The war between Israel and Hamas has been raging for five months and according to the Israel Defense Forces, the fighting in Gaza will likely last throughout 2024. The army is also preparing for a further escalation of the fighting on the Lebanese border, where Hezbollah and allied Palestinian terrorist groups have been carrying out daily rocket, missile and drone attacks, so that the Israeli army is stretched to the limit of its forces. As a result, it plans to increase the reservists' length of service. Currently, men serve for 32 months, while women serve for 24 months. With the proposed changes, it will increase the period of mandatory service for male and female soldiers in combat to 36 months. In addition, the defense forces also plan to increase the retirement age for soldiers from 40 to 45 and for officers from 45 to 50. This proposal, which increases the burden on those already serving in the military, generated a strong reaction among Israeli politicians because, according to them, the increased burden of military service should fall on the community of ultra-Orthodox Jews, because despite representing 13% of the entire population of Israel, this community is exempt from military service. Something that has obviously generated friction for many years with the rest of Israelis, but now, in the midst of the conflict, has become more controversial. So the questions are: why don't ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel have to join the army like the rest of Israelis? Why don't most ultra-Orthodox Jews work? And why, if they do work, do they get lower wages?
