As someone who comes from a smaller city in the north of The Netherlands, I didn't enjoy living in Amsterdam much. It felt like lowering the quality of my life in many ways. It felt way more stressed, more crowded, more polluted, more congested, less friendly, and the amount of space I got for my money was way smaller. And that was even before the rents skyrocketed. Besides that, I felt more unsafe, many of my neighbors didn't really speak Dutch, and I hated the smell of drugs everywhere. Many people in Amsterdam also have an arrogant, self-centered attitude. They behave like they "own the world" and look down on people from other parts of the country. I know, not everyone is like that, but many are. Even though I enjoy visiting Amsterdam from time to time, and I know that there are a lot of positive things about the city, such as beautiful architecture, more cool places to see, I just felt like it wasn't a place for me to live. I never enjoyed it much and was always happy to take the train back to the north each weekend to recharge my battery. However, I do understand that there are people that have different perspectives and enjoy living there. Good for them! I know that many Amsterdammers come here to unwind and many are surprised by how beautiful, quiet, clean, and friendly the north is.

As a foreigner, who was supposed to live in Amsterdam, but ended up in the east of the country, your comment is very interesting because I don’t think I would ever want to live in Amsterdam anymore now that I have visited a lot of the country, even though I still enjoy going to Amsterdam a few times a year. My goal is to go live closer to the sea because that’s what I like even though the region here is nice, I don’t really like living so “far away” in the land. Where do you come from in the north? Groningen? (I went there for a weekend last year, also two other places in the area, and I loved it☺️)

@@maevajesse There are so many nice smaller cities that give a more authentic Dutch feeling. You don't always need to travel far from Amsterdam to experience that. Think about Haarlem, Utrecht, Alkmaar, Leiden, Amersfoort, Zwolle, etc. Yes, Amsterdam has a lot to offer, but so do other cities. Smaller cities often have a higher broad prosperity (brede welvaart in Dutch), meaning that the quality of life is better there if you look at all aspects combined: cost, social issues, greenery, jobs, economy, etc. Amsterdam scores better on economy and jobs probably, but it scores much lower on almost all other aspects. And if you really need to go to a concert of a world star in Amsterdam, you just go there for a day, book a hotel or drive back home the same night. Most of the things Amsterdam offers, can be found in other cities too. I currently live near Leeuwarden, but am considering moving to Groningen city. I hope you like it in our country!

Why live in a ghetto, if you can live in a safe place in the east of the country and drive you bike without being insulted or threatened , without having to pay extra for everything, without being discriminated for speaking your own beautiful dialect, and without having to try to understand Amsterdam slang language, without drugs, whores, drunk tourists etc..

Every time I leave amsterdam: * There are 2~3 decent restaurant to choose from, they close at 8pm * Supermarkets are 20min walk away instead of 5min * There are 1, if any, decent tennis club I can go to * Villages are dead after work. There's no night life, I'm bored to death. * There are no groups/communities of interests. Only generic buren feestjes. * I travel out of the country a lot, for work and weekend getaways. Taxi from Amsterdam to schipol is 15min. * No interesting cocktail bars, comedy clubs, shows/events, etc outside of the city. And I can go on and on. Some people aren't cut to live in the city. It's okay to enjoy the countryside.

I don't think it's the city itself that non-020's disliked. It was the perceived arrogance of the inhabitants, who acted as if it was the center of the world, and so did all the media. But it wasn't. On the contrary. Especially in the 1970's and 80's it was - not unlike NYC - a heroin-injected anarchic hellhole ruin. Today however, this is no longer the case. The gentrification did it's work and "real" Amsterdammers now live in places like Purmerend, Lelystad and Almere.

As a Dutch citizen who lives in the relatively small city of Nijmegen I don't have any issues with Amsterdam. I have lived in various locations in Amsterdam for over a decade. Amsterdam is anything but the metropolis most Dutch seem to attribute it. Having lived and worked in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Frankfurt am Main and Tokyo the notion of calling a "typical large city" is ludicrous to me.There is no reason for us Dutch to have a lack of context either, most of us have seen large metropolitan cities either due to immigration, work or vacation. I think the phenomenon a lot people experience is that of Dutch "azijn pissers" in the RU-vid comment sections. They are the somewhat related Dutch adjacent of the "Karen".

The Netherlands is MUCH MORE then Amsterdam. In my opinion Amsterdam is a tourist trap. Everything is so expensive and crowded. If you like crowded places then Amsterdam is something for you. If you like calm, quite and nature just visit some small maybe unknown places. Just take a map of the Netherlands and throw a dart and maybe you end up with a nice and unfamiliar village to visit wich is beautiful instead of a crowded city with a ton of photos and videos on the amazing internet.

Amsterdam is often perceived as arrogant, with an attitude of "we are everything, and the rest is nothing." This perception stems from the way some Amsterdammers speak condescendingly about other parts of the Netherlands, leading to a sense of alienation. This arrogance contributes to the idea that Amsterdam has become "un-Dutch," disconnected from the rest of the country. The city sometimes appears to distinguish itself as a separate entity, ignoring or minimizing the values and traditions of other regions. These feelings are exacerbated by the way Amsterdam positions itself as the center of everything: culturally, economically, and politically. This creates a divide between the capital and the rest of the country, where people often feel undervalued or even ignored. The emphasis placed on internationalization and modern, cosmopolitan values in Amsterdam further contributes to the notion that the city is becoming less Dutch. The effects of gentrification and the influx of expats reinforce this image, as traditional neighborhoods are overtaken by trendy cafes and luxury apartments, alienating the local population. All of this contributes to a deep-rooted irritation and sometimes even resentment among Dutch people outside the capital, who see Amsterdam as a city that follows its own path, often at the expense of the rest of the country. Another common complaint about Amsterdam is the open drug use. The smell of cannabis that lingers in many parts of the city can be unpleasant for some and contribute to a sense of insecurity. This is particularly true for those who are not accustomed to the openness with which drugs are consumed and tolerated in Amsterdam. And there is a feeling that Amsterdam receives a disproportionate amount of attention and resources from the government, to the detriment of other regions in the Netherlands. This can lead to frustration and the sense that other parts of the country are being neglected in comparison to the capital.

I'm actually kinda proud of Amsterdam for being so appealing, and I can see how unique the city is. Since I don't live there, I don't mind about the foreigners and the prices and whatever. It's the Amsterdammers that are the problem, not the foreigners. Amsterdammers are to the Netherlands as Americans are to the world. Also, the media is all focused on Amsterdam. If something happens in Amsterdam, it's news. And when the same thing happens somewhere else, it's - at best - a marginal sideline in the news from the province. If Ajax wins, it's important and has to be discussed. If Ajax loses, it's important and has to be discussed. If an Ajax player has farted, it's important and has to be discussed.

How they consider/treat as if cities like Groningen, Maastricht, or Emmen are 'far away, in Siberia' . As americans you problably get how ridiculous that is . A journalist seriously asked Brazilian Ajax player David Neres ," if he knew about Emmen" , like how far away it would be . The 2 hr trip to Emmen is probably peanuts compared to traversing just his hometown Sao Paulo !
@markuserikssen

The distance from Amsterdam to Groningen, Maastricht or Emmen is way longer for someone from Amsterdam, than the other way around. Many people from other parts of the country commute to Amsterdam for work, studies, etc. One of my former colleagues in Amsterdam once told me "I once visited the Afsluitdijk!", as if she made a trip around the world, how special that was... 😅

@@wimschiphorst8541 Windbag arrogance . The Max mania Formula 1 is happening right now at circuit Zandvoort. That circuit was completely outdated for F1. The F1 could easilyhave been held at the 'Cathedral of Moto GP' TT circuit Assen (with minor adaptations ). For the windbags and F1 snobs the Assen circuit was no good. 'too far away' in a 'farmers province'. Not good reachable for 100k visitors (100k F1 fans take more space than 100k MotoGP fans aparently🤔). So (for the good of Scrooge Prince Bernard) , Zandvoort had to be rebuilt for a sweet €70 mln. ! And because Zandvoort is situated in a Dune landscape along the sea with one 2 lane road to the village , alle the 100k visitors have to come by bicycle or train. And for 3 days the National Railways NS have to run a adapted schedule for the entire country to get the crowd in Zandvoort ( In Assen access would be not a problem). OMFG. The windbags. Same with rowing lake the Bosbaan in Amsterdam. In the 1990s there was a qualified rowing lake near Groningen , suitable for a Worldchampionship, which the world federation thought was fine. But not for the Amsterdam dominated Dutch rowing scene ! Too far away, in farmer country. So it took 25 years, a lot of lawsuits against cutting down trees and € 80 mln to widen the Bosbaan before the Dutch federation applied for a world championship in 2014.... For an event that could have been organized in 1994. This is only sport, but the same arrogance decision making can be applied to economic decisions that have more impact. See the earthquake scandal in Groningen. All the Gas revenues went everywhere , but not to the province where the gas was extracted and now suffers gas extraction caused earthquakes ruining houses.. Similar exploitation examples can be given for Limburg, Gelderland, Overijssel , Zeeland ..

Actually it looks great. But if people from Rotterdam say they hate Amsterdam it could be a reaction to the years after 1940-1945 when it was very popular in NL to say that Rotterdam was ugly and Amsterdam a magical center. This felt really bad because 14 may 1940 the city of Rotterdam got bombed by the Nazi's and how cruel it is to call the place cold, empty and ugly after the war? So now 84 years later and Rotterdam rebuilt we are reluctant to praise Amsterdam. Rotterdam before the war was very lively and internationally oriëntated. For instance Tuschinski who built the likewise named theatre was based in Rotterdam and he built quite a few cinema's in Rotterdam that were destroyed.

Rotterdam may have been bombed , but the city council decided themselves to tear all the remains down, so the city became unrecognizable . Quite simple: its the arrogance. The Netherlands is one of the most densly populated countries. But still, the people insist that Amsterdam is the only place that matters. This is crazy (and also factually incorrect, but who cares). Cities like The Hague and Rotterdam and Utrecht are absolutely worth visiting, but also exceptionally nice to live in.

People dont like Amsterdam, because there are more foreigners than real nativs living there, and also to much English spoken in shops, supermarkets by the staff, instead of the Dutch language. And expats make no effort to learn Dutch. If you are for a few months, that's ok. but if you are here for years, that is terrible. That's downright cruw to the Dutch people. We are living in the Netherlands, and the language is Dutch.

There are so many videos on RU-vid by tourists visiting Amsterdam. They mainly show their OOTD, go to Madamme Tusauds, Magna Plaza, Heineken experience, red light district, Hard Rock cafe, McDonalds and the cheese-, tulip-, sex-, and Nutella museums. They really love our culture. I remember once I had to point and older couple from Australia in the right direction to the Rijksmuseum. It was pas 3pm. I told them it was a bad idea since it is just too much. But they insisted. Oh well. You did well though. Love the tattoo. I'm like Nate: not on my body. But your new one is different. Real fine lines. I hope people here and irl don't confuse you with tourists. When you move to the countryside the local people will let you feel you are not truly one of them. This does not change even if you stayed there for decades. In Amsterdam you can come from wherever in the world and the day you move in to live you are accepted to be an “Amsterdammer”. The discrepancy between Amsterdam and the surrounding countryside is very old. In the Golden Age of Rembrandt etc. Amsterdam was more or less a city state. Very rich and powerful compared to the surrounding land. Basically The Netherlands were a kind of buffer around Amsterdam; Amsterdam paid the soldiers and weapons to control this area.

When people say that they hate Amsterdam, what they usually mean is the old town area. Which is of course overrun by tourists and American expats and who likes those, right? :D Funny story about the Rijksmuseum: There is a piece of the British flag ship on display that admiral Michiel de Ruijter raided all the way up the Thames river during some of the many wars the Dutch and British fought. One time when the British Queen visited, they temporarily removed it just for her to be polite about it. Now thats diplomacy!

I understand and kind of share the sentiment that the whole 'Amsterdam = The Netherlands' attitude some people have is just false but at the same time there isn't much else to do in The Netherlands 😂 I mean I love my country and especially De Betuwe region for its serenity, subtle beauty, austere people etc. but I don't think tourists would spend thousands of dollars on plane tickets and hotel rooms to go to Buren or Geldermalsen or Tiel or whatever. We're just not a country whose economy is aimed at tourism besides Amsterdam. I've been to the US and of course I focused my trip around the big cities like Vegas, LA, SF, but I've had the best experiences on those little rural towns with the locals who don't try to sell you something. I think that's just universal. I hope the Amsterdamians are treating you guys well. You seem like good and well spirited people with a great sense of humour.

Amsterdam is incredible, for a guy who travelled a lot, it's a culture melting pot & always a good vibe, for me one of the best major cities in Europe. 16:29 holy sweet baby momma jesus, yeah i want all the ice cream please lady °0° that woman is stunning.

OK let me formulate why I think Amsterdam is hated by some (Dutch) people: 1) Some people from Amsterdam act like they are a better type of Dutchie. This happens in other capitals too. I was born in Amsterdam and moved at some stage of my life to Antwerp. It is considered the capital of Flanders and Antwerp people mockingly say: Antwerp is THE city and the rest (of Flanders) is parking. And (Belgian) Limburg is the handicap- parking 🙂 2) In a lot of instances foreign people know Amsterdam but know nothing about the rest of the country. And Amsterdam has especially the reputation of drugs, booze and prositutes and The Netherlands do not want to be blamed for this reputation. 3) Foreign people want to move to Amsterdam but because so many people want to move there the prices of houses are doubled or tripled. And food and drinks had the same increase of prices. 4) Some people do visit Amsterdam because they think it's the perfect place to party in a way that is not allowed in their home town. So a lot of dirt, loud behaviour, rude and disrespectful people and reduction of safety is experienced. Big crowds of people attract also the "wrong type" of shady people that want to benefit from the ignorant crowds.. hence more aggression, scamming and unwelcome disturbance. Pushing out the "real" Amsterdam typical culture. A good exemple are the Henri Willink cheese shops and the ridiculous stroopwafel shops and "Vlaamse frieten" shops that sell frieten that are in no shape or form like Belgian frieten.. ;-)

@@nateandkatrinadotheworld - not in my abbreviated OED. "Loathe" is about "disgust" while "hate" is about "violent dislike". Maybe in Webster or the full OED there's a relation in the 5th meaning, or in Google translate, but we have moved away from fine semantics at that point. Yes, I'm with you as to your video. Well done. One thing you can still say about Amsterdam, and larger cities in general, is that they tend to be like a collection of different villages. What's nice in Amsterdam is the different architectures that dominate each of these. And the stories behind these. E.g. the National Gallery (Rijksmuseum) is in a 19th century style that was often seen in Southern NL after the emancipation of the Roman Catholics in their churches and monasteries. This was a reason for the king to not want to ceremoniously open the museum. If you have walked through the museum before its recent renovation, then you have been surprised by the architectural decor/decoration it showed after. Well, that had gotten hidden by the haters. At some point in its history, Amsterdam only was what is inside the "Singel" canal (the Dutch word "singel" means "girth" or "belt") and the land outside that was not suited to build on. If you want to make a video on how that was done with some backstories, let me know - geographically, this plays between the North Sea coast and Amsterdam.

For me, I like Amsterdam but I like Amersfoort, Groningen, Zwolle, Utrecht and Arnhem better. So when I can live in any of the others where you generally get more out of your money, you have a bit more safety, its a bit less crowded and a bit friendlier? Nothing I just hate about Amsterdam, but why would I live in a 7/10 city when less than an hour over I can have a 9/10 experience on the daily? I learned in hotel school, a hotel for everyone is a hotel FOR nobody. Amsterdam is that. Everyone from everywhere visits and yay, melting pot. But I can't identify with like 190 of the ingredients in this melting pot. So its interesting to experience some but it wouldn't fill my heart as much as being somewhere where I feel more understood and welcome. I suspect that's also where some of the annoyance comes from, Amsterdam is used to represent us when you can find nicer people outside of it, better cycling infrastructure elsewhere etc. Amsterdam is good at many things but not great at anything. So when Amsterdam is used like Groningen doesn't even exist to talk about cycling, yeah, understandable that bothers some people.

I think one of the reasons why people dislike Amsterdam is because it's crowded, expensive and the cost of living is becoming so high by the influx of expats that it's almost impossible for the average Dutchie to live there. Also the main language in Amsterdam is English and not Dutch . For most not a problem as a second option to speak but as an only option it's questionable.

@gerrylanter8109 yes that's true but prices are still driven up by the influx of expats.

The main language is Dutch. That's it. There's absolutely a lot of English in the touristic parts of the center. But if you think that's all there is to Amsterdam, that's on you. The city is much bigger than that. There's some irony to Dutch people talking about Amsterdam as if they know the city, while not knowing the city. Just like tourists think Amsterdam represents the Netherlands, the Dutch thing the city center represents the entire city of Amsterdam.

I live in the northern part of noord Holland. if i was asked to make a top 5 of cities in north Holland, Amsterdam would not be in it. I love Hoorn, Alkmaar, Haarlem, Enkhuizen and Medemblik.

Why most Dutch dislike Amsterdam? Tourist trap, overpriced, it stinks of drugs and alcohol, too many videos about Amsterdam, too much crime, too busy, etc...i can go on and on but i think u get the message.
