What led to QAnon’s success? In this week’s podcast, Jon talks to BBC Newsnight International Editor and Foreign Correspondent Gabriel Gatehouse about how QAnon can attract people desperately looking for reasons to explain their misfortunes, and how the mainstream media often leads to the virality of conspiracies. Like the pee tape. Remember the pee tape? We gotta talk about the pee tape.

It never ceases to amaze me that a comedian is one of the best journalist/analyst out there. It's a complement to Jon but it's a condemnation of the journalism industry.

And religion. Q and Republicans spread lies like you can't say Merry Christmas and that God is being removed from schools. Public schools fall under separation of church and state. They can send their kids to religious schools but it is easier to continue to push a lie. 45 told his followers covid would blow away like the wind by Easter and then again by 4 July in 2020. Meanwhile, he sent over 200 ventilators to Russia and got vaccinated.

When these type of people look at their world and it isn't what they think it should be, it is easier to blame some vague boogeyman for their discontent than to accept the reality that the world is moving on without them and there is nothing they can do about it.

I think the biggest reason people get taken in by stuff like this is because they don't really understand (or care to understand) how things actually work. If you don't know how a car works it becomes pretty easy for grifting mechanics to take advantage of that ignorance by telling you that so and so is the reason your car is doing that thing. It can be extremely frustrating hearing about people who believe this stuff but I think we should reserve our anger for the people who are preying on these people and taking advantage of their (sometimes willful) ignorance.

The difficulty with this is that there is no hard dividing line between the victims of misinformation and the perpetrators of misinformation. Each innocent victim who's only sin is the ignorance to be tricked by someone else lying to them becomes a spreader of that lie to the next innocent victim of their own ignorance. You can't really split the conspiracy nutters into con artists and con victims because every one of them is both.

QAnon was an ARG, not a LARP. LARPs are live action games with specific rules. ARGs are "alternative reality games," which emulate real events. They have fictional stories, but the players act as if it were really happening while usually solving a series of elaborate puzzles. 4chan is a good place for these, because people there already role play, and there is a deliberate blending of jokes and serious commentary. Partly it's for entertainment, and partly it's to allow people to retreat to the "just a joke" position. As a result, you are forced to assume that nobody is ever being completely serious. The construction of QAnon was a collaborative effort. Whoever "Q" was, most of the details of the conspiracy were generated by the interpretations posters gave to the "drops." That is part of why the theory has such an arbitrary and disconnected nature to it. That's also part of why it has so many incredibly bigoted and repugnant elements, since they were taken directly from the half-joking-half-serious casual racism and sexism of 4chan's /b/ board. After QAnon became a problem, 4chan started banning all threads about it. That's why they moved to 8chan, an unmoderated board that has hosted various topics banned from 4chan, starting with GamerGate, but also including a lot of child pornography at times. It's ironic that a board that hosted gigabytes of child abuse photos eventually became the center of a movement supposedly to end child trafficking.

Bit of a tangent, but I agree that education can help solve issues, but I also believe that it isnt just teachers and schools that must help with that education. The whole community has to help, including having leadership that isnt acting like children. I graduated HS in 2011. The number one thing that was pushed in every class was critical thinking. But some of the kids didnt do so well in school, so they didnt learn that. The people around me who I've seen not do well in school weren't meeting the hierarchy of needs. And now we have education wrapped up in government, politics, and economy. I think all of our country doesnt believe the government is working for them, so they invest in a side that they think will help them. But we dont have a government willing to govern, they sont seem concerned about educating their populace about the issues at hand

Lol Q and flat earth and sjw movement are all proof of the fact that western governments (largely American), learned to fear a well educated middle class, especially the youth of that population. This was a result of the movements and actions of the youth in the 60's&70's. In response to the threat of citizens that could disrupt or topple corrupt government and enterprise, public education systems from k to post secondary have been hollowed out and devoid of any value. Instead transformed in to a for profit day care system. The result is what we have now. People don't know how to think.

Not to mention even if they are educated and knowledgeable those who do have a degree, can still mess up and potentially be stupid as hell. Literally, I trust Jon Stewart, he has always been honest knowledgeable and well-intentioned, I don't trust Wolf Blitzer or other buffoons of cable, because I don't trust anyone above him, because they are in fact part of the elite media. The whole Q-anon stuff might be and insane and fake, but there has to be an element of truth, to even be believable. For example, no one believed in the pizzagate nonsense, however look what came out after: Epstein.
@grildcheez1504
@grildcheez1504 2 года назад
But since then Gislaine is facing trial, Epstein was arrested and mysteriously offed in a high security prison on a quiet Saturday morning, we still don't have a list of all these rich powerful people on private islands who obviously need to be part of any child trafficing that happened that they were complicit John's in. Are we still calling this a conspiracy OR is this an attempt to discredit the truth, marginalize the association, dismiss the facts and sweep it under the rug despite the actual body of evidence that plaid out in the pizza gate accusation? Was there really no fire after the smoke?

I was never told that "America is the best in the world." Never. I do think what you say applies to a "significant portion of the US," but it is far from everyone and everywhere. When a popular & honest candidate came up (Bernie) he wasn't crushed by the people, but by the corporate interests of the DNC & of main stream media. Had he won we would now have the beginnings of medicare4all, student debt would be cancelled, a $15 minimum wage would the law, a Green New Deal would have been launched employing thousands, and on and on. Q as a genre began back in the early days of Encyclopedia Dramatica/4Chan. The humor was some dark but believable sarcasm at first, but new people would show up & say "is this serious?", then the joke caught on to not break character since it was funnier to F with noobs. The 'serious sarcasm' took off as a genre, the stories got surreal but they showed with just enough fake verification (fake scientists, doctors, links to research that never happened, etc), they could fool some of the people all the time. This genre gave birth to 'Q' & was meant as total, sarcastic, dark comedy until they found people gullible enough to believe that don trump is a christian (though he told Howard Stern back in '14 that he's atheist) & Hillary Clinton is guilty of anything they can dangle in front of her. Magas are so riled up & intent on hating, trump's social media team can say ANYTHING & magas will hate in whatever direction you aim them. They need to be ruled so badly. There's a great BBC podcast series "The Coming Storm" which covers this topic really well. They even visit a QAnon rally, and I think they're pretty fair about it. The people are deranged, but also there's a reason for the mistrust and discontent that leads to belief in anything.

It also has to do with being part of those in the “know” - part of a group that has special knowledge no one else knows. It makes people who don’t have much going on in their lives feel special. And then they found others with their same line of thinking, and confirmed they are part of something special

and it works extra well for stupid people, because it lets them know something the intellectual "elite" do not (or it blames them directly for enabling)

Yep.... they're "special" alright... a kind of _intellectually challenged_ "special." Sadly CoViD hasn't made much of a dent in their numbers.

Short answer: It gives them a sense of purpose and belonging in a society where a person can be in a room full of other people and still feel alone and isolated. It also gives them something to do, like a hobby or DnD or gaming with strangers online.

Jon I just heard about a book on another channel. It’s title is “Of Boys and Men” by Richard Reeves. It traces the lack of progress many men and boys in America experience. Especially it traces lack of college degrees. There were two other books I read “The Boy Crisis” by Warren Farrell PHD and “The Once and Future Worker “ by Oren Hass. They all go into the things you are talking about.

I'm completely taken by the sunlight lighting up Jon's crown chakra. Gives him a saintly facade.
