Why Do People HATE Razors? Why Do Skaters QUIT The Brand?

Razors Skates was once, one of the most dominant brands in aggressive skating but in the last 10-15 years their reputation has taken a fair few knocks as various elite skaters have fallen out with the brand and aired their issues publicly, via podcasts and other social media.

Recently their reputation has come into question again after Billy O'Neill, owner of Mesmer and ex-Razors rider, claimed Mesmer skates were not being stock in some shop because Andy (Owner of Razors Skates) was threatening to pull his skates if they did. This was then denied by Sunshine Distribution manager (Razors, Reign, GC) Geoff Acers but the post became a catalyst for people to bring up older problems with the brand and their management.
In this video I’m going to cover Razors dominance in the 2000's to all the fall outs and drama around Razors since then - up until more more recent events.
Even just two years ago there was pay dispute with Yandriel Silverio and Razors came under a lot of scrutiny for seemingly not doing enough to help out pro team rider Jeph Howard after he suffered serious injuries during the filming of his Razors Skates promo video.
This has also raised the question how much do Razors Skates do for the culture, especially in comparison to other brands?
From 2001 to 2010 Razors Skates put out some of rollerblading’s best videos Uncloned, Steal this video, Closer, Ego, Icons and Game Theory. They have had some of the most iconic skaters in rollerblading on their team, from the likes of Brian Shima to Brian Aragon, Jon Elliot to Mike Johnson, Jeff Stockwell to Dre Powell and Billy O’Neill plus loads loads more.
They have played a massive part in shaping rollerblading, but not so much recently. People love their skates and they have a loyal following - if the brand were to leave it would have a big impact. Historically when brands leave rollerblading people don’t just typically move onto the next brand, there is always a drop off in numbers, and rollerblading has such a fragile eco system that could have a massive knock on effect - which nobody wants.
What people do want is for Razors skates to do better, to be more responsible for their skaters and add more value to the culture beyond the skates.
We have to consider that there are nuances to all these stories and without actually being there we don’t know what the truth is - so these stories are alleged.

This was balanced, in my opinion. Good work. I didn’t want it to get to this level, and hope things can simmer. To the person who said i was “wrong”, i would have to stand my ground and say the information i received was pretty direct and from a reliable source. Yes, the context of what was said can be interpreted differently, as i was not present for the actual chat, but the conversation was had and it was on those subjects. I took down the story bc Andy called and said if i didn’t take it down then he would sue me for defamation, which later in the conversation he said he would not have done, to his credit. Then i asked him to explain the story and he pretty much said what Geoff said. It ended cordially. Still, in my opinion, talking with another shop owner specifically about our brand, our margins and what would happen if he were to raise his margins is inappropriate as far as I’m concerned. When you have a relationship of making money with a shop over the course of 30 years, to have this conversation about new brands is distasteful and suggestive, in my opinion. That said, i wanna see this cool off. Stick to our shit and keep doing the work. Not out here to ruffle feathers but i felt provoked to say something, so i did. Maybe coulda gone about it differently, and probably so. Moving forward lets just do our best, and ill focus on that.

The Jon Fromm comment was exactly what I was told. You’re not Brian Aragon. Let’s send you to these park competitions and see how you perform.. I did decent placing top 5 numerous times but you didn’t sponsor me for my park skating… it really did take the love out of the sport for me I can’t lie. It’s like telling a baseball player to play golf. He may be decent but it’s not his realm. All in all this video is spot on. It’s really was all about the big names and if they spent more time nurturing the skaters for who they are and the reason they got sponsored in the first place they really could have gone a long way. Sad to see where the sport is today but glad the actual skaters who invest in the industry and put it back in have a good future ahead of them. All that said where’s my shoutout lol😂.. I definitely have some tea!

when i started placing well in german competitions i got into the grindhouse team so i got all the skates i ever wanted for free. then talk came up about a razors germany team and i received a pre sale model of the shima II. i was pretty young and super proud so i didnt ask for more, no shirts, nothing. There was a homepage with the german team including a picture of me and some text. I completely destroyed the skate, loved it, shredded it, represented hard. After some time i asked for spare parts but never received an answer. during a competition in frankfurt my skate was in such bad shape people asked me why i was skating such a fucked up skate. I had to change backslide plate with a friend who royals with the right foot cause there was nothing left of mine... Still no answer from razors. I got pretty sad and decided it was time to order a skate from grindhouse. they sent it over and asked why cause i should be getting skates from razors. anyway andy ended up pretending i was never on the team and they just gave me 1 promo skate to test. funny how i ended up on the team homepage but yeah no thanks razors.

Dre Powell brought me around the Razors house around 2010. Andy and I had a few chats about the state of rollerblading and its future. This was right around the time Chaz was in town for the filming of the Ground Control video. Andy did a lot of complaining about the San Marcos house being a huge burden for him while the whole team was killing themselves. His attitude was basically “fuck the team I have Aragon” then ranting in and on about how he wished the Nyhm team was his. ended up going with the team to Vegas the trip ended up costing me nearly $6000 and I had to sell my MacBook Pro.

I remember seeing a post from Brazilian rider Rafael Gonçalves saying he spent around U$500 because of a trip for a promo vid for his am intro because Razors didn't pay anything to help create that. Bare in mind that U$500 in brazil is like, 5x that (For a quick example, U$500 = 2,720 BRL, minimum monthly wage here is around 1400 BRL) and i guess that was one thing that made him just quit skating because i've never seen him skating again and he was like, top tier skating on par to Eugen in terms of technique and switch ups.

I’m intrigued by their online presence and marketing, they are in shops and obviously have legacy sales but the new generation of skaters has very little branding or advertising to connect with the brand. The other brands do so much and are so much more inspirational, particularly to young people. There’s no doubt Razors makes great skates, I just wonder what that brand will look like in the next 5 to 10 years, for example
@BltchErica
@BltchErica 24 дня назад
Yea, I feel that the only Razors customers are people who used to skate when they were popular. I used to look at Brian Aragon and cool dudes like him at my skatepark all wearing SLs so I felt like that's the skate I needed in order to be cool. And I did love the look of the skate. Since less people skate Razors now and go for brands like Them, kids just can't associate Razors with something they would desire. Razors to me was the iPhone of rollerblading 😂

@lucaspauken

Problem with razors is that they've had the worst attitude, but the most consistent quality. The best thing that's happened to rollerblading is people like Julio and Billy offering a reasonable and industry driven alternatives. market share was powerful before, but it won't be what keeps them around anymore. I love the SL, I love the flat/super flat progenitors. They did a good job with the tech and it was their game to lose. They lost. Look at all the people they had who walked away. Even ogs like Shane that sided with yandy. They've never taken care of anyone including Jeph.
@DankPeezy
@DankPeezy 25 дней назад
What a great take on this situation Tom! I heard of shady business practices from Razors even back in the early 2000's. Not getting riders parts they would need, even for comps and other skaters or shops helping them out. Razors seems like they really need a change in management. Andy should just be quiet and stop creating PR nightmares that have to be cleaned up. Seems like a very unsophisticated guy. We just ALL need to keep supporting the companies that give back like Them, USD, Standard and Mesmer. Now, go Tspin Mistrial 360 rewind off of something homies! 🤙

That was a good balanced video. Loco did an article interviewing Andy a while back and it was interesting to hear from his side but the sheer amount of stories that you hear about doesn’t do him any favours and there must be some truth to them. It’s annoying because they’re a great skate. They’re so reliable, comfortable and perfect for almost any grind. I tried them skates and while they where decent they just fell apart far too often.
@TomMoyse
@TomMoyse 25 дней назад
Yep we definitely have to consider there’s lots of nuances and details to the stories We are just not aware of publicly, but like you say there’s a lot more leaning a certain way. Razors make great Skates and if they’re the only ones that work for you, definitely get them and keep rollerblading. There is plenty of ways to support other brands via wheels frames, etc going comps. I wonder if in the next 5 to 10 years, will the brands that are more about the community and doing more for outside exposure grow bigger and then the industry becomes less reliant on razors skates?
@jordskates
@jordskates 25 дней назад
I find it odd that Razors used the Cult shell for years without buying the rights to it from the manufacturer so it wasn't open source. Or if that wasn't possible they still could have used it better at the entry level end. Look at the rollerskate brand Impala, they used it for a budget skate and smashed it. They even have regular sports shops selling them

Razors was one of the first to start making pros in the southeast of the US back in the 90s and I've known several people that benefited from that. They did so much good at the time. But also all of those people I knew have had a falling out with Andy in particular. I only started learning about it all last year. It's been going on so long and with so many people that I just can't support them anymore. They have some of my favorite gear too. And I'm one of the people that need something at least as wide as an SL or I can't skate. The whole situation sucks. I want Razors to thrive but I want the community to thrive without the business owners making enemies everywhere more.

I had one pair of razors when I was in highschool and wasnt a fan of the skate but mostly had remz but razor always had some awesome products and videos, as a remz fan it frustrates me to hear about how great of a team razor has and how it would be pretty easy for razors to give more pro models even if they are a special color way of a team skate. I agree i think that more companies need to do more to give back and giving back doesnt always have to be money or free stuff but to see an industry that is so small in some aspects but has such potential a razors tour, comp, am comp could bring alot of light back into the company and skating.

I would say they were the most memorable team of the last few decades. If rollerblading was to poster child a team to sell it to the mass it would be that OG one. its a shame too because they had good looking boots for the time. Side note but if they’d invested the money sometime in the past quarter century to make an in-betweener shell size for the Cult and Shift (have an actual 10 shell jn addition to the current 8-9 and 10-11), that’d be amazing. But yes some foolishness and short-sightedness…Sacha Lopez and Savosin, for instance, are unique talents they should’ve promoted, and they should be paying Broom to travel and film/compete wherever he wants to go. Elliott deserves a lot of credit for building up their image and brand…prior to him taking the reins for marketing, they were akin to Trigger/Anarchy, no offense to those brands 😅

Lot’s of theories! Just a few facts! Lack of proof! Like always Tom Moyse beeing the gossip girl of the scene! - If Jeph’s still on Razors he must have his reasons otherwise he would have quit, dont you think? - If some skaters do not receive as much attention as Brian Aragon or Shima or Murda received it’s because Andy believes they’re not as commercial as the legends, and it’s Andy call because it’s his money at stake, or will any skater will give Andy 20.000 to 40.000 usd to buy a minimum of 500 pairs per model? - Billy I never liked you as well! - Ana Julia was my responsibility in Brazil, and her “trainer”, that in fact do not even know how to skate, got her a good sponsor and as far as we know, he gets 30% of her money in the process. Why she’s out of Razors? Because we think he’s useless, especially at the Championships. We never paid him to train Ana only his expenses be for being her driver. Taking Ana out of Razos make him free of us, and now he is traveling internationally and well paid for doing nothing to her! - Regarding mesmer, so sorry if you’re trying to blame someone for not selling as much as Razors! If you could develop a good skate, as Razors has, I do believe you could sell better. - All the other stuff, cry haters, angstyteencrying!

Mate you’ve complete jumped the shark. Read the description. I’ve clearly said there is details and nuances we don’t know about this situations so we have to keep that in mind. But by the way, these are just the stories that are public there are way more stories, even the scooter riders have stories. I also literally said Jeph is still skating for them so we have to consider that. But a few people who aren’t bothered doesn’t hold much weight against a tide of stories saying the opposite - or are the all making it up. Seems like a bit of a tinfoil hat conspiracy that. Numerous people, over a decade all with similar stories. It’s hard to have a productive conversation around this subject when you’ve not even paid attention to what I said. You’d be foolish to believe that any of these skaters felt any kind of way for not being treated the same as Aragon - no one said they did, the point is andy relied on people like Aragon and Shima and now they don’t exist he doesn’t care as much, which is fine he can run his business like that but there’s other brands that do way more for the culture and the future of rollerblading. You talk about Ana Julia, consider telling a 16 year to quit skating, not: maybe skate for someone else, but quit. Coz that’s what he allegedly said to Wake.
@rafaelbintb
@rafaelbintb 23 дня назад
@@TomMoyse I jumped the Shark? I do not believe this at all! As far I am concerned you’re the only one here trying to get likes, promoting your only self by introducing the chaos inside, like you by yourself said, a very small environment!! This small environment is the answer for at least 80% of all vomited complaints, no money, no shining! You’re boring man, use all the attention you have to promote something good! Razors and Andy will not become rich and pay the skaters like the sports stars, or make pro models of non commercial athletes just because you’re saying Razors don’t care about athletes! They do care, but unfortunately they can’t carry all the burden alone! Ask USD athletes if they’re happy with what they receive as well! Please stop being a chaos agent and start becoming a growing agent, our sport needs union not more division! Peace
