Why do they hide this from us? Everyone should know this. 

The angles aren't even on your bit or both sides would be cutting. Also, if you split the point it will cut faster with less pressure! I'm 79 years old and have been hand sharpening bits since I was about 12!

No one is "hiding" anything. Drill point geometry is common knowledge. It has been for several thousand years.
