Depends on where you live. I'm her example this observer would be close to the equator look out perpendicular to the earths axis.

Yes it does work exactly as she explained.. Im in the northern hemisphere. The winter circle (orion, gemini, taurus, auriga, canis) is only visible during the winter. Andromeda for example, is only visible during the spring and summer. If all youre doing is looking at the big dipper, it's normal you wont see any other changes.

They just flip the video image in post processing. Pretty common technique for these types of videos, but it does make it look like she's the world's best backward scribe. (Notice her shirt pocket is on the right side of her chest, typically you would see it on the left).

OK, it makes total sense, now, isn't our whole solar system moving across the galaxy as well? That theory would only work if we're stationary in the exact same sport every year. So if we're moving across the galaxy, why do we continue to see Orion, big deeper, etc .

The brainy guys assume it takes 220 million for one rotation of sun around the galaxy and we humans were formed only 200,000 years ago. It's not much difference, is it? If we do a calculation for our entire existence the sun hasn't even moved 0.1% of its journey💀💀💀. It's less than that. That explains why the constellations haven't changed significantly for 1000s of years!!

As the dude above me said, it takes so many years for any significant change in space it's rather unfathomable, also many of the stars you see in the night sky are also moving with earth. Most of the stars you see in the night sky are part of the same milky way galaxy, all rotating around the same point, which means it would take even longer to see any significant change (even dinosaurs would have still seen the same stars as we do now)

The reason the Big Dipper and Polaris is always visible is because they are close to the north celestial pole and thus actually more “above” the earth than off to the side. So you will always see those no matter what side of the sun you are.

This was very good but I wish it had been one minute longer. She needed to explain the gradual change. 1:20 Notice that when Pegasus is high in the sky at midnight in the Spring (top image) you can see Orion and Lyra on the horizons at the same time. So we see the same stars throughout much of the year, but in different parts of the sky depending on the seasons.

Why is the northern star always there. If I fly to different parts of the planet I can see it and it is there all year round. Orion's belt is always there.

Guys she was JUST pointing out the "changing" starts or better said the ones we are not able to see on some seasons. What you see in her video is a 2D Top down view of earth orbiting Sol. So she is NOT talking about the circumpolar starts. Those are the ones u can always see at the night sky, assuming u don´t have a lot of light waste around (big citys). Obviously those Stars are again different form the viewers position, like Northern Hemisphere (London) or Southern-hemisphere (Cap Town). If u break a school globe in 2 pieces around the equator u got 2 hemispheres). All that works course the axial tilt of the Earth is between 22.1° and 24.5°. So if you have a school globe at home place him on a table and walk with a flash light (SOL) around the globe, may some one turns it while u doing it but anyway, imagine there are little dudes on the globe, you will notice, no matter your position( Sol), that peoples of the north or south part should always be able to see the most part of you´r ceiling or you´r table. But not the bookshelf behind ya all the time or the window or your girlfriend making fun at ya..... so i hope everyone is now able to understand how it works and that she was not talking about the circumpolar starts. Oh and for the smartarses...yes i know that the earth orbit inclination is not 0.0° and the distance is changing also. Therefore it has also an influence on viewable starts on the sky but this is just an easy explanation....

For the people who were wondering. If you're in the north you can see the northern stars year round because they are above the earth. If you're in the south you can see the southern stars year round because the're underneath the earth.

+AnadunePictures The North Star? Well, actually it's not. You can't see it at all South of the equator. The North star is in the northern circumpolar sky, which means it is always visible in the Northern Hemisphere. If you're at the North Pole, it's directly (more or less) overhead. If you're at the equator, it appears on the horizon. This is to say it is "above" us instead of off to the "side", so our orbit around the sun does not affect its position in any noticeable way.

I want to know why the constellations remain fixed and never change relative positions even though we are moving in an orbit of 365 approx days, times whatever number of years through the universe. and yet these stars are in the same position as they were when first recorded by early astronomers

+AnadunePictures It's not moving with us as we orbit the sun but remember that it's straight north from the planet.. the stars talked about in the video are more towards the sides of the planet... ( equator ) Take a ball and a lightsource... And have a point on the ceiling.. now spin the ball around the lightsource and you will see that basically you can always look at the point on ceiling without it being blocked by the lightsource... The stars we can't see are the ones that are behind the sun... Most of the stars that are right above us ( or in the south right below us ) we can always see

she's stupid man....you can't only see straight up in the sky if you are at dawn meaning the line between day and night you can see at 180° so you can technically see at let's say the left of the sun so you can also see the orion even tho you're planet's dark side faces pegasus in her example

What seems to work to explain this phenomenon... we revolve around a stable axel, facing the polestar... this star is always in the same position, even at daytime constellations rise and set on the sky... we only see a percentage of the stars at one given glance... If the sun would not be there, in 24 hours we would see all there is to see from our altitude on the planet, every day...366 times in a year of 365 days...

Please explain why I can see the Southern Cross tonight, but in 6months time, when earth is on the other side of the sun, and I'm facing 180° , the Southern Cross IS STILL SOUTH !

I came here to find an answer to; If the earth is rotating, why are the stars stationary? But I got another question from the video; I assume the lady is left handed, but does she write from right to left to that it is readable from the opposite side? Forgive my ignorance but please answer if you have an answer to either or the two questions.

I would like to know if the positions of the stars, planets and constellations like their coordinates remain the same relative to earth throughout the years? for example, the position of the sirius star would be same with respect to earth at 12:00 PM on 03/02/2024 compared to what it was on 03/02/1988 at 12:00 PM??

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you will see those constellations near the northern celestial pole year round. They will not be in the same orientation year round though. Imagine you are in the middle of a room on a chair that spins. Tilt your head slightly upward and spin in that chair. The walls you can see will be changing as you rotate, but there will be parts of the ceiling you can see the entire time because you are sort of tilted in that direction. The same concept applies here. The stars toward the south will change throughout the year in the northern hemisphere just like the walls in the room, but the stars near the northern celestial pole (near the North Star) can be seen year round - like parts of the ceiling.

@@Refulgent_Rascal yes, but your use of "constantly" can be misleading. The stars you see each night change slightly on a nightly basis, but over the course of 365 nights, they make a full revolution.

As we know planets of solar have different speeds, e.g the closest planet to the sun is faster in making an orbit around the sun !! Now the question is why every year we see the same big bear on the same spots (maybe little change)? Does it mean our sun and all other stars swim the same speed in our Milky Way? As I already mentioned, the closer we are to the center faster we are to compare with ones further (right).. the maneuver is here, from old star books we can know that they have observed the same patterns, so almost no changes hun?!? I'll expect an answer. Thanks

I didn´t nderstand completely: Some people say that we see different constelations due to the day is not exactly 24hs, but 23:56, so, each day, constelations come 4 minutes early. Well, what happened if the earth complete a rotation in exactly 24hs and not 23:56, would we see different skies ? How ?

Dihelson Mendonca : yes, the stars would still change even if the solar day matched the sidereal day (which it cannot, but that's a different discussion). Day on earth is always the side facing the sun, night is the side facing away (ignoring twilight). What ever stars are overhead tonight, in six months we will be on the opposite side of the orbit, and the night side still faces away from the sun, so "overhead" will be 180° away from where it is tonight, and there will be different stars in view.

But we don't. We may see the same stars but where we see them changes. For example in Spring the star we see high overhead at midnight might be very near the horizon at midnight 3 months before or 3 months after. If you watch the stars closely, over a year, noting *where* in the sky you see them, you will see that the pattern changes month by month, on a 1 year cycle. Please see if there is a local chapter of the Amateur Astronomers Association in your area. You might find it very interesting.

You just talk about the equator sides views north and south poles is imposible to see the same constellation all year round to be more specific we can not see Polaris at the North Pole the all year or sigma octantis at the South Pole the all year the planet is not in one same spot traveling or rotating around the sun in a year . How can we even see the same stars in the first fuckin place if we supposedly following a sun thats moving we should never see the same stars ever again every night the only way this is possible is if the earth never moves, just wobbles back and forth hence the reasons season change and we supposedly see different stars which isnt even true in itself

The stars are far away, so any movement would not be all that noticeable. The stars we can see are also in very similar orbits around the Milky Way as our sun, so are moving right along with us. The stars DO move though. Each one has a property known as "proper motion" which is a measure of the apparent motion of stars relative to us and each other due to the motion the solar system through space.

bs. we see the same stars in the sky all year around. the southern cross can be seen in Australia 12 months of the year. they move a few degrees each night but they are always the same stars from winter through to summer

The Southern Cross is composed of circumpolar stars so it is visible throughout the year, just as the Pole Star is always visible in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of the tilt of the Earth, the constellations you can see throughout the year change, except for the circumpolar ones.

The stars are in in our Sun solar system, or in Milky Way galaxy, or in other galaxies? I think that the stars that we see are in our Sun solar system from the video explanation? We shouldn't see the same stars every year, if the stars are in the Milky Way galaxy or other galaxies, because the sun is orbiting the Milky Way galaxy every 200 million years not orbiting around the Sun every year like earth, and all galaxies are also flying through space in the Universe.

that's because her explanation is for people that live at the equator. the people at the pole for example would always look "up" perpendicular to the glass she drew on, so their star signs would stay the same no matter where the earth is realtive to the sun (if we ignore the slight tilt between earths rotational axis around itself and the one for the rotation around the sun). if you live somewhere between the poles and the equator, it will have a mixed effect.

you probably don't live at the equator, right?? there they change completely, because of the reason she explained. at the poles they don't change at all, because if they look "up" it would be perpendicular to the glass she drew on, so it would have no effect. if you live somehwere between a pole or the eqautor, it will have a mixed effect. i'm pretty sure you live somewhere between, like most people do. some stars that come up above the horizon during summer won't in winter, and the other way around as well. the stars that are on top are mostly unaffected.
