike the game, of course. Not trying to change your mind, here.

I am coming from AOE2 and my first impression was positive followed by "Where the fuck is the units" "Where the fuck is the civs" "Where the fuck is the map" AOE2 has 7 expansions and 20+ years of patches AOE4 has more content than base AOE2 but it is difficult transitioning from playing a game with 20 years of expansions to the base game.

@@michaeldunn8972 Not sure how responsive the devs are to feedback and critisism. I come from Total war and Blizzard world where the devs are the opposite. For me a person who doesn't really know what makes AOE2 perfect, I guess it won't be easy to see the flaws some people might point out.

AoE 2 sort of did this through animated book pages. I like this documentary style even better because I am a massive fan of history. One of the reasons I play this game.

I have never played Age of Empires or any game like this before until this released. My friend recommended me trying it cause he has always been a huge fan and well, I can honestly say I am addicted to this game now. Been playing non-stop every chance I got trying to learn and get better. Finally beat a Medium Bot, next objective is a Hard Bot then I will try to aim for actual Players

Oh the RTS franchise died out but it was so popular! age of empires and starcraft / red alert series. I still play starcraft 1 fast money map. You should try these games as well.

I don't think people hate it? Has a 84% average on steam from fans and 82% average from critics.. that is hardly hating it. For me its one of 2021's best games, wonderfully crafted gameplay and audio wise and the best in the series since AOE2.

I don't hate it, but it's a massive dissapointment. 20 years later AOE 2 gets a sequel, and its missing a lot of features, the graphics aren't very good and look dated, THERE ARE NO UNIT STANCES LIKE WTF. This game would have been great if it wasn't priced at $60... Game should have been around $20 and I don't think anyone would be complaining. I'm just enjoying it on xbox game pass

People want Age2 with new graphics. I am one of the people who really loved Age 3. It felt different and unique and really fun to play. Age 4 for me so far is a great time. I don't think any of the current fan base is ever going to be satisfied with anything other than Age 2 Ultra Plus Turbo HD.

Problems: 1.) Campaign a.) Too short. b.) Unfinished, seeing how there are empires that do not have a campaign. 2.) No perks, which was a thing in AOE 3, that I liked. Also made people play each faction in order to unlock them. 3.) Computer A.I. a.) Very stupid. b.) No personalities. c.) Turtles a lot. d.) Only enemy A.I. attacks. 4.) Maps are too small. Need to be bigger. 5.) Skirmishes a.) Colors for enemies to allies that will tell you who you are attacking and defending. Has recently caused me problems when trying to defeat one enemy of 4. Especially when I am the only one attacking and making sure my army does not get destroyed by all 4 enemy A.I. armies. b.) Ping options for A.I. to strike, defend or whatever does not work. c.) Allied A.I. does not fight along with you are at random, just turtles in their bases. d.) No commands for defensive patrol or anything like that for units. e.) No increase to population cap. f.) No restrictions on Ages, meaning you can not restrict to a certain Age of progression. 6.) No map editor system, yet. It is also an unfinished game. The corporation promised to finish it and add dlcs to it. It lacks stuff from AOE 2 and definitely from AOE 3. It seems to be a regression, instead of an improvement. It is not worth the $60.00 USD I paid for it.

The AOE 4 civs are really the most diverse AOE civs have ever been. in AOE2 the civs were practically identical with very minor tweaks. In this game all the civs have unique mechanics and features.

I agree with that, but the issues are the same as any publisher pushed game: it’s not finished. It’s broken in so many ways. Balance, bugs, missing features. They pushed it out without fixing anything suggested in the public test intended for gathering feedback, and now they rushed out the winter patch that generated as many bugs as they tried to fix. All of this for the low low price of $80 CAD… It’s a mess. It might be good in a couple years.

Divers isnt always good. Divers means more balancing acts and also: A Spearmen is a Spearmen, a men at arms is a Men at arms and you got them in every culture. The only thing which could be done 'better' in AoE2 would be to reskin the 'regular units' into their historic units. AoE2 goes with a culture system (like middle-european, eastern european, western european) and so on. But the general things are avaiable to everyone and you have spikes in some areas. Thats what AoE2 makes it good.

I like it. I might love it if they can improve the AI, but...AOE3 still feels extremely innovative compared to this. The home city, the treasure resources, the trade routes.., the colonial card deck...they really add a lot of depth and fun. Still, 4 is excellent.

The flavour of this game is so immersive that its hard for me to ever play Aoe2 again, since I play mostly coop against AI. The music, the models, the way your city naturally forms some roads, the biomes... I have a blast with it and I feel sad for people that don't

They just didn't choose to do anything grandly innovative with an RTS title that makes me want to pay a AAA price tag for it. But this game is running with little to no bugs. One day perhaps I will try it. Today is not that day.

@@lazerrhino Thank you for that idea but that is an entire other topic of controversy I have about subscriptions. Personally, I would rather own my games. I also work far too much to play too many games That's hard nowadays, but at least Steam gives me a library for all my digital titles. For now, watching others play for free is preferable.

I think for most people the game feels lacking because they bought it on steam, where it’s full price. Paying full price for the content it has really just isn’t worth it in my opinion. As a gamepass product, it’s great, but as a full price game it’s extremely lacklustre at the moment. Once more content is added I expect things will change.

To me, the problem is that this game is still stuck in 1999 when the sub-genre it’s in (though dead until recently) actually made several innovations/improvements since AoE2. AoE4 almost feels like a stripped down remake of AoE2. It doesn’t really add anything major that AoE2 didn’t have, and AoE2 had so many more features. Meanwhile, since AoE2, we had Big Huge Games’ Rise of Nations come out that took the AoE formula but expanded it so you could develop all the way to through the modern era. And it was amazing. Then you had Ensemble’s own Age of Mythology, which took the AoE formula, but applied it ancient world fantasy, and it was awesome too. So for them to come out with the next big game in this sub-genre after almost 20 years, and have it be just a stripped down version of AoE2, feels a bit thin.

We're likely to see the more innovative stuff come with future content. Going with a solid base game is likely what they wanted. It's not entirely an AoE2 'remake' like a lot of people are saying. That'd be like saying COD blops 2 is a remake of COD blops 1.

I really dont like how much criticism the graphics are getting. Yeah, theyre not “next gen” but most people dont have high-end gaming PCs. Its more important for the game to run well on regular peoples computers

I am having fun with it on Game Pass but still can't understand why they could not have improved path-finding more. Also, my armies often do strange things that I don't want them to do. I did expect more innovation but glad it plays on my older laptop.

You mentioned some people criticizing that there are only 8 civilizations, and I agree with that sentiment. I'd be OK if they added more civilizations even if they are similar in gameplay to the others. Just having the option of playing as a different culture for a different feel would satisfy me. Like come on, how is there no Byzantine Empire??

I think people should like at what the game is and not compare it too much to aoe 2. Ofcourse content wise it could have been more I agree on that, but aoe2 has had a lot of content expansions/dlc's throughout it's 20-ish years it exists. The last good rts game i've played is company of heroes 2 which released so long ago. Imo, I'm glad that finally after a long time a new rts game has released that has stellar gameplay and is not a remake or whatsoever. The civilizations feel different enough. Graphics wise it could have been better, but I'd rather have solid gameplay over graphics any day.

I also adore COH2 but AOE4 imo really has its charm. I m also a huge fan of AOE2, from the very first game from the 90's. People are just being people and salty about the little things. New and different changed things are always unwelcome at first, just like AOE2DE and even AOE2HD. People will get over it eventually; it's basically like a child having a tantrum when they get a toy they didn't want as a christmas present, now just instead as an adult when a new product comes into the market.

Just my personal idea, I hope there is a game mode set in a super huge "world map" where you can build your empire from scratch. Slower pace, but focused on city building, diplomacy, exploration, and trade/economy, and then towards the end - you start to engage in warfare.. Something you can play for couple of days or weeks, instead of the usual 1 hour skirmish.

@@shiggins_gaming haven't played Civ before. Do they have actual, and detailed combat now? Lack of combat (I prefer RTS or TW type combat) is the reason I haven't been convinced to play Civ games yet. My idea is still having the RTS overview and management, but on a big map. Not far view "world map" where representing characters walk over places, and stuff are managed via panels. So a game mode thay is longer paced than a regular RTS, but not as long as Civ/TW gameplay. Just an extended RTS experience that you can play just couple of days per session.

The big difference is games like Civilization and Humankind are turn-based. Otherwise, I do agree with the soooooooo comment above - Civ or Humankind could deliver for you on everything you first mentioned. As for your second comment where you mentioned detailed combat - Humankind probably has a better system, but again it's turn based (however unlike civ, Humankind draws a specific boundary and lets you fight multiple 'rounds' within an in-game turn).

But for now I am satisfied with different TW games for a turn-based game, with all those other systems mentioned - since they have incredible combat mode. So just wanting now an RTS extended experience. Quick skirmishes is getting old now for me. I remember Rise of Nations having feature of markets, then with traders and trade routes that you set connecting your settlements. I remember them working well for an RTS. Simple things such as these would work for AoE.

Yeah, there are maybe too much positivity in this launch despite glaring stuff. I guess it is because no major RTS was released and RTS fans were very thirsty for a top tier one. If it was a different time, this game would be teared apart. Graphics are a bit underwhelming, changes like projectiles never missing, hotkey, lack of better zoom, no proper ranking system, no obs and replay chat, no map editor, and all for that high price. Overall people are trying to be more positive. The release seems mostly without big hiccups. They fixed some complaints like the annoying bell. Hopefully the devs are faster than what normally any dev under MS has been. AoE2 DE still misses some features the community has been begging for so long. Despite the negatives, some changes have been very positive IMO like changes in Dark Ages. Still $60 for a steam games is really a hard ask. I think $40 it would be a home run. $50 would be reasonable. For $60 they need to be on the money and fast with the extra missing content. For now people are having a honeymoon phase. If they don't update the game within a month or two, people will start to really complain.

Nah, we're pretty sure that future content will make it one of the best RTS games in 2020s. Like Civ 6, HOI4 and EU4, they game will be better with future expansions and DLCs. They delivered the base game with all the standard stuff. Modding will come soon. All other stuff will come soon. The hate is just people who wanted more. Atleast, they got one of the most important feature released, a multiplayer mode that has no issues.

"It WILL be better with DLC or Expansion Packs" I mean Northgard went from being "a petite indie title" when it had first 3 clans in Public Alpha release in 2016, to being "WHOOOOAA it's on mobile and switch too?" What I've taken away from the let's plays videos are the AI seems completely brain dead, weird homing arrows, janky formation movement, lack of collision detection (where possible), units appear to have no substantive presence, a click fest, etc. In short seems like a game out of the past trying its damnedest to avoid innovation.

I play aoe4 alot but you are completely right other series like total war have improved on rts by miles. The backlash from aoe3 probably scared the devs too much and that is a shame right now it's a good nostalgia trip I got on gamepass I'll completely dump after a week. Total War I can come back to time and time again and it's less frustrating to play.

The correct way to short the HRE is just to call it "The Empire" At that time (middle ages), "Romans" would be more accurate to encompass the whole population, but in practice the term was not preferred and they were named after the region within the empire they were from. (Saxonian, Bohemian, Silesian, etc). The very word "Imperial" was enough to refer to them in diplomatic matters. This is because, only one _Empire_ could exist in the world, it was a religious institution in that regard (the clarifying term was not to understand that outside of it, could there be unholy or common empires, no. Only the HRE could be one. The "eastern roman empire" was called Byzantium, that's it. There was not "Otoman Empire", that was a Sultanate. They would never have called Japan, Aztlan or Mali, "empires". That was out of the question). Less frequently, even "Sacred" could be replacing "Imperial" as reference. The term "empire" was beginning to be used to label other great political entities in the late 1700's and early 1800's. This is because of the increasing defection of religious point of views on part of historians. We in the spanish speaking world call the HRE, officially the "Sacred Roman-Germanic Empire" (translating word by word, mind you) And this is its full name, but almost always we prefer to use the short official version "Sacred Empire". This is because being spanish a latin based language, we use the exact same words as the official in latin scripture SACRVM ROMANVM IMPERIVM ( Germanicum was added in the XV century) These two terms are the correct ones that every history book on the matter has, since pretty much the Middle Ages in Spain.

The more I play it, the more I like it. The campaigns are stunning, fun, and even educational. I understand some of the criticisms that I'm hearing but, overall, I'd recommend picking it up. I'm having a lot of fun playing it and, in the end, that's what matters most.

I mean is it too much to ask for a billion dollar company to release a game in 2021 that looks better than 10 year old games? (Shogun 2 looks better like this). Srsly the animations look so unnatural it's a joke, on top of that the cartoonish style was never what AOE was about, it was mostly realism with some telegraphing elements to it for better readability, but never cartoonish. Gameplay wise, the franchise reached it's pinnacle with AOE2 and AOM, if new releases can't reach that level fine, but at least you need to give the players some reasons to buy it, like utilizing modern technologies. Maybe they tried too hard to make the visuals look appealing to MOBA players, because the relatively small playerbase of the dead RPG genre wouldn't really be enough to make this game a success.

But the cartoonish artwork works much better for Blizzard games for instance because it's fantasy imo. Makes me kind of sad but business wise this might make sense.

And this has the same cell shading graphics... take a looke at civ 6... that is exactly the same graphics like Aoe4... and the fan base also partly/mostly hates it :D :D tbh in civ 6 I love this look yeah, but then they would have made a game for the AOE2 fanbase ONLY... and by that they wouldnt attract new players AND also kill AOE2 DE!!! (if 4 is the same game with just a graphics update)

I mean idk, could be, like the vast majority of young players don't even know RTS apart from mobile games, so yeah they might be more inspired to try an RTS PC game that way. RTS games can really be overwhelming for new players in the beginning, lots of multitasking, high APM demand, difficult to master. Maybe if you go for max. readibility it will help for people to not be that intimidated.

Wut? Do you even watch any game play? Biggest shit talker here easy. Each faction has the same unit more or less but they look wholly different, mongol, dehli and rus all have different garb for their MAA, spearman etc. The only two factions that look similar are the english, french and the HRE and given their distances from one another it makes *more* sense that they look similar and even then they have slight differences amongst all the units to make them more unique. I think your thinking of aoe2 where all the units *do* look the same and its one of the reasons I quit it after picking it up again.

I don't hate it. There are few and far between any good RTS games these days. I was never into the AoE series, I prefered Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. I think AOEIV is a good addition to that genre and without the nostalgia trip of the previous games in the series. It's a proper RTS unlike the TW games where half the game is turned based. Half the fun with a RTS is to wreck someone's economy in real time. It feels a lot more intense and that is what many people like about these kind of games. Honestly, I'd take AOEIV any day over any new TW game.

It's just the small things adding up that really bothered me. For example all the castles are the same regardless of the CIV. Most of the other buildings are unique why not the castles?! Also I do think it should have shipped with more civs.

I got it for special regional price. Happy with paying $24. Noticeable problems are friends seeing different colours of teammates during a game. Can't filter regions on custom games. No wiki, just general knowledge for each civ. 8 civs considering the potential different playstyles from different landmarks I think is enough to please a casual. Not to mention playing with a friend and synergyzing different strengths.

The genre just doesn’t work well with the gaming market of today.. It’s not “worth” 60 bucks even though I absolutely love it and will continue to play so on gamepass

I miss on AOE4 the lack of artificial intelligent unit behaviour and more realistic combat mechanics, which are still rudimental. I think in 2021 it is possible to achive this inside a game, but the developers didn`t even try this at all. Thus it is a nostalgic game but the lack of progessivness doesn`t make it a showcase game in my opinion.

age of empire 3 is way better then 4, the amount of content alone is much more then aoe 4 is offering considering how old that game is is crazy, multiple civs to play plus leaders associated with each civ, plus a.i. socializing with the players giving a great casual friendly feel if you dont wanna play with other players. theres a huge variety of units to use, like come on, aoe 3 is way better and is not getting its credit.

You know as a casual AOE player this game is honestly nice, my grandmother actually was the one who showed me this game on AOE 2 and its been a game that I have steadily comeback to throughout my childhood and teens and now adulthood. I am planning to visit my grandmother soon and tell her the new game is out ( I doubt she knows but wouldnt be surprised if she did) and I feel like this game would be right up her alley most likely will let her use my account to try it out who knows maybe ill be 1v1 grandma soon on AOE

Sorry to necro this vid, but I think one of the biggest things problems you didn't address, is Nostalgia. How many of us remember booting up AoE2 and learning how to march and defeating the English for the 100th time, just because we wanted to play the William Wallace campaign again? How many times did we protect the Maid of Orleans and fight our way through the English and Burgundians to deliver her to the Dauphin? I think that besides modding, and custom games which are massive components to the Age formula, the Campaign is really where we should look to understand the problems. When I went to play the French campaign, I felt no connection to it. Where was Joan, where was our savior? Where was the William Wallace Campaign? I think the people making the game dont fundamentally understand/remember/know why we still play AoE2. A revamped Celt/Scottish and French Campaign retelling two of the most iconic campaigns of the series would have sucked people right back into their childhoods. I think they did eventually figure it out, and that's why we saw Joan being released for the French in the last expansion. It would be like if in Age of Mythology Retold they removed Prostegma, vulome, and Eez Voli! It is something that people dont know they are looking for, but know for certain that something is off when its gone.

I was pleased that I could try it with the cheap xbox 1 month pass on my hardware as I only have a gtx 970 and wanted to play it on high settings which I thought would be a no go. Lucky it seems to run very well, even with large campaign battles. I was so surprised. My pc is ryzen 7 3800x, 32gb RAM, x570 mobo, ssd. I am running 1080p

I really like it - it has depth, it has new ideas, improved ones. What I'd love to see though is a patch that brings Ultimate 4K textures - the game could look so much better for folks with a high-end machine, that's a bit of a pitty. They also need to work on the animations - when cavalry crushes into infantry, they should be able to run them over - like in Battle of Middle-Earth. I would also love to see content updates to build strongholds - ballistas and catapults on the wall would be awesome, like in Stronghold.

Number 1 reason: the graphics: i am a huge AOE 2 fan and i was really excited about AOE4 but man the graphics look terrible especially the textures. This game looks cartooney and unrealistic. In my opinion it feels like they don't respect history that much. Number 2: the campaign is not as exciting as i thought it would be there is only 1 voice actor in the whole campaign very important characters remain silent and it's just a step back in General for single player focused players like me. Number 3: not really important for 99% of players but you still can't rotate buildings and i like to build my settlements beautiful xDD

I have a lot of respect for AOE it was the first PC game I truly got into. Played it for hours and hours. However, I found this new game to be very lacking. Although it did press my nostalgia button it was not enough to maintain my interest the way HUMANKIND has. Perhaps in the next 2-5 years when they add stuff. Map editor not being present was a huge killer. I love map building. Although AOE has the formula for success I agree that they could have innovated a bit more. The troops on walls was nice though. Taking a leaf from the stronghold crusader book there. Not worth the price for it though. I do love how they updated the graphics just enough to look good but still keep the feel of the old AOE2

My favorite part is the campaign done documentary style. It's informative and doesn't promote stupid medieval misconceptions or stereotypes that's in every single media. As well, it can be educational to a generation that's highly lacking in historical knowledge. On the other hand, it does kind of suffer a little because it tries to span a broad time period. It lacks a central protagonist throughout the campaign, but I believe that's a worthy sacrifice just for the education. I suppose it could be argued that the civilizations are the protagonist itself in order to achieve those educational purposes which I find just as fascinating.

for me that's the worst part of the game. i would play the game, even if i did not enjoy the gameplay very much, only if it had a cool campaign, but it simply does not, age of empires 3 and age of mythology campaigns had creativity at least

I was hesitant to buy, feels like this was game pass focused. I’d rather buy a complete edition or atleast on sale, I’m in no rush.

I for one will hold off for awhile, the game looks great but the price tag is a bit on the heavy side, considering what we have available. But i'd really like to try it out in the future when more things are implemented. Got my hands full with AoE2 and humankind anyway 😁

I havent played it yet, but from what I can see, the graphics aren't really much better than AoE 2 and I think the classic look of the units on 2 looks better, but I won't say I hate it because I havent tried it, gameplay looks cool enough.

You are right that they backtracked for AoE2 type of mechanics and didn't try to innovate further than graphics. Microsoft will never be able to satisfy everyone. They tried to innovate (do something new) with AoE3 and look how that ended. Some people don't even want to recognise AoE3 as a legit AoE game. I for one loved AoE3 much more than AoE2 and that comes from personal taste.

i played about 4 hrs of it. the UI of the start menu is amazing. but after playing paradox strategy games the game itself i feel like zerging buildings with mass clunked armies is a thing of the past.

The price is an interesting aspect: in South Africa, the game costs R330 which is about $22 US. The production value is astounding and the game is really deep and fun. The music is glorious and adapts so well to the onscreen happenings. Microsoft didn't hold back when creating this. The battles feel more epic and the strategy more meaningful than other iterations. My only concerns are the following - and it might change in the future : 1. Not being able to pick my colour in the lobby 2. Not being able to see the map after a game 3. Just 8 civs But all these things might addressed in the future somehow.

More civilizations will likely be in the pipeline. It is a way for them to make an extra buck. AoE III also had only 8 at start. That is of course shy of the 13 that Age of Empires 2 had at the start but both AoE III and AoE IV have more variation in their civilizations. Now AoE III DE with expiations have 19 civilizations to pick from. (Not including the revolution ones since you do not start off picking those but grown in to those.) So that is more than double. Of course, some might not like the notion of them selling civilization bit by bit via DLCs. But that is the situation we have been in since the first games. Even if they where called expansions back then. ;) I do agree that they should address point 1 and 2. AoE III DE even allow you to recolour the base colours you can pick from. Which I appreciate. The DE versions are great and do not feel at all like not worth the time now that AoE IV have been release. Rather, there are a great complement.

Yup - my R330 has given me 50 hours of game time already and there will be more. Even if I stop here I would have paid R6,60 per hour for quality entertainment - no idea why people think this is expensive

@@The_Beard It is a bit odd since I paid a lot more (Then again I choose the more expensive version to on top of my local currency making it more expensive) and I am happy with what I got. The game do not seem out of the ordinary expensive. I will say that the DE version of AoE III is pushing graphics that is on par on AoE IV in my book and that might make the value proposition of AoE IV look less enticing. But it does not look like a bad looking game.

@@Cythil Yea I guess the value proposition is different for everyone. I do wonder about the regional pricing though. Just so you know an average AAA game is normally around R800 in South Africa on Steam so I don think they are pricing this one in that category in this part of the world for some reason. I do hope they continue to build on the game aside from my happiness with it in its current state, I'm sure they will!

So what do we want the game to be... AoE2 community: "this game is not AoE2" The rest: "this game is too much AoE2" I think the game is extremely fun (more fun than AoE2) and it sets a good basis for release of future content, so seems like the developers crossed this fine line perfectly. I do agree that maybe they should add some free DLC, given the current price. At the same time this is a game that's pretty good and streamlined on release at this price, which is rare these days....

I think what drives AoE 4 success at the moment is most people don´t know how good AoE 2 DE is. They think it is a old game with old graphics usw. so they go for AoE4, which is AoE2 in 3D with many missing features, but still AoE 2.

200 pop is too small. We want to able to choose: Population (more than 200) Colour Random civ The graphics is very blurry (missing textures) And the deluxe edition is utter garbage. Not worth £20...
